Is Homeplug Networking Safe For A Knob-and-tube Electrical System
Sep 14, 2012I have a beautiful old home but, the walls are thick and WiFi signal dies easily. Is a Homeplug system safe for my old home? I am hoping to convert our current upstairs router into an access point/repeater for the downstairs router via DD-WRT. The issue is that the upstairs WiFi is on the 3rd floor and the downstairs in on the 1st and I will not be stringing an Ethernet cable through the walls.

Jan 17, 2011Wireless networking and access point. I setup a wireless network at a hotel with a net gear router n, three access points, and three repeaters. For some reason; one the access point keep losing the default gateway address. Or it could be all three access point could be losing the default address. I turn off the router and pull the power from all the access point. Then turn the router on and plug the power back into the access point. The default address is back and network working great. I try to find out why the default address keeps missing from the access point. The router is new.

Jan 7, 2013In my log I have the message: "Access denied to wireless system with MAC address 0020008E971E". When I checked the vendor for this MAC, it shows Lexmark international inc, which fact make me feel something is wrong. My first thought was that somebody trying to break into my net but I am close to accept that the owner of Lexmark WiFi printer without an idea in networking, just tried to connect it to his network and after failing to do that, it's wired and wireless features are still on. But still could this be bug or something? I am posting some logs when I first discovered the problem and after I granted access to the device with the MAC address 0020008E971E. I forgot to tell you, that before I decided to post here I did firmware upgrade from Hardware version A3 1.10 to 1.35NA (I bought it from US) with factory default restore. The result was absolutely the same - the messages kept coming "Access denied to wireless system with MAC address 0020008E971E". So I granted access to that MAC and checked the logs again. Oct 23, 2011I recently installed a very basic version of XP on my old laptop (Gateway MT3707).After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I found them, and installed them. After installing the correct drivers for wireless internet I was able to pull up the list and find my network on it.When double clicking on our wireless network it asks for a network key (also called WEP key or WPA key).Now we have a password for our network, but after an exhausting amount of tries that won't work. I not sure if that is what its looking for. In our apartment we run mac OSX, windows vista, etc., but usually the password for the network is satisfactory. I have never ran into this problem.I hate to be a noob, but I don't know where to go from here.

Aug 19, 2011I am trying to connect to my office PCs via VPN and/or RDP. The office uses Qwest DSL and has a dynamic IP address. I use DynDNS.org to keep the DNS updated with the WAN address of the router. However, any attempt to access the network fails. I have tried remote management access (I enabled it on the router) but that fails. I forwarded RDP ports on the router to one of the PCs but can't connect to it. I also set up a VPN server but cannot connect to it either. Something tells me that all requests to myoffice.homeip.net are not getting to my modem/router. I have even tried the IP associated with the name (Yes, I did check that it is correct!) but nothing works there either.

Apr 4, 2011I have a situation here where the company is rapidly expanding through acquisition. They are essentially a holding company and own several smaller entities. However most IT is consolidated as new entities are brought in and run out of Headquarters because the Board of Directors/Executive Mgt do not see IT as important and so the budget is extremely limited.
They have approximately 200 remote users at any given time, but they all work for these smaller entities. Currently each location has its own Dedicated Internet Access and VPN appliance (Netgear ProSafe, Cisco ASA 5510, I know of one entity that is just port forwarding to each workstation for RDP ).
They would like to route all traffic back through Corporate so they can consolidate this VPN mess and quit paying for all different kinds of licensing, and also stop paying for dedicated internet access for each location and just use the MPLS and have all traffic inbound/outbound run out of the corporate office.
The only issue is they dont want users to be able to access network resources at other organizations.
Like I said earlier the Board of Directors/Executive Mgt do not see IT as important and so the budget is extremely limited; so if there is an OpenSource option available that would be best. Also the IT dept there is 3 people (IT Manager (IBM AS400 guy), two Helpdesk guys (no certs, HS GED)) So the knowledge resources are limited as well.

Networking :: Fixing Networking With DIR-655
Mar 2, 2011Having some serious problems on the networking front here at home. I have 3 PC's and 2 Xbox's that run constantly. Our Internet bandwidth is Insight's 50.0 which is 50Mb download speed 5Mb upload speed. The problem we're having is this. Ever since we upgraded from dual 20Mb lines on a Cisco RV042 to a 50Mb on a DIR-655 we've been having latency issues. I have everything turned off in the router. It's basically there to give out IP numbers and thats it. All security is handled from the PC's themselves. Bandwidth tests are fine, I sustain download speeds above 7MB/s using download managers. But pings are terrible. Xbox live is terrible, PC online gaming is terrible. Pingtest.com is terrible. Only when behind routers. I've tried it behind 3 seperate routers. The DIR-655, the Belkin f5d8236 that insight provided me, and the cisco rv042 originally used for dual wan routing. all of which are met with serious failure.
If I plug directly in to the modem pings are fine. Add a router and pings go to shit.

Feb 14, 2013My old Actiontec M1000 modem recently died and my HP nc6120 with windows XP can not connect to the wireless network through the new Actiontec C1000A model.It connected wirelessly through the old M1000 moden. Window icons on the screen indicate no wireless network is detected. When I view the available networks and log in to the assigned network with its password, it looks like it is trying to connect but does not. It will connect through the ethernet link-up. I don't have any other wireless devices to connect to the network. I have updated the drivers for the wireless card through HP. I have taken the HP nc6120 to the Geek Squad and the wireless card connects with their network. I seem to have a compatibility problem with the old HP with its XP windows operating software and the new modem system. I have tried to reset the ip addresses, but this has had no effect. However, I do have purchased AVG protection software operating on the system, which I am not sure how to shut off. Is this a problem with a too advanced modem for an old style HP with an XP operating system? Is there a modem that I can downgrade to if it is? [code]
