Max Speed Limited By Router Or Switch?
Jun 7, 2012
I have a 100 Mbps router (which I can't change). But all my computers, media players/streamers, NAS have gigabit Ethernet. Currently, under exclusive use I do approach the 100 Mbps limit (seen a lot of times my laptop transferring files from/to NAS around 14 MBps). But since my devices are capable of handling higher speeds I am thinking to upgrade to a Gigabit switch. That brings me to my question.
If I have 100 MBps router and a Gigabit switch (1k Mac table), what will be max speed between devices connected through the switch?
I am aware anything that goes via the router will hit the roof at 100 Mbps. But will the devices under the switch operate at Gigabit (due to the direct transfer based on mac address)? Or will everything still go through the router who is giving out the IP addresses (the switch having no DHCP) and limit the speed?

I am using Intel® 82579V, 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller(s) and CAT 6 cable , however my network utilization is limited to 15%- 35%.I know that practical speeds are lower but is there nay way i can increase this throughput , any maximum throughput experience? On a 1Gbps getting 25% Max utilzization is extremely slow.Am i missing soemthing tat needs tobe corrected .I am working on LAn and ocnnected to a server using HP Procure 2810 series switch.

I have a Belkin N300 router. When a computer is hard-wired to the router, I get about 26Mbps, but all of the wireless devices in my house are limited to about 56kbps. I tried logging into the router to see if there was something "choking" the connection speed, but nothing really jumped out at me. Is there a setting of some kind that could be causing this?
I do have a signal repeater since my house is so big, but there is nothing within those controls that would seem to have that kind of effect either.

I posted this in the wired forum, because it's the wired speed that is limited, but it looks like there's more E4200 expertise over here, so here it is again:
I have Hotwire fiber service and the plan is supposed to provide 20 megabit downlink speeds.
I just bought a Linksys/Cisco E4200 to replace an old Dell TrueMobile 2300 from 2004. With that router I got the full advertised downlink speed.
Now, when I run a speed test with the E4200 in place, the downlink speed is only 5168 kbps or so. Watching the speed test meters, I see the data arriving in bursts, every few seconds a whole lot of it gets through, then for a second or two nothing. It's pretty regular.
But, if I run a speed test with the ONT cable plugged right into a laptop, I see 19001 kbps - close enough to 20. This is the same cable that plugs into the back of the router.
With E4200 in place Direct into laptop what I can check or configure in the E4200 to change this behavior?

I have QWEST DSL, and I am supposed to get 1mb + download speeds from them. When I talk to them on the phone they test my line at over 1mb and say any problems had to be on my end.
I have replaced my router and my network card. When I test my connection speed at this website CNET Bandwidth Meter: Online Speed Test - CNET Reviews
I get 1.2 mb/sec but I have never gotten better than 160 kb/sec download speed from any website I've downloaded from. Is this a software issue? Is my computer somehow throttling what it receives?
I did a Line Quality Test here DSL Reports and it is here: Line quality test packet loss and latency | DSLReports.com, ISP Information
I did three tests, and the bottom part failed 4 times out of 6, so the failures are repeatable. The data all looks comparable for each test on a cursory examination, not knowing what I am looking for.
I have no idea what this test means/indicates.
So my questions are:
1) What further information do I need to supply? (Assume I don't know how to do what you are asking me to do if it is in the least bit technical.)
2) Is my problem with my phone lines? I live in an older area and the lines have not been updated in decades so it may be that QWEST is claiming they can deliver more then they actually can.
At this point I suspect I will need to get cable in order to get decent download speed, QWEST doesn't offer service at the speed I get, so I can't opt for a lower price/slower speed option from them even though they are not delivering what I am promised.

NOTE: *this is not a duplicate thread that was closed by valis, its just a lil misunderstanding, i was just showing my download speeds on the applications i used that shows 50kb/s and not torrenting issues*My download speed are always limited to nearly 50kb/s, it cant possibly reach as high as 100kb/s not like last month that shows my download speed at the maximum of nearly 1mb/s On any direct downloadseven using download managers that speeds your downloading tasks to 10x its speed, its always 50 to 60kb/s not even reaching 100kb/s it sucks!! it doesn't even multiply my download speed into 2x[CODE]

I've got a 75/75Mbit Fibre (FTTH) connection, but my speed seems limited with my new motherboard.
I always had the following speed on my old DDR2 motherboard (Asus M3A32 MVP):
I've recently bought an Asus M4A89TD PRO/USB3 and for some reason my connection is limited to about 40Mbit down and 10Mbit up.
The motherboard has an Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and all drivers are up to date and i'm running the latest BIOS version.
I've already tried plugging in another desktop PC and a MacBook on the same LAN cable, and they both get the full 75Mbit up/down.

My N750 F1103 (f/w 1.10.16) LAN speed is limited to 5Mb why? I upgraded my Internet bandwidth to 20Mb+ tested and found it was only 5Mb, the cable company checked a few things and then I did some diagnostics and Isolated to the N750. I have two wired PC and same results with both PC's. This is supposed to have Giga bit LAN not Giggle bit LAN! I'm paying for something I cannot used to its full potential.

i discovered a speed issue with cable with my router TL-WR1043ND. i have no more than 11 MB/s from computer to NAS... so like all transfer speed was setup like a 100Mbps adapter. my card on my computer is in auto negotiation. If i set it manually to 1Gbps no link is active between router and computer. i tried it with my laptop and once again the same issue.

Both of these model units apear to have a max Internet downlink speed of about 26 or 27Mbs. I have tested this with 10 different units at 3 different sites where the provided broadband downlink speed is a full 50Mbs, including in my own office. My normal router is a Cisco ASA5505 and I have also connected a Cisco 1840 router and even an old Linksys router and all achieve the full 50MBs speed using a variety of speed test sites. The cable modem at my office and at the other sites have a gigabit LAN connection and the RVS4000/WRVS4400N units certainly should be able to achieve the 50Mbs speed. If this issue can not be resolved, my clients will no doubt want me to install a different manufacturer's unit, which I will do.

I am currently connected to my router via a 100 megabit cable (the router port itself is either 100M or 1G, I can't remember). There are no free ports on the router, but I want to connect additional computers to the network. If I get a gigabit switch and connect two of my PCs to it using gigabit cable, can they communicate at gigabit speeds, or will they be limited by the 100M connection back to the router? (In other words, does traffic between two computers on the switch have to be sent through the router, or not?)

I am assuming, that the slowest component on a network determines the connect speed? I am having a small network with 4 pcs and 2 of them show 1GB connect speed while the other 2 show 100MB. What would cause 2 units to run at the 100MB speed on a Gigabyte-Switch and Router?

I just "upgraded" from an E1000 to an E1200 wireless router. I had good performance with the E1000, and I only upgraded to the E1200 because it was on sale.My only complaint with the E1200 is the slower download speed on my desktop PC that is connected directly to the router. My normal download speed on the desktop PC was 25 Mbps with the E1000 model. After I disabled the WMM on the E1200 as others suggested, the download speed on the desktop machine immediately increased from 5 Mbps up to 15 Mbps. Any other suggestions to get the download speed up to 25 Mbps before I switch back to my E1000? The E1200 router is connected to my Arris TM602G modem. Both modem and router were reset during the installation process. I setup parental controls for a couple of iPods and configured Open DNS, but other than that, the router is using default settings. All wireless devices in the house seem to be performing fine with the E1200.

I just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.

I am sutdying at uni and in a few months, I will be moving into a house, with my current flatmates. We will be buying a fibre optic line.Ideally, what I want to do, is split the connections evenly, depending on how many people are online current, rather than having mass downloads of everyone at the same time, when other will only get a small speed while browsing or gaming,or streaming, etc. So, basically, what I want to do is split the connection at anyone time evenly,so if there are 5 people connected and our connection speed is 50MB then each will get 10MB. And if 2 people are connected, then the speed will be 25MB each, and so on.
I am wondering what is the cheapest way of doing this? I am very computer illerate,I know how to use unix systems.I even own my own server, but I'm not so clued up in this area of networking.I believe it's something to do with a switch, and which switches support this? (I've heard it's something to do with full-duplex / half duplex).
- I will probably set up a domain system, where everyone has to login to the main server to access the internet. (I know vaguely how to do that) - is there some software that I can put on the server which will distribute connection speeds automatically.

We have an old 3508XL switch. We are trying to connect a new 2960 to it but we purchased the incorrect SFP insert and that speed can only do 100mb. We are getting link flaps and we suspect that it's a speed issue between the two. However, I cannot find how to set the speed on the old OS of the 3508 switch.

Switch utilization is not more than 10% and both the laptops are connected in 1 Gbps full duplex.
I have checked by removing the gateway in both laptop but the output is same.

I purchased this router a few months ago from Dell. It is currently limiting our Internet connection to no more than 2 Mbps down. I originally thought it was our Internet service and them troubleshoot the line but they found nothing wrong. If I bypass the router and connect directly to the modem, we get our normal speed of 10+ Mbps. I've updated the router firmware, tried tweaking according to other tips I've found, but cannot get past the slow speeds.

Is there a way to share this connection using one of the modes to multiple devices (the devices will run in a different subnet than the hotel network). I understand I can do this in WISP mode but only for sharing hotel wireless connection. The hotel wifi has poor reception, hence I want to use wired. Is there a way to do this? I would imagine this would be not an unusual scenario in many top hotels. Mid hotels generally do not have such limitations.
