How to feel about having network devices resolve names? Do you typically do it? No? Why or why not?I feel like I haven't seen it set up a lot, but it could certainly be good for specifying logging hosts and things like that.
View 7 RepliesInstalled new Router. Web site resolve takes ~ 10 seconds. We are running domain. The local DNS is on 192.168.6.2. When the dns is resolved browsing the website is fast. But after few min it gets slow again.

With my current setup on the 5508 controller, I don't have the ability to see any name resolution for wireless clients. I'm wondering if there is some way that I can enable this.
The reason I think this should be pretty easy is because if I enable the access point feature of a smart phone (Android or iPhone), when a client connects, it shows the client name on the smartphone. What's different about how a smartphone sees the wireless client and how WLC/WCS sees it?
I'm having with my VPN Server on my Cisco 2621xm.
I started by creating a VPN - everything worked great. I assigned the DNS Servers, Domain name, WINS Server so when I connect I'm able to resolve local hostnames on the network with no problem, however I couldn't connect to the internet. I then set up a split tunnel access list. Since I've set that up, I'm now able to ping internet based addresses (www.google.ca), but no longer able to resolve internal host names. I can ping the ip addresses, just name resolution no longer works.
Searched through conference and still have no resolution.Switch: Cisco SGE 2000..Layer3 mode enabled through console. [code]
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy RV220w has a problem with DNS. I have configured the device for my network, but it seems as though DNS is not working correctly. For a background, I have a primarily Windows environment in my network, W7 PCs. I use homegroup to share files/printers amongst them. I like that I can type "\<server-name> in the Windows search box, and up comes the other computer's files. This functionality is still there with the RV220w, so that's not my issue. My problem arises when attempting to type "<server-name>" into the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box. I can no longer RDP to my other computers by name. Attempting by IP does get me there.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI just purchased an E2500. I have a small home network dominated by Mac and Linux boxes, with an occassional Windows machine. On my previous router I had been running OpenWRT.
One of the nice features of DNSMASQ is that it will do local name resolution from the /etc/hosts file on the router. Is there anyway to turn on similar features in the E2500? I have a NAS box and a networked printer that require local name resolution. I had hoped that I could just create a DHCP reservation for them, and that the router would resolve their names for other hosts on the network. This does not appear to work.
Should I just be boxing this thing up and returning it in favor of a unit I can flash better firmware on to?
Using a 4948E switch with FastEthernet1 as the management interface which uses the VRF mgmtVrf. I cannot get DNS resolution to work for some reason.
I am using code enterprise 15.1-2.SG and here are the relevant config snippets:

I read online there are some commands in a different code that support specifying the VRF along with the name servers, but I don't have those options. All I can do is set the source-interface on the domain-lookup command.
I have been trying to get my 851W to work with DDNS for a long while now. In fact I walked away from the problem in frustration and loaded DD Client on a Linux box until I had time to re-visit this. The folks at Zone Edit were not able to offer much with CLI problems.
When I debug DDHS updates I get to a point where the the router tries to resolve the DDNS update address and fails.So I have a number of questions:
a) Is this error the result of lack of DNS server names written to the config?
b) My WAN interface is a DHCP client to my modem. If the DDNS updater does need to resolve a name, shouldn't the DNS server info be provided by the DHCP process for the WAN interface? How do I ensure that name servers are automatically assigned for the DDNS updater to use?

I like the ASA 5505 for SMB and Home Offices very much, but I'm missing sadly a DNS Server or at least the ability of the DHCP Server to use static addresses for certain MAC's. In SOHO's the ASA is the only thing always powerded on and often even a Server where a DNS Server could be installed is missing.So is there a chance to see such a feature (DNS Server and/or static DHCP) in the next SW Release? how name resolution in a small LAN can be done without a local DNS Server?

I can connect, and ping internal ip addresses, however I cannot ping back out to the internet, nor can the internal network ping the vpn clients and dns resolution internal or external does not work. I am seeing nothing blocked in the logs on the asa.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Windows Server 2008 R2 connected via cable to my RV220. The server is hosting several websites running in separate virtual machines. These websites are accessible through a reverse proxy set up on the 2008 R2. In addition the 2008 R2 provides access to storage over Windows file sharing (client backup, file sharing ...). Most of the clients are connected via wireless.My problem is that after some time (~24h) I lose the connection to the services provided by the 2008 R2 server as a result of (host) name resolution has stopped working. This only happens for wireless clients. Wired clients are not affected.To give more details: Network clients connected via wireless can't see clients connected via Ethernet and the network shares are not accessible anymore (even by putting in manually "\hostnameshare", but "\[IP address]share" still works). Being connected via Ethernet the communication between client and server works flawlessly - the server appears immediately on the network device list. The other way around is also not possible: the server can’t see clients connected via wireless. The reverse proxy is still accessible through wireless connection by putting in the IP address, e.g. "http://192.168.1.123/homepage" but "http://hostname/homepage" won't work.A restart of the router will fix things but only for the next couple of hours.

Laptop with inbuilt wifi and no slots for another card except via USB - G

Everything in the house is running at ~ 26-54 Mb/s at the moment and the two N devices have a very weak signal due to their distance from the router. Unfortunately, moving the router to somewhere that will benefit one device will have a detrimental effect on the other due to their locations.The router has the option to switch on 40mhz (mbit???) which, I gather, is also known as channel bonding and this should boost the range and speed of the N service but I also gather that doing this will stop all the G devices from connecting at all.I still have the Homehub 2 router that I was using before so I was wondering if there is any way I could make use of this (or anything else) to allow me to use all devices in the house at their fastest speeds.
Can an IP conflict cause network issues for computers other than the devices that have the same IP? I have resolved an issue where someone was testing a device on our network and assigned a static IP that was already in use by one of our printers. Specifically, I am curious if the IP conflict could have caused issues with mapped network drives for other computers. I just seemed to have network gremlins for the 2 days of the IP conflict.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having a bit of a problem lately trying to play Battlefield 3 on my PS3 when other computers are running on my network.
I'm looking for a program or method to set bandwidth limits on some devices to try to guarantee the PS3 enough bandwidth to play without lagging.
With the research I have done what I can find is that there is something called Quality of Service (QoS), and traffic shaping -- which are good and fine but I don't believe my Westell router supports them and I don't want to have to do anything crazy with my router.
Also I am currently dual booting Ubuntu Linux alongside Windows XP, and I don't have XP set up because I want to install Windows 7 on that partition once I can read DVDs (in the hardware forum), therefor I would really like to find a Linux program that I can use to shape my network traffic.
I have a mix of devices that all access the internet via a Deutches Telkom Speedport W 723v my windows devices, HTC phone and even the iPad 2 never have a problem, but my Macbook Pro (Unibody Late 2008 model) and my iMac (Probably 2007 / 2008) keep having a problem with the network dropping out. To fix it I have to switch off Airport and switch it back on again and it re-connects straight away.The Mac OSX software albeit now rather dated on both devices (The Macbook is 10.5.8) is kept up to date using Software Update.The problem amy also now be affecting my APPLE TV2 it never had a problem before but now I cannot connect to iTunes on my Macbook using Home Sharing it just does not want to connect!!!I did try before going into the Speedport and changing channels from AUTO to channel 1 but that did not resolve it. I am going to do it again and try a different channel but logging onto the Speedport is an absolute pain, I can only login using my Macbook Pro when it is booted into Windows XP and on Ethernet as we had all sorts of problems setting it up and could only do it using IE not SAFARI and now the Speedport login only recognises 1 x PC for logging in, if you try a different device it throws a wobbly and locks up!

The Mac results bring up BlackBerrys among other things. I upgraded my security from WEP to WPA2, but nothing changed. I use NOD32 and recently installed AdAware, which picked up a few things, but again, results are the same.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an ADSL connection through Canal Digitaal, which I believe uses the KPN network. My Zyxel 2601 modem/router is usually accessed at 192.168.1.254. The following devices are connected to it: two iphones, a Macbook Air, an Apple TV 3 and a Mac Pro.all devices except the Mac Pro. Looking closer I found in their respective settings that they connect to 192.168. 2.254. All have somehow been assigned IP addresses on the 192.168.2.xxx network. The Mac Pro remains on the 192.168.1.xxx network.Going to 192.168.2.254 launches a login page for a KPN router called Arcadyan ARV7519 which is on ANOTHER SSID than my wifi network. Nevertheless, all my devices say they are connected to my network SSID but with IP addresses in the 192.168.2.xxx range.Does it have to to with the channels used by the respective routers or is there some phishing or such going on? What can I do to ensure that my devices stay on my Zyxel network?Weirdly, the SSID of the Arcadyan router doesn't normally show up in my list of nearby networks. It only shows sometimes.Also - in case it is relevant - when I try to access 192.168.1.254 from my Mac Pro I am able to log in, meaning I reach the welcome page of my Zyxel router though it takes a very long time for it to load.

The WDTV can act as a media player for both the Windows 7 PC and Samsung Galaxy S3.The TV can act as a media player for the Windows 8 PC.If I connect the Windows 7 PC via Ethernet, then the TV sees it and can act as a media player for it and the WDTV no longer can.The TV can't act as a media player for the Samsung Galaxy S3 nor can they see each other to use the Galaxy S3 as a wireless remote (Viera remote android app) .Why can my wireless devices talk to each other and my wired devices talk to each other, but the wireless devices can't talk to the wired devices?
I've got several devices (two laptops, Xbox, WiiU, Apple TV, 2 ipads, and an iphone) that can connect to my home wifi network just fine. However, when connected it seems these devices cannot communicate with one another.
Homesharing between my iphone/laptop and Apple TV is no longer functioning. Also, I can not sync my windows media player with my Xbox, and I can not connect my iphone to the Xbox using AirMusic.

I'm running Windows XP, SP3. This is a friends computer that I'm trying to fix. It had a virus which I removed, however it left behind a damaged computer. Now there are no network devices that show up in "Network Connections" or in Device Manager. I tried to reinstall the drivers, but I got this error: "The Realtek Ethernet Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug [sic] the Cable".

The ps3 is wired into the router, the laptop and s3 are wireless. I have connected my hard drive to one of the USB drives on the router. I can see the HD and view any of its content (movies and music) on the laptop, but nothing else. My ps3 and s3 are connected to the internet, however I can't find the drive.
we currently have one desktop PC, two laptops, two HDTVs, and three cell phones. All of them are Wi-Fi compatible. Currently, I have a NetGear WGR614 v8 router courtesy of Comcast.it is possible that I can have all devices sharing the same Wi-Fi network? The desktop PC is connected to the router with CAT-5. The TV in the living room can be connected to the router as well with CAT-5 as the router is less than a foot from the network jack on the back of the TV.The TV in the bedroom has a Wi-Fi ready via USB.My daughter who is off to college owns one of the cell phones a laptop and an XBOX360 which I am not concerned about connecting until she returns home around Christmas.

I also have a second VPN router attached to the 4200.I can see the wireless connected devices with the associated IP addresses. If I plug a laptop directly into the Cisco, I can of course see it.However, I can see none of the devices attatched to the powerline devices? I have a securty cam connected via the powerline and want to know the IP address. I checked with cisco technical support via chat and they said it is impossible. I have used 2 previous routers with the same configuration and can see all devices.
View 1 Replies View RelatedCurrently my home network is being switched via TrendNet TEGs80G unmanaged gig switches. I have been using them for about a year now with no issues. As my home network becomes more advanced, I recently just added a Cisco ASA5505, I am thinking about swapping those unmanaged devices, 4 of them, to managed. I was looking at the Cisco SG300-10 for upstairs, and a 16 port variant for my main core. These devices do not support full Cisco IOS cli, but they are manageable with a rich feature set nonetheless. My question is, should I swap the unmanaged devices with the more expensive Cisco devices, or just keep what works and save the money until I really need to spend it. As previously stated, my home LAN works just fine as it is, however my WiFi, NTV550s, server and workstations are all on the same network. Probably not the most secure but it is what it is without VLAN support.

I have two computers, one vista (Laptop) the other XP (Desktop). Now the problem is that i can't see my vista laptop on my XP, but both are connected to the same router (Netgear DG2200). The router also has a hard drive connected as a network drive WHICH i can see on the XP.
Problem is, nothing comes up on the Vista laptop except for the router and itself. Not even the network hard drive. I can view it on my PS3, though.
I noticed my lan is not enabled on my laptop, so how do i enable it? I tried diagnosing but it said to connect the lan cable.
