Network Speed Reduction Due To Too Many Switches

Feb 24, 2012

I recently finished setting up my home network, here's the setup, modem > Wireless Router (DIR-655) > 1st Switch (ZyXEL GS105B) > hard wires throughout the house (which got messed up by the previous owner of the house) and from those hard wires, in one room I have an E3000 set as Repeater (DD-WRT) which has 1 desktop connected to it through hardwire then in living room I have another switch (ASUS GX-D1081/V2) for HTPC, TV, PS3

Home Network :: Optimization For Packet Loss / Desync Reduction

Jun 27, 2011

I have recently been testing out the Kaillera netplay application thats embedded into a few old console emulators. Now the major problem is the de-sync between clients and I was wondering which is the best to reduce this.Say I have an upload speed of 1.2 Mbps and a download speed of 11.28 Mbps. Obviously, I am capped by my upload speed when it comes to changing how many packets i can send/receive per second because its all one setting and I am usually playing P2P.So, I am not entirely sure how big the packets are that are being sent, I am guesstimating based on what they said on Kaillera website that it is around 200-300 bits.Anyway, with my current upload speed I can transfer at a rate of like 600-800 packets per second depending on packet length.De-sync's happen quite often especially in the higher rom size games like Mario Party because of all the data being transferred. Would it be wiser to increase my setting of pps from 20 packets/sec to 60 packets/sec?

Connecting Switches Together For Best LAN Speed

Feb 27, 2012

I've been trying to find the answer for this for ages. I'm now hoping a network pro can provide it here.I have two Gigabit switches connected by a single Cat 5e cable of length 10 metres. My servers are on one switch, and clients on the other. We don't seem to get good speed on the network, so I am investigating various issues in turn as I come across them. The Question is: Would I achieve faster packet throughput between switches by filling the empty RJ-45 sockets with additional Cat 5e cables, or will it have no more effect than the single cable there at the moment?

Cisco Switches :: SG-200-08 - Poor UDP Speed

May 3, 2013

I'm experiencing poor udp speed on my sg-200-08. I'm running a nfs share on Ubuntu server 12.04  to a Ubuntu 11.10 client connected through udp protocol . If I use an un managed site com (plastic ****) I get about 50MB/s transfers, with sg-200-08 I can't get over 12/13 MBs transfers.

I've tried to set on both server and client MTU = 1492 and I've changed firmware from 1.0.3.3 to 1.0.5.1 (I've not tested 1.0.6 because of some posts here regarding udp problems).

Routers / Switches :: Transfer Speed Different Between Two Computer?

Jan 12, 2011

I bought a new laptop today, unfortunately, it doesnt have a Firewire port and i want to use it for video editing. But i figured no problem really, i'll just capture on my desktop that i have been previously using to edit on, using Premiere pro to edit, but HDVsplit to capture, and then transfer the files over to the laptop using a USB or possibly trying to setup a home network. But when transferring files from the desktop onto the laptop via the router using ethernet cables, the speed is about 250 kb/s and when its the other way around, from the laptop to the desktop, the speed is 10 MB/s! I really need to find away to speed this up as the overall files i want to transfer are over 5GB.You can read a bit more about it here: [URL]

Cisco Switches :: SG500X XG Ports Show Unknown Speed

We currently have the XG1 through XG4 ports on our SG500X switch setup in a LAG with the Cisco 10G-FiberOptics.  Everything is working fine, however in the web UI under Port Management->Port Settings the "Port Speed" is listed as Unknown.  All other ports report the speed correctly. We have 2 SG500X switches configured this way and both are reporting the same Uknown speed.

Cisco Switches :: SG300-28P (SRW2024-K9) In L3 Mode - Intermittent Loss Of Speed

Jan 24, 2011

Every "once in a while" (about a week with my network load), the SG300 crawls to an almost standstill of all IPv4 activity (haven't got IPv6 enabled here yet, so I can't comment wether this applies to IPv6 as well). It seems pure L2 transmissions is not affected, but L3 definitely is (down to 20mbit as opposed to the 600+ rate I usually get).

Soft-rebooting the switch (via the webgui) useful, and the intervals of the crashes seem related to total bytes transmitted, not time. I have jumbo frames enabled, and disabled flow control on on the switch and all hosts.

Cisco Infrastructure :: ASA 5510 - Plug In And Internal Switches Have Slow Speed?

Jul 19, 2012

I have a 100mbps internet connection from my ISP but once the connection hits the ASA the download speed gets reduced to 15mbps. My network is setup as follows: ISP Modem ---- Edge Switch ----- ASA --- Internal Cisco Switches

If I plug my computer into an extra port on the Edge Switch I get speeds around 92mbps with normal traffic still going to the ASA. But when I plug into the ASA and internal switches I have speeds of 15mbps.

I have made sure that duplex/speed match on the links. I have done packet captures and within  two minutes I do have several dup acks and retransmissions. The retransmissions don't seem to match the dup acks. (The retransmission is not for the dup ack requested so the dup ack keeps being resent)

The only interface error is on the inside interface which includes 700 overruns in a weeks worth of time.I am not using an IPS/IDS. I do have several vpns on it but was not going through a vpn tunnel. I am also using NAT.I am using an ASA 5510 8.2(1)

Cisco Switches :: SFP-H10GB-CU1M SFP+ Copper Cable Module Speed Shows As Unknown

Jul 17, 2012

I have connected 2 SG500x switches using an SFP-H10GB-CU1M SFP+ Copper Cable module.  Since the port shows as a 10G port, I would expect the speed to show as 10G as well.  However, it shows as "Unknown".  This doesn't leave me with confidence that it is being recognized properly.  The link is working properly, but I haven't run tests to verify if I'm getting full 10G throughput or not.  Shouldn't it show 10G as the link speed?

How To Speed Up Network

Sep 19, 2012

I setup a network to run my business three years ago. It consists of 7 computers, an HP Media Smart server, three Netgear GS 605 v 3, where I connect the computers, router and printers. The server is only used as a file server and runs the backups. However, I also put together an Access database which has a front end on each computer and a back end on the server.Reading data from the database on some machines is terribly slow at times, 30 seconds or more for a response, but other times it is almost as quick as you can type.We are a lot busier now so do I need to upgrade hardware or do I have a problem. For example, my machine is just a Vista machine and writes to server at 60Mbps and reads at 21Mbps, two other Windows 7 machines write at 70Mbps but only read at 3Mbps. If I look at the Status of my Local Area Connection Status, its speed is 100.0 Mbps yet the Netgear states 10/100/1000. I have concluded that I need to change the network cards in the computers, but I don't know if I am correct.

Network Speed Is Slowing?

Feb 15, 2012

Is there a way to monitor network traffic speeds. Our companies network download speeds seem to start high, but then progressively slows to a near stop.Downloading small documents start out fast and finishes, but I noticed that the speed slows down significantly. This poses a problem when downloading larger files and documentsThe speed start out very high, but then slows to near zero and results in the file failing to complete. What i need is to find out what is causing the speed degradation and or where our bottleneck is. Is this a setting issue with the browser, security, etc.

Network Speed Stuck At 10mbps

Mar 20, 2011

The Setup On my home network, I am running Windows Server 2003 as domain controller and file server with a SCSi attached disk array.I have several client PC's. 2 running Windows XP service pack 3, 1 laptop running Windows 7 Service pack 1 and a desktop also running Windows 7 Service Pack 1.These are connected by 2 switches - 1 x Netgear gigabit switch, and a Linksys PSUS4 USB Print server at 100mbps.The PC I use the most is the desktop running Win7 and transfer files to the server. After transferring some large files from the clients to the server, I noticed that the speed was considerably slower than what I was expecting it to be. After investigating, and eliminating elements of the network, I discovered that the Server NIC was running at 10mbps. I tried the usual things like forcing the NIC to run at 100mbps Full Duplex but this had no effect. Strangely, if I reboot the server while the desktop is still switched on the connection goes back to 100mbps. However if I reboot the desktop, or even alter the network settings, it immediatley reverts back to 10mbps.

Can't Explain Network Speed Discrepancy Between Locations

Feb 6, 2013

why one of my two offices experiences significantly slower speeds when accessing the web. I'm a complete technology simpleton, so I haven't been able to figure out a logical reason for it. Here's the scenario:

Office 1..................................................Office 2
==========..........................................===========
Comcast Business.....................................Comcast Business
tests at 33 mbps down..............................tests at 7 mbps down
tests at 6 mbps up....................................tests at 3 mbps up
6 CPUs access Linksys SR216 10/100 switch..6 CPUs access 3Com Office Connect Ethernet Hub
switch accesses Comcast modem.................hub accesses Comcast modem

My laptop, and all other CPUs, perform significantly faster at Office 2.

Is it the difference between the switch at Office 1 v the hub at Office 2? I always thought they were sort of the same thing. I know I've taken some of the cables out of the switch in Office 1 and put them directly into the Comcast Modem and haven't seen any improvement.

Why on earth does my laptop perform so much better at Office 2. I've also moved desktops to Office 2 and they are noticeable faster at that location as well. I'm stumped. We access a major company's web site for account servicing, and it is twice as fast at Office 2...while using the exact same laptop.

One Computer's Download Speed On Network Is Slow?

Sep 1, 2012

When connected to my router on my main desktop, I get download speeds of about .3-.85 mbps, I have comcast and a linksys N router, as well as a N wireless adapter in my desktop. If I use my laptop, I get around 10 mbps download speed, (Speeds are as of [URL]) but they still remain at .3 mbps on my desktop. I have tried two different wireless adapters in my computer. One is the Linksys AE2500 Dual Band N adapter, and the other is an ASUS N13 N Adapter. I have gotten the latest drivers of both adapters, but speeds stayed very low. When I connected the computer via ethernet cable, it ran at 16mbps. So I think that something must be wrong with some wireless settings, since I've tried 2 different adapters and was getting the same result, unless both were faulty I suppose. I also don't think it's my router's issue, because the wireless is working great on other wireless devices. I am using windows 7 on the desktop.

Network Upload Speed Is Randomly Reduced?

Jan 2, 2013

First discovered this problem because I was unable to connect to a particular web site that was functional according to a friend that I was talking to on the telephone while trying to connect.

Problem: Network UPLOAD speed is randomly reduced from 2Mb to 600Kb while download speed seems unaffected (Abt. 30 to 50Mb). First eliminated the router, modem and cables as suspects working with ISP tech support. CAT 5 cabling to router and cable modem. Then I discovered that another machine on the network did not have this problem. I then discovered that disabling the network and re-enabling the network cured the problem.....temporarily. Downloaded and installed latest NIC driver from MB web site. No solution. Downloaded and installed latest NIC driver from Realtek web site. No solution. Updated MB BIOS. No solution.

MB= Asus M5A97 EVO
CPU: AMD FX-4100
OS: MS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1 (Latest updates)
RAM: 8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 802MHz (11-11-11-28
NIC on MB Realtek PCIe GBE

Disabled TCP/IPV6. No solution. I suspect it is one of the "Advanced" settings for the Realtek PCIe GBE, but I don't know what they do. Anytime I disable and re-enable the network adapter my upload speed returns to normal. I haven't been able to isolate a particular action that causes the slow-down. The attached pics show speed test, before and after disable - re-enable network adapter. Same server.

Home Network :: Getting Very Slow Speed Of Between 10-15Mbps?

Nov 17, 2011

I have a homeplug network as follows:

6x 85Mbps homeplugs in different rooms, each connected to a 5 port switch

2x rooms contain a PC

5x rooms contain a Squeezebox of various types

Router connected to homeplug

I have realised that I am only getting very slow network speeds of between 10-15Mbps (LAN SPeed Test)which affects Squeezebox's ability to play several devices synched up at a time playing 320Kbps MP3s

I have done some proprietory testing in my home by switching devices on & off & testing network speed accordingly but no significant gains seem to be made. One PC seems to report far lower speeds though at 5Mbps which is 3 times lower than the other PC. They are set up to read/write files from eachothers shared folders (but not simultaneously).1st question is, am I being realistic about the speed of data throughput I expect on a network of this type? I was expecting a much higher speed like 50Mbps.I wouldn't mind investing in the faster Homeplug system but having to buy 6x adapters isn't worth it if I will only get a marginal improvement.
