View 1 RepliesI live in apartment house that recently had a "professional" (I use that term loosely) sell and install a wireless network for Internet access. I am the only tenant with any knowledge of computers and networking, retired after 30+ years in telecommunications including 7 years in an ISP doing project management. I am also the only user who spends any appreciable amount of time online. The apt owner did not know of my background when he had this guy contracted to do the work. The "engineer" did an inadequate site survey, not thinking of or allowing for RFI, EMI, walls or other obstructions and he neglected to see what the tenants' individual needs were.
The installation was finished more than a week past his due date because "ran out of parts". When he did the individual user setups (he included that in his quote, apparently) he attempted to garner extra business by claiming that the end users' machines were all full of spyware, malware, viruses and worms. At least 3 tenants had brand new machines that had never been connected to the Internet and all three were purchased from different large vendors. I checked the others and out of 17 machines only one had any issues of that type.
There are 3 access points in the building, all with the same SSID to accommodate any tenants wishing to connect anywhere in the building or in the patio area, similar to a hospitality application. Problem:This "engineer" is now refusing to work on the network because he thinks it's a "difference of opinion" when to me, everything points to a possible defective access point or just lousy administration by this guy. The reason I've come to that conclusion is that at random, my secure connection (WPA2) drops and reconnects as unsecured.
The installer is convinced that random dropping, etc is because of my "defective machine" that never had any issues with dropping from a hardwired connection. He told the apt owner that a direct wired connection to the router would not work. Contractually, we tenants cannot contact him directly with service issues. My purpose is just to get decent access.
sometimes the ethernet led is not glowing even if the cable is plugged in. how can i resolve this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedA client of mine is using a Cisco 877w wireless router, they have one IP phone connected to one of the RJ45 ports on the back of the router and their main desktop is also plugged directly into the router - this all functions perfectly.However, the router is in a private house and as such it provides connectivity for all other wireless devices such as iPhones, Ipads and Xbox Live etc. The problem is that the router only allows 5 devices to be connected at any one time and when a sixth attempts to connect to the router the first device (the IP phone) is diconnected automatically.
So my client can be using the IP phone for an important call and his son walks in with Iphone and Xbox, friends etc etc and the IP phone is immediatley disonnected from the router. I beleive that the router should allow more than 5 devices to connect and would hope there is a way of stopping the IP phone constantly being disconnected.I have already paid for "Cisco Engineers" to attend this site but they cannot get it working.
i have dell inspiron n5520.My laptops wifi sometimes get disconnected in the middle and and reconnects automatically again..when I use lan internet works fine without getting disconnected..
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a home network using WEP 128-bit router and my phone is Motorola Atrix with AT&T. until I did the jellybean update to android my phone connected automatically with my home wifi but now it won't connect at all. In all other placed with wifi or hotspots it connects automatically and even with secure networks it saves the password and stays connected. I tried my local AT&T store and they said all my settings in the phone were right and suggested I reboot my router which I did. Nothing has corrected the problem. The wifi doesn't stay on long enough for me to put in my password to connect.

I have a WTR160N-RM. I just moved and the cable technician hooked it up unsecured. I didn't catch it until he left. I can access the Linksys webite with the standard IP address and generic password, but I'm not sure what needs to be changed. I've looked at several UTube videos and read some online instructions, but they all different a bit. How I can secure my wireless again? I have an old Toshiba LT that just keeps on tickin'.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure why the guest net work is unsecured. I would have thought that would not be an option but it is unsecured. How to secure the guest network [2.4 GHz]? Also when I view the guest list some devices stay displayed whether they are in the vicinity or even turned off. That adds to my paranoia with the guest network being unsecured. I also can't edit the screen names to know who the device belongs to like is available in "my devices", forcing me to keep a MAC address list.

Using the manual settings under Status/Router and clicking the Disconnect button (by Login Status), the page reloads, and say I am disconnected.
Without any input from me, about 30 seconds later the page reloads and say I am connected.
Clicking disconnect, closing the tab and testing my connection proves that I'm not actually being disconnected at all. I cannot force this router to manually disconnect.
Is this a firmware bug or is there another setting else where that prevents me from manually shutting down my connection?

Took PC #1 home and hooked everything up. Could access Internet.Had to bring PC #2 home because #1 didn’t have the programs I needed.Hooked #2 up, no internet access.Tried different network cable – no access.Tried different router port – no access. I have had the router for over a year and it works fine, but I recently decided to attempt to have my 360 access the media on my computer by linking the two together through the Media Center. To do this, I needed to enable my router to allow UPnP (according to Microsoft help). When I did enable this, the router would disconnect me every 2-5 seconds from the internet, then would reconnect me right away.I have no clue why it was doing this (it occured across all of my devices) so I just disabled UPnP and things went back to normal. How to fix this so that I can have a consistent and stable connection when I have UPnP enabled?

I just bought a Linksys E4200v2 router and updated the firmware to 2.0.26.124551. The DHCP server is turned on however, it won't issue any IP addresses. I have to set IP reservations for all of my devices in order for the router to give them an IP address. This includes my printer, xbox360 and 2 computers. I'm also having this problem with the wired and wireless lan.

I'm running Windows 7 and have a dlink dir615 wireless router. I've had it for a year and never had this problem before. I changed the SSID to "router" and set a WPA encryption on the router's page. Now this SSID shows up and I can connect to it using the password I set, but it also shows up as a separate unencrypted connection under the default SSID "dlink".
How do I disable the unencrypted connection? I don't know why this is happening. I've set this up correctly a dozen times before.
I have a LinkSys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router located in my basement office. My IBM T42 ThinkPad running Windows XP Pro has an Intel(R) PRO Wireless 2200BG Network Connection adaptor. The signal strength on the main floor of our townhouse is ~ 80%. My problem is the signal frequently disconnects then recovers automatically causing frustration when browsing the internet. My question: Should I upgrade to a new Wireless N router OR purchase a WiFi Range Extender? since my laptop has a Wireless-G adaptor would a Wireless-N router provide a stronger signal?

It's been set at wpa2/wpa mixed mode all this time without a problem. Out of the blue: no wireless connection on any device. I restarted the modem, router, PC's, phones, etc. I've updated the firmware. The only way I can get a wireless connection is to use wep. How can I get the better security and speed of wpa2 back?

The computer will say "Connected, No Internet Access" In order to fix it I have to unplug the router and then plug it back in. This happens to any computer that tries to get online from a cold start-up. The router must always be unplugged, then plugged back in, then it will have internet access (and will generally maintain it throughout the session and even if the computer is restarted, i.e. warm boot). I have downloaded the latest firmware uprade.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a WRT 160N v2 router. There's 1 computer wired to it, that works fine. Then I have 2 laptops and a pc wireless to it. One laptop is a mac and that seems to be fine, another is a Compaq notebook that has trouble connecting and the pc has the same problem. The signal strength is very good to excellent so thats not the issue. What happens with the pc is, it will connect but at times its only for a few seconds then it disconnects. Sometimes restarting the computer fixes it for a while but it will eventually start having the problem again. It detects the wireless network just fine, and the router's firmware is up to date. I have a feeling that its the settings in the router but im not sure what to change.

All my devices can detect the router, they can connect, but once it comes to surfing on those devices, no pages are loading up despite being connected with excellent signal strength.
