SMC8014WN / Adding A Real Router To A Modem With Built-in Wireless?

Jun 28, 2012

I've been getting internet from a SMC8014WN Wireless Cable Modem gateway and I've been having sporadic connection issues ever since. I use Wireless USB Adapters on my own computer to connect to it from across a hallway and into another room and the connectivity is not very consistent. [URL]No matter what adapter I use (I have many) I sometimes get "now connected" messages and when I'm playing games like TF2 my connection either spikes, or drops and comes back (I'll get DC warnings and the game will freeze, and then come back in)

How To Bypass Router When It Has Built In Modem

Jun 28, 2011

How to bypass router to modem when the router has a built in modem? So my wireless router has a modem built into it, or is it the other way around: modem with built in router. I'm not sure...But anyway, because I am having such difficulties with the ps3 online, I have been told by many people to try bypassing the router straight to the modem.

D-link Dir-655 :: Arris Docsys3 Modem From Comcast Which Has A Built In Wifi Router

Aug 17, 2012

I have an ARRIS Docsys3 modem from Comcast which has a built in WiFi router. I also have a DIR-655. The Modem is in my office and I have a 100' Ethernet cable running through my attic to my front room where the dir-655 is located.

I use the DIR for WiFi as well I have it connected to my TV and Xbox.I use the ARRIS Modem for WiFi as well I have it connected to another Xbox and a Desktop computer.I want to have everything on 1 network, Dir-655 uses IP address 192.168.0.1-100 and the ARRIS uses ranges 10.0.0.1-100. I want to be able to connect to the dir-655 and have the IP for that connection join up with the 10.0.0... network so that I will be able to transfer files freely throughout the network.

I want everything on one network. Right now when I connect a laptop to the DIR-655, I can not access the printer that is connected to the Desktop on the ARRIS modem. I have to connect to the ARRIS modems WiFi to then use the printer on the desktop.Likewise, I want to use the media extender on the Xbox connected to the DIR-655 with the Desktop connected the the ARRIS modem, but I can not because of the to different networks.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Adding WRTG54 To Vigor ADSL Modem?

Sep 27, 2012

We have a Vigor ADSL modem linked to a hub that then links to 3 pc's and 2 printers all via ethernet. Connection to the outside world is fine.

A few weeks ago the IT geek decided to switch the modem from DHCP to PPPoA and put each pc & printer on fixed IPs. The Vigor is also on a static IP.

This therefore cut off our link to the Linksys WRTG54 we have in a different room serving as a wireless router.

The Linksys is/was connected via ethernet to port 1, port 2 direct to laptop. Wireless worked fine until they changed to static IP etc on the Vigor, now we only have ethernet to the laptop and no Wireless.

What do we need to do at the Linksys end to get wireless working again?

Linksys E1000 Wireless (N) Router / Add Real Or Fake IP For Software To Work?

Oct 31, 2011

I am about a level 4 maybe (10 being highest) when it comes to network configuration.I know what a router is, an IP addreess (external ones from ISP that is) and how to get around a little bit like how to access wireless config , edit properties on network connections and run ipconfig..My setup....I have a cable modem with 18mbs line...hooked into a Linksys E1000 wireless (N) router. From that I have 3 laptops setup (and a desktop thats never used).(none of whats next may be important but added it just in case)

Laptop a. is hardlined into wireless router (so I can edit config) and will be main machine it runs Vista
Laptop b. is connected to wirless connection from router and will main #2
Laptop c. is connected to wireless router
Desktop is connected to wireless router
(all others above run XP as OS)

My wife is running some webcam software that uses our internal IP address for its connection. It is no problem for her to connect her cam to the site with one laptop (any of the above) but when she tries to go to laptop b. and run another connection it says "You are currently broadcasting From This IP and cannot start another connection".

p.s. We have also tested bandwidth connection over and over on many sites (via browser) and it seems that when a cam is setup and the bandwidth is displayed what comes from / to the cam is WAYY slower than what we get in our tests...

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1200 V2 With No Internet Access Policy In Built

Sep 12, 2012

I just bought a factory refurbished E1200.  The label on the bottom says it is a Version 2 model.  When I purchased it, it was loaded with 2.0.02 firmware but I upgraded the firmware to 2.0.04.My problem is that I'm trying to setup MAC address-based restrictions thru the manual/web-based setup and when I click on the "Access Restrictions" tab, I only have simple "Parental Controls" and not the advanced "Internet Access Policy".Is it possible that I have a mislabeled V1 device?  If that is the case, how is it that I was able to upgrade the firmware using firmware from the V2 downloads section.

Do V! and V2 units use the same firmware but  more importantly, how do I upgrade the built-in software so that I have the advanced "Internet Access Policy" controls?

Adding A Second Modem To Increase Signal In A Part Of House

Feb 5, 2012

I initially had a laptop and a desktop with one Telkom router, running both wireless and wired (Ethernet cable)pics removed for security purpose. My daughters got laptops, and I bought a Netgear Wireless N300 Router/Modem for a better signal. The signal is good, but at the extremes of the house poor.I found on the internet a plan of a Windsurfer and built one. The results were not that impressive. So I thought to incorporate the first router (the Telkom router/modem) somewhere in the LAN for a boost.I changed the first (Telkom) router to a booster, but struggled (used advice from the internet) and stopped the exercise. Some settings were changed on the Telkom modem. So this was the situation for the past 2 years.

No Real Security With WPA2-PSK Wireless Network

May 11, 2012

I had assumed it was quite difficult or at least time consuming for anyone to break into a password protected WPA2-PSK encrypted wireless network. I'm still a novice or a learner when it comes to computer networking, so I realized this could be untrue.

Some days ago, my 9 year old nephew visited my parent's home where I had set up a WPA2-PSK encrypted network with what I know to be a strong password for both the router and the security phrase.

When I arrived back to my parent's home, I found out that my nephew was some how able to use the password encrypted network. There was no way he could have known the network password himself. I don't mind if my nephew uses our network, but it shows there are serious holes in the security of a WPA wireless network if he was able to bypass the password.

My parent's later told me that while I was away, my nephew was unable to connect to the network, and so used his cell phone and called his father (my brother-in-law). In just a short of time, my brother-in-law explained to my nephew how to bypass the password on our wireless network and use the internet. My parent's are not too happy about what happened and did not realize what my nephew and brother-in-law were doing at the time.

No matter what password is used to protect the network and no matter how complicated, my brother-in-law uses some type of technique to bypass them. And as demonstrated by the story above, he even uses his own children to bypass our network security.

I would greatly appreciate if some users could instruct me on how to better secure my parent's WPA-PSK2 network from this criminal to prevent the breaching from happening again. And if he was able to break through, then I'm guessing it really isn't too difficult for others to breach the security of a WPA-PSK2 network either.

Can't Connect Using IP Phone's Built-in Router?

Dec 28, 2012

I have no problems when the computer is connected to a router. That's how I'm posting here now. But my router is old and has no QOS. So the sound quality is choppy when I connect the phone to the router. So I tried connecting the phone directly to the cable modem, with the computer using the phone's router for internet. The phone's sound quality is great that way. But then the computer won't connect to the internet. When I hover over the network icon in the systray, it says "Local Area Connection 4 is now connected. Speed: 1.0 Gbps" The phone's router is a gigabit connection. So I think that tells me that the computer is seeing the phone/router and the cables are okay.I just tried to Repair through the network icon. It fails because it can't renew. I checked Window's Event Viewer to see what kind of error that might have created. This is the error:[CODE]

DGL-4300 - Router Ping Higher Than Built Pc Serving NAT And DHCP

Feb 22, 2011

"In the past I have noticed if I have one of my rigs running NAT and DHCP that my ping response times are lower compared to my router DGL-4300, when playing games. Is this due to the PC hardware being superior or is it a software/firmware thing?

Or is there a router out there that will perform better ping response time wise/ lag than my DGL-4300?"

Is this due to hardware or is it software/firmware? My NAT and DHCP box was a windows server 2003 configured with just those roles and my pings were in the 20-30 and I could host/join games no problem and no lag, but when I play through the Dlink DGL-4300 my pings would be 70-90 and some games I had lag issues and host/ join issues, sometimes it would work sometimes not.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Using Built-in Switch On 1801W Router?

I was wondering if it is possible to get the built-in switch (fastEthernet 1-8 interfaces) to be used as a part of the same network (192.168.1.0/24).

Fastethernet0 is connected to the school's main switch (24 port), but we could use a few more ports. I'd love to use the 8 ports on the router.

Adding Wireless Networking To A Router?

I know the number of ports can easily be expanded using a switch, but is it possible to buy a piece of hardware which could be plugged into the router to broadcast a wireless signal as well? I have looked quite thoroughly for anything that could do this but I`m pretty new to networking

Adding A WAP Along Side A Wireless Router?

Dec 28, 2012

She has comcast xfinity with a the SMCD3GNV router which if you ever look it up has the worst wireless signal imaginable and I can second that. I was hoping to not have to touch the SMCD3GNV router and just add on to it by attaching a secondary router as a wap. What I plan to do (which I am sure has been exasterbated in forums but just want clarity) was to disable DHCP on the new n router ( cheaper than official wap) and set ip out of SMCD3GNV router DHCP ip range but in same subnet mask so probably 192.168.1.2. Then connect the SMCD3GNV router to the new router via ethernet and dont use wan port. Is this basically all I have to do? Do I need to change the channels on either devices since their next to eachother? or will them being next to eachother and same channel cause interference? I have read I can call comcast and turn the smcd3gnv into a bridge ( plain modem) but I would rather avoid calling them and see if 2 wireless access points next to eachother is okay. Also, I plan on doing this by going to microcenter.com and getting a router for 24.99 or less with a coupon I have. Is there any on their website that you would recommend for this setup? Also if you could check the wap on their website and see if you think its worth it to get one of those instead if under that price as well. I want to utilize wireless n signal . Also, the xfinity service she has is rated for 50mbps download and cannot remember the upload , I have tested this wired and it does actually achieve this or greater.

Built-in Wireless Adapter Cable Unplugged

May 15, 2011

Last night, my internet was working perfectly and I closed my computer lid before going to sleep as usual. This morning, I wake up to use my computer and the internet isn't working. I check the icon at the top and instead of showing an empty wireless meter with an X over it, it shows a computer and a cable with an X over it, which isn't normal. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5532 with a built in wireless adapter and it has a button near the power button that turns the adapter on and off. I decided to turn it off, give it a while, and turn it on, but that didn't fix it, so I restarted the computer.

Now, when I try to turn it on an off, it gives the wireless symbol with a circled X over it. I have checked the device in Device Manager to see if it is working and it says it is working properly. So I uninstalled it, restarted and the computer automatically installed software like it should, but that didn't fix it. I tried a System Restore, but that didn't work as well. Another thing I should mention is that I have tried rolling back the driver (which didn't fix anything), then I updated it, which also didn't fix anything.

Is there anything else I should try? The only thing Diagnostics can detect is an unplugged cable, but it's built in, so it doesn't require a cable (I've had it for >1 year and this is the first problem I've had).I downloaded Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector and it says no wireless adapters can be found.
