SW For Performing Scheduled Speed Tests On Internet Connection?

Jul 12, 2011

We're since long having a problem with a DSL internet connection. The connection goes down periodically, for short times, and when performing speed tests, the connection speed varies and is usually lower (0.7 Mbit/s) than what the ISP promises (1.5-2 Mbit/s). Moreover, what modem is being used seems to have an effect. Now, I want to trouble-shoot this and get some hard facts on the behaviour of the connection. I would like to do repeated speed tests over say 24 h or so. They should be done every 3 min or so (to catch short glitches).

My question is: what software tool can I use for this? I have been searching the internet for hours, downloading a handful of applications, without finding anything that I could use. There are loads of applications that log and graph the current upload and download speeds, but that's something else - I need a tool that downloads/uploads files from/to a server, in intervals specified by me (3 min), logging the result and presenting it graphically.

Speed Tests High But Slow Internet

Sep 30, 2011

I'm new to the site and for the past couple of days I've been trying to figure out why my connection is so slow. I only get about 180kbps of download speeds so I originally thought it was my internet, but I went to test my connection speed on speedtest.net and I get around 1mbps. I also checked my network utilization through task manager and I'm not even using 1% Any Ideas as to why I can't make full use of my connection?

Internet Speeds Never Reach As Fast As Speed Tests

Att says they are giving us 3mb/sec but we get 300kbps and speed tests from anywhere say we get 2.5 to 2.9 mb/sec yet even on unlimited bandwidth downloads(like torrents) with thousands of seeds connected and a few peers they never get faster than 340kb/sec.

Netgear WNDR3700 - Well Performing Card To Make Up No Hardwired Connection

Jul 2, 2011

I'm going to be moving into a place in the next couple months where I'll have to go wireless on my desktop (until now I've just done Ethernet so I don't even have a wifi card on my desktop). The router/modem aren't anywhere near my bedroom so my gear will be going wireless from now on All my devices are built-in wifi ready but not my desktop.

I would like recommendations as to a rock-solid, reliable, fast and well performing card as I can to make up for no hardwired connection. Especially with BF3 coming out I'm not all that thrilled with being forced into this situation but you gotta do what you gotta do. Anyhow, I'll be bringing my router (Netgear WNDR3700) so I'll have the range and speed from there about as good as I can get, so I'd like a card of equal merit.

One side note...probably not really feasible considering I want speed and performance as a priority, but I would love a card (if possible) without bullshit antennas sticking out of the case, or with external antennas you have to set up on your desk. I will go that route if I have to but man that is an aesthetic nightmare, IMO. The ones that stick out of the back of the case are the worst looking for me just as a caveat.

WRT54G - Internet Slow Down And Upload Tests Not Working?

Jan 6, 2011

So I've noticed a big speed drop in my comcast internet. I went from routinely scoring over 20mbps on speedtest.net to around 11. Also, the upload test fails everytime. On every speed test site I've been to, the upload test completely fails. I haven't changed a thing so I have no clue why this would happen, but maybe it might have something to do with the speed decline.

I have an old WRT54G router that I've had for almost 10 years and I was thinking that maybe that was the problem. So I tried directly connecting my modem to my rig, but for whatever reason, I couldn't get it to work.

I can build unbeatable gaming rigs and program like crazy, but I just do not have networking in my skill set. It confuses the hell out of me and always seems to be completely random. What I can do to isolate and resolve my problem?

Oh, on one of the upload tests I got the following error.

"Trial measurement failed. Client can't send/receive UDP packs to server port 8601".

Internet Connection Slow Speed / Weak Signal?

Aug 31, 2011

We have cable internet through a wireless router. It seems to be the case that after we have had a router for about a year, my wife begins having trouble with her internet connection; slow speed, no connection, weak signal, etc. Resetting the router and cable modem will fix the problem, but the fix is only for a short time (an hour or a day). We purchase and install a new router, and everything is fine for about a year, then the problems re-emerge.I can't believe that a router "wears out" after a year or so, but that is certainly how it appears. My wife has a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7, I have a Mac, and our son has a Samsung with WIN 7. I don't experience these problems, and my son does not to the extent my wife does. There is obviously something going on with the Toshiba or its interface with the router, but rebooting the computer doesn't have any effect.

I called the engineer out but he wasnt able to do anything because when he connected it to his laptop, he was getting speeds of 47mb. He said he didnt know why i was getting such a slow speed through my desktop, just said it must have something to do with my computer.

Cisco Routers :: RV180 Decreases Internet Connection Speed?

Mar 9, 2013

My internet connection speed, measured by speedtest.net with PC connected directly to cable modem, is ping=33ms, dn=48Mbps and up=7.6Mbps. (These values changes slightly with each test, sometimes being a bit higher and sometimes a bit slower, but usually being in the neighborhood of the 50Mbps promised by my ISP.)  When this same test is run with the PC connected directly to a port on my RV180 (firmware version 1.0.1.9) the measured speed is ping=35ms, dn=30.66Mbps and up=7.45Mbps. Given that the RV180 is supposed to provide very fast WAN to LAN throughput (Small Net Builder's test result is 798Mbps dn and 811 up, measured with the same firmware version), why is my unit seemingly decreasing the internet connection (WAN) speed coming out of my cable modem?  What, if anything, can I do to increase my WAN to LAN throughput?

I have just purchased the Ultrabook XPS L321X and it is manufacture setting, however the internet speed is very slow.

I tried everything, but I did not find a possible issue why the speed is slower than my older computer.

Backup To External Drive Not Performing?

Mar 11, 2011

I am not sure whether this is the right category to which I should submit my question, but I couldn't find a section for "other software support" or anything like that.I am running Windows SBS 2003 at one of my clients and we are using Syncback as the backup software to backup important files and folders that gets written to the server on a daily basis. Now we are using two external drives for this purpose, alternating the two every second day, for improved security.However...I have set up the backup profiles exaclty with the same configurations and everything...everything is identical. But the backup to one of my drives does not want to perform giving the error : "the folder on the destination drive does not exist and can't be created"The folder does exist though, and what puzzles me is that running the backup manually or even copying files manually from the same server backup folders to the drive works perfectly, but when running the scheduled backup, it fails...and yes, the logon and authentication is set to "run as administrator" and the username and password is entered correctly.Like I said, the configs of the two drives are exactly the same, and the backup to the other drive works perfectly.I am using the Syncback free version, and support for the free version on the 2Brightsparks website is unavailable

Cisco WAN :: 2900 Network Performing Slow

Feb 7, 2012

I have this small network comprising of around 40 users complaining about the poor speed. And they have 2900 WAN router having 10M service. The interesting thing is that they are using proxy server for all the communication.I am very new to the server side of thing-and wanted to confirm if the proxy server is packed full to its capacity for serving to clients' requests making it slow or its something to do on the network like WAN link being overloaded or showing errors.I did "sh interface g0/1" (WAN interface) and to me it looks there is not much load as the tx and rxload values are fairly ok. (as shown below). Moreover the output drops is 7341. I am still guessing if thats not too bad??

The other thing I did was to test the "sh ip nat transalations" which is all coming from the PRoxy server and was wondering if that is the place of bottleneck. Currently there were showing around 570 entries. Below are the output from there as well. Also, I was keen to know what is the "----" indicates in some of th output? [code]

Cisco WAN :: 3750 Performing QOS Against Number Of SVI VLans On Per Customer Basis

Apr 29, 2012

I have a Cisco 3750 switch stack and am performing QOS against a number of SVI vlans on per customer basis.  I have 8 customers, each with a /29 public subnet and each with an SVI as a gateway within that /29 range.  I then have a "routable" SVI vlan for routing upstream to the internet. [code]

The service policy attached to the interfaces above is supposed to perform policing on download and upload traffic.  The service policy is attached to the Routable VLAN for download policing and the Customer VLAN for upload policing.  For example, traffic entering the routable VLAN will be policed based on traffic matching an access list to the customers IP range (download).  Traffic entering the customer VLAN will be policed based on traffic matching an access list from the customers IP range (upload). The command I am using to police is as follows - police 10485500 966080 exceed-action drop. The problem I am experiencing is traffic into the routable VLAN is being successfully policed down to the 10Mbps i have specified on a per customer basis (download).Traffic entering the customer VLAN is NOT being policed at all (upload).I am limited as to the use of the parent policy map I have specified on the interface, as I can only assign it in one direction (input).

Network Crash - Ping Tests Won't Respond To Anything?

Feb 6, 2013

About a week ago, our network started to experience complete failure.

Our Equipment:

Router: Netgear FVS336.xxx
Switch: Dlink DES-1024D (we have 6 of these switches in our building)
Wifi Routers: Dlink DIR-601, Linksys wrt54g, wrt54gv2
Computersservers: 40x
Copiersfax: 5x
Wireless clients: (iphones, laptops) at least 30

All has been working together in harmony for many years.Fast forward to last week when my hell began with intermittent crashes. Not sure what's causing the problem. When it happens, everybody loses their internet, the ability to communicate over the network; ping tests won't respond to anything (including the router) that exists on the lan, even with a static IP against other statics. In visually inspection of the switches and router, they seem to be happily blinking away with no apparent issue (visually). The only way I've been able to fix the problem is by power cycling the router.About 1 second after doing that, we're back in action for 2-6 hours (very unpredictable).I never had to power cycle any other devices)

Steps I've taken in troubleshootingeliminating potential culprits:

Replaced the router with a spare (new) FVS318G

Replaced the power supply for the router (suspected because problem remained after router swap)

Replaced cable going from router to lan switch

Removed linksys wifi router from network (the router had needed power cycling weekly and was old. So I unplugged it)

Removed Dlink wifi router from network (I hate dlink routers, so removed it).I'm at a loss.

Cisco :: LMS 4.0 Reachability Tests For Simple IP Address?

is it possible with LMS 4.0 to do a simple reachability test for an IP address not based on device? The ip address I want to check for reacheability is not the management ip address I add in Inventory->Device Administration->Add->Device Properties->IP Address For example: I want to test the reachabilty of the IP-address 10.113.15.4, not management ip, it shall be an interface ip address. With the performance monitoring I want to test the reachability, if it fails continuously 2 times I want to get a notification with an low severity. After 6 continuously fails of the reachability test I want to get a notification with an medium severity and in the end after 12 continuously fails of the reachability test I want to get a notification with an criticaclc severity. The threshold configuration and the threshold criteria should not be the problem, the problem is where do/can I enter the corresponding ip address I want to test.

Cisco Firewall :: Failover On ASA5510 - Reason Of Interface Tests

Jun 24, 2011

Do I correctly understand that when two ASA 5510 are in fail over pair, the switchover from primary to secondary if one interface of primary goes down shall happen ONLY if failover link is up? So when the fail over link is down and one interface on primary got down also,  interface tests between the two ASAs still are being done , but secondary SHALL NEVER try to become active.

In this case why to make  tests on data interfaces ? What is the reason to make them? If the knowledge of that some interfaces  of primary became down comes through failover link - no need to make additional interface tests - primary will tell about the failure to secondary. If so should run no monitor-interface  if name command to dis load devices and network by foolish  tests?

Scheduled Load Balancing With Multiple ISPs?

Oct 23, 2011

Friend of mine has a setup out in the sticks, currently with two ISPs: Hughesnet satellite, and a line-of-sight WiFi provider; they're also getting a cel tower within range soon and he's looking at adding an HSPA/LTE connection via that as well.the first gives him a static IP and ridiculous speed and bandwidth at night... but far less speed and a painfully low bandwidth cap during the day (you go over, you pay through the nose).

The second gives lots of bandwidth but poor speeds (difficult to even watch a YouTube video) and a constantly-changing dynamic IP.The third, once implemented, will give him good speeds and decent bandwidth (I believe up to 10GB/mo) but again, will get spendy if he goes over that limit.Right now, I've got him set up with both routers plugged into the same network, multi-homed the NICs on his machines (192.168.0.* for Hughes, 192.168.1.* for LOS) and a little script on each computer that will change the default gateway to let him select which ISP he wants to use... however, it's going to get trickier with a third, and will make it even tougher to keep track of the bandwidth used on each one... especially with multiple computers, a DVR, and two users.

So I'm looking for some way to automate all this... something that will, say, use the HSPA feed most of the time for his whole home network, switch to LOS if it gets near the cap, and switch everything over to the satellite automatically during "unlimited" hours. Again, I'm not opposed to setting up something PC-based with the appropriate software, although for my own sanity, it would really need to be Windows-based (I'm way below n00b with Linux).
