Setting Up New Router Without A Disc Drive?
May 26, 2012
Just purchased a Linksys wireless router without realizing that it comes with a start-up CD and of course my Dell netbook does not have a disc drive.
I thought about bringing my laptop home from work and but then would I then always have to lug it home each night in order to use wireless in my apartment?

I've setup a home network using Netgear N300 wireless router (using Windows 7).
I'm trying to get one of my hard drives to be available on the network, so I went to the "sharing" tab of the HD's properties setting and allowed sharing on the HD and turned off password protection so that you don't need a password to access the HD.I also set the permissions to give full control, change, and read access to the "Everyone" group.
From another computer in the network, I tried connecting to the network HD but ultimately got "Access denied" despite the fact that I gave full control to "Everyone".How do I get the computer to be able to connect to the shared HD?

I just bought a Linksys E4200 from bestbuy tonight, mostly for the feature of plugging my hard drive into it to use it as a media server, and being able to read & write to it from any computer on my network. I have searched for hours on end trying to fix my problem. I login to my router (at 192.168.1.1), I go to the storage tab, I then click the "Create Share" button next to my WD hard drive in the list and nothing happens. Ive tried this on four different computers, and three different browsers now to no avail.
Some random information:
Computer: Dell XPS 420
Router: Linksys E4200
Hard Drive: WD 1TB

I wanted to set Belkin Share Max n300 as an access point. I followed the instructions, set the IP address to the suggested one and connected it to the main router. It worked, computer connected to the Belkin via wire was getting IP address from DHCP on main router. But: The Belkin device itself became invisible. I lost connection to Belkin device via config page via HTTP. It does not respond to any IP address so I actually cannot use it for purpose I wanted to set up secondary Wi-fi, I just cannot configure it. Also I wanted to use USB ports of the Belkin to connect external drives. I cannot do it as well. More over it does not go back. It does not reset to the original router option.

I wanted my latptop to be reset so I could give it to a friend. Everything worked fine before I ran the OS disk. Now I try to connec to the internet and it wont work. The message "this computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured" popped up. So I tried to plug in a an ethernet cable and it still wont let me connect to the internet! In my device manager bar under other devices a network controller is there with a yellow excplanation point. So I was going to go to the dell link provided in another forum and update the drivers, but I cant do that if I cant connect to the internet at all! My laptop is a dell inspiron 1545.

I'm currently in college, and do most things with my laptop, and I have wifi just about everywhere. It has a generous 500 GB of storage, but I'd like to store non-essential files on, an external hard drive. However, lugging around 3 TB of storage isn't exactly feasible, and with my experience with my current 1.5 TB portable drive, me running around everywhere with it bouncing in my bag is just going to abuse it until it stops functioning (which it has...)[URL]

I am currently using a backup program that I thought would back up from any location including a NAS drive but this is not the case. The backup program does not show the NAS drive directory... I was just wondering if there is a way of making a NAS drive appear as a local drive. I've mapped the drive and created symbolic links for it as well and it still does not appear. I was planning on using the iSCSI method but I believe my NAS does not support it.

I replaced my router with a Motorola Surfboard cable modem/router combo. Since then I cannot access my backup hard drive (buffalo linkstation 250g about 8 yrs old). Everything worked fine before I replaced the router. The only thing I have on my network is my HP laptop, vonage box and hard drive. Windows 7, Explorer 9.Router: 192.168.0.1 HD: 192.168.1.150I've tried "tracert" and only get back the router address. I've tried connecting directly from my laptop to the HD and tried the ip instead of the 'name'. I replaced the cables, rebooted the laptop, router and hard drive. I also went through the whole "add devices" on "devices and printers" and "search network for devices"

I have the Dlink DIR 615 router, windows 7, and this morning, it suddenly started to shutdown and restart, over and over. I unplugged all ethernet connections, shut down, etc. and slowly added the PC, then the phone, until when I plugged in the Western Digital 2TB My Book live, it would begin the same restart process. I can now repeat the issue by unplugging, and replugging the drive. I have had the network drive for about 3 months, and this started today.

I've read the various threads on here and tried all the fixes suggested and I still cannot get my PS3 to "see" the USB drive I've attached to my router.I can see it and access the files from a connected computer, but not the PS3.I've tried creating a share with one directory and sharing the entire partition with no luck. I've enabled all the FTP options with no luck. UPNP is enabled. I've tried setting up the guest account with no luck.I've tried restarting, unplugging with no luck either. I also went into the USB drive and reformatted and started all over again. My PS3 can easily see the other computers on the network, but I would like to use the USB port on the router to not have to have a computer running to stream music. Is there another menu location on the PS3 I should be using to locate the USB? Currently I just look under music or video and the other computers are there. Just not the USB.

I have a WD, 1TB, external harddrive with a USB connection and would like to know if it is possible to get a USB hub with an ethernet connector to connect into the back of my router. Is it possible to do this? If so, what will I need to do? Will I need to give the external drive a static IP address, then partition it?

I'm not exactly sure if this is a networking problem or a Windows problem. I have a Linksys ea3500 router to which I have connected a WD My Book external drive via the USB port. When I view the router's webpage, I can see my drive listed under the storage tab; however, I cannot map the drive on my laptop. Whenever I try to do so, it gives me the 0x80070035 error. If I run the Windows diagnostic, it tells me the drive will not accept the connection.

I have a Netgear Rangemax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router (model WNDR3700). I used to live in a small place so I connected my external hard drive direct to my laptop. However, now that I have a bigger place i want to connect the ext hard drive to the router so I can take my computer where I want. However, I cannot connect the hard drive to the router. I can plug it into the router, of course, but it will not appear under the Network folders (I use Window's Vista).

I want to know if it is possible, and how is so, to run a server OS or any hosting software from a hard drive that is networked and attached to my router and not to a computer? I currently have a mixed home network of OSes, Mac OS X SL, 2 Windows 7 machines, and various tablets and smartphones. I have a 2TB hard drive attached to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (current generation.) The main thing I want the server for is to host for media, iTunes. The Home Sharing function is kosher for in home network use, but I would like to be able to access my media on from outside as well. Optimally I would love to have OS X server on just the drive
