Sharing :: Networking Only Working One Way
Jul 1, 2011
i have previously never had a problem setting up a network at home enabling sharing of files and printers with up to 4 computers with them all using all the resources/printers of each computer.i have now just 2 computers my main computer can use resources of my other computer, but this is not reciprocated.pc 1 can access pc 2 with no issue pc2 can not access pc1 unless i drop a shortcut onto the shared docs of pc2.
things i have tried:
- turning off firewalls
- running ms networking tool
- maually setting up a network
- connecting pc2 to pc3 with no issue with recripocal sharing of files/printers etc
- switching off file sharing and back on
- numerous pc restarts
- ensuring pc names/workgroups etc are correct
i am at a loss as to how i can get pc2 to start using the printer on pc1; i have just swapped pc2 for a different machine and the ame problem exists so the problem, as far as i can tell, must be with a problem on pc1 not allowing access; when you try and click on pc1 as a workgroup pc it denies access.

i have a "not so fast" DSL connection at home and i need it for work. unfortunately for me, i have 3 siblings, each having their own laptops who abused the bandwidth by downloading stuffs and streaming videos. i have the idea to share them connection by reconfiguring the current network topology (internet--modem--wifi router--my desktop--3 laptops.) to (internet--modem--NIC 1 of my desktop--NIC 2--wifi router--3 laptops.) using windows ICS and bought ANTAMEDIA BANDWIDTH MANAGER in order to prioritize the connection to my Desktop.

Right now every computer is connected through a workgroup and some computers are sharing files to everyone and some need a login to share other files. I want to run a main server where all the files are on that computer and have it share all the files to everyone else on the network. I'm not too familiar with Windows workgroup networking and file sharing.I want to have certain files accessible to certain computers and certain files accessible to everyone on the network. I'm under the impression that I have to have the main server with all the business documents. Then create separate accounts on the server and hand them out to each individual computer. After, go to each document and specify who can access what with read/write. Can I share some files to everyone and have certain files limited to other computers at the same time? How would someone access the shared files when you need a login and will this login conflict with files shared to everyone and files shared to certain people. I remember on my small business network I need a login for certain computers because it is shared to only certain people then how would I access the files shared to everyone when I have to login to see the server files to begin with?

I got a Monoprice Networking USB 2.0 Server and it doesn't appear to be working. I hooked it to my router (Linksys E1000) and I have my usb printer hooked to the device. The driver for the printer is installed for the server. When I go to print something I get a popup saying "checking status of printer," it hangs for a minute, and then says "printer not responding." There's no indication of the server or the printer in my network. How do I get this thing working

I have a Dell Desktop Studio running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2.Since I got my PC new, almost 3 years ago, I have regularly gotten a Windows error "Advanced Networking Services stopped working." Windows never finds a solution when I click on that option. I've always ignored the message because I do no networking, but now I want to set up a wireless network so I can stream to my TV.

Two days ago there was a quick power outage here, just one of those flicks off flicks back on deals, but when it came back on I noticed my internet wasn't working. Couldn't figure out what the deal was so after trying a few other things I ended up eliminating my Linksys WRT54G router and just using my DSL modem. Internet works fine.
Now, I've always been kind of sketchy on networking stuff, but I don't think there router is broken I just think it's been reset or something and now I don't know what setting I need to change to get it back to working order.
Here's the kicker though. I had the DSL modem in bridge mode and the router handling traffic before but I had a huge issue with that where my Steam would only download at 10-15 KB/s. Not only that but it would take forever to login and crash constantly. This would happen on my brother's computer too, which is on the same network. I could never figure out how to fix it as forwarding ports had no effect and every other fix I could think of amounted to nothing as well. Hell, I even did a fresh install to no avail.
Now going straight into the modem my Steam is downloading at full speed and there's no slow login or crashing issues. The thing that boggles my mind though is that more than once before I tried doing this very same thing, going straight into the modem, and it didn't fix the problem.
Ideally I want to get the router back up and running and keep my Steam in full working order, essentially to have my cake and eat it too, but the priority is to get the router back up in running as I have another PC on this network, plus a 360, a PC, a wireless printer, and two Wii's.

Running Firmware v. 1.00.19 here, which I reckon is the most recent version.
My network consists of two Macbooks, an iMac and two iPhones. It utilizes WAP2 encryption and all devices are well within range, the environment being free of interferences from any other WiFi signals (this is a rural area).
My problem: Bonjour networking stops working after a few minutes or hours. When the problem appears, WIRED devices can see all other peers in the network (both wired and wireless), but WIRELESS devices cannot see any other peers whatsoever (wired or wireless).
I have heard that this could be because of a faulty implementation of uPNP by Linksys, and in particular a problem with multicast filtering (and unfortunately the modem/router's firmware does not provide any relevant settings). But I am not sure.
I purchased this thing with the express purpose to use it on a Mac-only network, and I am thoroughly disappointed to see that it does not work, especially since UPNP is supposed to be supported.

I have my main pc downstairs, which is choc full of media files, work documents and the likes, and my laptop upstairs which is next to empty as I only use it for work/watching things. My issue is, on the main pc I have downstairs I have a few folders shared, completely open to everyone on the LAN. Few videos, pictures etc. I used the exact same sharing method for each folder I wanted to share, yet, when I get upstairs on the laptop, I can see the folders I've shared, but can only access like, 2 or 3 of 6 folders, the rest tell me; 'Windows cannot access \PCHEREFOLDER HERE, you do not have permission'. I've made sure of permissions etc on my main rig, tried unsharing and resharing the folder but to no avail, both have systems have different names, environment set to home etc? Homegroup wont work for some reason, both systems seem to think they're a part of a homegroup that didn't/hasn't ever existed and how to delete the homegroup from the network.

So here's my setup:Computer A is connected directly to a cable modem box via USB. Computer B (which is sometimes a laptop and sometimes a desktop) is connected to Computer A and shares its internet connection via Ethernet because I am too cheap to buy a router.A few days ago we borrowed a Belkin wireless router so we could have both desktops, the laptop, and my fiance's iPod Touch access the internet at the same time. That worked fine but once we returned the router and tried to put everything back to normal, it didn't work. The only computer able to access the internet is Computer A (or whichever one is directly connected).I tried resetting the modem and restarting both machines. I tried disabling all of the connections that showed up from using the router.Windows states that the IP isn't properly configured or something of that nature. I tried setting it to automatically set the IP but to no avail. Here is the part that really confuses me - I can access Computer B from Computer A via LAN using the ethernet cable, so the connection between the two computers is fine.

I'm running into several issues with certain .AVI files I've been downloading from MegaUpload, happening on two computers.Upon download of the video, Windows Media Player won't play it, Media Player Classic brings up AVI Chunk Viewer instead of playing it, and VLC offers to fix it but only manages to make a few seconds of it play (out of ~15 minutes).I can open it in VirtualDub and export as AVI, but the quality becomes ruined. Several multicolored glitchy looking boxes cover a lot of the screen periodically which wouldn't normally be there. This shows up before export as well.

I have recently upgraded my router to a Belkin N750 DB and am having issues getting remote desktop connection working. Previously I had a Netgear router and it was working no problems at all.I have port forwarded (virtual server on Belkin) port 3389 TCP to the servers IP address.I can get Remote desktop connection to work when I am within my LAN by just typing the computers name. However when I try to connect via the IP address, as I would if I were away from home, then I get the message that says "remote desktop cannot connect for one of these reasons
1) remote access not enabled (it is because it worked before)
2) remote computer is turned off (no it isn't)
3) remote computer is no available" (yes it is cause can connect from LAN)
Turned off static IP for my server and let the router assign IP, and changed the IP address in the port forward, same, no connection.Double, triple checked my IP address, as this obviously changed when I plugged in the new router.Have updated to latest firmware for router and NIC.

I have 3 computers, all Macs. Two are hooked into my WRT54GP2 via ethernet cables, and one is using WiFi (Airport Extreme). All get an IP number from the router via DCHP (no hard numbers). The router is also hooked up to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. The two Macs using ethernet have no problems at all, and can access the internet and share files and printers. The WiFi Mac, however, can access the Internet fine, but cannot mount the other machines as file servers. It doesn't even ping them. What is going on in the setup of the router that is preventing the ethernet machines from being seen properly by the WiFi Mac?

I tried searching google and Cisco Home Community for this answer, but no luck. Maybe I didn't phrase my search correctly. I have an external drive connected to a mac mini which is shared on the network. When transferring folders to or from that external drive, our internet connection stops working until the transfer finishes, then comes back up. I've tested this in a variety of ways. Any transfer of data from shared folders in any combination of devices causes internet to stop working both on wired and wireless devices until the transfer is done, then they all work again. Router firmware: 1.0.03.

I recently installed a very basic version of XP on my old laptop (Gateway MT3707).After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I found them, and installed them. After installing the correct drivers for wireless internet I was able to pull up the list and find my network on it.When double clicking on our wireless network it asks for a network key (also called WEP key or WPA key). Now we have a password for our network, but after an exhausting amount of tries that won't work. I not sure if that is what its looking for. In our apartment we run mac OSX, windows vista, etc., but usually the password for the network is satisfactory. I have never ran into this problem.I hate to be a noob, but I don't know where to go from here.

(2 much 2 ask for both)
Main Issues
--Will NAS work with PS3?
--Incase of a computer, i know i will be able to use logmein or gotomypc to Download files directly to that machine even when im not home and when i do get home its ready to go. Can the same be achieved with a NAS?What else should i consider? i.e. pros and cons of both.

Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems. I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password. Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '' or 'SYSTEMNAME' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

[code] Basically, we used to use Outlook for our customer management, but after I tried to design a custom form for customers that suited our needs better than Outlook's default form (i.e. we don't need state, country, region, etc. for each customer, and we'd prefer to have spots for Roof, Shingle, Shingle color, etc. in their place), we ended up turning OneNote into our new Customer Management System. Our problem is sharing files, and the security or lack thereof that goes along with it.We used to save all the files to a single computer, and use Windows 7 Home group to access them. That worked okay, but often we couldn't see the file-holding computer, and would have to disconnect/reconnect to the internet.
We recently bought a NAS HD, which actually works a lot better than I expected. Unfortunately, we've learned recently that new employees are not always the most trustworthy. So this is what we are trying to do:We want to set up some type of way for us to save, store, and access files, which allows us to keep track of who has done what (access, save, copy, delete, print, etc.), preferably one where we can set up alerts if certain things happen (i.e. someone copies and pastes the entire thing, or attempts to delete). We've run into the problem where, yes, we want people to be able to copy and paste certain documents, yes we want people to be able to print, but no we don't want someone to be able to print out our entire customer lists, current project lists, etc. This NAS HD (MyBook Live 2TB by Western Digital) could quite possibly have the most ridiculous set up I've ever encountered. I can set up accounts and passwords, but they are completely irrelevant because from "Computer" you can just select the z:/ drive and it will still take you to our files. We just brought on a couple new people, and its like, everyone tells them to come to me in regards to the computers, and I can't even hook them up to the internet because it would give them access to our network, which in turn gives them access to our z:/ drive, which contains every file our company has.

To fix this I have had to connect my old netgear box (which I call virgin media 8) to the new one via 10m of CAT5e but now I can't access my shared printer or shared folders on my win xp pc which is connected to virgin media 7 via wireless if my vista laptop is connected to virgin media 8.
