Vista Switches To Network
Jun 2, 2011
the problem is that for no apparent reason at no apparent interval the net on my laptop will go to just a local only connection. when i tell vista to repair it, it says either dns problem or connectivity issue, the way i get past it is to disable the wireless connection then re-enable it. i think my laptop is the only machine effected.

My laptop is unable to connect to the internet. It recognizes my wireless connection (public network) as "unidentified network" and Access: "Local only." I've tried using many other solutions but I still haven't found a way to fix this. My other laptops, computers, and gaming devices are able to connect to my linksys router except for this laptop. I have Virgin Media services, I had a problem with my cable, which an engineer was booked for, but it magically fixed itself, so I cancelled the engineer. The engineer turned up for the appointment, which I was out for, then urged me over the phone to keep his number, and call me if I had any problems. I got home an hour later and my modem wouldn't sync. My guess is he did something with it outside so he would still get paid for the job. I called him up, and he came round and instantly replaced my old Virgin modem (which I was using with my own Belkin wireless router) with a new Virgin (Netgear) hub.I'm giving this bit of background to demonstrate, everything was fine before. [code] Since getting the new hub, I set up the wireless connections on the laptop and console, and internet is working fine. However none of the devices can share with eachother. When I go to network on either computer, neither computer sees either computer. All the sharing settings that I had before are unchanged, all that has changed is my modem/router combo has been replaced by a hub.

I recently reinstalled Vista on my Dell laptop. Before that,I could view and open shared files on my XP desktop, although the PC couldn't see the laptop. Now, I can get online, but can't see the PC in Network places.I've ensured both have same workgroup name.I think it may be due to Norton Internet Security, which I've renewed and reinstalled from new disk. But the former one didn't prevent file-sharing, albeit one way,XP to Vista. Before I uninstall Norton again, is there anything else I should have done after Vista reinstall ?

We have a router and wireless network at my house, but i am the only one in the house who cannot connect to the wifi with my laptop. Well, i can connect to the network, but my computer won't connect to the internet. I've tried power cycling the router/modem several different times, to no avail. My Computer has been working perfectly fine, the connection super and the network perfect. But for some reason I go to sleep everything's fine and now zilch. It say's im connected to my network but that it's unidentified and I can't get on to my Internet. It's just that computer though, everything else like this laptop can connect to the network and the internet. No changes were made so i'm really not sure what has caused this. Nothings new either. My signal strength is excellent as well. Password Protected sharing has been off, has this compromised me?

I recently bought a windows laptop running vista to do windows testing on for web development (I use macs normally).I was shocked to find that I can't simply push connect, enter a key and then be connected to our home wireless network... no of course not because it's windows and nothing is easy or practical.Anyhow, before I go on an anti windows rant, I actually need this working. So at home we have a wireless network secured by a 32bit WEP key.On our macs I simply push connect, enter this key and we're away. With my new vista machine I go to Network & Sharing Center -> Connect to a network and click our network.I'm then immediately met with a screen that says "Press the configuration button on your access point". I have no idea what this means.Down the bottom of the screen there is an option that says "I can't find the configuration button... I want to enter the network key or passphrase instead" Which I click. The next screen I click "Enter/Select additional log on information" but this brings up a user name/ password/ login domain screen... I just want to enter my 32 bit key and be connected. I'm using a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router. Also, when I run "ipconfig" in the command prompt I get."Media State....: Media disconnected"

Local Access Only on Vista PC
I restored an old Vista laptop to out-of-the-box state to give to my Dad. This laptop had a wireless connection to the internet and network previously. After the restore, I can't get a connection to the internet, even though my router sees it and it has an ip address. It says Unidentified Network Local Access only, and it doesn't see any of the computers on the network. Sometimes the other computers see it but can't connect, sometimes, the other computers don't see it. I hate Vista.
Stats on Laptop:
Toshiba A215-S4747
Atheros AR5007EG
All my other eight devices have an internet connection no problem, but I powered off the modem and router a couple of times with no change. I tried updating the Atheros to the latest driver on Toshiba's website for this model, but it doesn't seem to take. If I uninstall the old drivers, Windows rudely just immediately reinstalls them again. If I just update the driver, and pick the new file, the driver version remains the same as the previous driver. I'm banging my head on the wall with the driver
Ping successful on:
192.168.1.11 (the laptop's IP address)
localhost

My friends has a compaq computer running vista that can't connect to the internet. The computer can see networks, but when it tries to connect to them it says, "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual". We've tried hooking it up directly to the router with a LAN cable, but that doesn't work either. On his windows update it says there's an update ready for his wireless card driver, but you have to be able to connect to the internet to download it.

My laptop simply decided to stop connecting to my wireless network.I'm at a loss as to why and what to do. All other devices in my house are getting a perfect signal from the network but my computer either can't find it, or only has 1 green bar and says it cannot connect. I've tried a system restore, I've tried to troubleshoot on my computer and can't figure it out. The weird thing is it is picking up other wireless signals fine (like my neighbors, ect) but just not my home one. Again, it was working one minute, then simply stopped working and hasn't been able to connect at all.

It is running on windows vista home premium 32 bit sp1, if that matters.I have just had my computer's motherboard changed recently. After reinstalling the wireless adapter, the internet works! Until I found when I came back later that my internet shows unidentified network with limited connectivity. It happened when I was not around and my computer went into hibernate mode after downloading firefox installer. There is no antivirus installed, so it can't be a problem. My wireless adapter is the usb type, brand tplink: TL-WN721N. Tried a few methods suggested by the internet but nothing works: unchecking the iv6 box, follow the steps that starts with the regedit part, uninstall and reinstall the driver for the wireless adapter, fix the ip address. There is no problem with the network as the rest of the computers and laptops in the house has no network issues. But all of them are running on windows 7.

I have a computer running Windows Vista that has been unable to access the internet, either with wireless or cable. It just says that no connections are available.Troubleshoot doesn't detect any problems.I also realized that I cannot access device manager, nor can I add/uninstall anything. When trying to get into device manager, I get " the specified service does not exist as an installed device".

I got a Acer Laptop from my buddy that had windows 7 and when he had it his harddrive had crashed so he put in a older harddrive in it and installed windows Vista. Doing that caused the ethernet and network adapter to not work at all (says it need drivers) and I can't access the internet at all on it. I don't know if I can grab the drivers somewhere else or if I have to just count my losses.

After reinstalling Vista, Vista does not recognize my wireless network. I know that the wireless network is working because my i-Touch and my blue-ray (internet streaming) still are working with the Cisco/Linksys E2000. I made sure that the wireless switch on my Gateway laptop was in the on position. The wireless hardware does not show up in the hardware control panel. Is this a driver issue or a hardware issue? It does not seem that it would be a hardware problem.
My Gateway is still under warranty thru Best Buy. If it's a hardware problem, it's covered but if it's a software problem(I take it that a driver would be software), they want $100 to fix. This is what brings me to a second question, if it's a driver issue, should I just upgrade to Window 7? Does Window 7 have build in drivers for wireless hardware?

I have an Advent Laptop running vista and I have a problem with windows suddenly not being able to find one specific wifi network. I have no problem connecting to my home network, or that of any of my friends networks. However when I go to the holiday park where I have a caravan and go into the owners lounge to use the free wifi windows can't find it. (I used to be able to connect with no problem, it's just that for some reason windows can't find it now). Everybody else in the lounge can connect with no problem. If I use my phone's usb tethering feature I can connect to the wifi network. If go into another part of the complex I can connect to the wifi there with no problem. On the park they operate two networks, one in the owners lounge, the one I can no longer connect to, and one in the cafe/bar which I can connect to.I can only assume that some 'setting' on my laptop has changed and is stopping windows finding the network, but I have no idea what it could be.

I've got a Vista Business PC and a Vista Business Laptop connected via a virgin media router (Netgear CG2100D) and I cannot get the two machines to see each other correctly over the network. The laptop is connected via wireless, whilst the pc is wired. Both are set to recieve their network settings automatically (DHCP) and both have the windows firewall (the only firewall on either) turned off completely.
I can ping each machine fine from one another using the ip addresses, and I can also connect via . However, connections via fail, and I cannot see the machines in the network map.
I have tried turning netBIOS to be "always on" on both adapters, but this makes no difference.
I've been messing around pretty much for 6 hours now and am getting quite fustrated by this! (my original aim was to get media sharing working, but I've pretty much abandoned that for now).
