WS-C3550-12T And WS-C3550-48-EM / Fiber Switch Uplink
Jul 4, 2011
I notice that my Cisco switches have 2 fiber GBIC ports on them each and while i have been around networking for quite some time i have never dug that much into fiber. So after some quick googlefu i learned that there is lots of different types and compatibility problems.
The 2 switches i would like to connect are a WS-C3550-12T and a WS-C3550-48-EM.From what i have read these are 1000-base-fx?

I'm looking to sit the ICND2 exam soon and have discovered that the pair of old 2924XL switches are not going to cut the mustard for the newer vlan commands and other features.
Would a pair of WS-C3550-24-SMI switches be a sensible replacement for ICND2 and possibly up to CCNP? They are available on ebay for about £80 each.

Here iis a diagram of my current lab where I am using IP SLA to automatically switch from ISP 1 to ISP 2 should the connection go down (and vice versa)
My switches are C3550 Layer 3 switches. Both ISP's do work so connectivity is not the problem.
If I shutdown the fa0/19 port on SW1 the SLA kicks in and changes my defualt route out 10.0.1.0 without a problem. And when I do a no shut it comes back to tge 192.168.10.0 netowrk just as we would expect. No problem there.
When I disconnect the ISP 1 cell phone the SLA does switch the defualt route to the 10.0.1.0 netowrk. Okay, just fine so far. Here isthe problem, when i reconnect the cell phone the SLA does not come back to the 192.168.10.0 netowrk without first having to delete the SLA and then recresting it (both switches).

We have two switches; a WS-C3550-48 and a WS-C3548-XL connected via fiber uplink ports. Both switches are on the same subnet 192.168.1.0 /24. I would like to change the subnet of the second switch, WS-C3548-XL, to be on 192.168.2.0 /24. Would it be possible to assign 192.168.2.x IP addresses to both uplink ports to achive this?
Or would I need to create a separate VLAN and assign both GigabitEthernet0/1 uplink ports to this VLAN?

I'm trying to configure my C3550 with fast ethernet port 0/48 assigned to vlan 2 in static access mode and SVI vlan 2 configured as dhcp client.
But I see command ip address dhcp is not available on interface vlan 2:
Cat3550(config-if)#ip ad
Cat3550(config-if)#ip address ?
A.B.C.D IP address
Cat3550(config-if)#ip address
Could it be a problem related to the version running on the equipment (see below the output of sh version command not sure of what EA1 stands for)? I read here [URL] that this command was introduced in version 12.1(2)T
If it is a version problem is there any possibility to download upgraded version for free?

I have a question regarding uplink ports on a switch. Specifically the SFP+ variety. Could these uplink ports be used to connect directly to a fileserver? To be more specific, would the uplink port on the HP 3800 Switches connect directly to a file server that has the SFP+ card installed?

Im now in charge of a medium/big size network (around 1200 machines).I found some connection pattern that im not shoure if it is correct.I migth be wrong, but i think this kind of connection would cause a continue RSTP change of topology (confusing about the 'direction' of the route to take), so having some latency period (this pattern of connection can be repeated several times in the whole network).BTW, there is no special configuration in switch A for saiyng that port 50 is not being used as a uplink port.

At our office we have a weird performance problem with the following switches and connectivity:
Internet |
SG300-24 (L3) core switch (in our server room)
|SG300-10P (L2) access swtich (in our meeting room) |
SG500-28P (L3) switch (in our meeting room)
We are building a new computer infrastructure that is connected to the the SG500-28P. As you can see above the SG500-28P in our meeting room has an uplink to the SG300-10P in the same meeting room. And again the SG300-10P has and uplink to the SG300-24 in our server room. From the server room, there is connectivity to internet. The network uses a multiple VLAN's and routeing between them. Bootom line is, the internet VLAN ID 10 is tagged to trunk ports and available on the SG500-28P. So client get connected straight into the internet based VLAN.
The performance on the SG500-28P switch itself from VLAN to VLAN is very fast. But... the uplink connection tot the internet and other VLAN's on the core switch are very and very slow! At least 10 times slower than normal. So if I plug a laptop in the SG500-28P and go from uplink to uplink, it is slow! But... when I connect the same laptop to the SG300-10P the connection with only one uplink it is fast. As if three switches is to much. I can't figure out why.

I have configured about 20 of these switches now, and notice in the port listings a TE1/1//1 TE1/1/2 and GI1/1/1 GI1/1/2 uplink port. There are only two uplink SFP+ ports. I now have a reason to install with a 1Gb uplink to the Core. I am using a GLC-LH module at each end. I did configure the TE1/1/1 port for the uplink. Does not work though..Do I need to configure the two GI1/1/1 and 1/1/2 ports for uplink, remove the TE configuration for the uplink to work? Using the UNIVERSAL code with a LANBase license.

I was trying to uplink a switch today on a 1500m run of SMF. I have a 6509 core switch with a 16 port GBIC module. On that end I have a WS-G5486-LX with a 3m SC to LC patch cable. On the other end I have a 3750G with a GLC-LH-SM SFP. I have checked my fiber path and it seems good, (by sight, did not have an OTDR avialable).I can't get the link up at all. Tried swapping Tx Rx at one end, Tried different transceivers. Tried different patch cables. Nothing worked. At about the mid-point of my fiber run the cable passes through another network closet with a core switch for a separate network. If I break my fiber path there and try to connect in either direction it works. The only differences are the length of the fiber run and that the core switch on the other network has a CLC-LX-SM SFP.Is it the distance? Or is there some issue connecting a GLC-LH-SM to a WS-G5486-LX?

I am not getting any connectivity to the network with either a straight through or crossover cable. the port remains in amber but a 'show interface' indicates that the interface is up. The core switch is a 6506 and one of the modules is the 48port POE module. The 6506 resides in the main building and we need to interconnect two other annexes to the main building via fibre. is it possible to have just 2 sfp ports on the 48 port module or how to connect the fibre cable to the switch?
Also, if the existent network is made up of Cat5e cables would it be of anyuse to use Cat6 cables for uplink for the switches on each segment to the core switch. I feel basically the Cat5e would nullify the speed of the Cat6 or am i wrong and this would make uplink speed faster.

Cat5e connection to basement HP 1810G-24 switch All of these devices are connected via a single Cat5e cable that was installed when the house was built. I had to re-terminate both ends of it when I moved in because the existing terminations were done very poorly. I have no idea how or where the cable is routed, nor what the quality of this Cat5e cable is. It did pass a test using my cable tester.
This single Cat5e is connected to my main HP switch in the basement equipment rack. Both of these switches have mini-GBIC ports that can utilize SFP transceivers and fiber. I priced out 2 MGBSX1 compatible modules along with a 30M multimode fiber patch 'cable' online at under $150. Although it would require at least a couple hours of work (including digging around in the attic and crawl space and drilling some holes), but running the fiber to the basement is very doable.
My question to my far more experienced forum members is if the performance gains would be worth the effort? My server is in the basement, and despite having an Intel GB NIC in my PC I am seeing read speeds of ~23MBs and writes of ~49MBs to/from my it. My server has teamed GB NICs (802.3ad LACP Layer 2) connected to trunked (LACP) ports on my HP switch.

My question you can not connect a HP switch to a Cisco switch, is this true or do I just need to confirgure something on the ports.
