Cisco WAN :: WS-C3550-24-SMI Suitable For CCNA-CCNP
Jul 4, 2012
I'm looking to sit the ICND2 exam soon and have discovered that the pair of old 2924XL switches are not going to cut the mustard for the newer vlan commands and other features.
Would a pair of WS-C3550-24-SMI switches be a sensible replacement for ICND2 and possibly up to CCNP? They are available on ebay for about £80 each.

I'm reading the CCNA Sec book (554) and I've just finished a few chapters on CCP.Is the tool free? Can it be simulated in PT, or emulated in GNS3? Speaking of which, can the entire CCNA/CCNP Sec track be emulated in GNS3?

I notice that my Cisco switches have 2 fiber GBIC ports on them each and while i have been around networking for quite some time i have never dug that much into fiber. So after some quick googlefu i learned that there is lots of different types and compatibility problems.
The 2 switches i would like to connect are a WS-C3550-12T and a WS-C3550-48-EM.From what i have read these are 1000-base-fx?

I ordered a set of hardware that came with CBT videos; however, the videos they sent do not exactly match the hardware and I'm stumped.
I have 3 routers:
2610XM: Indianapolis
2620:New_England
2610:Seattle
Indianapolis connects to New_England with a WIC-1DSU-T1
Indianapolis connects to Seattle with a WIC-1T
The interfaces are up on all three devices and so are the protocols. The videos are of 2500 series routers and they only use the WIC-1T card. When I try to set the clock rate for the s0/1 on New England to 1000000 like the video suggest I get an error "this command only applies to DCE interfaces". Do I not need to set this on the WIC-1DSU-T1 interface?
Whenever I issue router rip and try to set network such as:
router rip
network 10.0.1.0
network 10.0.10.0
network 10.0.20.0
the network won't save on any of the devices. If I show the running-config it shows network 10.0.0.0 I've tried saving the config directly after exiting outt of the config mode, but still only 10.0.0.0

I'm reading the SWITCH OCG for the second time now, and I noticed page 210 is completely missing: it's a duplicate of page 212. I'm still wondering why I didn't see it the first time I read it.

I am currently working on an example for a CCNP Spanning Tree Protocol example.I have some lectures on video and getting confused with an example they have provided. It has me baffled as I have compared it against numerous other websites, trawled forums and tried to get other examples to compare it against.Anyway, I have posted screenshots of the topology. They are as follows:
1) topology showing links so can assign costs (100mbps = STP cost 19, 1000mbps = STP cost 4)
2) topology show priority and MAC addresses (priority left at default so root bridge elected by lowest MAC address)
3) topology showing elected root ports **which I do not agree with for switches E & F**
4) topology showing subsequent blocked ports **which I do not agree with for switches D & F, even if I accepted the previous given root port election*** I understand for same cost paths to root bridge that lowest bridge ID wins. So here are my queries:
1) switch E has 2 equal cost paths to root bridge (A):
-via: E > D > A (4 + 19)
-via: E > C > A (4 + 19)
so I think pick the next hop switch with lower bridge ID. Switch C right? In this example it says pick port going to switch D. I am confused! Why pick port going toward switch D?
2) switch F has 2 equal cost paths to root bridge (A):
-via: F > C > A (4 + 19)
-via: F > D > A (4 + 19)
so I think pick the next hop switch with lower bridge ID. Switch C right? In this example it says pick port going to switch D. I am confused! Why pick port going toward switch? tell if the example in the diagram (topology 3) is wrong? If it is correct explain why?Now on to issue number 2...If I accept the root port election given in the topology, I go through the process of assigning designated ports and blocked ports.I understand for each link there is at least 1 designated port. If it is a redundant link, one side will be designated, one side blocked. The designated port will be on the side of the lowest bridge ID (priority + MAC address). So here are my queries:
1) there is a redundant link between switch C and switch F
-one side must be designated
-one side must be blocked
-pick the side with lowest bridge ID (priority + MAC address) for designated port
-switch C has same priority as switch F, so based off MAC address, switch C wins i.e. designated port on switch C side, blocked port switch F side.
-In this example it says port from switch C is blocked and port from switch F designated. I am confused! Why pick port going from switch F as designated?
2) there is a redundant link between switch D and switch C
-one side must be designated
-one side must be blocked
-pick the side with lowest bridge ID (priority + MAC address) for designated port
-switch C has same priority as switch D, so based off MAC address, switch C wins i.e. designated port on switch C side, blocked port switch D side.
-In this example it says port from switch C is blocked and port from switch D designated. I am confused! Why pick port going from switch D as designated?

After some searching I see many people using power injectors or switches that supploy PoE. I am building a lab for the CCNA Wireless and currently have an old Cisco 3550 PoE switch and a 2106 Controller that I got at a steal of a price. My question is, The 1142 can use the 15.4 Inline Power from the 3550 even though it is not the 802.11af standard correct? If it doesn't then I will need to order a power brick.

By default, 802/11a/n is set for backhaul communication.Does that mean that if most of my clients are on 5ghz, Mesh network is not a preferred design to go? Reason being:- client communication on a/n radio might disturb the traffic of the whole cell and of all the MAPs that connect to the network through that MAP.

We’re deploying new WIFI towers at several of our vacation resorts and have decided to migrate from Wireless G to Wireless N access points. We currently have the following in each WIFI tower – Hotspot I’ve been researching and speaking to our partner pre-sales team, and have narrowed the choice down to deploying 3 x AIR-AP1261N-x-K9 at each of our towers. I have been unable to find suitable replacements to the 1watt Luxul 2.4ghz amplifiers we’re using, or really good N sector antennas to mount to the top of our masts. The 1260’s are all 802.af, so besides getting power injectors there shouldn’t be to much to think about.

Here iis a diagram of my current lab where I am using IP SLA to automatically switch from ISP 1 to ISP 2 should the connection go down (and vice versa)
My switches are C3550 Layer 3 switches. Both ISP's do work so connectivity is not the problem.
If I shutdown the fa0/19 port on SW1 the SLA kicks in and changes my defualt route out 10.0.1.0 without a problem. And when I do a no shut it comes back to tge 192.168.10.0 netowrk just as we would expect. No problem there.
When I disconnect the ISP 1 cell phone the SLA does switch the defualt route to the 10.0.1.0 netowrk. Okay, just fine so far. Here isthe problem, when i reconnect the cell phone the SLA does not come back to the 192.168.10.0 netowrk without first having to delete the SLA and then recresting it (both switches).

We have two switches; a WS-C3550-48 and a WS-C3548-XL connected via fiber uplink ports. Both switches are on the same subnet 192.168.1.0 /24. I would like to change the subnet of the second switch, WS-C3548-XL, to be on 192.168.2.0 /24. Would it be possible to assign 192.168.2.x IP addresses to both uplink ports to achive this?
Or would I need to create a separate VLAN and assign both GigabitEthernet0/1 uplink ports to this VLAN?

But I see command ip address dhcp is not available on interface vlan 2:

Cat3550(config-if)#ip address ?

Could it be a problem related to the version running on the equipment (see below the output of sh version command not sure of what EA1 stands for)? I read here [URL] that this command was introduced in version 12.1(2)T
If it is a version problem is there any possibility to download upgraded version for free?

The initial authentication succeeds fine and the wireless connection works ok using WPA2+CCKM and LEAP with a Cisco ACS radius server. The problem is that the client does not attempt to preauthenticate with the other AP because the RSN Capabilities IE in the AP beacons and probe responses do not set the RSN Preauthentication capable bit. I can't figure out what it takes to get the APs to indicate to clients that it can do preauthentication. I'm been crawling through all the documentation I can find, to no avail.

We are about to share a 10 MBit ISP connection with 2 others companies, and they are going to split the bill up into 3,3 and 4 Mbit, so we where thinking that we could setup a switch before their and ours router and provide them with a static IP from our ISP. But is it possible to set a bandwidth limit on the ports of a Cisco Catalyst 2960-8TC, so that we can set a limit of 3,3 and 4 on 3 ports.
