Add Wifi Adapter To My Laptop If Internal Is Bad
Nov 26, 2011
The wifi card in my laptop may be bad. I can find a network but cannot connect. It says that signal lost, but source is in same room and works with other laptops. Can I just add a external USB WiFi adapter to bypass my internal one?

I am trying to upgrade some older laptops (about 4 years old or more) WiFi. Most of them have I believe 802.11 b,g cards in them. I would like to upgrade to b,g and n so they will connect to all home networks more easily. I believe most of the b,g and n internal WiFi cards have three wires were all my laptops only have two.

I've been having a problem with my wifi for a month or so. I used to connect well to my wifi, but then one day my laptop just can't connect to it anymore. It says "windows was unable to connect to" or something similar to that. But what's strange is, I have an external wifi adapter (Tenda 802.11n, it looks like an USB flash drive). I use this adapter to connect to Wifi with the very same password, and it can connect perfectly. Signal strength is around the same level.I tried using windows troubleshooter, didn't work. I borrowed my friend's laptop (which is very modern, and have windows 7 - mine has windows XP), but the same problem exists: the laptop can't connect, but the adapter can.I also tried to export the wifi settings to an USB flash drive (using windows 7's function), and installed it on the laptops. Didn't work.
So, I currently have a Toshiba Satellite, L550 Series, and in the new year, my battery started becoming loose in the charging spot, so I turned my computer off for the night to save power, and went out the following day. When I turned my computer back on, it started to say that I had no internet connection available, and when I tried to troubleshoot, instead of working like it normally does, it said I needed to plug in an ethernet cable, which I don't use at all.So, I decided to look around my Network and Connections page, and when I clicked the link called "See Full Map", instead of seeing what I normally see (which is my computer, my brothers computer, and my sisters computer, then the internet router) I only saw a sentence along the lines of "The adapter needs to be plugged in".

My router/modem is at one corner of the house and my computer is supposed to go in the other corner of the house. I am looking to play Battlefield 3, CS:GO, CoD:4, DayZ, and some other online games that require good connection to even do decent. I am going to be downloading different things and uploading videos to YouTube. I need a VERY FAST WiFi adapter that is comparable to wired connection, and remember, my computer will be all the way across the house.

I'm using an Acer Aspire 5532 and just recently set up my own network with my Cisco WRT120N router. I used the installation disc and set up a WPA password, named my router, and my network. For the installation, it seemed I could not even start without physically linking the router to my laptop with the included rollover cable. I finished that, and ever since my wireless adapter has been disabled. Whenever I attempt to enable it, I get an error; my laptop shuts down and I'm presented with blue screen. The only way I've been able to get back to normal is to reboot in safe mode and than do a system restore.

I can connect with my phone and use the browser as usual. On my laptop it won't connect when using windows 7 while in ubuntu it will connect, but with no internet.
How can I get internet on my laptop ? It's a public wifi hotspot. I can connect with no issues at home.
My network adapter is: Atheros AR5B97. And my phone is an iPhone 3G.
The wizard's of no use since it asks me to check the router, which I can't since it's a public hostspot.

So I just got this Etekcity 1000mW 802.11 B/G Long range High Power USB Wireless WiFi Network Adapter with 6dBi Antenna RTL8187L Chipset: Computers & Accessories I installed the driver on my windows XP then restart the computer.. However, when I try connnecting to my network the first thing it does is start connecting... it dosnt ask for the password. After attempting to connect, nothing happens. So, I set up my own network, type in the SSID and type in the password and its confirmation. It still wont connect I tried re-installing and repairing and nothing will happen..So I test it on my macbook pro and everything works fine.PS my windows XP cannot get internet at all so I cant download anything nor do I have a USB?

I'm using a XP sp3 machine,dial-up. Was hoping to get connected to open/allowed wifi connection. Did some research, and a ALFA AWUS036h USB adapter looked like the one, good reviews. When I first plugged in and loaded software, it worked great as far as seeing 10-12 connections, and even showed as connected with strong signal on one open/allowed connection, but wasn't connected.Seems like the software doesn't run good, worked at first and I had netstumbler installed and 8-10 stations were showing there also, but after a reboot had no stations on mfg software, none on netstumbler, and never would show stations on XP Zero config., seemes the software got screwy after reboot.

i recently bought a wifi adapter capable of 300mbps, as apposed to my old 54mbps adapter, and an active 10m extension.
now the extension does power the adapter, but the cpu doesnt seem to recognize the adapter is plugged in, but if i plug the adapter straight into the computer then it all works fine.
other people seem to have no problem at all doing this to achieve better signal.

I'm part of a Tech Support department of 50 located along the Gulf Coast. In years past we have found hurricanes and other disasters may have forced Engineers to work from home or out of hotel rooms for several weeks. Since that time we are now using VoIP phones that require a power over Ethernet (PoE) LAN connection. Along with the phone we already have an external power brick that we can take home that supplies the PoE LAN connection. However, that requires that you have access to the router so you can run a physical cable from the router to the power brick.
That's fine when you are at your own house and have access to your own router. But in the case of a hotel, you can't run a cable to the router. Many hotels have gone to wireless only and don't have a physical LAN jack to plug into. So I've been looking at something like the Netgear WNCE3001 Dual-Band Internet Adapter. That will supply a physical LAN connection from WiFi only. But it does not have PoE. So now if we are going to work from a hotel room, we need the VoIp phone, the power brick and the WiFi Internet adapter. 3 seperate items to lug around.
Is there such a device that would allow you to pickup a WiFi signal in a hotel room and has a physical LAN jack that is also capable of PoE? I could at least lose the power brick then.

I have this USB Wifi adapter: NETGEAR WNA3100 I just bought it and thought it would work, but apparently it is def a Windows 7 problem because I have tried it with these others USB adapters only. My main objective is to create a hotspot for the house wirefree and no triping etc etc
Airlink+ 802.11g 2.0 (old) Works with XP but not on W7 (blinks)
WifiMAX Dongle 802.11g 2.0 (also old) (Sometimes blinks at intervals)
TrendNET TEW-644UB (bought last year) (Light stays on/no longer blinks)
Netgear WNA3100 (arrived just a few hours ago) (I made it blink now with its software)
I have tried(netgear):
-rebooting
-installing/uninstalling drivers
-uninstalling itunes
-Using a W8 procedure for it
-tried using different software
-Some other stuff
I have not tried a HKEY codes for it My biggest problem is that the "Disabled" status is stuck and I cannot re-enable it. If there is a way to override this I would be happy to hear it. Using: Windows7 Ultimate Gigabyte Motherboard/AMD chipset For the only one that is enabled(Airlink) it has some funny stuff on the status like 412 Gbps and doesn't have ipv4/6 connectivity
