I have a desktop computer that connects to the Internet with a modem. I just bought a new computer that I want to use in a different room in my house. Can I use a Wi-Fi USB adapter to access the Internet on my new computer?

In years past we have found hurricanes and other disasters may have forced Engineers to work from home or out of hotel rooms for several weeks. Since that time we are now using VoIP phones that require a power over Ethernet (PoE) LAN connection. Along with the phone we already have an external power brick that we can take home that supplies the PoE LAN connection. However, that requires that you have access to the router so you can run a physical cable from the router to the power brick.
That's fine when you are at your own house and have access to your own router. But in the case of a hotel, you can't run a cable to the router. Many hotels have gone to wireless only and don't have a physical LAN jack to plug into. So I've been looking at something like the Netgear WNCE3001 Dual-Band Internet Adapter. That will supply a physical LAN connection from WiFi only. But it does not have PoE. So now if we are going to work from a hotel room, we need the VoIp phone, the power brick and the WiFi Internet adapter. 3 seperate items to lug around.
Is there such a device that would allow you to pickup a WiFi signal in a hotel room and has a physical LAN jack that is also capable of PoE? I could at least lose the power brick then.

I don't use the server but once a month anymore because there is some old software that I need to keep on it. I also don't want to use the server for internet access anymore. I just use a wireless adapter on the client machine for internet connection. My problem is that I can either use my wireless adaptor for internet access or connect to my server. I can't do both at the same time (I get the "multiple networks red x") and no internet access.

Had problems getting "limited connectivity etc" messages 'cos wasn't getting IP address allocated. Have now manually allocated IP address and connection status is now "Connected" (with no warning about limited connectivity etc). However I can't connect to the internet.

It's great, but I ordered a rosewill wireless adapter for it and noticed that my connection strength and speed are both pretty terrible. I went on amazon and bought a TP-Link wireless adapter(TL-WN822N). I installed the most recent "V2" drivers from their website and upon disabling my rosewill adapter and enabling the new TP-Link adapter, I was able to connect to the network, but not access the internet. I have tried power cycling the router, using the reset switch on the router, restarting my computer, and a bunch of commands that I found on this site. Is it possible that I have a defective adapter?
Also, some more information: My isp is comcast and the router is from them as well. Here is my ipconfig /all log for the rosewill adapter(internet access):

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Dell Inspiron 560. I am using a DI-524 D-Link wireless router. I have an Acer Aspire One Net Book running Windows XP Home it is equipped with an internal wireless network adapter. I can connect/communicate with router and access the internet with no problems whatever. However, when I connect an external wireless network adapter e.g. Alpha AWUS036H I cannot get a connection when I disable my internal network adapter. I have also tried the Trendnet TEW-424UB USB external wireless network adapter and the symptoms are exactly the same.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Netgear DGN2000 router wired to a desktop machine running windows 7. In another room i have another desktop machine running windows XP. I have a netgear WN111v2 network adapter connected to this machine. The network adapter says it is connect to the router, the icon in the bottom right hand corner is green and the signal strength is in high 90%s, yet when i start up internet explorer the message i get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
Also, in the house there is a laptop running windows 7 (connected wirelessly - no problems) another laptop running windows xp (connected - no problems) and an Xbox 360 (connected ok). Been on to netgear tech support all they could suggest was to lower the security settings on the router, ultimately lowered down to disabled - still nothing. Disabled homegroup on the windows 7 machine still nothing running out of ideas now.
I've been following those instructions to set a dir-615 as a wifi access point connected to a switch : [URL]. I am now able to connect to the 615 either by wifi or by typing it's ip address with another computer connected to the LAN. Connecting to the 615 by wifi, i can do a ping request to urls or receive and send mail with my e-mail client but i can't access websites using my browser.s it possible to get it working without installing some kind of modified firmware? I tried plugging the Internet ethernet cable in the LAN and Internet ports of the 615, none works.

I have deleted mcafee, norton, photoshop, applications etc. I have restored the system to a previous date. I have disabled firewalls and antiviruses. I have an Acer Aspire with Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter. I only have wireless as I am sharing my internet and therefore can't test it with an Ethernet cable. I cannot switch on and off the modem box either. I have this limited access which disappears by itself after a few minutes. Then it comes back again. I disable the wireless and enable it again which solves the problem for only a few minutes. I have checked my ip which is 192.168.1.20 with submask of 255 something - which I don't think is the problem.At last, I have switched to Safe mode with Networking but even in this mode I still have limited access. The internet connection keeps cutting off and on all the time.

The icon doesn't also have that blue light that I think is an indication that it has internet connection. My roommate can connect to this wifi with no problems, her notebook is Acer, just like mine. My laptop refuses to access the internet though the WiFi signal is strong (my Android phone connects instantly). I am currently in a hotel so cannot mess with the router (as advised by Windows help!). I have a similar problem in one airport lounge but generally it's fine, and at home I have no problem at all. I have a couple of computers in my house that work fine with my wireless router, but all of a sudden, my roommate's computer, a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7, is connection to the wireless network but has "no internet access." I've rebooted th.e modem and router, to no avail. I've also tried a number of suggestions online, but without success. My friend's computer has McAfee, with which I'm unfamiliar. The only real difference I cn see between our computers is that she has a different wireless card.

The room we work in is able to access the Public Wifi but only half of the room has a good connection. I went to the local computer store and purchased a Belkin Dual-band wireless Range Extender and got it all set up, now I have the Public Wifi Extention access and it will connect to it but it has no internet access. Now we have no access to the administor or the network from our facility. How do i get internet access thru this range extender?
