Extend Wifi Range Of Router Via Cat5 Cabling?

Aug 9, 2012

Our wireless router is in a room at one end of the house (beside the telephone point) from which ethernet cables can connect to the Cat5 sockets taking the broadband to the other rooms that have a Cat5 socket. That is fine for connecting devices to the sockets in the other rooms but because the house is old with thick walls our wifi signal fades to nothing in some parts of the house. Moving the wireless router only moves the problem to another area. I thought about a wifi repeater but the room I would like to locate it in to then boost the signal to the rest of the house is borderline on the range for the wireless router. Is it possible to connect another wireless router or device to the main wireless router through the Cat5 cabling so that the second router/device can offer wifi to that area of the house?

Cabling / Cards :: CAT5 Ethernet Cables Not Working

Jul 14, 2011

I live in a frat and I am currently researching how to design and configure the most efficient network for the house. However, one of the other big problems we have is connectivity of our ethernet cables. We have an IT room with 2 switches that feed ethernet cables to all parts of the house and connect to an ethernet box in the wall where we can simply wire in our internet connection. We have wireless routers too but to keep the bandwidth usage across the WAP's I want to let people use the wired connections. However, many of the connection in the house do not work at all. I plug in my laptop to the wall jack and it gives me the No Internet Access notice. I don't understand why it works in some rooms and not others. All jacks seem to go into the same switches at the other end so I cannot figure out what the problem could be.

Cabling / Cards :: Cat5 Not Working Past 25Ft

May 22, 2012

We are setting up a network in our new house. We have the internet entering the garage. From there we have a 60 ft Cat 5 cables run through the crawl space. Orginally we had the wireless router attached to the end of the cat 5 and then attached to the computer. We could not get a connection through this wire. We then took out the cable, and ran a new one, same issue. We took the same cable, cut it down to 25 feet, installed the router in the garage and we have an excellant connection. We then ran a new wire through the crawl space from the router. Same issue, no connectivity. Taking that cable out, cutting it down we ran the wires from the router to our computers in the garage. why a Cat5 cable would not work at 60Ft.?

I have two spare routers i'm not using, one is a Speedtouch ST585 v6 and the other is a Belkin F5D7632-4 and was wondering if I could use these to extend the range of the home hub wirelessly. As far as I can tell I cannot install dd-wrt on any of these 3.

One desktop computer will stay wired to the 2Wire and laptop or 2 will connect to the WRT54GL since the 2Wire cannot reach into the yard (metal buiding). I've seen several examples of connecting two WRT54G together.  I Can I do that well with std Linksys software or would I be better off downloading Tomato or DD-WRT third party?

Use Laptop To Extend Wireless Range?

I have a couple of computers that are out of range of my router so I came up with a unique solution. I have an old laptop with 2 wireless cards that I put halfway between. It is working but I have a few oddities. First of all, the out of range computer is connected to another wireless router that several laptops and another (wired) PC connect to. It has ICS (Windows XP internet connect sharing) enabled. This rules out using ICS on the laptop as 2 pc's would have the address of 192.168.0.1.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Can Use One To Extend Wireless Range

Jun 4, 2010

I get 10% signal in my bedroom using WEP2 and I would like to boost this to at least 50%

1) I have 2 DIR-655 Wireless N routers, both functional.
2) The first router is on the other side of the house from my room
3) The second router is not in use at all ... I'd like to take advantage of it
4) I have an Ethernet drop in my bedroom that runs under the house to the first router. I have a switch on that drop and use it for my Sony / Netflix box ...

I have been told that the DIR-655 cannot be used as a repeater. Can I not take advantage of the 2nd router to boost my signal in any way?

Cisco Wireless :: Wirelessly Extend Range Of WRVS4400N?

Oct 31, 2009

I have a WRVS4400N v2 acting as a gateway connected to a cable modem and am interested in extending it's range by placing a WAP4410N elsewhere in the building to cover a deadspot.  Is there a mode on the WAP to best achieve this (e.g., wireless repeater, bridge, etc.)?  I had assumed that it would be the wireless client/repeater mode, but the thread below leads me to believe otherwise, but is not labeled as resolved.

[URL]

As a different approach, could I extend the range of the original gateway WRVS4400N by dropping a second WRVS4400N in the deadspot and setting it to router mode?  Language in the WRVS4400N v2 administrator screens lead me to believe that I could try this but I am unclear as to whether it would work wirelessly or need to be connected to the gateway via an ethernet cable, which is what I am trying to avoid.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Connect Two Routers To Extend Wireless Range?

May 15, 2011

I have two Dir-655's - router1 and router2.

Router1:
ip 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP enabled range = 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200
Router 2:
ip 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP disabled

Routers are connected to each other via LAN ports with a switch in between. Both routers have the same wireless SSID with the same password. I am able to connect wirelessly to both routers no problem.

I have a machine running a shared iTunes library which has a wired connection to router1. I also have an Apple TV wired to router2. My issue is if I am connected wirelessly to router2 I may or may not be able to connect to iTunes library. Conversely, if I am connected wirelessly to router1 I may or may not be able to play content from iTunes to Apple TV. I cannot figure out why everything works fine sometimes yet at other times I cannot connect devices between the two routers.

Linksys Cable / DSL :: WAG160N No Longer Use And Would Like To Extend Wireless Range

Feb 22, 2011

I have a WRP400 connected to the internet, and have a WAG160N that I no longer use and would like to to extend my wireless range.I connected them via an Ethernet cable and it seems to work fine without configuring the WAG160N (seemed to just work automatically), but I can't access the WAG160N admin GUI (tried all sorts of IPs in the WRP400 range) to change any settings (frustrating). My guess is that it's probably not the best way to set it up.

1. Set the IP of the WAG160N (The WRP400 is set to 192.168.15.1, so should I change the WAG160N to 192.168.15.2. Or should I be setting it within the WRP400's DHCP range which starts at 192.168.15.100?)

2. Swtich off the DHCP on the WAG160N. (I think I tried this late last night and it wouldn't assign an IP to my laptop, unless I did somehting wrong)

3. Connect the two using a ethernet cable.

After I do this I should still be able to access the WAG160N's admin GUI with the IP assigned in step 1?

Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt54gs - Extend Wifi / Configure Devices For Ssid

Feb 16, 2012

I have two WRT54GS routers. I want to extend my WiFi from the router connected to my upstream in the office to a second router in the living room. I want devices configured for the SSID and passphrase of my current WiFi (which is find in the office) to work seamlessly in the living room. I understand I can do this by running a cable and configuring router 2 as a client of router 1 with router 2 exposing the same SSID and passthrase on a different channel.

But I really don't want to run a cable. There is a point where a client can see router 1 where an AP would cover the living room.

Can I put router 2 at that point, have it connect wirelessly as a client to router 1, and have it expose as an AP using the same SSID and passphrase? Can this be done without wiring the router?

Extending Wifi Range Using Another Router Mn-700?

Mar 22, 2012

I want to share my pc's wifi connection with a neighbor across the street. But i have been un-able to confirm that it can reach the net. With the configs i have tried.I have cloned the mac addy for the wifiAP i have shared. This should be enough. And i should be able to walk it across the street and have it act as the same wifiAP. And he should have the net, via my pc. I tried to use another wifi device to connect to the shared IP...And the router itself...But there was no internet. have tried to configure this router to work as a repeater as well using it's setup. This resulted in no internet connectivity over lan, and no wifi service listing. These is no way for me to tell it which router or device it should be repeating from...

I have tried manually configureing the mn-700 To use the same ip the other router does for it's services. The mn-700 doesn't keep the settings. When it does there is no internet or wifi services. When i have it setup on it's own, no config changes...It'll connect over wifi to the router but there is no net. I can connect a lan wire going to the other router and renew it's lease. This will give the mn-700 an ip addy as if it were another pc. It uses this as it's WAN config
