DELL 2816 - Benefit Of Setting Up VLANs If Subnets Wired Separately
Jun 12, 2013
I have 2 sub nets within my office: 172.16.1.0/24 and 172.16.2.0/24. All devices on each subnet are wired independently from each other into the server closet. Previously each sub net had it's own switch in the closet to connect to that sub nets servers. We are replacing the 2 switches with a single Dell 2816 managed switch.
Is there a benefit to setting up the switch with 2 VLANs over just letting everything pass through the switch in un managed mode?
My only security concern is this: 1 sub net has access to the internet while the other does not. Does setting up 2 VLANs provide additional security by preventing 1 subnet from accessing the other? In other words, if a computer with internet access gets hacked will it being on one side of a VLAN prevent the hacker from accessing the other subnet?

You have to make 4 subnets for 4 VLANs, the router interface assigned to each VLAN is the LAST usable host on the subnet.so unless I'm really bad at networking the graph should be:
NET ID // HOSTS // BROADCAST ADDRESS // VLAN
192.168.0.0 // 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.62 // 192.168.0.63 // VLAN1
192.168.0.64 // 192.168.0.65 - 192.168.0.126 // 192.168.0.127 // VLAN2
192.168.0.128 // 192.168.0.129 - 192.168.0.190 // 192.168.0.191 // VLAN3
192.168.0.192 // 192.168.0.193 - 192.168.0.254 // 192.168.0.255 // VLAN4
So if I'd have to write down a single host configuration for VLAN2..I think it should be:
IP: 192.168.0.65
subnet mask: 255.255.255.192
default gateway: 192.168.0.126
Is this correct? I'm not sure whether the default gateway should be 192.168.0.255 (as would with normal subnets) or as I wrote down 192.168.0.126, this is the first time i've ever gotten assignments including VLANs and I havn't really gotten a solid explanation.

I have a pair of Core VSS 6509E SUP 2T. Two different LANs, two diff. Subnets. larger LAN has been connected to the VSS pair usng normal SVI and Post-Channles (has lots of closets 3750 stacks) and no problem. Second LAN, two closets, stacked and connected to each other via Port channel and trunk + SVI interfaces. Now, I have SVI interfaces for both LANs on teh VSS pair and that is causing traffic from one LAN to jump over to the other VLAN and rightly so because the VSS pair see both subnets as directly connected subnets. I was wondring if I delete the SVI for the second LAN and only keep the L2 VLAN this will be resolved> The reason for the second LAN to connect to the VSs pair is only that It has to go through the VSS pair to get to the WAN router (both LANs will go out through this Same WAN router) but WAN router is not my concern at this time. I need to isolate these two LANs/subnets traffic so no one VLAM traffic jumps over the other.I have also thought about VRF but at this point I am not sure if teh 3750 stacks supports VRF and if it does how to implement VRF on the second and samller LAN to just allow it go through the VSS pair in order to get to the WAn router.

The ASA device is going to be the gateway for multiple distinct inside IP subnets. We can have have a unique outside IP address to correspond to each inside IP subnet if needed, but we need some means for a VPN client or a site-to-site VPN to have acess to a pre-definied IP subnet (i.e. if customer A establishes a VPN connection, they have connectivity to IP subnet X; customer B establishes a VPN connection, they have connectivity to IP subnet Y, etc.).Currently, the two inside IP subnets are 10.10.0.0/16 and 10.20.0.0/16. We will be adding more. The problem we are facing is that we cannot reach the VLAN 201 from the ASA we believe this is because. I have setup two addresses on port 0/1 Vlan1, 10.10.20.2 and 10.20.20.1 as an alias. How can we make traffic for the 10.10.0.0/16 subnet untagged and traffic for the 10.20.0.0/16 subnet tagged for VLAN 201.

I am setting up my home lab to practice and play around.I have VMWARE ESXi environment with two workstations as my servers.I would like to setup two domains with two domain controllers but i want each domain to have its own subnet. So this is my setup. I have Cable modem from cablevision , thay connects to my router which is Apple Airport which acts as the DHCP server. DNS server and default gateway. The network on the router is 10.0.1.xThen i have two switches . One is a 5 port unmanaged switch that connects to the three physical desktops .Then i have a Cisco small business switch SG200-08 that connects to my ESX servers and NAS. Now currently all is good and working but like i said all my machines physical or virtual get an IP that is 10.0.1.x and they get all this from the router. And i think i can setup two domains with two domain controllers without an issue and they will all get an IP address of 10.0.1.x. This is all good but i want to have one domain on one subnet and other on another so for example one domain will have 10.0.1.x and other 10.0.2.x. I am just not sure what i need to to get this setup like this. I know my SG200-08 supports vlans and i am pretty sure on the apple router you can only have one subnet i think. So can i do this with my current setup by setting up a DHCP server with two scopes ?

With traditional classful subnetting, the same number of host bits is used to designate the subnet ID for all the resulting subnetworks. This type of subnetting always results in a fixed number of subnets and a fixed number of hosts per subnet. For this reason, this is known as fixed-length subnetting. The decision about how many host bits to use for the subnet ID is a big planning decision. There are two considerations when planning subnets: the number of hosts on each network, and the number of individual local networks needed. The table for the subnet possibilities for the 192.168.1.0 network shows how the selection of a number of bits for the subnet ID affects both the number of possible subnets and the number of hosts that can be in each subnet. One thing to keep in mind is that in all IPv4 networks, two host addresses are reserved: the all-0s and the all-1s. An address with all 0s in the host portion of the address is an invalid host address and usually refers to the entire network or subnetwork. An address with all 1s in the host portion is used as the local network broadcast address. When a network is subnetted, each subnet contains an all-0s and an all-1s host address that cannot be used for individual host addresses.

Small office, 2 RV042, 2 DSL connections. 1 is used striclty for the business side, and the other is for our CCTV network. They also have seperate DSL connections as we have 2 external IP address for clients to connect remotely. We don't want to take away our exisring setup, but would like to bridge both networks so a few of our internal clients can connect to our CCTV network and use some of the devices. Right now they come in on VPN but its not as fast.Is this doable without adding additional hardware? Both networks need DHCP enable as well.

I have a static DSL connection and my ISP is giving me 4 static IP's. I have connected my RV042 to the DSL modem and I have now 1 subnet at 192.168.0.0. What I want to create is a WEB server/ Email server, but to sit on a different subnet - 192.168.5.0. For now I have connected the server to the DMZ port, but I am unable to to access it from WAN, only from LAN. how to configure properly the 2 subnets (192.168.0.0 and 192.168.5.0) and how to forward my static address to the server which I which to be on the 192.168.5.0.

I have:
-Procurve 1810-24G
-Procurve 2520-8-PoE
Router (with Internet Connection) is plugged into port 24 of the 1810.My asterisk server is plugged into Port 1 of the 1810.The 2520 is plugged into Port 2 of the 1810, and all of the VoIP phones are plugged into the 2520.Rest of the office computers are plugged into the remaining ports on the 1810.
After setting up the subnet and assigning an ip to the 1810, everything else just worked out of the box. I would imagine that I should segment and prioritize the network so that the VOIP traffic is isolated and is higher priority from everything else.
I tried playing around a bit, but the phones lost connectivity, so I just defaulted everything back for now.
What would the suggestions be for setting up the VLANS properly to do this?I would also need one of the office PC's (say the one plugged into port 13 of the 1810) to be able to access the asterisk server. Also, would it be more optimal to have the asterisk server on the PoE switch or the main switch?

How to setup 3 SG300-52 (in L2 mode) as per this diagram:Port 1 on all switches should be able to talk to each other and access the blob at the right. The ports 25 on the other hand should only be able to talk among themselves in their own private vlan. They are to carry sensitive traffic. So I created 3 vlans, vlan 78 for ports gi1, gi51 and vlan 10 for port25,49,50 and a dummy vlan: 666 with the intent of segratating vlan 10 from vlan 78. My attempts so far have failed. ports gi49-50 are configured as trunk ports and gi1,gi51 as access ports as the following cli output (excerpts of the startup config):
vlan database
vlan 10,78,666
exit
interface vlan 1
ip address 172.16.10.11 255.255.255.0
[code]....
Ports gi1 can talk to each other and access the blob but ports 25 refuse to talk to each other. But as soon as I remove the access links to the blob they can! Obviously, at that point port gi1 lose access. Is such a topology feasable or even advisable?

I am trying to setup a RV180 and 3 wireless access points. I want the AP's to have 2 ssids that are isolated from each other. IE guest network and main network. I have setup VLAN's and my AP's support 802.1q and have ssid's with matching VID's. I was able to get this to work basically, but things seem to have gotten confusing when I plug the AP's into a POE switch instead of directly into the rv180. At this point I'm not sure exactly waht to ask. Maybe start by providing basic info on how I'm supposed to do this. I was under the impression that since both devices support 802.1q I could configure the VLANs on the router, and tell the AP's to apply a VID to the SSID and thing would work. This isn't the case unfortunately.

I live in a two family residential house and we share a common fibre connection to the internet. In the basement we have a modem/router(zyxel) which is in "bridge mode". Therefore not acting as DHCP. Behind this zyxel we have a Cisco RVS4000 router. Ports 1 and 2 go to family A, and Ports 3 and 4 go to family B. Family A and B have separate routers which are both set to "access point mode". Family A has an ASUS RT-N66U router while family B has a dlink DIR-615. The asus has an "access point mode" while the dlink needs to be set up manually to achieve this. The dlink must also have a static IP adress. The asus can receive ip adress.
What I have unsuccessfully tried to achieve and am currently trying to separate the networks so that both families can access internett, but at the same time it must be impossible to access VLAN1(Family A) from VLAN2(Family B) vice versa. Meaning no communication between the two families through the local network.
I have tried different options but I am not sure how to deal with trunk, tagged, untagged etc. etc. etc. It seems every time I manage to create two different networks there is still accessability/communication between the two VLANs and everytime I manage to give out different IP adresses to different ports i.e. 192.168.10.xx and 192.168.2.xx it is still possible to communicate. What also usually happens is that the internetconnection is severed at the same time.

I have recently purchased 2 SG 300 switches, 1 x SG 300 52 & 1 x SG 300 10, and I am hoping getting the following set-up working. To assist I have drawn the following simple network diagram (below) which hopefully makes it a little clearer what I am trying to do:I have 2 companies occupying a single office with the requirement to share printers/devices etc... so basically I am looking to set-up 2 VLANS (say VLAN 10 & VLAN 20) with inter-vlan routing. To add a little complexity the main comms area is located in the basement of the building, this houses the 2 DSL routers and 2 Servers, one for each company. I am proposing putting the SG 300 10 port switch in here and then use the 3 uplinks I have been given to connect back to the SG 300 52 which is in a patch cabinent 2 floors up. I want to use 2 uplinks (in a LAG) for Company A and 1 uplink for Company B. FYI. DHCP is being served out by each respective router.

Sometimes my wifi signal will randomly drop and I cannot browse the Internet. The network still appears on my computer and I can connect to it, however Internet pages will not load. This lasts for hours, sometimes days. If I unplug the modem from the router and connect directly to the modem via Ethernet, everything works fine! I have tried unplugging everything for 1 minute then plugging it back in and it does nothing.

I am trying to configure my RVS4000 to create my church's small network. I want to connect my internet DSL router on the WAN port and also segment my network with VLANs on the 4 LAN ports. I have port 4 connected to a wireless access point which is in VLAN1 for an open wireless network for any church member to access the internet through. I have a church server, printer and second access point on ports 1-3 in VLAN 34. All ports are untagged. I want the devices on VLAN34 which need confidentiality to be secure from the devices connecting to the internet from VLAN1 for open access but both VLANs need access to the internet..
My open wireless AP in VLAN1 has access to the internet on the WAN port.None of my devices in VLAN34 have access to the internet. I have tried using inter-VLAN routing but that made operation worse so I disabled it.

I purchased a wireless bridge D-Link DAP-1522 (IP fix 192.168.0.50) to share the Internet connection to two remote devices: WD TV Live HD (IP fix 192.168.0.52) and a Samsung BD P2500 player (IP fix 192.168.0.51: to try the BD-Live) but when I plug it into my network I have an IP conflict and I can not navigate anywhere, even by the computer which control the Netgear router (IP 192.168.0.1 DHCP range 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.49).
I tried with all fixed IP (192.168.0.xxx Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.0.1 DNS 192.168.0.1), but nothing to do, I have the same problem: after a few minutes after plugged the network cable into BD player the network falls. With wired connection (10 m of patch cable!!!) Samsung BD P2500 have no problem (DHCP and IP fix).
Then look closely in the information relating to devices connected to the Netgear router I noticed that all devices connected through the bridge DAP-1522 have the different IP but same MAC address and I think this could be the cause of the problem that creates the Blu Ray when it's connected to the network through the bridge, because he is not identified with any name but only as UNKNOWN as the bridge (a problem that WD Live not seen: same MAC address but is identified by name as WDTVLIVE).
How can I make the MAC addresses from the bridge will be recognized separately from my router/modem Netgear? In the settings of the bridge I noticed that you can enable or disable MAC address cloning, but if the off I would expect that cloning was not done and instead all the devices are identified by the Netgear router with the MAC address of the access bridge. The DAP-1522 masked the MAC address of device that are plugged into bridge. The router has the latest available firm while the original bridge has version 1.20 (the penultimate version available).

I have a Dell Server on the way to me, a T110 to be specific. It will have win server 2008 R2 on it. I ordered it to come with Dual NIC cards. To be specific it is 1 card that has two rj-45 ports on it. My question is, what is the benefit of dual ports? I have heard of teaming but don't really know if that applies. I will be using this server for our company website and to facilitate local office backups as well as backing up our regional offices to it. I could see that it would benefit local LAN traffic speed, but outside of the LAN would it still benefit the speed of incoming connections from branch offices running backups?

I was told that i needed to change mx records for email to 166.5.5.6 and then forward nat on that address to the barracuda. I dont really want to change mx records for 10-12 email domains.

I have been having some issues connecting my PC to my XBox360 using the wired approach, it seems to be massively temperamental to a point i decided to not connect the XBox via my router and instead put it straight into my spare network port on my PC. The basic jist of mynetwork confirguration is something like this: Internet cable > Virgin Media 256 Modem > Linksys BEFSR41 Router > PC. I had no issues with this setup, but as soon as i wanted to add my XBox into the mix, things got tricky. I plugged the network cable from my Xbox originally into one of the ports on my router and then went through the settings on both my Xbox and router. Again, i had absolutely no confidence in doing this myself since i don't mess with it, but after reading guides i finally got it sorted. Well, partly sorted. I was able to connect to my Xbox Live, however i was unable to connect to my Xbox to my PC (To stream files onto the Xbox). This was what i wanted to do, i didn't really want to use the Live anyway. So i went off to work again. In the end nothing was working, so i opted to connect my Xbox directly into my PC - So it was no longer connected through my router. I could SEE my PC on my Xbox, but i was unable to connect to it to stream anything. I then opted to disconnect my router (For no other reason than to rule it out) - Sure enough, the very second i disconnected the router, i was able to instantly connect to my PC and was streaming straight away. Once i was streaming, i was able to reconnect my router and that was that. But if i turned off my Xbox i would need to also turn off my router the next time i wanted to stream. How can i fix this so i don't have to continually turn off my router, is there a setting somewhere in the options on my router which can allow me to connect to my Xbox? I managed on my own to figure out how to Telnet in, activate the web control panel, and then access that via the web. Now here is what I am trying to do, it is not that complicated. We have a FIOS connection with 5 IPS: FIOS comes in as Ethernet, without DHCP.
What I want to Assign to Ports on the Switch:
1) Uplink to FIOS
2) VOIP PBX
3) Point of Sale System
4) Internal Network
5) Public Wifi
6-8: Not in use
Each of the above 2-5 will have a router connected to the switch port, each is a separate segregated network, with its Own public IP.
I want to configure the switch to prioritize traffic in the following manner:
Port 2: VOIP: Always gets TOP priority, then Port 3: PoS (but not that important), then port 4: internal (less important), then port 5: public wifi (least important).
