I have a Thompson 784 router that connects to the Internet. It works nicely enough.What is wrong is that I have a shielded Cat 5e cable that goes from my room to the router that's in a another room (~30 metres). Both ends are the same; both ends are done nicely; I've tested it with a cable tester and every wire connects. However, when i connect my computer to my router neither one will find the other.

I have noticed that when I plug the Ethernet cable from the router to the computer the led on the back of the computer panel does not blink as it does when I route directly from he cable modem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI Just switched from DSL to Charter Communications Cable internet. For some reason my computer wont see the internet. I plug the same cord into my brothers computer and the internet works just fine. I plug the same cord back into the DSL and i have internet. I have done troubleshooting and it finds this problem (Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding. I switched to a different cable modem same exact situation. Works on my brothers but not mine. My computer is a much newer and more capable computer then his. When we activated the internet we did it on his computer, but before we switched to charter i plugged the modem in without internet and it seemed to have the same problem. I just got more results on his as it immediately directed my to the charter page at that time. On mine i got nothing. ( Also i believe my brother said that it did work on my computer for a few minutes at first but i'm not 100% on that.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new router (ASUS RT-N10)and It is asking me to direct connect my cable modem to my computer, and then find my MAC address via command prompt, and clone it to the new router.I can get to my command prompt, the problem lies in windows 7 and vista's (or mine) inability to realize that my network card is directly connecting to the modem. (No internet connection available, doesn't think anything is connected). I have tried on multiple machines to try and find my modem's mac address but it simply is not working.I want to know if I can find the mac address through the old router, or what I need to do to have windows 7 recognize I'm directly connecting the modem to the PC.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have only one computer right now.Had two, and got very weak signal to laptop (since discarded) upstairs from Linksys g 54Mbits downstairs at main desktop computer desktop.I have tried three different kinds of 54Mbits wifi routers, all with no success.I'm going to get my wife a new wifi laptop for Christmas, and she wants to be able to use it all over the house.The 54Mbits will cover the downstairs, but, based on previous efforts, I am thinking of putting my modem in the garage, where the cable enters my house, and using a splitter on the cable coming out of the modem to make two IN cables, using one cable for my comp and a 54Mbits router (for downstairs coverage), and putting a second wifi router on the end of the upstairs cable, to cover the upstairs rooms.My house has cable outlets in every room, so I won't have to do any wiring.
I plan to leave the routers on all the time (at this time) subject to how much of a bandwidth drop they cause. I have a 100 Mbps connection, and I play games, so I'd like to retain as much bandwidth as possible. I assume the two "on" wifi routers will pull zero bandwidth as long as the laptop is off. (??)Or maybe I should just try an "n" wifi router, since they get twice the distance, and forget the cable splitter idea.

I don't have any problem to connect to internet but when I want to connect to my work via VPN I can connect with only one of them If I want to connect with another computer I have to reset router and then connect. after each reset I can connect to VPN with only the first computer which have connected to the VPN and even if I turn off the first computer and turn router off and on again, still two other computers are unable to connect to VPN until I reset the router then again only the first computer which connects to VPN (no matter which of three PCs) is the only one which can connect to vpn. So, in my office i have a jack with a cat5e cable that goes to my router. The issue is that the router's internet light won't turn on.We're on our third router and second brand so I'm pretty sure the router's aren't the problem. If i connect my computer to the same cat5 cable I get the internet without an issue. But, when i put my router in there, it gets nothing. Not even a yellow light.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo i have the Dir-615 and two laptops. Both laptops have windows 7, one with 32 bit and the other with 64 bit. I have had my network setup for months. The 32 bit laptop and my 360 are on the network; the 360 is on a wired connection. I recently purchased the 64 bit laptop and am having problems getting it to connect to the Internet. If I hard wire it in through the modem it will connect. If I try to connect to an unsecured network in my area, I can connect. But for some reason I'm unable to connect through my router. Weather I try and connect wireless or through a cable on the ports on the back. If I try and run the network connection wizard it won't fix the problem. I've tried to unplug the router, reconnect and nothing works. The weird part is that i can connect to the router, but can't access either the settings for the router or the Internet. The graphic that is shown in the network setup wizard shows my router but then shows an X in between the router and the Internet. I have tried everything that I can think of.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo a few months ago I bought a wireless router, and I've been using it just fine with my laptop ever since. however, my father-in-law has a laptop and he can't connect to the router. and the other day I bought a brand new desktop PC, and it can't connect tot he router either.both my FIL's laptop and my new desktop detect the wireless router, then when connecting ask for the passphrase. so i put in the passphrase and hit connect, and it says that it couldn't connect (quite the vague error message).
I tried putting in an incorrect password, and an error message comes up saying that the passphrase is wrong, so I know thats not the problem. Next I dissable all security, and both are able to connect to the router just fine, but not with the WEP pass phrase.I don't understand why they can't connect since I have the proper pass phrase. I also have a nintendo DS and Wii, both of which are able to connect to the wireless router with a passphrase, but not without.
so, if I have no security all 3 comps can connect but not the wii or DS. and if I have the WEP security on, only 1 laptop and the Wii/DS can connect. furthermore, my DS requires a WEP security key to connect.so anyways, what would cause the problem with the laptop/desktop recognizing the wireless router, validating the password but not actually connecting? but being able to connect without any security?
I am using LINKSYS WRT54GS2 Router. Mostly I use it for connection via Wireless. I am able to connIect to it via WIRELESS more than one Laptop running Win XP and and tablets.I wanted to connect one more laptop with WINDOWS 7 OS to this network. There is an iMac, an IBM Think Pad and a Dell XPS 410 tower (both running XP) on the network and all were working until this week. All of a sudden I can not get on the internet with the Dell PC. When I try to log into the router, it searches for a connection, but never is able to attain one. My network is displayed and I am using WPA security and have been entering the correct key. I have tried reinstalling the drivers, but with no success. I believe I was able to access a local unprotected site, but after being connected a pass word was required. I also tried ipconfig, but it just flashed on and then immediately off.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a computer at my company that is wired in to the network. we upgraded the core switches a while back and lost connection with the computer. i personally traced the connection back and it is plugged into the switch, but i still get no link lights on the NIC. that network drop and cable work for any other computer or laptop i plug it in to, and the problem computer in question works on any other cable/drop.
