Cisco Firewall :: Memory Required When Upgrading To 8.3 On ASA5520?

Aug 17, 2011

I am looking at upgrading an HA pair of ASA5520's from 8.2(2) to 8.3(1), and am just wondering why the huge upgrade in memory is needed. How are Cisco justifying where the additional memory is going to? Are there supposed to be some massive improvements in performance?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Upgrading Memory For Redundant Supervisor Modules Nexus 7K18?

Mar 6, 2012

I have a doubt about upgrading Memory in Redundant Supervisor Modules Nexus 7K18, i read the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series Hardware Installation and Reference Guide, and the process for upgrading the memory in redundant supervisors do not says that i can have a lose of service, but it also says that both supervisor modules must have the same amount of memory for redundancy to work;If the switch has two supervisor modules, both must have the same amount of memory. If you upgrade the standby supervisor module to 8 GB of memory, you must then switch the active supervisor to standby and upgrade the new standby supervisor to 8 GB of memory.

Cisco Firewall :: Keep ASA5520 Firewall In Sync

I was wondering if there was an easy way to keep the firewall rules in sync between the two firewalls. We have failover with our isp that will move our public facing address block from our primary site to our dr site in the event of a disaster so the ip addresses will not change if we were to have to fail over to the DR site. currently i just have to do any changes that i make on the fail over server but would like a way to at least simi-automat this if not fully automat this so that i can eliminate the possibility of human error of a change happening at primary but never getting don at DR.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 55xx Memory Upgrade And Failover?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA5540 Memory Upgrade - 3Gig

May 10, 2011

I upgraded our ASA5540 to 8.4, THEN noted the increased requirements for Memory. I purchased the 2Gig upgrade, but when installing in the Primary unit today, noted that there were 4 slots. Slots 1/3 had 512Mb modules, so I installed the 2 x 1Gig modules in slots 2/4.

The ASA5540 came up clean, and it "sees" the entire 3Gig of memory.

My question: Is this a SUPPORTED configuration? All documentation I have read only mentions 2Gig of memory. Also, If I had FOUR x 1Gig memory modules, would the ASA5540 support the 4Gigs of memory?

Cisco Firewall :: Pix 515E Memory Allocation Failure

Mar 17, 2011

I am using a Pix515E with 8.0(3) and 128MB RAM. It ran OK for months but has recently had several episodes during which it produced streams of memory allocation failures (syslog 211001). When in this condition I could not log into the VPN. It was still operating but some users were having problems and I eventually had to restart it.

The traffic load is typically 10Mbps, and the max number of connections is around 10,000 but typically 5,000. The CPU usage is 10%-20%. There is 1 VPN with normally 1 client. The memory usage is always high, between 115MB and 120MB but during these problems it creeps higher.

Why might the memory usage be so high when my network load is quite light for the 515E? What circumstances cause the memory usage to increase during operation? Is there anything I can do to prevent the memory usage increasing to the point where the PIX crashes?

I have a second 515E with 8.0(4)32 and 64MB RAM, loaded with the same config. I have not had this one in service, but off-line it is using 53MB of memory. If the spare pix needs 53MB to load the firmware and my config, why does the other one use 115MB?

Cisco Firewall :: Very High Memory Utilization In PIX 515e?

Feb 15, 2012

We had two PIXes in our environment and working as a active-failover mode. Its noted in now a days the active PIX memory utilization is 98% and for standby PIX it is 96%. And also in some times we were experiencing packet loss to the ip of active PIX and which reflects in the inside servers access also. During that time the active pix was not accessible via ssh as well as ASDM. We have tried reloading the PIX and changing failover state of the PIX, but it results only a temporary solution. Current memory installed is 128 MB (maximum upgraded), so a upgrade is also not possible. Please see the show command outputs from the PIX. Current Software version is 7.2(4)

sh memory output (PIX 1 - active)
 Free memory:         4850944 bytes ( 4%)
Used memory:       129366784 bytes (96%)

[code]....

1) How we can pin point the root cause of this high memory utilization?

2) What might be the reason for the high memory utilization for the standby pix (96%), still the PIX is in idle state?

3) Is it a hardware issue or a memory leak issue, then how can we find out?

4) Is a software upgrade to new version resolves the memory issue?

Cisco Firewall :: Tips For Freeing Up Memory On ASA 5505?

Cisco Firewall :: Upgrading From PIX To ASA 5512X

Mar 12, 2013

We are in the middle of upgrading from two PIX's to some new ASA5512X's. To give you some background on the situation we are upgrading these since the PIXs are fairly old. We had one extra that we had to use since one PIX has failed already. The guy that implemented the PIXs orginally was learning how to do so as he went so there is alot of needless config in the PIX, atleast from what I can tell. Another guy that works with me has done some configuration on the new ASAs and has done the majority of it so far. Today we went to install the new ASAs and switch everything over hoping it would work, but that didn't happen. It seems that there is something wrong with our NAT and ACLs somewhere along the lines. The way our network is laid out is that we have two school campus with a site-to-site VPN one is 172.17.0.0/16 and the other is 172.18.0.0/16. We also have a remote-access VPN on both ASA's. When we connected the new ASAs up and brought up the interfaces, nothing on the inside could ping the internet nor the other side. The VPN showed active on the ASA's and each ASA could ping the others outside interface, but that was it. I have posted the configs below.
