Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560E Switch Went Down Due To A Power Surge
Jan 27, 2012
recently a Cisco 3560E switch went down due to a power surge. the switch is getting power but i am only seeing the below message continously. it is keep on rebooting. i try to reset to factory settings/ safe boot nothing worked. is there any way i can bring the switch up or it is hardware failure.Using driver version 1 for media type 2Base ethernet MAC Address: 00:23:33:af:1b:00Xmodem file system is available. The password-recovery mechanism is enabled.Using driver version 1 for media type 2Base ethernet MAC Address: 00:23:33:af:1b:00Xmodem file system is available. The password-recovery mechanism is enabled.
I need 10gigbit uplink for this switch. What are the other devices that i need order along with this device. And what is the diff between X2-10GB-LR= and CVR-X2-SFP.if i take CVR-X2-SFP, in future how can i upgrade from one gig to 10 gig?for current use i need 10gig support required. so what are all the other devices that i need to order.Fiber multimode and distance 15Mt only.
3945 is running c3900e-universalk9-mz.SPA.151-4.M2 3560e is running c3560e-universalk9-mz.150-1.SE
I've got brand new 3945's with onboard 16-port 3560e switches. On the first power up I see that there are several new vlans added that appear to be default vlans..
vlan 2 name fst2 vlan 3 name fst3 vlan 4 name fst4 vlan 5 name fst5 vlan 6 name fst6 vlan 20 name VLAN0020 vlan 21 name VLAN0021 vlan 22 name VLAN0022 vlan 23 name VLAN0023 vlan 99 name VLAN0099
I deleted the vlan.dat and reloaded the switch but these vlans come back. What these vlans are intended for and is there a better way to get rid of them? What does "fst" stand for?
I implemented the 3560E switch, this one have two Giga bit ethernet/10-Gigabit Ethernet module slots. I used the Twin Gig Converter Modules and one SFP. All configuration was applied in the Ten Giga bit, however the interface giga bit ethernet is UP UP state and the Ten giga down down.
I recently upgraded a remote site of mine to IOS 15-2.SE ipbasek9 on 3 3560E series switches. On switch number 2 I have 5 VG224's running (vg224-i6k9s- m) 12.4(22)T3. After the switches reloaded the VG224's dropped their connection. After doing all basic troubleshooting I reloaded the 12.2 (58)SE2 ipbasek9 image back on to the 3560E's and the VG224's reconnected immediately after reload and all phones registered.
Is the problem a licensing issue with the 15.x IOS on the 3560's or do I need to upgrade the VG224's to IOS 15.x as well for them to connect and operate via the 3560e switch running 15-2?
is it possible, to use a Catalyst Switch (in my case a 3560E) as a source for a console session to another Catalyst? In principle to use it as a console terminal server.
There was short power surge ( for a second only), and after that my laptop lost connection with home network. To be more specific, only one laptop lost connection, two other and iPad have no problem to connect. I brought laptop to the store where I purchased it 12 days ago, and there it worked. Brought it home - same thing, it can not connect to home network, and keep getting message that password is incorect ( and is not). Finally, I replaced laptop for completely new one, ant sill have the same problem: can not connect to home network a nd when brought to the store -it works. Of course I did that drill with connect/disconnect modem, router, pc's more than one time.
After a quick power surge forced my desktop to reboot, it can't connect to my wireless network, even though everything else can. It may have been applying windows updates at the time of the surge.
Earlier today I shut down my computer to apply some windows updates. A few minutes after it rebooted a power surge knocked it out for an instant and the computer rebooted again. I don't know if it was done applying the updates but for some reason it can no longer connect to a wireless network. It keeps saying "unknown reason" when it fails to connect. I think I had a static IP attached to it.
My iPhone and iPad can still connect to this network, but this one computer can't. It's a desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium with a broadcom adapter added to it. It's too far away to connect to any wired connection. My router is a Netgear WGT624 v4.
I don't think I can post any IPconfig information here because I'm forced to type this on an iPhone.
I recently upgraded to an EA3500 router using Cisco Cloud Connect after my E2700 series router was damaged after a power surge came through coaxial cabling to my house and was transfered to the router over ethernet.
I have my EA3500 running both 2.4 and 5 GHZ networks running as 802.11n only and a Lynksis WRT54GS router for 802.11g network devices that are left in my house connected to the EA3500 over ethernet.
Since upgrading to the EA3500 - I have noticed that I am having some trouble with my internet connection dropping randomly that was not present when I was running the E2700 series using the same configuration.
I have not been able to get my full internet speeds as promised by Comcast over wireless (30 Mbps - using direct ethernet I can get upto 40Mbps). My two printers connected via ethernet through an ethernet bridge are being stubborn, the IP address constantly changes. I have not changed any settings in the router other than the network name and setting it up for dual band configuration.
Can a Cisco SG300-10P switch power a Cisco SG200-08 switch over POE? Or an SG200-08P power an SG200-08 via POE? I have an area where I'd like to put a small switch, but would like to avoid having to have electrical power run to it. Or will the SG300 and SG200 POE switches only power endpoint devices such as cameras and IP phones?
I have a 6509 that has dual SUP32's.Just want to make sure and give a reason(if there is one). Slot 6 always becomes the active hot on a full reboot. Meaning from no power to the whole switch to powered on. What is the election process for Supervisors?
I have an issue with a 3560 in my network, after sometimes it fails to give out power to some ip phones, while others are not affected and below is the message i get
"Power given, but Power Controller does not report Power Good"
output of sh power inline and sh env all : everything seems to be ok on the switch

It's solved by a reboot of the switch, i could have suspected a power environnment issue but it's the only equipement disturbing in the network.
I have upgraded my C3560-PS-S switch to the latest IOS version 12(2)55-SE4 and it is not providing PoE anymore? It used to work before this upgrade? I searched Cisco bugtrack and there is bug defined for this IOS/Switch.

We have one switch 4510R which could have total 300 cisco GE color phone connected. That means 300x15.4=4620W. Considering the 89% effiency for the PoE line cards, that means each line card needs 5191W input power from chasis power supply. Based on the 6000W power supply specs, only up to 4800W is allocated for PoE purpose. But we need 5191W from power supply which redundant mode can't offer. We don't want to go with combined mode. So should we add external power shelf to add more power?Another question will be how much power we need from utility or UPS. For example, the efficency of cisco power supply is 75% and we use two 6000W power supplies in redudant mode. Then we need 8000W. The voltage is 220V. Then the AMP we need is 36.4A from UPS or utility power.
i have one of my switch modules that shows PwrDown when i issue the command show mod.

i tried disabling the diagnostic monitor for the module, did a power enable module command and then reset it but it still fails. this is the third blade that i am replacing in a few weeks and i still get the same error. i am persuded that it is not a hardware since it is the third blade in a matter of weeks. after the module reset, i receive this error % module 3 is operationally off (FRU-power failed)
could an ios upgrade solve this issue? are there any ios related bugs?
power supply problem...?Switch cisco WS-C3750-24P is showing "Unavail" from sh env all.Switch3750#sh env all FAN is OK,TEMPERATURE is OK,SW PID,Serial# Status Sys Pwr PoE Pwr Watts,Does it means that power supply 1 was removed? failed?,Do you know about another command to see more details?
I would like to check if it may be possible to hot-upgrade/swap the 4506E power supplies? Based on the configuration guide; I have summarized the steps as follows:
1. Switch has 2 existing power supplies to be upgraded
2. Remove right side/bay 2 power supply and install new power supply
3. At this point; the new power supply will be in err-disabled due to different power supplies on the switch
4. Remove the left side power supply and install new power supply
For item 4; during the removal of the old power supply in bay 1/left side and installation of the new power supply; I am wondering if the switch would lose power even though the new power supply is installed in bay 2?
The following discussion is based on cisco cat 6500 switches with two power supplies: p1 and p2. . Both power supplies are running in combined mode .Each power supplies is rated with 500 watts max( I just picked 500 watts for simplicity)Combined mode In combined mode, each power supply provides approximately 83% of its capacity to the chassis. This allows for greater utilization of the power supplies and potentially increased PoE densities
1) Let say our specific 6500 switch's configuration requires 1000 watts. We have two power supplies p1 and p2 ,each with rated power of 500 watts. Both power supplies must operate in combined mode. Will power supplies be able to meet the total load power requirement of 1000 watts?
Here is my understanding :The maximum power delivered by each power supplies is 83 percent of its rated power, assuming power supplies are running in combined mode.
So Maximum power delivered by power supplies
= 83% of p1+ 83% of p2 = 83% of 500 + 83% of 500 = 415 +415 =830 watts
Thus the required load of 1000 watts can not be met by our power supplies in combined mode.
2 )Suppose our switch's switch configuration needs 500 watts. Again our power supplies each rated with 500 watts, are configured for combined mode. How much power is being delivered by each power supply? Is it 83 percent of the total load i.e 500 watts?
I have 4 switches in a 3750-X stack. Here is the output from the stack why are the switches out of order and I'm not able to bring up switch 1 port 1.
switch 4 port 2 shows not connect it is I've checked the cables.

My cisco 3550 EMI switch is not responding to power connection. I have checked and changed power cable. its still not working.fan is not running and no lights on front panel
I have a 3750x 48port POE switch that I installed a second power supply in. But it doesnt power on. Am I supposed to enable it in the switch somewhere? I've plugged it into a couple different outlets so I know that's not the problem.
I want to know how much minimum power required for swicth catalyst 3750.I want to know cause in my building place, the power in unstable so it make my switch corrupt/damage even i add power consistancy....
How much amount power to the ups and ups to switch?
I have a few 3560E running Ver 12.2(50)se2. Can these boxes be configured to run VRF. I see a "sho IP VRF" option, but I do not see it available when under config t. Do I need to do a IOS upgrade to be able to configure VRF?
I upgraded four 3560E, 12.2(44) to 12.2(55)SEThree 3560 works fine, the last one stops after 17-18 seconds with a solid green LED. I cant get into ROMmon, the switch doesn't boot up. its like "dead but still alive"
My TS: 1: Removed all SFPs. 2: Reset PSU and fan modules. 3: Replace PSU and fan modules. 4: Try to get into ROMmon.(pushing mode button and break seq.) Startup LED:0-1 seconds: SYST: Amber RPS: Amber STAT: Green DUPLEX: Green SPEED: Green 1-17 seconds SYST: Blinking Green RPS: OFF STAT: OFF DUPLEX: OFF SPEED: OFF 18 s--> (only testet up to one hour) SYST: Solid Green RPS: OFF STAT: OFF DUPLEX: OFF SPEED: OFF
A working 3560EStartup LED information. If I compare a working switch with the faulty switch I can see about 18 seconds into bootingSYST change very fast from green to amber and continues with booting, this doesnt happened on the faulty switch (solid green 18 seconds). Pushing MODE button, doesn't get me in to ROMmon, this works for all the other switches. On a normal 3560 it takes around 40 seconds before I get in to ROMmon. With this faulty switch it stops after 18 seconds(solid green) and it doesnt respond.
We have two Cisco 3560E layer 3 switches at the core of our network. The switches are configured as an HSRP pair and the clients on our network point to the HSRP address as their default gateway. So if CORE-A dies, then CORE-B will pick up the address and the default route for the clients will continue to be available. We also need to specify a few static routes on the core switch to allow us to get to specific networks. Is there a way to do this so that the routes failover in the same way that the default gateway does?

i recently deployed cat4507e switch along with 3 nos of WS-X4748-RJ45V+E - 48 port gigabit PoE modules. I am using polycom IP560 phones.
I am facing issue of some switch ports (randomly) stops supplying power to phone at random time. So far there are about 4 incident and i have been plugging those connection to different - usused ports. I am planning to RESET the switch module during weekend and i think it might fix issues with those ports.
But what would be quick and easy way to fix this issue when the issue is faced? How/what to check on switch port interface wrt to power? If switch module is falling short of overall power requirement, is there a way to boost the power?
