Cisco Switching/Routing :: Etherchannel Suspended Between Catalyst 4948 And VSS 6506E

Dec 23, 2012

I describe an issue when i need to performe an L2 or L3 Etherchannel from a Catalyst 4948 IOS Enterprise and 2 xCatalyst 6506E bandled with VSS.

From the VSS Side when i plug cables i see on the physicals and Etherchannel that Physical and protocole layer are up. On the 4948 side, I see that physical layer is up and protocol and Etherchannel interfaces are down.

On the Etherchannel port summary i see that the port state is supended.

On the first attempt, i have test with a L3 etherchannel on both side using no switchport with two IP addresses one at each side on etherchannel interfaces.

The etherchannel are bundled with LACP mode active and on the second attempt with PAGP mode ON.

The same configured on VSS 6506E work fine with Catalyst 3560E.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5510 Isolating Switch Ports For A Separate Network

Feb 2, 2012

I have to configure failover Active/Standby on my ASA 5510.I am wondering how i could do for the outside interface, i mean, actually the ASA1 outside interface is linked directly to our Internet router. So now if i have to add ASA2 connecting to that router i will need a switch between them.I have already a switch for DMZ & LAN.The thing is that i will have to allow 3 switchs ports to communicate with each others.

- 1 for ASA1--outside
- 1 for ASA2--outside
- 1 for Internet router

How could i isolate these 3 ports to make them communicate alone ? Should i use VLAN for that ?And if i use VLAN, will this require to make any change of configuration on my firewalls (ASA1 & ASA2) outside interface ?I am a bit lost with this, if i am correct i will not have to do some "vlan tagging" on the firewall itself ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750X Performance After One Member Reboots

Aug 6, 2012

Pure 3750X-48PS ip base stack. One switch reboots from a power issue (possibly the master switch? Haven't confirmed yet in the 3 cases I've seen)The rest of the stack stays running fine (as it should), the rebooted switch rejoins the stack just fine

What I've observed after this scenario takes place is that network throughput on any port in the entire stack is severely degraded.  Prior to the one switch rebooting, I can hit gigabit transfer rates going anywhere on any of the switches in the stack.  After one member reboots by itself, I typically hit a transfer wall around 5-20mbps in one direction and sometimes better going the other direction. I've only confirmed this on 3750X stacks and I can replicate it every time.  Newest code I've experienced it with is 12.2(58)SE1.  I have not seen confirmed reports of this on older 3750 (E, G, plain) stacks of which we have a ton of.

Rebooting the entire stack so that all 3750X members are coming up at the same time solves the transfer rate issue every time.  I would think there has to be a better way to get performance back to normal or prevent the performance hit in the first place.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: CBS 3120X-S Switch Stack Member Down

Mar 4, 2012

I have a 3 member CBS3120X-S stack in a HP C7000 enclosure (switches 1, 3, and 5). Switch 1, (the previous stack master) is not showing up in the stack and all the ports are down. Switch 3 has taken over as master, but I don't know what happened to switch 1.  The system and stack lights are green and I am not seeing any messages in the log. I reset switch 1 and that did not resove the issue. I disconnected the stack cable and reset the switch again (pulled it out and pushed it back in) and connected to it with a console cable. I get nothing on the console, not even rommon mode. I was connected at the default baud rate that worked when I connected the conole of the other switches in the stack, so I don't think is a serial configuration issue. If this is CBS hardware problem, I don't understand why the system light is green.

Switches 1,3, 5 and provision configuration:

switch 1 provision ws-cbs3120g-s
switch 3 provision ws-cbs3120x-s
switch 5 provision ws-cbs3120g-s

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Replacing 3750X Stack Member?

Feb 7, 2012

I have two 3750X in a stack. Each 3750X has one 10Gb uplink to primary core1 and one 1Gb uplink to backup core2 configured in 2 etherchannel groups. The member switch has bad ports, so I need to replace it. I have spare 3750X unit. Is it possible to connect the spare unit to the stack and then move the RJ-45 cables from the member with bad ports to the new member? That way I can minimize servers downtime to just a few seconds..If that would work, then the last step would be to move the 10Gb networking module from old member to the new one, as well as the secondary PSU. Is it doable? Also according to the documentation, all I need to add new member is matching IOS version, correct?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 / Replacing Failed Member In Stackwise?

Dec 18, 2012

The stackwise marketing info states that when a failed member is replaced with a new switch the replacement switch "gets the exact configuration of the old device".  I would figure it takes a little more than just disconnecting and connecting a new switch in the same spot on the stack. doing this with 3750 family switches?  What are the steps to prepare the stack for a new member?  what steps need to be taken on the replacement switch before insertion into the stack to make sure it gets configured like the unit it was replacing?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 7513 PSU In TBD State?

Oct 23, 2012

I would like to request assistance from all the gurus here for an issue i have with a Cisco 7513MX PSU. There probably arent many people who are aware of 7500 chassis as they are quite old.Isse: PSU 1 failed in chassis and we tried to replace it. Once replaced, we are getting the following output for it:

1#sh env all
Arbiter type 2, backplane type 7513MX (id 2)
Power supply #1 is TBD (id 0), Power supply #2 is 1200W AC (id 1)

We have been researching on the internet for answers but unfortunately due to the age of this model, there is very limited information available. We did find information which suggested to have BOTH PSU 1 & 2 with same revision. Right now the chassis is running only on PS2, we dont want to take down the chassis just to confirm the revision number on the PSU and there is no way to see that on the CLI. What we can do is get another pair of same revision PSUs, insert PSU1 first THEN take out PSU2 and then insert the same revision as PS1 in PSU2 slot but the moment we insert PSU1 in we get that TBD state which is not normal status and raises our doubts about putting the same revision PSUs with the method above, there is a chance that after we insert PSU1 in, the moment we take out PSU2, the chassis might not run on PSU1 due to its abnormal state.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4500 Sup6E Priority Queue On Port-channel Member?

Mar 18, 2010

I am trying to implement priority queuing (LLQ) on a pair of 10GE links between a 4507 with Sup6E and a 4948 which are configured as an etherchannel. I am unable to configure a priority queue on the 4507.  I am running into the following issues:

I want to have a priority queue for voice traffic and specify minimum bandwidth for a critical application. If I configure a class with the priority command it will not let me use the bandwidth command on another class unless the priority class is policed. If I try it without the police command I get the message "bandwidth kbps/percent command cannot co-exist with strict priority in the same policy-map ". If I add  a police statement to the priority class then I don't get this error.

When I try to apply the resulting service-policy to the physical interface it says "% A service-policy with non-queuing actions should be attached to the port-channel associated with this physical port" and does not add the command to the config.

If I try to associate the same policy-map to the port-channel rather than the physical interface it says "% A service-policy with queuing actions can be attached in output direction only on physical ports" and does not add the command to the config.

All of the other interfaces on the 4500 are working OK. The trunks have auto qos voip trust configured and access ports are marking the critical application traffic.

The 4507 is running 12.2(44)SG1 EnterpriseK9. I don't have the luxury to upgrade blindly to fix the problem unless I can identify a specific bug that is causing the problem.

We have two 4500, and we tried the new model in the other 4500 and it´s working properly and giving a OK status. Furthermore, the module´s LED status is green. We saw that there are 8 ports (from 17 to 24) that are in faulty state, so probably this is the cause for the faulty state for the module.

We tried already a Hw reset, replace/insert again the module...

We are almost sure that it can be a Hw failure. We are getting the following results different commands:

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Cannot Get VLAN In Spanning Tree Forwarding State

Dec 9, 2012

We have a pair of 6500 switches, each having a trunk going to each access switch. We set the spanning tree priority on Core1 so it is the root bridge for all VLANs. We have two different types of access switches:

-3550 setup as VTP client and ISL
-2960 setup as VTP transparent and dot1q.

Pruning is disabled but we use "switchport trunk allowed vlan" to restrict which VLANs go through each trunk. When we need to permit a VLAN through a trunk, we simply run "switchport trunk allowed vlan add <VLANID>" on the access switch and both core switches. If it is a 2960 in VTP transparent mode, we must set the VLAN to active. Once this is done, a "show int trunk" will reflect the new VLAN in "Vlans in spanning tree forwarding state and not pruned" for Core1.

I recently went through this process to add VLAN 250 on a 3550 access switch, but the VLAN is not listed in STP forwarding state and not pruned. I tried removing the VLAN from the trunks and redoing it, but there is was no change. I tried adding VLAN 257, but the same behavior happened. I then tried trunking the same VLANs to a few other access switches. Three other 3550s experienced the same behavior, but I was able to trunk the VLAN to a few 2960 switches. At this point, I figured it might be related to some kind of limitation of VTP or the 3550 switches. I provisioned a new 3550 with the same IOS and settings (VTP client, ISL). To my surprise, all VLANs configured were in STP forwarding state and not pruned.

Running show spanning-tree on the core and access switch shows VLAN 250 as designated FWD. I confirmed we are not hitting the limits in "show spanning tree summary totals" on the Core or Access switches. I also confirmed we are not hitting the virtual port limit by running "show vlan virtual-port slot x."My next action might be to shut/no shut the uplink to Core1 from the access switch, but I'm not sure if that will fix it and even if it does, I have no clue what caused the issue.
