Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 Clarification For Using Mac-address-table Synchronize Command
Jul 12, 2010
We want to configure the "mac-address-table synchronize" command on our 6500 series switches to ensure that the CAM tables on our DFCs are in synch with the PFC on the supervisor modules. url...it is recommended that we disable the routed MAC purging with the mac-address-table aging-time 0 routed-mac global configuration command. What is a routed mac entry? Are there any issues with running that mac aging-time command?
We also plan to run this command "mac-address-table aging-time 14400" to keep our ARP and CAM tables on the same aging time to reduce unicast flooding on our network. Can we run this command with the "routed-mac" command above?

We are getting log messages like
%EARL-DFC4-4-NF_USAGE: Current Netflow Table Utilization is 95%
%EARL-DFC4-4-NF_USAGE: Current Netflow Table Utilization is 99%
What this messages really means and how to get rid of these messages. We are using IOS version 12.2(33)SXJ in Catalyst 6500.

I am little confused about the location of FIB table and adjacency table in both cisco 6500 series and fixed ports switches .In case of 6500 series switches
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor,and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode when line cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."
If line cards do no support CEF, then FIB and adjacency tables are built and are located on route processor( control plane ). Data plane operations are implemented in software and route processor performs those operations.
Some Cisco switches actually use different hardware to control the different planes. For example, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 is a modular switch that uses the Multilayer Switch.Feature Card (MSFC) for control-plane operations, and the supervisor Policy Feature Card (PFC) for the data-plane operations.
Supervisor module has has MSFC and PFC. MSFC implements control plane operation where as PFC implements data plane operation.But the first paragraph says in Central cef mode, both data plane and control plane operations are implemented by route processor. [code]
Do these switches implement the Central mode cef in same way as mentioned above. i.e
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode whenline cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."Or fixed ports switches such as 3750 implement data plane operation in hardware where FIB tabe and adjacency table are maintained on Data plane.

I have the switch ============>>>>>
sw2960g============server linux
As u see above , the inetrface Gi0/6 , Gi0/7 are connected directly to linux server by two redundent links .
I mean that Gi0/6 is connected to interface0 in linux server
and Gi0/7 is connect to interface interface1 in linux server
Gi0/6===>vlan 1
Gi0/7===>vlan 2
each interface of linux server has a different ip and different gateway .
Now from switch, I make ping to interface 0 of linux server and i have a reply , every thing is ok but when i type the command :
#sh mac address-table | i Gi0/6
There is no Mac addresses and seems no Mac address relative to Gi0/6, I mean that doesn't it mandatorty to learn the mac address of linux server and write in mac table relative beside interface Gi0/6 ? How I could ping the server but no mac beside Gi0/6 ?

Today I have configured my ACS 5.2-0.26.4 to synchronize with NTP server which is implemented in Cisco 6500, but it don´t become to work. The switch Core is configuared in HSRP, for that reason in the ACS server I defined the IP virtual of the Core like ntp server, maybe the ACS don´t work with IP virtual of the switch Core. Finally I wanto to kown if is posible to synchronize this versión of the ACS withc cisco 6500. I had integrated this ACS versión with cisco 2800.. maybe the ACS could integrate with same special models.

I am on a call right now troubleshooting some latency issue. The CPU usage on the sup card is low. Don't see any drops or input errors. I am aware that the switch and its modules have capability limits. Is there command I can run which will tell me if any module is overloaded or if the fabric/backplane is over utilized?My chassis is WS-C6513 and sup card is WS-SUP720-3B.

I'm trying to configure my C3550 with fast ethernet port 0/48 assigned to vlan 2 in static access mode and SVI vlan 2 configured as dhcp client.
But I see command ip address dhcp is not available on interface vlan 2:
Cat3550(config-if)#ip ad
Cat3550(config-if)#ip address ?
A.B.C.D IP address
Cat3550(config-if)#ip address
Could it be a problem related to the version running on the equipment (see below the output of sh version command not sure of what EA1 stands for)? I read here [URL] that this command was introduced in version 12.1(2)T
If it is a version problem is there any possibility to download upgraded version for free?

The customer has 4 6500 switches. 2 Physical locations, and 2 switches at each locations. The locations are connected via 1 200mpbs metro ethernet(layer 2). We ran into an issue during a DR exercise. We had created a VLAN for DR testing purposes, that did not have any SVI configured, but the VLAN did exist on one of the 6500s. When the customer restored a VM to the DR VLAN, we lost connectivity to the production server. After some troubleshooting, we found the cause to be the same mac address showing up, but in a different vlan. Once we removed the DR vlan from the 6500 all was well. It seems like switches are ignoring the VLAN in the mac address table, and forwarding to the incorrect ports. The switch is not reporting any mac flapping in the logs. No spanning tree topology changes are occurring. Code version is 12.2(33)SXJ2 on all switches.

I currently have a 3560G switch running c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-58.SE2 I have a spare 3560 V2 switch I want to configure and have ready in case of a failure. This spare switch is running c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE5 My plan was to pull the IOS image from the current switch and upload it to the spare that way I have an "idnetical" switch. From what I have read, there are some feature differences between "ipbase" and "ipservices". However, when I run the show license command on the production switch, I get an unrecongnized command error. So that throws into my confusion as if its running an ipservices image, shouldn't it have a license file?

What I meant is that I am trying to implement a system that uses two wireless cards to enable a user to move from one access point to another without droping the call because the handover should take a maximum of 50ms (miliseconds), that is why in this approach two cards were use so while one is scanning for new access point the second one will still communicate in oreder for the call not to be drop and this action will keep going anytime where there is a need ofhandover?

I have 2 servers, one active, the other standby, both will be using the same IP. If the active fails then a re-patch for the standby to make this the active. I understand that i will need to clear the arp & maybe mac address table on the 6500 for the new active server to work, as the failed server will have its mac address on the 6500,.
is there a way around this so i dont have to clear the arp cache & clear the mac table? [code]

description client vlan
ip vrf forwarding A
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
standby 129 ip 10.1.1.2
standby 129 timers 1 4
standby 129 priority 105
standby 129 preempt
ip helper-address 10.1.2.20
[code]....
dhcp requests are not making it to the dhcp server SAME VRF (ip helper-addres is not doing anything.....)extended vrf traceroutes on udp 67 sourced from vlan2 are fine
I am expecting udp unicast packets on port 67 "giaddr" relay packets on the DHCP server generated and sourced by the relay on Vlan1
eg. Mar 1 01:59:06.731: DHCPD: setting giaddr to 10.1.1.1
This exact setup works in our preprod environment with the same code.Only difference is we run Distributed etherchannel on the 6500's where this doesnt work.
Wireshark on the client I can see the requests being sent Going to check it with debug ip dhcp server to check the relay logs out of production hours.
I have seen so many people say it IS and ISN'T supported on this version of the code.e.g. [URL]
I am aware the helper-adddress should inherit the vrf of the interface ip helper-address vrf command is not supported.The fact it works in the PP environment.... could this be due to the Distributed EtherChanel difference? or just some bug....

I have just updated a VLAN interface on my router. I have two 6500's with GLBP configured. The particular interface had a primary and secondary IP address. I shutdown the interface on one router and deleted the secondary address then assigned the orignal secondary address to be the be the only address associated with the interface and enabled the interface and it came right back up...all looks good. I proceeded to do the same thing to the other router and once again all looked good. Now, I am able to PING the devices in the subnet from router, but am unable to ping them from any place else. We have a couple of 6500 series switches and have 3 BGP peerings to each. The 6500 series switches are loaded with WS-SUP720-3B Supervisor Engine. I believe there is a limit to the number of IPv4 routes WS-SUP720-3B supports(256,000). We also have "soft-reconfiguration inbound" configured on the BGP peerings. Thus when I do a "show ip bgp A.B.C.D" it displays three routes from 3 BGP peers and it displays an additional 3 "received-only routes" which I think is due to the "soft-reconfiguration inbound" configuration. We currently filter inbound routes from the BGP peers to be between /0 and /27
We are now looking to add another 2 BGP peerings. I am not too sure if the WS-SUP720-3B will be able to handle all the BGP routes. Is this limit of 256,000 IPv4 routes due to Processor memory limitation or is it software related? Would removing the "soft-reconfiguration inbound" save me some memory ?
