Cisco WAN :: 6500 Processor Memory And BGP / RIB Table
Jan 23, 2013
We have a couple of 6500 series switches and have 3 BGP peerings to each. The 6500 series switches are loaded with WS-SUP720-3B Supervisor Engine. I believe there is a limit to the number of IPv4 routes WS-SUP720-3B supports(256,000). We also have "soft-reconfiguration inbound" configured on the BGP peerings. Thus when I do a "show ip bgp A.B.C.D" it displays three routes from 3 BGP peers and it displays an additional 3 "received-only routes" which I think is due to the "soft-reconfiguration inbound" configuration. We currently filter inbound routes from the BGP peers to be between /0 and /27
We are now looking to add another 2 BGP peerings. I am not too sure if the WS-SUP720-3B will be able to handle all the BGP routes. Is this limit of 256,000 IPv4 routes due to Processor memory limitation or is it software related? Would removing the "soft-reconfiguration inbound" save me some memory ?

I am very new to high end Cisco devices.(like 7600/6500 or ASR9K).
Why do we log in on RP. What actions we can perform after logging-on RP (route processor) or Why they are required ? Cant we make those by normal router mode (router#) .

I am seeing a strange situation on my 6500 switch?By having snmp walk on '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3' (== cpmCPUTotal5sec), I came to know that there are two processor and the cpu util for switching processor is gone to 88 % and some time creeps to 99 %.
snmpwalk -v2c -c "removes" sw6500 '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3'
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.1 = Gauge32: 12 (--- this is for CPU of Router Processor )
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.3 = Gauge32: 99 (--- this is for CPU of Switching Processor )
but when I do sh process cpu on the console, all looks normal as it shows cpu utilization of RP. why the value is so high on the switching processor ?

i just noticed that im getting some alloc memory errors with a flexwan card i have on a cisco 6513 on slot 5/1, however i can't seem to figure out how to get more information on this and if the issue is related to the flexwan module or the DS3 card itself. Not really sure how to view memory stats/errors for a particular flexwan card on the 6500 platform. The 6500 has been up for a long time and rebooting it might work but i wanted to know what should be done before i reboot the 6500.

What is used DDR memory on DFC on linecards for Cisco 7600 or Catalyst6500? I thought that DFC has copy of TCAMs from PFC. That PFC only has TCAMs, and it doesn't have DRAM on itself?
I've been said that if I have full BGP table in memory on supervisor on 6500 (that should be DRAM on RP on MSFC) that I also need 1GB additional memory on DFC on linecards? Is this true? But that should implied that DFC also has copy from MSFC not only from PFC, is this correct?

We want to configure the "mac-address-table synchronize" command on our 6500 series switches to ensure that the CAM tables on our DFCs are in synch with the PFC on the supervisor modules. url...it is recommended that we disable the routed MAC purging with the mac-address-table aging-time 0 routed-mac global configuration command. What is a routed mac entry? Are there any issues with running that mac aging-time command?
We also plan to run this command "mac-address-table aging-time 14400" to keep our ARP and CAM tables on the same aging time to reduce unicast flooding on our network. Can we run this command with the "routed-mac" command above?

%EARL-DFC4-4-NF_USAGE: Current Netflow Table Utilization is 99%
What this messages really means and how to get rid of these messages. We are using IOS version 12.2(33)SXJ in Catalyst 6500.

I am little confused about the location of FIB table and adjacency table in both cisco 6500 series and fixed ports switches .In case of 6500 series switches
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor,and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode when line cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."
If line cards do no support CEF, then FIB and adjacency tables are built and are located on route processor( control plane ). Data plane operations are implemented in software and route processor performs those operations.
Some Cisco switches actually use different hardware to control the different planes. For example, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 is a modular switch that uses the Multilayer Switch.Feature Card (MSFC) for control-plane operations, and the supervisor Policy Feature Card (PFC) for the data-plane operations.
Supervisor module has has MSFC and PFC. MSFC implements control plane operation where as PFC implements data plane operation.But the first paragraph says in Central cef mode, both data plane and control plane operations are implemented by route processor. [code]
Do these switches implement the Central mode cef in same way as mentioned above. i.e
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode whenline cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."Or fixed ports switches such as 3750 implement data plane operation in hardware where FIB tabe and adjacency table are maintained on Data plane.

In datasheet of WS-SUP720-3B - link- was said that are only supported around 256K routes (fib?rib?).With this value I can't get 2 full bgp - that is around 850K ..
The supervisor is that control this or just memory ? I said this because I have a 7204-npe-g1 whith 2 fullrouting and 1G of and he are ok..

My client using 3845 as a core router . 200 number of branch are connected through 6 ISP.Some of days average process shows 90 % . Max time 50 %.In the morning when Branch location are off then time also high utilization.High utilization is not continue after intervals of time or periodic time its goes to high.
have any solution for that ?. before once 3845 is crash for that. another is ready for replacee.We test another device like core switches for observation CPU rate.

The Cisco 2911's have aggregate 1.6 Gbps towards route processor - I am trying the same specs for Cisco 3845 router? from url...The EHWIC slot provides enhancements to the prior generation's high-speed WAN interface card (HWIC) slots while provide maximum investment protection by natively supporting HWICs, WAN interface cards (WICs), voice interface cards (VICs), and voice/WAN interface cards (VWICs).
• Four integrated EHWIC slots on the Cisco 2901, 2911, 2921, and 2951 allow for more flexible configurations.
• Each HWIC slot offers high-data-throughput capability
• Up to 1.6 Gbps aggregate toward the route processor
• Up to 2 Gbps aggregate to other module slots over the MGF

I am running a 1712 12.4(25d) with NAT, VPN and FW/IDS. I have a broadband ethernet connection at 20mb. As I run some traffic through it, the processor jumps up to near 100% and throughput comes to a screeching halt. IP CEF is turned on and makes no difference when it is turned off or on.

I am a little stuck trying to troubleshoot unusually high cpu on 7600 Platform.This has been going on for many hours and not been causing a problem, but this doesn't seem replicated in our network and I am concerned about the cause.I have attached some output below, and disabled netflow on interfaces to free some switching CPU. How to track the cause of this? We only have routing protocols and 5 static routes to Null 0, so I cant see how this can be a route loop, but willing to stand corrected. Routes are learned from BGP with OSPF/MPLS internally on the network. This switch also connects to access switches on RIP and EIGRP.
No change has been made to this device when this problem started to occur so I am suspecting something about the traffic has changed or there is a rougue user? [code]

We are running a stack of 2 WS-C3750X-24S-E's with IOS version 12.2(58)SE2 and we are seeing continuous high processor utilization involving the hl3mm process. The stack is configured for PIM Sparse mode, with 2 upstream Nexus 5596'es acting as both RP candidates and as BSRs. The hl3mm process generally runs at about 19% but can spike up into the 60% range.Symptoms on the 3750X are spiking latency and sluggish CLI perfformance. I thought at first that we might be running into SDM limits, but the "show platform tcam utilization" show that we are far under the limits of the default SDM template. Performing the "show ip pim (vrf name) bsr-router" command freezes the system and takes 20-30 seconds to return results. Similiarly configured WS-C3750G-12S running 12.2(55)SE3 does not exhibit these same issues.
