Cisco WAN :: 7600 / 6500 / ASR9K - Route Processor Information
Feb 19, 2012
I am very new to high end Cisco devices.(like 7600/6500 or ASR9K).
Why do we log in on RP. What actions we can perform after logging-on RP (route processor) or Why they are required ? Cant we make those by normal router mode (router#) .

does the Cisco 7600 Series SPA Interface Processor-600 (7600-SIP-600-DC) only support a single SPA, e.g. 1 x SPA-OC192POS-XFP?
The 10Gbps through put on the 7600-SIP-600-DC and [URL]to show that this is the case.

I am a little stuck trying to troubleshoot unusually high cpu on 7600 Platform.This has been going on for many hours and not been causing a problem, but this doesn't seem replicated in our network and I am concerned about the cause.I have attached some output below, and disabled netflow on interfaces to free some switching CPU. How to track the cause of this? We only have routing protocols and 5 static routes to Null 0, so I cant see how this can be a route loop, but willing to stand corrected. Routes are learned from BGP with OSPF/MPLS internally on the network. This switch also connects to access switches on RIP and EIGRP.
No change has been made to this device when this problem started to occur so I am suspecting something about the traffic has changed or there is a rougue user? [code]

The Cisco 2911's have aggregate 1.6 Gbps towards route processor - I am trying the same specs for Cisco 3845 router? from url...The EHWIC slot provides enhancements to the prior generation's high-speed WAN interface card (HWIC) slots while provide maximum investment protection by natively supporting HWICs, WAN interface cards (WICs), voice interface cards (VICs), and voice/WAN interface cards (VWICs).
• Four integrated EHWIC slots on the Cisco 2901, 2911, 2921, and 2951 allow for more flexible configurations.
• Each HWIC slot offers high-data-throughput capability
• Up to 1.6 Gbps aggregate toward the route processor
• Up to 2 Gbps aggregate to other module slots over the MGF

We have a couple of 6500 series switches and have 3 BGP peerings to each. The 6500 series switches are loaded with WS-SUP720-3B Supervisor Engine. I believe there is a limit to the number of IPv4 routes WS-SUP720-3B supports(256,000). We also have "soft-reconfiguration inbound" configured on the BGP peerings. Thus when I do a "show ip bgp A.B.C.D" it displays three routes from 3 BGP peers and it displays an additional 3 "received-only routes" which I think is due to the "soft-reconfiguration inbound" configuration. We currently filter inbound routes from the BGP peers to be between /0 and /27
We are now looking to add another 2 BGP peerings. I am not too sure if the WS-SUP720-3B will be able to handle all the BGP routes. Is this limit of 256,000 IPv4 routes due to Processor memory limitation or is it software related? Would removing the "soft-reconfiguration inbound" save me some memory ?

I posted also under Service Providers for my problem with MPLS/VPN. I just noticed I have the same issue with plain IPV4 BGP. [URL] I have two 7600 running on SRC3 and SRD6. Both acting as RRs.
I noticed that RR1 is reflecting the route to this other 7600 iBGP peer but not installing/importing the route. Other iBGP speakers are able to install and import the route. Is there any issue with 7600 SRC/SRD IOS for Route-reflection?
iBGP policy is similar to all but only the 7600 is unable to install the route. Other 7200 ibgp peers are successful.

I am seeing a strange situation on my 6500 switch?By having snmp walk on '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3' (== cpmCPUTotal5sec), I came to know that there are two processor and the cpu util for switching processor is gone to 88 % and some time creeps to 99 %.
snmpwalk -v2c -c "removes" sw6500 '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3'
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.1 = Gauge32: 12 (--- this is for CPU of Router Processor )
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.3 = Gauge32: 99 (--- this is for CPU of Switching Processor )
but when I do sh process cpu on the console, all looks normal as it shows cpu utilization of RP. why the value is so high on the switching processor ?

how many sessions a BGP Route Reflector can support? is it 10, 100 or 1000 BGP sessions? What degradation of performance may arise in the case of a BGP RR sessions overload? Consider that the RR I'm deal with has both the control plane and teh forwarding plane. Which command I may use for get the output about BGP sessions resurces used level?
The following are the data about the RR:

What is used DDR memory on DFC on linecards for Cisco 7600 or Catalyst6500? I thought that DFC has copy of TCAMs from PFC. That PFC only has TCAMs, and it doesn't have DRAM on itself?
I've been said that if I have full BGP table in memory on supervisor on 6500 (that should be DRAM on RP on MSFC) that I also need 1GB additional memory on DFC on linecards? Is this true? But that should implied that DFC also has copy from MSFC not only from PFC, is this correct?

I have run into a problem testing static route failovers using ECMP. I have an edge device (SUT) that has 2 NIC interfaces to an internal Loopback. Each NIC is a unique Gi port on an 7609 VLAN tagged with unique IP subnets. The 7600 is configured to route the loopback via the 2 NIC. I am using CEF in the network for other traffic performance testing. Using an external sniffer we can verify that when a ping is initiated externall to the SUT loopback a specific path is selected by the router.
Ping host ------Network-----7609 Gi1/21 (172.16.110.9)-----------SUT Nic1 (172.16.110.10)
| |
| -------Loopback 137.168.68.114/32
| |
7609 Gi2/21 (172.16.110.73)------------SUT Nic2 (172.16.110.74)
[code]....
Now, when the selected path is taken out of server (pulling cable for example), the 7609 is not clearing the routing table to indicate that particular path is down and failing over to the secondary path. Other things I have noticed is the show ip cef still shows both peers as well as the arp table but the interface shows down (show interface gi1/21 for example). I am running 15.1. My understanding is that since the ports are directly connected to the router, the ports should be detected as down and any association of the IP for the down port should removed. This should trigger the static route to update the static route for the end destination to use the second path and traffic should continue.

we have applied route-map on vlan interface in the form:
ip access-list extended TEST
permit ip 172.16.1.128 0.0.0.127 172.16.0.0 0.0.255.255
route-map TEST permit 10
match ip address TEST
set ip next-hop 172.16.111.1
interface Vlan11
ip policy route-map TEST
The problem is in the traffic matching by the rule - there is matches not only for 172.16.0.0/16 prefixes but for the whole traffic in that VLAN.

The route-map and access-list ae not being used at all. Anyny tips for how I can get this removed - for info the process is mush easier on 7206 VXRs.

I'm performing tests with following desired scenario: We have several remote offices, connected to our HQ via MPLS. In these remote offices, we have several vlan's. Each vlan has it's own ip-range. The MPLS cloud is routed, so we cannot switch our HQ vlan's to the remote offices. In this case, the client pc is in a guest vlan which allows him internet access. The uplink for this internet access is hosted in our HQ datacenter.
basic scheme:
client pc --> MPLS cloud (managed by ISP) --> 6500 switch LAN --> Checkpoint Firewall --> 6500 switch DMZ --> ASA Firewall
My test scheme:
Client pc is in a subnet A (guest vlan range office).
We receive this traffic on our first LAN 6500.

Since the ACE supports only static routing, when pointing a default route from the ACE what is your preferred method when using multiple 6500s with an ACE in each in a failover scenario to prevent just pointing at one 6500? Static route to an HSRP address? Multiple static routes on the ACE, etc?

I have an issue with my setup of a 6500 switch (12.2(33)SXI9).We have a 6500 switch with several VRF's. For a certain VRF I would like to redistribute a static route in EIGRP. After doing so I don't see the static route on my eigrp neighbor.
This is a overview of my config. I'm basically redistributing only my static route for this vrf in eigrp.
I found a similar case in which the solution was adding a metric to the static route. (eg. redistribute static route-map static-eigrp-pp metric 10000 100 255 1 1500). But the strange thing is that we don't have this issue on a similar machine (same IOS, same config setup). [code]

I am currently deploying Cisco ASR9K BNG solution and it needs to be integrated with a Cisco ACS 3.3 (yes that old .. going to migrate to new product in the future) equipment. There are several specific attributes need that are not on the base config of the ACS 3.3 but it seems that i can configure them manually:In addition to supporting a set of predefined RADIUS vendors and vendor-specific attributes (VSAs), Cisco Secure ACS supports RADIUS vendors and VSAs that you define. Vendors you add must be IETF-compliant; therefore, all VSAs that you add must be sub-attributes of IETF RADIUS attribute number 26..This is from the ACS 3.3 configuration manual.I have never done this user defined VSAs.

I need to adapt a Cisco Catalyst switch configuration into a new ASR9000 router and I do not know how to configure trunks and access ports on an ASR9K router.
This is the configuration of the catalyst switch I want to replace.
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/1
description Access-Port -> SERVER
switchport access vlan 5
spanning-tree portfast
!
[code]....
Am I right? Or do I need to use the command “rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric”on any of the interfaces o subinterfaces? Do I have to configure the command “encapsulation dot1q untagged“ on the GigabitEthernet0/0/0/0.5 subinterface?

I'm doing a large-scale snmpwalk against an ASR9k (with IOS-XR v4.2.0) running as a provider edge router (full bgp table) and pulling the full contents of the BGP route table. On other routers, this completes within my timeout window, but not on the ASR9k.Figuring that this has to do with CoPP rate-limits, I've adjusted the rate-limits to ridiculously high values.
But still, the walk doesn't complete in an acceptable amount of time. Manual snmpwalks display a rate slower than even 7600s, with occassional stutters. CPU on the box doesn't even register that anything extraordinary is going on (@ 2 - 3%), and "show lpts pifib hardware police location" shows that there are 0 drops against SNMP.I haven't turned yet - either some traffic shaping mechanism or some combination of process scheduling/priority with SNMP.
