Cisco Switching/Routing :: 871 Factory Reset Without Password?
Jan 24, 2012
I recently decomissioned an 871 from a small business site and the owner did not want the device anymore. So now I'm trying to use it back at the office in the sandbox, however I don't know the password to the device and neither does the business owner. There's a reset button on the back, but from what I've read (here), it only loads a different config file found on the internal flash. Tried this, no dice. Is this essentially a bricked router now or is there anything else I can do to clear the config and repurpose it for my use?
Im trying to access the switch to reset the password to factory defaults (please see switch output Astrix has removed customer identifying information for security purposes.) Each time I reboot the switch and try and access the password recover mode this same output below starts and im still not able to access the recovery area of the switch
cisco WS-C3560G-48PS (PowerPC405) processor (revision F0) with 122880K/8184K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FOC1133Y28Q Last reset from power-on 1 Virtual Ethernet interface 52 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces The password-recovery mechanism is enabled.
I am trying to factory reset CE500 switch, as described in the factory rest section of the documentation. I do not get an IP address via DHCP from the switch.
On boot up I hold the setup button down, wait till the lights go solid amber release setup. wait for a port on the switch to start blinking green port 1 starts blinking green, plug my pc into port and wait for IP..and keep waiting !!!!
I have tried this on 3 switches now all with the same result.... NO IP offered.
We have inherited a Catalyst Express 500 (model WS-CE500-24PC) from a company we aquired, and are having issues configuring the switch.
The switch must have been configured previously, but we don't know its IP address. It is no longer on the network, so we can restart it as much as we need to.
We followed the factory reset process:
1) Disconnect the switch from the power supply 2) Reconnect the switch while holding the "SETUP" button 3) Release the "SETUP" button when the status LEDs all turn Amber 4) Wait for POST to complete 5) Connect one PC to the port whose LED starts flashing
However, the PC is never given an IP address, and when we open a web browser, anything we try to browse to gives us "Page cannot be displayed", rather than the setup page for the switch.
Are there any known issues or browser/OS incompatibilities with this model of switch? We're using Vista and Windows 7 with IE7, IE8 and Firefox 3.
I have a cisco 800 that needs to be reset back to factory defaults. I tried typing in "config factory-default 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0" at the conf t prompt, but I got an error Invaild input detected at ^ (the ^ is just under the word factory). So after a bit of reserch I came across this command "write erase" that seemed to do something but now I can't get any ip addreses. Here is the running config:
Using 1104 out of 131072 bytes ! version 12.4 service config
I have been trying to reset my Cisco 4507 R-E with sup 10GE engines, and I am not having any luck. I have followed the following document:

I have tried "wr erase" and "erase startup-config." I cannot delete the vlan.dat file either. I am using the command "erase cat4000_flash:vlan.dat" and its not working either. I have done these commands several times with no success. When asked if I want to save the config changes, I am answering with a "no" I have not tried to depress the small "reset" button on the front of the sup engines as I read that this just restarts the switch.
I reset my Cisco 2911 ISR to the factory defaults. I then used the configuration guide to do the initial set-up through the CLI. I was able to assign IPs to the GE0/0 and GE0/1 ports. Now I cannot access the GUI device manager at all. I was able to ping the IP of GE0/0 so I know the adapter took the IP assignment, but still no GUI access.
I have a cisco 2960 that I seemed to have lost the password. Its just a test switch. I would like to know how to reset it to factory default. I have managed to get to a switch: prompt by holding in the small mode button on the front of the switch and pluging in the power but lost from here.
I have a cisco PIX-515e which i have connected to a emulator through the console port, and im having trouble erasing data from it. I can get into 'pixfirewall' mode and 'monitor' mode but thats as far as i get. i have tried 'write erase' and 'configure factory-default' in both modes to no success.
I was trying to do a password recovery on a 1142 AP but enable password did not reset and I am stuck
AP model is AIR-AP1142N-A-K9 Running IOS c1140-k9w7-mx.124-21a.JA1
Its autonomous so there is no controller. I renamed the config.txt file I am unable to rename or delete the private-config file. I get the message that file or directory cannot be found when i try to rename and permission denied when I try to delete it.
I need to recover the passwords for my 3750 stack (2 switches), I have the password recovery documentation but it seems to be referring to recovery for one switch. How do I go about recovery when in a stack, should I remove the links on the switches and recover each one separately?Alternatively can I do a factory reset on them
I have tried pressing the Reset button (within 5 secs) when the router power up. On my HyperTerminal, the image was loaded and the line interfaces were up. But when I press enter on HyperTerminal, there was no response.
I trying to do password reset on a 506e that I got with the current password unknown. I've gone to the Cisco URL for the reset: [code]
I am using the correct bin file as I checked with my pix version. Also I CANNOT ping the firewall from a PCor system on the network, but CAN ping everthing from the PIX.I've tried using interface 1 but no go. Also I've checked the TFTP software (Solarwinds) is running fine and I've unblocked it in XP's firewall.
I recently received a Cisco 3548 XL Switch, I'm trying to reset the password from the console. I've followed the steps but when I type from here: [code]
Acquired a 3875 Router with a NME-16ES-1G-P switching service module recently. I don't know what the passwords are. I reset the router, and gained access to it, but how do I reset the password on the service module?
I am not able to successfully accomplish the password reset function. This 2950 does not respond to the mode button held down at power up or to sending a briak. I have tried both several times and the switch continues to fully boot. [URL]

have a Switch I bought off a guy at work. Just to get into the Switching world of Cisco. He doesnt know the password on it and i cant reset the switch. I would like to mess around with it more but it doesnt load the flash or helper. It just sits there and holds. I have tried the password recovery and everything. Trust me, everything is correct, but it wont work for me. I cant load a new image to it because I dont have access to a server to get it from.
Base ethernet MAC Address: 00:0a:8a:94:58:c0Xmodem file system is available.
The system has been interrupted prior to initializing theflash filesystem. The following commands will initializethe flash filesystem, and finish loading the operatingsystem software:
how to recover password and retrive configuration on Cisco switch 2950 and 3560.I know the way to press and hold the mode button and then plug in the power cord can reset the switch to factory default but it will reset everything to nothing. As such, it is not what I want and I want to keep the configuration file and able to use the configuration on the switch.
I forgot the user for management a IPS SSM-10, when i follow the procedure to reset the password for cisco user, i can get into the module, i change the password and every thing is OK, but when i tried to configure y don´t have rights to do anything.
if i see the privileges for the user cisco this is the result. [code]
I've inherited a IAD2430 router but I don't have the ena passwords nor am I able to do a break and do a password recovery. I'm familiar with the password recovery process and config reg settings but this one has me stumped.
The config register is set to 0x2102 so I see nothing at all when it boots until it's completed and I get the prompt to "Press RETURN to get started!" I get to non priv mode but without the password obviously I'm going nowhere at that point. All the docs I've come across so far assume you can break out of the boot process or are already in rommon. When I remove the flash: I get no output at all... The IAD has no "reset" button like the CAT switches either.. I don't need the current config, just a reset/format of the NVRAM.
I have an AIR-AP521G-E-K9 and i want to reset to factory default in CLI.I tried "write erase" but dont work.I have problems with access-list and i want to desactivate access-list that i have created by web GUI.The problems now is that i can not access to my AP, no ping, no web GUI access.Access that i have is only by CLI, but access list is always blockinh all tha traffic trought my AP.How can i desactivate mac filtering, or how can i reset to factiry default
We've recently changed data line providers and now have some Cisco 877 routers we'd like to reconfigure and use at other sites. Although we own these, they were configured by our old data line providers, I'm having a hard time of resetting them to factory defaults. The simple, hold down the reset button until it restarts does not work.If I press the reset button within 5 seconds of power up to load the default rom image, I get the below:
System Bootstrap, Version 12.3(8r)YI4, RELEASE SOFTWARE Technical Support: [URL] Copyright (c) 2006 by cisco Systems, Inc. C870 series (Board ID: 1-148) platform with 131072 Kbytes of main memory Booting flash:c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-24.T.bin Error opening: flash:c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-24.T.bin
[code]....
I assume from this the required bin has either been removed, renamed or overwritten. As soon as the router boots it requires a password and I dont have the password to be able ftp files in and out of it.
i got the ACS 5.1 at work..after migrating the data from 4.1 a lot of data got changed into the 4.1 so I needed to reset my configuration (since i played around with the 5.1)after doing so, I can't access the web page, to start the configuration again tried the administrator-setup but it didn't work,
I can't figure this out and there isn't much documentation on the subject online. The reset button just resets the device even after holding it for 10+ seconds and there is nothing in the CLI.
I successfully pulled it out of the box and already broke it.
What I did to lose my connectivity to it (via IP, console is OK), but I'd like to start from scratch and during my learning/experimentation I will undoubtedly need to do this over and over until I get things right.
I've found various guides, none of which look like what I am after. Basically, I want to return this to the condition that it was in when it came out of the box. IOS is version 12.4(6)T11 .
I put a config on this switch and it is having some issues I would like to take it back to out of the box state however I am not sure how to do this ? I do not need to blow away the IOS just the config I put on it
