Feb 23, 2012have a Switch I bought off a guy at work. Just to get into the Switching world of Cisco. He doesnt know the password on it and i cant reset the switch. I would like to mess around with it more but it doesnt load the flash or helper. It just sits there and holds. I have tried the password recovery and everything. Trust me, everything is correct, but it wont work for me. I cant load a new image to it because I dont have access to a server to get it from.

May 26, 2013how to recover password and retrive configuration on Cisco switch 2950 and 3560.I know the way to press and hold the mode button and then plug in the power cord can reset the switch to factory default but it will reset everything to nothing. As such, it is not what I want and I want to keep the configuration file and able to use the configuration on the switch.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3548XL Port Spanning / Mirroring With Snort IDS
Oct 30, 2012I am trying to configure a SNORT IDS system running on a physical machine using Linux as the base OS. I have a small lab network setup with 3 VLANs, a 3548 switch and a 2611 router acting as the router on a stick/inter-vlan router. My goal is to setup SNORT as a host-based IDS system. To do that I know I need to use the "port monitor" command on the switch and I have tested this and it works fine only when the snort system and the traffic I want to monitor reside on the same VLAN.My problem is I want to be able to monitor a trunk link betwee the switch and router to see traffic coming from my 3 VLANs which contain servers. My goal is to run attacks on the servers to test SNORT's effectiveness.
Relevant information from my configuration: interface fa 0/1 on switch is the trunk like carry 3 vlans to the router On the switch:

int fa 0/5
port monitor fa 0/1
switchport mode access
The switch will not allow me to configure fa 0/5 as a trunk, only can be an access port.So right now, SNORT does not see any traffic other than traffic from my router to the switch. I assume because this is going over the native VLAN (1 in this case) and that is the same VLAN that SNORT box resides on on interface fa 0/5. So I know the span is working to an extent, but traffic from my other VLANs (server to server traffic) does not show on SNORT at all.I have done some research on Cisco.com and see the following seemingly contradicting information:
VLAN Filtering When you monitor a trunk port as a source port, all VLANs active on the trunk are monitored by default. You can use VLAN filtering in order to limit SPAN traffic monitoring on trunk source ports to specific VLANs Then I see, under the section for the 3500 series: A monitor port cannot be a dynamic-access port or a trunk port. However, a static-access port can monitor a VLAN on a trunk, a multi-VLAN, or a dynamic-access port. The VLAN that is monitored is the one that is associated with the static-access port.
My question is, does that mean the 3548 cannot support spanning a trunk link and having all VLANs on that trunk be monitored correctly to the monitoring port? I know the 3548 is old, but it is the only thing right now I have to work with. I could put the SNORT box inline on the network, but that is another mess in itself.

So now I'm trying to use it back at the office in the sandbox, however I don't know the password to the device and neither does the business owner. There's a reset button on the back, but from what I've read (here), it only loads a different config file found on the internal flash. Tried this, no dice. Is this essentially a bricked router now or is there anything else I can do to clear the config and repurpose it for my use?

Jan 31, 2011I bought a 3548XL switch off ebay for real cheap. I am configuring it right now for home use, mainly to play with.
It has IOS 12.0 and doesn't support even some basic commands, like int ranges or even the do command in global config mode. And it doesn't seem to support VLANs either.I have looked through Cisco's site and couldn't find what I was looking for. I dont know if my switch supports the newest IOS, or which version IOS that it does support. The switch isn't listed in the IOS software advisor.

I've tried both the Cisco Network Assistant and Internet Explorer and I am unable to log in either way. The documentation provided by Cisco states that the default password is simply cisco and that a username is unnecessary. Needless to say, it doesn't work. I've also Googled for other default passwords (such as cisco-cisco as the username-password), none of which worked either. I've also tried resetting the switch back to its factory default a few times.

Nov 27, 2011I am trying to factory reset CE500 switch, as described in the factory rest section of the documentation. I do not get an IP address via DHCP from the switch.
On boot up I hold the setup button down, wait till the lights go solid amber release setup. wait for a port on the switch to start blinking green port 1 starts blinking green, plug my pc into port and wait for IP..and keep waiting !!!!
I have tried this on 3 switches now all with the same result.... NO IP offered.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst Express 500 Factory Reset
Sep 30, 2009We have inherited a Catalyst Express 500 (model WS-CE500-24PC) from a company we aquired, and are having issues configuring the switch.
The switch must have been configured previously, but we don't know its IP address. It is no longer on the network, so we can restart it as much as we need to.
We followed the factory reset process:
1) Disconnect the switch from the power supply
2) Reconnect the switch while holding the "SETUP" button
3) Release the "SETUP" button when the status LEDs all turn Amber
4) Wait for POST to complete
5) Connect one PC to the port whose LED starts flashing
However, the PC is never given an IP address, and when we open a web browser, anything we try to browse to gives us "Page cannot be displayed", rather than the setup page for the switch.
Are there any known issues or browser/OS incompatibilities with this model of switch? We're using Vista and Windows 7 with IE7, IE8 and Firefox 3.

I have tried "wr erase" and "erase startup-config." I cannot delete the vlan.dat file either. I am using the command "erase cat4000_flash:vlan.dat" and its not working either. I have done these commands several times with no success. When asked if I want to save the config changes, I am answering with a "no" I have not tried to depress the small "reset" button on the front of the sup engines as I read that this just restarts the switch.
