Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst Blade Switches 3020 For HP
Feb 10, 2013
We have 12 Catalyst Blade Switches 3020 for HP running IOS Version 12.2(55)SE. In the configuration of these switches I see the statement shown below.
no spanning-tree vlan 34,45-55,70,600,643,840,843-850
The 12 blade switches are configured as VTP clients and running VTP V2. I did not configure the statement shown above. It appered by itself. And even if I delete it, it will reapper. (The blade switches are interconnected to two 6509s. The two 6509s are the STP root and VTP bridges. I configure Vlans and STP on the 6509s).
why the statement above appers on the blade switches 3020s?
I mean I use other Cisco switches such as 3750s and 3560s and I have never seen the statement above appear by itself.
I try to connect a cisco blade switch 3020 to Nexus 2232 with etherchannel, but when I connect the second link a obtain flapping on vlans. [code] why the vlans are flapping ? it's something wrong on the config ? [code]
Our switch model is "Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP" We are building HA (High Availability) Databases infrastructure.Currently, there are two nodes(hosts- servers) and two above switch for HA.
Oracle said we need to turn off the IGMP Snooping in order to use the multicasting for their interconnect communication. So my question is:
Q1> Is there any way to use Multicasting without turning off IGMP Snooping on Switch side?
Q2> If 'yes', how can we configure the switch for Multicasting ?
Oracle uses 230.0.1.0 & 224.0.0.251 IPs with 42000 range port for Multicasting communication.
I have a Cisco Catalyst 4507R+E (with Sup7-E) and two blades; one WS-X4748-RJ45V+E and one WS-X4648-RJ45-E.
When I connect a device to a port on the WS-X4748-RJ45V+E blade the port will not come up, show interface shows the status as "notconnect". When I connect the same device to the WS-X4648-RJ45-E blade the interface comes up.
The WS-X4748-RJ45V+E blade seems to have initialised okay, it appears in the output of "show module" as OK.
I get exactly the same effect on a second, identically configured Catalyst 4507R+E.
The software version is IOS XE 3.1.0SG, which according to the release notes supports the WS-X4748-RJ45V+E blade
3750 switch connects to Blade-switch_1 and Blade-switch_2 Spanning-tree mode is configured as rapid-pvst on 3750 switch, do I need to configure rapid-pvst on both blade-switches or keep the default pvst config.3750 is running VTP domain HQ and transparent mode Both Blade_switches are running VTP domain CLI and transparent mode To configure Etherchannel between 3750 and blade-switch_1 do I need to have all devices in same vtp domain?

I am looking for some troubleshooting for some Cisco blade switches that are running high CPU. I have two 3020 blade switches in an HP chassis that each have two 1G links port channeled a pair of Nexus 5548s. Spanning tree has been constantly running about 35% of CPU for the last couple of weeks causing management SVI latency and CLI lag. The Port channel is the root port and the switches have no other connections.
Here are the things I have tried in troubleshooting the issue.
-Remove links from port channel so that one is forwarding and one is blocking -Removed the blocking link so that the switch only has one uplink. -Converted from pvst to rstp -Entered no spanning tree vlan <all vlans> so when you do show spanning tree there are no instances of spanning tree-Connected the single uplink to a different switch
Nothing has changed the continuous high spanning tree utilization of about 35%.
The 3020 switches server interfaces are configured as trunks for ESX running on the blades. It seems the only possible loop that could be causing this issue is on the ESX virtual switches, but I am not sure how that is possible. I say this because I have another pair of 3120s that have the exact same problem! However they were working fine (CPU normal) until the enclosure was populated and began switching traffic. After they began carrying a medium/heavy network switching load, the 3120s are running at a constant 56% spanning tree CPU utilization!
I am working with a strange problem at the minute with HP's NIC Teaming with Transmision Load Balancing. We have a HP blade system the Server is connected to 2 cisco 3020's and then those 2 switches are connected to a 3750 Stack consisting of 2 Members.
Theres an LACP ether channel consisting of 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports to each 3020 from the 3750 Stack. They both have exactly the same configuration and all ports are up and the channel looks healthy.
When setting the Preference order on the server if I set the NIC connected to the 1st Cisco 3020 as primary i.e. Tx/Rx then everything is fine.If I set the NIC Connected to the 2nd Cisco 3020 as primary then all seems fine i.e. I can ping it, it can access services outside its own vlan and the internet. It cannot however ping anything connected to the same subnet and VLAN on the 3750 Stack.
Doing a packet capture on a server connected to the VLAN on the 3750 stack I can see the Echo Requests coming in and the server sending an echo Reply but the echo reply never gets back to the server with the teamed NICs.
I did a Layer 2 traceroute and all looked fine, all the MAC Tables were good.I thought maybe it was a layer 2 loop causing the problems but I have checked and re-checked STP and can't find any problems. STP has picked up one intentional loop and blocked it.
I've raised a ticket with HP to see if they can point me in the right direction but I don't think it is a problem with there Drivers. It definately seems like a networking problem.
have setup a small lab as per CBTNuggets. Everything was going well until I introduced a second switch to create a trunk. Now I cannot ping between my two switches. Both show operational mode as down:
I have tried to allow all vlans or vlan 1 specifically and the output of the above doesn't seem to change. I am wondering if there is something in the config-register that is preventing trunking, but I don't really know enough yet!
The output of my second switch is identical to this one, the only difference is that I have it configured as a vtp client.
why the AutoQoS macro does not implement "priority-queue out" when configured on the 3750 platform running certain versions of software. The only other platform I have experience with AutoQos is on the 4500 and it enables priority queuing as expected. So what's up with autoqos on the 3750 on version 12.2(35)SE5?
When it comes to configuring QoS on campus user/phone access ports there are some important settings that can and should be considered but one can argue that enabling the priority queue is the single most impactful or important command. So I was very surprised and concerned when I didn't see priority-queue out. Cisco describes AutoQoS as a simple, quick way of deploying QoS on the LAN and it precludes you from having to learn all of the differences between hardware platforms. But is it true that this tool produces an incomplete config solution? Let me know if I am missing something.
Here is an example of what AutoQoS produces when applied to a 4507 with WS-X4648-RJ45V+E:(other interface commands are left out for simplicity)
interface GigabitEthernet5/25description XYZ switchport mode accessauto qos voip cisco-phoneqos trust device cisco-phoneservice-policy input AutoQos-VoIP-Input-Cos-Policyservice-policy output AutoQos-VoIP-Output-Policy policy-map AutoQos-VoIP-Output-Policy class AutoQos-VoIP-Bearer-QosGroup set dscp ef
[code]......
Here is an example of what AutoQoS produces when applied to a 3750 running version 12.2.(35)SE5: (no priority-queue out)
I have a customer with Cisco 7940 and 7960 IP phones that they do not plan to replace. They do want a new LAN and are looking at the Catalyst WS-C2960S-48FPD-L and WS-C2960S-24PD-L as access layer devices.
these switches support the Cisco pre-standard PoE required by the 7940 and 7960 IP phones.
We just purchased (3) WS-C2960-24CT-S and (1) 3750G, what's the proper way to cascade this switches? Do I need to use crossover cables from port to port? Do I need to change the mode for the ports to use?
We have a couple of Cisco switches and connected a (Windows 7) laptop to one of them and it gets its IP address from a DHCP server.I can now ping the IP from all of the switches, no problem, also not when I log on to the core switch in the same VLAN as both notebooks. But from my (Windows 7) laptop, which is in the same VLAN as the target laptop, I cannot ping it.
I checked, default gateway is good on both sides, as are DNS servers.
I've been conducting research on configuring 3 distribution switches in my network which are Cisco Catalyst 4507's to communicate with our core over layer 3. Our core switch which is already configured at Layer 3 for intervlan routing is a Cisco Catalyst 6509.
I've got the configuration portion complete and all devices are able to communicate my only question is about QoS. Do I have to configure QoS at the layer 3 interfaces for voice, if so how is that completed. We have several vlans and separate the vlans for each building by voice and data. We only configure ports on the access switches with voice vlans for QoS and we use the auto qos option on these interfaces.
Are there any best practices for preventative maintenance on Catalyst Chassis switches. Looking to build a PMI schedule for a customer. Or is there evidence not to perform it at all. Things like re-seating line cards, cleaning fan exhausts, etc.
what is the difference between Cisco Nexus switches and the usual catalyst 3750 switches.I do understand the operating system in both these are different.
When will we suggest using Cisco nexus instead of usual Cisco switches? Also what interface does Cisco nexus like 5548 come with , is it both copper and fiber?
Does a portable RPS device either from Cisco or another manufacturer exists, that would allow you to move primary power for a switch without causing an outage? I realize that for the Catalyst 3560 for example, you can get an RPS 2300 or 675, but my understanding is that these are made for a more permanent installation, not to mention rather costly.
It looks like the RPS 675 is rather inexpensive after all, especially in the secondary market, but still rather large for toting around.
If i replace a card of the same type in the same slot will I lose the configuration for that card or does it live in the backplane of the device? Is there any special command I need to run to replace the card or can i shutdown the 4507r-e and just swap out the blade?
Im having problems changing a connection between a Cisco3560 and Cisco IBM Blade switch 3012 actually the configuration is access in Cisco 3560 and trunk int Cisco 3012 when i change the connection to trunk i lose conecctivity to the servers connected in the 3012, i have changed the access from vlan 1 to the respective vlan in the access port of the servers
Looking at the specs for WS-X6704-10GE, it shows the port buffers at 16M per port. This doesn't seem like very much for a 10G port. Is this upgradable or related to how much RAM is in the blade?
we have 2 WS-X6516-GE-TX, WS-X6516A-GBIC, and a WS-X6748-GE-TX with a WS-F6700-CFC daughtercard
our sup is a WS-SUP720-3B
we are experiencing packet loss for everything connected in the WS-X6748-GE-TX blade, right now we dont have any production device in that blade due to the packet loss we are experiencing.
this switch was running hybrid before it is now running native ios, however I can't recall if we didn't have that packet loss before. do i need to update a firmware of the card or daughtercard (if this is possible, can't say i've done it before).
i have one of my switch modules that shows PwrDown when i issue the command show mod.
Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No. --- ----- -------------------------------------- ------------------ ----------- 1 9 Supervisor Engine 32 8GE (Active) WS-SUP32-GE-3B SAD09120263 2 48 48 port 10/100/1000mb EtherModule WS-X6148-GE-TX SAL1029VWZ5
[Code]....
i tried disabling the diagnostic monitor for the module, did a power enable module command and then reset it but it still fails. this is the third blade that i am replacing in a few weeks and i still get the same error. i am persuded that it is not a hardware since it is the third blade in a matter of weeks. after the module reset, i receive this error % module 3 is operationally off (FRU-power failed)
could an ios upgrade solve this issue? are there any ios related bugs?
I have a LAP-1142 connected to one of our PoE blade in our 4506 switch, it used to work fine with the following power consumption:
Interface Admin Oper Power(Watts) Device Class From PS To Device --------- ------ ---------- ---------- ---------- ------------------- ----- Gi4/3 auto on 21.5 20.0 AIR-AP1252AG-A-K9 3
However, we had power issue on Apr 28, so it failed and we saw from the log below:
Apr 28 13:57:38.990: %C4K_ETHPORTMAN-3-INLINEPOWEROVERDRAWN: Inline powered device connected on port Gi4/3 exceeded its hardware protection threshold.Apr 28 13:57:39.694: %PM-4-ERR_DISABLE: inline-power error detected on Gi4/3, putting Gi4/3 in err-disable state After the power restored later, the other LAP connecting with the same blade restored without any problem, except this one:
Interface Admin Oper Power(Watts) Device Class From PS To Device --------- ------ ---------- ---------- ---------- ------------------- ----- Gi4/3 auto on 16.6 15.4 Ieee PD 3
- Incoming frames on three of a blade's four switchports are being put into VLAN 1 even though the ports are either in other access VLANs, or are configured as trunks with different VLAN IDs being tagged by the server. - When the ports go down the access VLAN is removed from the port.
Switch stack: 4x WS-CBS3120X-S, 12.2(58)SE1 HP blade: HP BL460c Gen8
This combination has been used successfully elsewhere.
Switchport configuration:
! interface GigabitEthernet1/0/13 -------> THIS PORT IS OK switchport mode trunk
I'm trying to get the VFC up in B22-FEX blade in Dell which is connecting to Nexus 5596UP.
The message I get is

I received 3 GESM cisco blade switches for a HP Blade system. I do not have the chassis. I need to sanitize these blade switches but I have never worked with these. I don't see any removable flash. Where is the config stored?
I have 6 of these WS-CBS3012-IBM modules that need to be configured but I cannot access the USB console port. I was told I could just get any DB9- to- USB cable and that would work. I did buy a DB9-to-USB cable and it did not work. I looked up the installation guide for this module and it just said the console cable is DB9-to-USB but with no part number.
