Cisco Switching/Routing :: Management IP On 4500X When VLAN Gateway Is A SVI?
Dec 5, 2012
I'm trying to figure out how to (or if I can) setup the management interfaces (fa1) on a couple of new 4500X switches. My issue is that the 4500X's themselves are the gateway for my management VLAN (.1 HSRP virtual, .2 and .3 SVIs on the pair of switches).
I would like to assign addresses from the management VLAN to the router Fa1 management interfaces but the software configuration guide seems to note this is not supported (and indeed it doesn't seem to work).
Physically I have Fa1 from core-1 into a port on an adjacent switch. Fa1 from core-2 also goes into a port on that adjacent switch. Both are in my management VLAN, whose SVIs are on the cores themselves.

In mucking around with my 4500 I accidently deleted the ip address that I use to get into it with telnet and CNA. I have a console cable hooked up to and I'm in that way but the commands I got off the internet did not work. Those commands were set interface sc0 10.x.x.x/xx and set interface me1 10.x.x.x/xx. It didn't like interface and I notices when I did a set ?

i have a small network with Polycom phones connected to the sf300 switch and have the pc's daisy chained via the second switch port on each phone. i have the pc traffic running on the default vlan 1 and the voice traffic running on the voice vlan 100. can i do bandwidth management on a vlan/port basis or is that not necessary. i want to ensure that the voice traffic is never impacted by the pc traffic on the same cable.

spam up the boards with the same basic CCNA level stuff, but I have a couple of questions about ios differences, limitations, and references. I have the following three switches. One appears to be considerably dated in regard to software version. My confusion/ignorance stems from managing VTP settings.
2924XL 12.0 5 WC8
2950 12.1 22 EA6
2950 12.1 22 EA6
When I set either 2950 switch as the VTP server, and the other as a client, the client inherits the server settings as expected. However the 2924 requires that I go into the vlan database from priv exec and manually set vtp client. That's pretty similar to setting any switch to client mode. The problem I am observing is that after setting the 2924 to client, it still doesn't inherit vtp version settings or pruning settings. I still have to manually configure those. Additionally, if I copy run start the 2924 after making these manual settings, and then reload the switch, all the settings are lost and it defaults back to server mode with all features disabled. From my searches, it looks like vlan information is stored in vlan.dat, but all the documentation I've found is on 12.1 ios which doesn't appear to use vlan database for vtp setup, meaning it might still be an issue, but not one I'm focused on at the moment.
Is the vlan database dumped at reload? I've read vlan.dat is stored in nvram and should be saved after a copy run start, but that is not the case for me.I have since set the 2924 as the server, manually configured the server from vlan database, executed copy run start, and reloaded the switch. Oddly, my manual settings saved from the reload, meaning I only lose settings when the switch is in client mode.Am I missing additional necessary client commands to save the config, or is this just a limitation of either the 2924XL or the 12.0 ios?On a related but completed out of scope topic, without a cisco service contract, how am I supposed to make heads or tails of all the different versions of ios, along with the letter-based features and what-not? I can't even find my 2924 in the list of platforms when searching for ios upgrades.

Randomly when I try to access to 2950 from management tools, switch is unreachable, I have to access from other switch and reload 2950.
Problem only is from managemt tool to managament vlan 1 2950.
The strange thing is that management interface is encountering a very fast increase of throttles, broadcast and ignored packets:
2950#show interfaces vlan 1
Vlan1 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is CPU Interface, address is 0023.3488.fd65 (bia 0023.3488.fd65)
Internet address is xxxxxxxxxx
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
[code]....
It could be a hardware problem?, IOS has been upgraded.

I have an ASA that houses 11 VLANs, and I am trying to add a 12th.One of the VLANs is for PCs that have internet only access. The new VLAN will be similar, but for multifunction printers only.VLAN 99 is for internet only and works fine, I can ping the gateway of 10.99.3.33 from any PC in that VLAN.I am creating VLAN 98, modeling it after VLAN 99, and I cannot get a PC in the vlan to ping the gateway of10.98.3.17.Both switch and ASA show the new VLAN 98 as UP, switchport is UP/UP.I have deleted and recreated VLAN 98 a few times, but I cannot get a PC VLAN 98 connectivity.Once it is working on the core switch, I will add it to the trunk to the IDS switches. VTP is not in use, everything is manual. [code]

I have a design hurdle that I cannot seem to cross. I have two sites and I need the same VLAN to span both sites. I have accomplished this using L2TP but my issue is that I can no longer assign a gateway for this VLAN on the router. The 2 routers are 2821's and are connected with a dedicated fiber run.
Ant recommendation for how this could be accomplished? It would be great if I could have the same gateway at both sites by leveraging some sort of bridged interface (BVI so I've heard) but I am at a loss as to where I should start with this. Also, this is not the only VLAN that needs to traverse the link.

I picked up a pair of RV220W's and before I spent loads of time at a remote site, I figured I'd go through some VPN testing at home to make sure I could get it setup properly. What this means is I've plugged the Internet uplink into a switch, then from the switch into both routers & configured them (using unique static IP's for each) from there. For what its worth: While I have some IT experience, I don't have strong networking experience.
I setup several VLAN's on the local RV220W, and the end result is to make it so that an asset at the remote site with an IP in any of the ranges (192.168.121.0/24, 192.168.131.0/24, 192.168.141.0/24 and any future VLANs) can communicate with/access resouces at the local site. Likewise, an asset at the local site with an IP in any of the ranges (.121, .131, .141 + any future VLANs) should be able to reach the remote resources (currently just 192.168.181.0/24, but future VLANs as well).
This evening I tried to focus on the relevant VPN pages of the Administration Guide to get the VPN up. Leaving the defaults I got as far as establishing a link between both sites and it seems that things are working right: From the remote site (.181) I can access the local site (.121, .131, .141); and from the local site I can at least ping resources (a laptop) on the remote site. (Yay!)
However, when I physically connected an asset that had a 192.168.121.X, 192.168.131.X and 192.168.141.X IP addresses to the remote RV220W (which is 192.168.181.0/24), I couldn't see it from the remote or local sites.I assume this is expected. But I'm reaching out to the community to see what other possibilities might be available becuase networking is a weak area for me. I figured it might be something like a Static [or Dynamic] Route but I really am not 100% sure.
'TECHNICAL' SPECS

1. is there a command reference available for this ios - can't seem to find out
2. Im using GLC-T gbics and we normally would set the speed to either 100 or 1000 now that option does not seem to be available.
3. when I entered username etc. I got a message " CLI deprecated soon".

I have probem with symmetric load balancig, in case when both ends of ether channel are on the sam switch (we are using VLAN translation). We need to create L2 port channel with both ends on same switch (Cisco WS-C4500X-24X-ES), for example:Po1 – Gi0/1, Gi0/3 (one end of port channel )Po2 – Gi0/2, Gi0/4 (other end of port channel)On ports in Po2 we will configure VLAN mapping. My question is what is the best ether-channel load-balancing scheme with wich we can accomplish full symmetry in both directions? For example, if traffic in one direction goes through Gi0/1 (member of Po1), in other direction also must go through Gi0/1. This is required because we need to connect four appliances for DPI (they are full L2 transparent) and traffic through each appliance need to be symmetric.
I can set-up src-ip, dst-ip, src-dst-ip etc. load balancing, but, actually I need src-ip on Po1 and dst-ip on Po2. Is there any way to set up different load balancing mechanism for different ether channel on same switch (4500X).

We have some ASR WAN routers which have a dedicated 400M interface to a remote site.
Servers on our Local network source the data through some firewalls via 10G interfaces, which connects to 4500X WAN switches then to the Routers on 1G links.
The sources are rate limiting the traffic but the routers are periodically dropping packets which I think is mostly due to burstiness in the traffic between as it traverses through from 10G links to 1G then to 400M.
How to setup traffic shaping on the 4500X outbound port to our WAN routers.I'd like to see if we could buffer and smoothe out the traffic as it exits the 4500X WAN switch 1G port to the WAN Routers.

I have six Cisco 300 Series switches in Layer 2 mode. They are all connected using ports in Trunk mode. These Trunks are tagged members of all VLANS.
I have one 300 series in layer 3 mode with IP address assigned to each VLAN.I would like to use one Internet gateway for multiple VLANS. This gateway has numerous IP ports that forward to internal ip addresses on various machines.
All i9nternal clients use their respective VLAN IP as their default gateway. The Layer 3 switch is connected to one of the Layer 2's using a Trunk that is a tagged member of all of the VLANS.
I understand how traffic routes from a client to its respective VLAN gateway. Where I am confused is how it routes from there to the Internet gateway? Internet gateway is 192.168.1.1.VLAN IP's are 192.168.2.1, 192.168.3.1, etc...
Should the Internet Gateway be patched into the Layer 3 switch or one of the Layer 2's using a separate "Internet" VLAN?

Currently, we have a plain network and we are planning to 'upgrade' it a little. We want to implement VLANs to separate wireless clients, workstations + servers and infrastructure devices form each other. As of now, we have no VLANs, and no managed Switches. We only have an RV016 that handles two ISPs and a 3rd party connection service to the office branches ( I belive they're using Frame Relay, but as far as we know, we are not concerned since we cannot touch their devices)
The reason behind the title, pointing towards the famous SGE2000P, is that my workplace is located in Argentina... and we don't have as many choices as some of you guys have ! In fact, I was unsuccessful trying to get a Cisco partner to contact me. We would like to replace the RV016 with a cisco 1941 (and a HWIC switch card).
So, back to business..! Assuming we will be using the SGE2000P switches, I was thinking about setting VLANs using 802.1Q through seven of these switches, along with a 1941 Cisco router. I'm expecting the 1941 to handle load balancing between both ISPs and the 3rd party link. Now, as for Inter VLAN routing, I would like to have gigabit traffic between VLANs.
Is it possible to use one SGE as Layer 3 mode to hande inter VLAN traffic (gigabit speeds) while using the 1941 as a end point device to reach internet (using PAT) ?Would you suggest me to use the 1941 for Inter VLAN routing, despite the 10/100 limitation(*) and use all SGE's in L2 mode? We need two ISPs, a third link for the FR connection, and finally the LAN interface. As far as I know, I'm limited to the gigabit builtin interfaces for WAN purposes, am I right?

I have two networks at two sites with a dot1q trunk between the two L3 switches at both sites (no routers involved)
SITE A - Cisco 3750 L3 - VLAN ID 50
10.10.50.0/24
SITE B - Cisco 3750 L3 - VLAN ID 50
10.20.50.0/24
I would like to extend the SITE A VLAN to SITE B so that I can move hosts from SITE A to SITE B without needing to change their IP address but the vlan ID is already in use. Obviously the easy solution is to change the VLAN ID for one or other of the sites but both sites contain hosts that run 24/7. Is there a way to join two VLANs with different IDs together. So for example I create a new VLAN 60 at SITE B and associate it with VLAN 50 at SITE A.

I am trying to setup a L2tpv3 VLAN-to-VLAN tunnel. My setup has two Cisco 890 router with Cisco IOS Software version 15.0(1) M4. These routers are connected directly on FastEthernet port 8.
One linux machine is connected on FastEthernet port 0 on each router. The two linux machines are on same vlan. I am trying to establish a vlan-to-vlan tunnel between the routers and send traffic between the linux machines.
I followed the case study 11.4 from [URL] and configured the l2tp-class and pseudowire-class. However, the vlan interface configuration is different on 890 router.
I configured a vlan interface as follows.
(config)#vlan 200
(config)# interface FastEthernet 0
#shutdown
#switchport access vlan 200
(config)# interface vlan 200
I don't see the 'xconnect' command in this context. What's wrong with my configuration?
