Cisco Switching/Routing :: How To Setup Traffic Shaping On 4500X Outbound Port To WAN Routers

Mar 26, 2013

We have some ASR WAN routers which have a dedicated 400M interface to a remote site.

Servers on our Local network source the data through some firewalls via 10G interfaces, which connects to 4500X WAN switches then to the Routers on 1G links.

The sources are rate limiting the traffic but the routers are periodically dropping packets which I think is mostly due to burstiness in the traffic between as it traverses through from 10G links to 1G then to 400M.

How to setup traffic shaping on the 4500X outbound port to our WAN routers.I'd like to see if we could buffer and smoothe out the traffic as it exits the 4500X WAN switch 1G port to the WAN Routers.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA5505 - Outbound Traffic Ceases Even Though Port Is Up

Mar 10, 2011

I've had a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall connected to a cable modem (Virgin Media, UK) for the past 3 years.  In the last 6 months or so I have noticed that the ASA would drop the outside (internet) connection intermittently, usually at least once every 1-2 weeks - the interface still shows as being up but no traffic crosses it, and computers on the inside network abruptly lose internet connectivity.  Rebooting the ASA or administratively shutting down the interface and bringing it back up again would cure the problem straight away until the next time it happens.

In the last couple of days however despite nothing having been changed in the configuration the frequency of this connection drop has increased to the point where I would lose access to the internet within an hour of rebooting the ASA.  It does not seem to matter whether or not there is traffic currently going out or not, inside computers just appear to suddenly lose internet connectivity.

I have tried the following without success:

1) I completely wiped the configuration (configure factory-default)

2) I changed the port the cable modem was connected to (eth0/0 -> eth0/7, changing switchport vlan accordingly)

I thought perhaps 2) had fixed it but it lasted a whole 2 hours before I woke up this morning to find that none of the internal equipment had internet access despite the fact eth0/7 was showing as up/up in ASA CLI.

This morning I manually set the eth0/7 port to "speed 10" (10Mbps, full duplex).  It was previously set to be auto-negotiation (default) on both speed and duplex.  As of this post it has managed to keep the outside connection up for 3 hours - but I'm not optimistic that it is fixed.

Interface counters have never shown any collisions, errors, etc - only packets input and output as expected.

Since the problem persisted across ports (eth0/0 -> eth0/7) I'm wondering whether or not the problem could either be faulty memory, or some kind of speed/duplex incompatibility between the cable modem and ASA.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Inbound And Outbound Per Port Bandwidth Limitation 3560

Feb 21, 2013

I'm intending to purchase a switch for work, and I need to limit the bandwidth of one of the ports to 25 Mbit upload and 25 Mbit download (we have 100/100 Mbit connection and the customer is only paying for 25). I been trying to find information on how this could be "properly" done and what kind of switch I need to buy. As far as I have understood, most L2+ switches support outbound rate limiting, but not inbound, and as I only want the customer to have 25 mbit up and down, I need both.

I been looking at a Cisco Catalyst 3560 switch, and I'm first and foremost wondering if I can limit the inbound AND outbound bandwidth on this switch? Perhaps it can even be done on a simpler, cheaper, switch - as I rather not spend more money then necessary?

Lastly, how to do it, limit the inbound and outbound bandwidth on a single port (perhaps on the above mentioned switch, if possible), to 25 Mbit?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA5550 - Implement Traffic Shaping / Policing Primarily For P2P Traffic?

Mar 10, 2011

We are looking to implement traffic shaping/policing primarily for P2P traffic. As natively the ASA5550 is only capable of p2p inspection if the traffic is tunneled via port 80 is the AIP-SSM the way forward? We have 2 5550s in active/active failover config. As a side note we are also looking to implement an IDS/IPS system so could this module cover all?Is this module going to provide the desired outcome or is there another module/device out there better suited for this? I would prefer to use the ASA5550s as opposed to implementing another product if only that we can make use of the investment we already made on these devices.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3825 ISR - Traffic Route From Switch Port To Router Port

Jun 5, 2013

I'm fairly new to Cisco products am in the process of developing my network knowledge on a deeper level.  I have a 3825 with a HWIC-4ESW and I'm struggling to fully understand how the two "see" each other.  I've setup a V LAN with a layer 3 address on the HWIC and added the switch ports to it.  This seemed to allow devices connected to the switch ports to talk to the built-in router ports.  I thought this was all making sense until i applied an access-list to the router port.  It's a simple ACL i'm just using for testing and the only thing it does is blocks telnet from anywhere.  I know the ACL is setup properly because if I connect a device directly to the router port i cannot telnet to the port.  However, if i connect a device to one of the switch ports, i am able to telnet to the router port successfully.

It seems that I'm missing something with how traffic flows from the switch port to the router ports and how the two "see" each other.

Cisco WAN :: 3750 ME Traffic Shaping Downstream Traffic

Aug 4, 2011

I am trying to come up with the best way to traffic shape traffic with 3750 Me switches.  the traffic will be coming from a 6504 Sup-7203b downstream and going out the wan.  Core---L3---->6504--intvlan80--trunkport to--->3750Me---g/1/1/1-trunkport to---MetroE network--->int f0/0.80--branch router.  The idea is to use the 3750 to traffic shape the traffic going towards the wan/branch to 500 to match the contracted rate and then to use qos on shaped rate.  I tried to apply it to g1/1/1 using port based policies but it did not shape the traffic.  I changed everything to IP interfaces and it worked.  I need to break up the metroe into different vlans so I can bring branch offices in on different vlans.c

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Management IP On 4500X When VLAN Gateway Is A SVI?

Dec 5, 2012

I'm trying to figure out how to (or if I can) setup the management interfaces (fa1) on a couple of new 4500X switches. My issue is that the 4500X's themselves are the gateway for my management VLAN (.1 HSRP virtual, .2 and .3 SVIs on the pair of switches).

I would like to assign addresses from the management VLAN to the router Fa1 management interfaces but the software configuration guide seems to note this is not supported (and indeed it doesn't seem to work).

Physically I have Fa1 from core-1 into a port on an adjacent switch. Fa1 from core-2 also goes into a port on that adjacent switch. Both are in my management VLAN, whose SVIs are on the cores themselves.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4500X EtherChannel Symmetric Load Balancing

May 8, 2013

I have probem with symmetric load balancig, in case when both ends of ether channel are on the sam switch (we are using VLAN translation). We need to create L2 port channel with both ends on same switch (Cisco WS-C4500X-24X-ES), for example:Po1 – Gi0/1, Gi0/3 (one end of port channel )Po2 – Gi0/2, Gi0/4 (other end of port channel)On ports in Po2 we will configure VLAN mapping. My question is what is the best ether-channel load-balancing scheme with wich we can accomplish full symmetry in both directions? For example, if traffic in one direction goes through Gi0/1 (member of Po1), in other direction also must go through Gi0/1. This is required because we need to connect four appliances for DPI (they are full L2 transparent) and traffic through each appliance need to be symmetric.

I can set-up src-ip, dst-ip, src-dst-ip etc. load balancing, but, actually I need src-ip on Po1 and dst-ip on Po2. Is there any way to set up different load balancing mechanism for different ether channel on same switch (4500X).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750G Setup - Multicast Traffic Across Link

Jan 12, 2012

I am having trouble getting some multicast traffic across a link.  I have a 3750G setup, with IP routing and IP multicast routing, between two laptops.  This will eventually sit between two networks that cannot be physically connected to each other for security reasons.  I have static joins on the ports but cannot see the multicast traffic on the receiver.  I am attaching the latest config.  The sender(10.10.4.2) sits on gi1/0/24 and the receiver(10.10.3.2) sits on gi1/0/1.  I am using VLC to test this and it will connect if I point the receiver to the address of the sender, but will not receive any multicast.  The multicast traffic is not making it to the 10.10.3 side, I used wire shark to verify that it was not making it across.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: VTP Traffic Not Seen On SPAN Port On 3750

Dec 12, 2011

Been dealing with a strange problem for several days now.  It started out with a problem that I thought was VTP related but ended up being something else.  I setup a span port on a 3750 that I am connected to that was mirroring the trunk connection coming into the switch.

Never saw an VTP traffic come across the connection but doing a sh vtp status indicated the traffic was arriving and getting processed.  When I found some debug commands (debug sw-lan vtp), I was also able to see the packets go between switches.  Seeing this issue concerns me that there is other traffic that isnt showing up during a span session.

I know that doing a span on a switch, especially using a trunk port as a source, isnt a good idea.  Since I didnt have a TAP at time, this was my only choice.  I have since borrowed a NetOptics TP-CU3 tap from a good friend and was able to confirm the VTP traffic was going across the trunk connection between switches.

All of my 3750's are running 12.2.55.SE.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: ASA 5505 Dropping Port 443 Traffic?

May 10, 2012

Networking is not my gig, but it has to be at this very moment.  We have an ASA 5505. Let me explain what's going on.

On Tuesday I wanted to be able to use the ASDM since there is less room for error.  But we only had a console set up.  So I ran the following commands...

in ($config)
http      of course didn't do anything incomplete command
http 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.255        didn't anything incomplete command
http 192.168.200.254 255.255.255.255 inside

[Code]....

Everything started working after that.  Everything worked fine all of wednesday and thursday.  Then this morning it stopped processing again.  When I traceroute it gets to the machine that is hooked up to the console and stops.  So I'm guessing its actually getting to the ASA router and being swallowed up again...
