Cisco Firewall :: PIX 515E HSRP Gateway Failover Not Working

Feb 12, 2012

Turned up a new colo service last week using some PIX 515E firewalls and two Cat 2950 series switches. I have attached a diagram of the layout which I have used elsewhere with good success. Basically I have two switches connected together via port channel (2 ports). The colo facility gives me two HSRP enabled links, of which I plug one into switch A and the other in switch B. The PIxes are a failover pair with the primary plugged into the same switch A as the primary HSRP link. The backup PIX is plugged into the backup switch where the backup HSRP link is. When I unplug the primary HSRP link the PIX can ping the HSRP gateway still, but nothing beyond that. Nothing gets it to work until I plug the link back in.

The only thing I could see that might cause an issue is the 'ip verify reverse-path' command on the PIXes. But even the switches cannot ping out beyond the HSRP gateway. Just seems like all inbound routing stops. I am not sure what the colo facility has going on their side but it seems like they are using just some Cisco 6509s and doing HSRP between them. Seems pretty simple but so far this is proving un-usable as is.

The PIX BTW just uses a default route to the HSRP gateway.

Cisco :: 4506 - Endhosts Don't Appear In User Tracking For LMS 4.0

I have a problem about user tracking for LMS 4.0.

For example:Switch 4506 send the endhosts for every VLAN that it has configured, except for one, but I can see that VLAN is configured over the switch.

are there problems directly with the connected endhosts over this VLAN or is it a problem about configuration for user tracking settings ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: PXE Failing With DHCP On 4506?

Jun 11, 2012

We are attempting to PXE boot from clients obtaining their DHCP lease information from DHCP pools configured on our 4506.  The PXE server, and the client are configured in separate VLANs.  We have configured option 66 to point to the PXE server IP address, and the bootfile option to point to the PXE boot configuration filename.  On the client side SVI, we also have configured the ip helper-address command to point to the PXE server (which also acts as another DHCP server for redundancy).

The PXE boot continuously fails stating it is unable to find the configuration file.  If we remove the DHCP pool from the 4506, and allow the client to receive their DHCP lease info from the secondary server (Windows 2k8 - same server as PXE server), they PXE boot with no issues.

We have no problem obtaining DHCP info, just completion of the PXE process.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4506 Switch Is Not Booting With New IOS

Yesterday I've faced a Problem that is not letting me boot with the new IOS.

Actually I'm planning upgrade IOS which supports SSH. As part of plan I've downloaded the new IOS image and uploaded via TFTP server to the switch.

After uploading to the switch. I've verified image and MD5 hash also. Everthing is fine. Then after I set the boot variable for the newly uploaded Image.

When I'm rebooting the Device it is not taking the new IOS. It's booting with the OLD image. Even It's not showing any error message while rebooting (ACTIVITY FILE ATTACHED FOR YOUR REFERENCE) I can't take risk by deleting the old IOS.

Cisco WAN :: 4506 / 2 WAN Links With EIGRP Failover If Primary Fails

Jul 26, 2012

I have a remote site with 2 WAN links.Link 1 MPLS with telecom provider managing the PE and advertising EIGRP routes to my switch(3750-E stack).Link 2 Directly connected to core site switch (4506) and advertising EIGRP routes.

It looks like this:

-------- Provider MPLS Cloud ------- GI2/0/1Remote Site (3750-E Stack)
Core Site Switch(4506)----
gi4/2------------------------------------------------ GI1/0/1Remote Site (3750-E Stack)

When both links are up MPLS is disrupted from other sites (that have MPLS only) to the core site.  I was unable to get a route list to see what exactly was going on before shutting the directly connected link down. What i'd like to have is:Use MPLS as my primary link as it is fully meshed with all my remote sites (and not just the core) and have the directly connected link as my failover in case of issues with the primary. I assumed putting a delay 1000 on the directly connected link at the remote site would have been enough but it looks like both were active and leaking routes all over the place Is there a way to set this up that the MPLS link is favoured and if it loses routes to that specific remote site it would failover to the directly connected link?

Here is my current configuration for EIGRP on the remote and Core sites:

Remote 3750-E
router eigrp 100
redistribute connected
redistribute static
passive-interface default
no passive-interface GigabitEthernet1/0/1

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 4506 Choosing Appropriate SFPs

Mar 25, 2013

My inherited network has a Cisco Catalyst 4506 with a WS-X4124FX–MT fiber card that connects to twelve Cisco 2950 switches over 62.5 micron multimode fiber at 100 Mbps. I do not know my run lengths (or even where the conduits run), but the furthest switches are well over a thousand feet from the server room. Any appropriate test equipment to provide this information soon.

We are looking at upgrading the main switch to a Catalyst WS-C4507+E with two WS-X4712-SFP+E cards and the closets to Cisco 2960S-48TD-L switches. Assuming this is a reasonable move, my question is about choosing the appropriate SFP’s for our current and future needs.

I am aware that 62.5 micron multimode fiber is the least favorable for extended lengths, but I will not be in a position to replace it for at least a year. If I purchase 10 Gbps modules, like the SFP-10G-SR or SFP-10G-LRM, can they “throttle down”, either automatically or by setting a parameter, to communicate at slower speeds over distances that exceed their 10 Gbps maximum link lengths on multimode fiber?
