Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - WLC Redundancy - Disaster Recovery?
Mar 14, 2013
My questions is in relation to disaster recovery, for wireless. We have our main data center, in the US, with two 5508 controllers. We have a DR location, in Europe, with two 5508 controller. We're upgrading our 5508's to the 7.4 code, so that we can take advantage of the RP port for our controllers. With that said, is there a way to make the US and Europe controllers redundant?
If there's a disaster, in the US, would the AP licensing, and AP's attach to the European controllers? Our AP's are set up with HA. I'm more concerned about the licensing flipping over to the DR controllers. I've tried researching this topic, and can't really find anything on it.

We are setting up a disaster recovery site which will host redundant copies of our servers and critical data in Kansas City. In the case of a disaster, our headquarters site would be totally gone.
Currently we have 7 branch offices that communicate to our HQ via VPN tunnels (either over an Internet circuit, or over a Cox Communications Ethernet WAN circuit). The branch sites each have a 2821 Cisco ISR Router. At the headquarters and at the DR site, we use a Cisco ASA 5510 to terminate the VPN tunnels and do all of our backbone routing. Routing on the ASA and on the branch routers is all static, using a routing protocol would be a nice upgrade in the future..? We use lan-2-lan IPSEC VPN tunnels, no GRE/VPN is in use because the ASA does not terminate it. What is the best way to setup my branch routers to automatically or manually fail-over to connect to a different ASA at the DR site?
Also, if my Headquarters site is still up, but either my Internet circuit or the Cox ethernet circuit at the headquarters goes down. How can I re-route all traffic in a loop back to the headquarters over the one good remaining circuit?
Is there a better way to do what I want to accomplish? BGP is not an option at this point due to its complexity.

We have to make disaster recovery site EasyVPN tunnels on Cisco 5505 ASA firewalls. Now there is only one main site and 3 remote sites. For DR we have to use the same subnet as it is on the main site because the Vmware virtual machines will be replicated to DR.For DR we are using Double Take software. What is the best solution for this? I think that we could use Destination NAT on ASAs. The other sites (HQ and remote) will se only the NAT address of theDR and not the real one which is the same as on the main site.We are using IPSec VPN? In packet-tracer on ASA I see that the packet is first NATed and then encrypted, so it should work, yes?

I have 2x WLC 5508 running version 7.2. 1st one is setup and running. My questions is: If I want to setup Active-Passive redundancy, do I need to manually setup the 2nd one exactly as the 1st one and put them in the same group? Or is it a way to copy all of the configs I made on the 1st one over to the 2nd one?

Our organization has multiple controllers at regional sites (one per region) & want to implement redundancy by placing one controller at headquarter's datacentre as a backup in case the site's failed. All our controllers are 5508 with 7.0.116.0 loaded I did a search around and found multiple documentations of how to do it but all related to creating a mobility group? Is it possbile to implement this scenario without creating mobility group ? (As in Cisco docs for software release 7.0 June 2010 - quoted "Centralized and regional controllers do not need to be in the same mobility group" )

Management purchased a HA package from Cisco consisting of 2 5508's with pre installed 500 users license on the Primary WLC and none on the secondary WLC. We have 5508's already so I am familiar with setting them up and so forth. What I am not familiar with is setting them up using HA for failover and license sharing. I've looked and looked and can't find documentation online showing how to set this up. I have found some but nothing that is complete. I have spent 2 days spinning my wheels.

I did a System Recovery after my computer had the virus that redirected me to a pop ups and different websites every time. After System Recovery I no longer have internet connection on the computer I used. All the other devices and computer can access my router but not the computer that I've used System Recovery on. I looked at Device Manager and all of my Networking Devices are working properly. I even looked at Wireless Zero Configuration and the Startup type is Automatic and the Service Status is Started.I go into Network Connections and my USB Adapter has an red X on it. I right clicked properties and looked at wireless networks and the preferred networks is grayed out[CODE]

I need to know if i can connect RAP to RAP and maintain redundancy with connection to WLC.
I have one 1552 with the gigabit ethernet connected to the gigabit ethernet to another device that has a point-to-point link with another device where have a ethernet connection with a switch in the same broadcast domain where i have my WLC.
Next to this 1552 i have another 1552 that have the same situation, both with omnidirectional antenna.
I would like to have a Mesh connection with these two 1552 in 5Ghz, because if some point-to-point link is down i need redundancy to the WLC and my network, because i have some clients connected in the 2.4 Ghz in both Access Points.

I am in process of replacing our 44xx controllers with new 55xx controllers. During the upgrade, I would like to add redundancy to our guest controllers that reside in the DMZ and had a question about regarding the setup.
If I remember correctly, I would place both guest controllers on the same mobilty group, and then add both of the controllers to the foreign controllers. The foreign controllers will form mobility with both anchors, but choose the one with the lowest MAC address as primary. On the foreign controller, if the lowest MAC addressed anchor controller does not respond, it will connect to the second controller. Is that still true? or is there a better way to go about it?
Also, I was wondering, do I need to put different guest network ranges on each of the Anchor controller? or can I use the same exact range on both anchor controller (since if a controller goes down, the clients would be reconnecting to the second controller anyways?)
Any best way to setup redundant Anchor (guest) controllers).

I have 5500 controller with firmware 7.0 installed from the factory. Due to some reasons, I understood that other existing wireless infrastructure runs on firmware 6.0, and hance i need to downgrade the 5500 series to 6.0 . During the bootup, i could see there is another image called backup recovery image, which is running on version 6.0. How can i reboot controller to use the older image , which is from backup recovery image. I couldnt find it in the configuration guide.

What consequences could i have if i install a WiSM-2 module into a pair of 6500 configured in VSS and another WiSM-2 module into other pair of 6500 configured in VSS for serving a 300 APs??...in this case, do i need to configure mobility groups for guarantee a high availability and also redundancy of controllers?Under the best practices, is much better having the two WiSM-2 modules into a single pair of 6500 configured in VSS??

I have a customer who is looking to add some redundancy to their internet connections. Currently we have an ASA 5510 for their firewall. I know that the Sonicwalls are capable of terminating multiple internet connections simultaneously for load balancing, redundancy, and for pushing different types of traffic out different connections. Traditionally the ASAs have not had that capability. But does anyone know if the newer revs (8.3 and I think 8.4 may be out?) will do that or anything similar? Not looking for a full BGP-style solution where the same address space is available via multiple links, but more just a solution where the internet for basic web browsing could fail over and load balance between two internet connections, each assigned to a different outside interface on the ASA.

I'm shortly going to move our stuff to a new data centre, where we have two network feeds - so there'll be two lengths of CAT 5 coming into the rack, for "first hop redundancy".I have something similar at our existing DC, but I'm simplifying the equation somewhat at the new DC, and using a simpler configuration that just uses two switches, rather than two switches and two routers. All of the servers will have public IP addresses. Now - the network guy at the new DC has confirmed that a simpler two switch configuration will work.

I have a question with regards to 6500 Redundancy. We currently have only one in our DC, it has 2 SUP 720s, two FWSMS, and multiple switchport blades. My question is is this fully redundant? and if not what is it that can fail, so I can look into adding that extra layer of redundancy.

I am a student pursuing a CCNA certification currently. I recently came across a lot of 3548 xl switches. They power up fine, post with out problem and load flash. The problem I am running into is that the console is password protected. I have found the password recovery procedure for this switch, but it requires the use of the mode button. I have tried this process several times and the flash file is loaded with the startup config file. How do I perform a password recovery on a switch with a broken mode button?
