D-Link DIR-655 :: Drops All Paths Except Active One
Apr 23, 2011
I purchased the Dir-655 yesterday. My home network was all gigabit except for my router which was working fine, but I wanted the whole network within my house to be at gigabit speed. I move a lot of big files around to my network storage device and wanted to speed that process up, which it has. After streaming a movie through the router out a hard wired port to my PC when I finished that movie I noticed that no other path through the router would work including Wi-FI, till I rebooted then they all worked again.
Last night watched a movie through the Wi-fi channel to my media PC in the basement and when the movie finished, no other port on the router worked until a reboot. In each case the channel/path in use continued to work although other paths were not working. It seems like a firmware/ buffer management issue.I made a couple changes. Enabled the Multicast option and turned of QOS.Failed again but not under the same conditions as before so I just turned off the Defragmentation option, I forget exactly how it was labeled.

I have a pair of ASA 5520s operating in failover pair as active/standby, having two contexts on them. I am planning to share the load and make it active/active making first context active on the primary unit and second context active on the secondary unit. My question is if this will disrupt any connectivity thru these firewalls when I do "no failover" on the active/standby and assign the contexts to different failover groups and enable the failover back.

I have a local DSL line in our remote office. We are connecting a microwave antennae that carries our main office internet to the remote office.I want to be able to connect both paths to a Layer 3 switch and route traffic through the main office with the router connected to the DSL as a fail-over solution.I would really like to stick with HP Procurve's if possible.

I look after 5 sites in total. All sites are connected together via MPLS. Two of the sites, HQ1 and HQ2 are also connected together via 1Gb Metro so traffic is just switched between the 2 networks.EIGRP is fed into BGP to pass the routes between the sites with all sites in the same EIGRP AS.
All sites are configured with the same AS number (55555) and connect into the same service provider network so each site is connecting to a neighbor in the same AS (444).
I want all incoming traffic from the 3 sites to come in through HQ1 always. Can I influence the service provider's network to make sure this happens? Is this done via "set local-preference 20" on my side or do I have to get the service provider to make changes on their side too.

I've recently switched to an ASA 5510 on 8.4(3) coming from a Checkpoint NGX platform (let's say fairly quickly and without much warning ). I have a couple questions and they're kind of similar so I'll post them up. I've read docs about regex and creating them both via command line and ASDM, but the examples always seem to include info I don't need or honestly something I don't understand yet (mainly related to defining classinspect maps). If someone could provide a simple example of how to do these in ASDM that would be useful in understanding how regular expressions are properly configured. So here we go.
I know this is basic but I need to make sure I understand this properly - I have a single web server (so this won't be a global policy) where I need to allow access to a specific URL pathfile and that's it. So we'll call it est estfile.doc. Any other access to any other path should be dropped. What's the best way to do this in ASDM (6.4)? I think if I saw a basic example for this I could figure out next few questions but I'll post them as well just in case.
I have another single public web server (again this won't be a global policy) where I'd like to specify blocking file types, like .php, .exe., etc... again a basic example would be great.
Lastly, and this is kind of related, but we have a single office/domain and sometimes we get spam from forged addresses appearing to be from our domain. On Checkpoint I used to use its built-in SMTP security server and could define if it received mail from *@mydomain.com to drop it because we would never receive mail externally from our own domain name. I saw something similar with ESMTP in ASDM and it looks kind of like how you set up the URL access mentioned above. Can I configure this in ASDM as well, and if so how?

I have two offices in rural area with a quite distance between them. Offices are connected with private wireless 100Mbps and cooper 100Mbps links provided by different ISP. Wireless connections are delivered as a private L3 Ethernet link but cooper as private L2 Ethernet trunk link. In both offices I have Cisco 3750 L3 switches. I would like to use both link (equal-cost paths) in load balanced configuration but not sure how. Both switches running EIGRP. Asymmetric routing is not an option. Per-destination load-balancing or something else?

I have a query on how the 6500s running in VSS mode would route the traffic over an OSPF environment where it has leant about two equal cost paths, but one via the 2nd chassis.Proposed setup - 2 6509s running in VSS. Switch-1 in VSS has a layer 3 connection (via a LES circuit) to one of a pair of Nexus 7Ks at another office. Switch-2 in the VSS has another layer 3 connection (via LES by another provider) to the other N7K at the other office. The L3 connections would use /30 ranges and allow each Nexus to form an ospf neighbour relationship with the VSS. We want to keep both offices environments separate so although we do have L2 circuits we're using these to provide L3 connectivity between sites & exchange routing info via them using ospf.
Each Nexus will advertise all the directly connected networks it knows about to the 6509s running in VSS. Thus I couldn't figure out if for example we have users/servers behind our VSS 6509s, these would need to go via their default gateway to get to a network located off the LAN, the default gw ip in VSS setup exisits on the control plane on switch-1 (in normal operation). Then to get to a network that is located off the Nexuses at the other site it would have 2 equal cost paths to it, however one of these paths would be via the VSL link and off the switch-2 chassis. I wasn't therefore sure if we'd actually ever see any transmit traffic via the 2nd L3 connection because I have a funny feeling that I've read the VSS always choses the local chassis egress rather than going via the VSL to use another port...
All of the above is theorectical at the moment as currently both circuits are connected to a single Nexus/6509 chassis however for improved resilence I want to move one of the circuits to be physically attached to the other Nexus & 6509 chasis at each site but I wasn't then sure how the traffic flows would be affected.

I am looking at deploying a pair of 5585X's in an active/active multiple context state. I am creating Mulitple contexts that need to be able to route to each other. I was going to deploy a type of Gateway context that has a shared interface to all of the other contexts, instead of sharing interfaces directly between the contexts, i beleive this will work as basically i am just cascadng the contexts and sharing interfaces.
The main problem i have come across, is that if i deploy active/active across two appliances using 2 failover groups i can not see a way to route between them, for example.
I have Context 1, Context 2 and Context GW A including the shared interfaces of Con1 and Con2 in failover group 1 on appliance A with the respective standbys on Appliance 2. I have Context 2, Context 4 and Context GW B including the shared interfaces of Con 3 and Con 4 in failover group 2 on appliance B with the respective standbys on Appliance 1.
I need to be able to route traffic between Context GW A and GW B so that the contexts can communicate in normal operation and in failover. I do not beleive that I can share an interface between contexts in two separate failover groups and to be honest without adding a L3 device between the appliances i am not sure if this is possible.

I have an ASA5520 in location A with an ISP connection and a matching ASA5520 in location B with a separate ISP connection. We have fiber connecting the two locations and vlans passing back and forth so I will be able to configure the failover via a vlan as well as extend the ISP's to each location via vlans. The Active/Active configuration with the multiple security contexts does not seem to be an issue but how is a redundant ISP configured in this mode?We want to have context A using the ASA in location A with ISP1 as the primary and failing over to ISP 2 in locaiton B We also want to have context B using the ASA in location B with ISP 2 as the primary and failing over to ISP1 in location A Would route tracking provide the desired result? Is there a better option?

The 6509 Series Switches support the scenario VSS Active-Active Chassis, I would like to setup both switch's as one virtual switch but working at the same time, not with Active - Stand By Chassis.
My plans it to create PortChannel accross both Switches 6509 in order to have 2 links one connected to one slot/switch and the other connected to slot/switch in the second 6509 for servers redundancy.

I am planning to use PBR and NAT with route maps. any documents or refrences are provided.

I have 2 asa 5520 firewalls including and 1 AIP-SSM-10 module in each of them. the configuration is set using active/active failover and context mode.
Both of them run individualy the IPS module. The IPS is configured using inline mode and fail-open option. However when one of the module fails and the state is changing from up to init or anything else making the IPS to fail then failover is detected and ASA consider it as failover and bounce context to the other unit.
IPS soft is 6.0(4) and ASA soft is 8.0(3)
I have checked cisco doc and it is confusing to me. it says: "The AIP-SSM does not participate in stateful failover if stateful failover is configured on the ASA failover pair." but it really does participate. Running is not really an option because of production network impact matter..

how the Nexus 5500s work ?currently we have two 6513 Core switches 6513-1 and 6513-2 running HSRP and RSTP. 6513-1 is currently the Root Bridge, 6513-2 is setup as our secondary root. We also have two 5548UPs setup with a peerlink between them. Picture attached. "Current Setup.jpg"
There is a 20gig port channel between the 6513s and also a 20gig port channel(peer link) between the 5548s. 5548-1 has a 10g fiber running back to 6513-1 and 5548-2 has a 10g fiber running back to 6513-2. Currently now Spanning tree is blocking the link from 6513-2 going to 5548-2 which is what we expect. We were working on moving some things to different racks the other day and moved switch 5548-2 to another rack and brought it back online without the peerlink fiber connected. We started to have issues and tried to plug the peer link back up, but still continued to have issues. We started to troubleshoot and noticed that both 5548s were acting like the master of the VPC domain and was not letting traffic pass accross the Peer Link. We then rebooted the 5548-2 with the thought that it would come back up as the secondary in the VPC domain. When it finally finished booting back up it then caused a huge loop in our network accross both uplinks to the 6513s and the 5548s peer link which in turn took our network down. Spanning tree did not work like it was suppose to and block the port going from 6513-2 to 5548-2 in time.
My thought was this didn't seem like a good setup. I went to the drawing board and decided we needed to have an uplink from both 5548-1 and 5548-2 going to 6513-1 setup as a port channel/VPC and also a uplink from 5548-1 and 5548-2 going to 6513-2 setup as a port channel/VPC. Picture Attached. "NewSetup.jpg" We are also planning on buying a "2K-C2224TP-1GE" to hang off the 5548s to use for ethernet.
how the Nexus 5ks work and haven't done a lot of research on them. Would this not be a better setup since both switches will have an active link to the root bridge? The links from the 5548s going to 6513-2 should always be in a block state until we loose both uplinks to 6513-1 or the entire switch itself correct? Also how will the 5548s reactive if I was to loose the Peer link fiber? Will they continue to work as normal? When it looses this Peer Link does it suspend all the VPCs for the servers on the secondary switch in the Domain so the network doesn't get confused on which link to send traffic up since there isn't a peer link active or is this not the case? Also with the peer link down will the 6513-1 know which 5548 to send the traffic to if there is only 1 device (not setup in a VPC) on one of the 5548s? What are your recommendations/best practice on the setup for the 2k?

I have the A1 version. I originally bought it and used it for a few months. I was very disappointed with the performance and went back to my Linksys WRT54G (running DD-WRT).
I recently decided to try it again. I upgraded to firmware 1.13. It worked pretty well for a week or so but now I am considering going back to my Linksys again. I keep losing my internet connectivity. The signal can be strong but internet becomes unavailable. Sometimes, just waiting it out works. Sometimes, disconnecting and re-connecting works. Sometimes, a reboot of the router works. Sometimes, nothing seems to work until it is good and ready to work. Sometimes, I cannot access the internet on my computer but my girlfriend still can. Sometimes, neither of us can connect.
I want to use it because I want the wireless-N speed to transfer files to my media center (and I paid a lot of money for it!) but the aggravation is getting to be too much.
There seems to be some correlation between visibility of my neighbors' networks and the connectivity issues but I could not swear to that. This is amazing to me because my neighbors are pretty far away and I can barely get the DIR-825 signal from my basement to my second floor.

I have a DIR-615, hardware version: C1, firmware version 3.12NA and my issue is that it keeps dropping my VPN connection after 12 minutes. Sometimes it'll go longer than 12 minutes but on average right at 12 minutes of my connection, it drops. This happens whether I'm using the wireless or hard wired to the router. As a test, I ran a continuous ping on a computer on my internal network and also to a computer on my corporate network. When I'm VPN'd in, both pings are successful. Once the router kills my VPN session, the pings to my internal network are successful. So the router isn't rebooting or anything like that. My VPN session will automatically reconnect, but I'm stumped.

My Bandwidth provider told me that the only solution is that rate-limit will be increased. But it will be of Higher cost. But when it does this, i cannot even log into the Router. Its like it drops off the network completely.im still running FW 1.10, but im curious if this could be an outside attack as well. Its hard to get this info because i have to reset the router (ie unplug it) and that clears the log.. It also seems to reset the date/time as well.

I should start by saying I am no novice when it comes to networks but this router has been nothing but a issue since day one.
*The Setup - 2 wired PCS, 2 Wired Macs, 1 Wireless Iphone, 1 Wireless Ipad.
WPA2 Only / AES key, Channel 6, G/N only, Hidden SSID.
*The Problem - 95% of the time the wireless and wired is running fine. However, Sometimes randomly webpages on the computer will stop loading... but heres the kicker... other internet connected programs like Ventrilo, or torrents, or games will still be working and running from the net like there is no problem. When this happens the internet browsers on the macs and PCs will say page cannot be displayed instantly. Happens to all computers at the same time. After about 10min the webpages will load again. I have 16mbs internet and while this is happening my games and voice chat programs do not go up in ping at all.
I have turned off QoS since that made the most sence... but other then that I have no been able to figure it out. I even turned off wireless while it was happening and it still didnt fix it. A sure fire way to fix it is to restart the router.
I am 100% stumped. Do I just have a bad out of the box router? it is only 2 weeks old.

I have a new DIR-655: H/W Ver. B1; F/W Ver. 2.00 NA? It is solid as a rock to my wired computers, but the Internet connection (not the wireless signal) to my wireless devices (laptops and smart phones) occasionally drops out for several minutes, many times each day. It is not necessary to reset my router to reconnect; after a while wireless Internet returns on its own. I upgraded from another D-Link router and never had this problem. In my judgment the problem appears to be the router. why the wireless Internet connection might disappear and then reestablish itself?I used an app on my smart phone to select Channel 11. No neighbors have routers close to this channel. My cordless phones are DECT (1.9 MHz). My microwave oven does not cause this dropout.
The DIR-655 wireless settings are pretty standard:
- WPA personal security mode
- WPA mode is Auto (WPA or WPA2)
- Cipher is TKIP and AES
- Group key update interval is 3600 seconds
- 802.11 mode is mixed n and g
When this wireless Internet connection dropout occurs, the router's signal strength does not decrease; the Internet connection just disappears. Time after time I have confirmed that the integrity of the Internet connection remains solid on my wired computers and disappears only from my laptops and smart phones.I have checked the wireless spectrum when the wireless Internet connection disappears. There is no other signal, e.g., no neighbor's router on my channel (11), and the strength remains at 5 bars.
