D-Link DIR-655 :: Local Names Don't Resolve On New Cascaded
Jul 15, 2011
1. I have a DSL modem + wireless + router
2. I have a Vonage phone that taps into one of the LAN ports
3. I have DIR 655 router that taps into one of the LAN ports
4. I have NAS that taps into one of the DIR 655 LAN ports
5. I have Printer that taps into one of the DIR 655 LAN ports
6. I have a BD Player that connects to DIR 655 through wireless.
All my components that are tied to DIR-655 resolve through IP address. I would like to have the resolution through host name as it works with my first router (DSL Modem / Router). Identifying components with IP address is not only inconvinient in terms of reading / recognizing my components but ther could be other issues. I am not very techie on the networking side but I do have some basic knowledge.

where the host names do not properly resolve with the right ip address.Example, I ping a host name, it gives me an IP, but when I VNC into the workstation, it is a totally different host.

How to configure ASA 5520 to resolve names in ASA's. We are currently using ASDM to configure network objects with the hostnames in the internet and then specifying the IP address . But this is done manually. Is there a different way of setting it up on ASA. Also when getting reports from ASA, we see the IP's but is there a way that we could add an identity to the IP's (reverse lookup)

I am running a Windows Home Server machine called "mserver" that has an IP address supplied via DHCP.There is also a local webserver running on port 8089 that I use to access media from several devices (Android Phone, Blackberry Playbook & HP Touchpad...i.e. not Microsoft). When I had the BT Homehub3 in use I could access the webserver via http://mserver:8089 and it would be loaded on all devices. With the WDR3600 used in place of the Homehub3 it cannot resolve mserver into a local IP address on a non windows device. I can access it via http://192.168.0.xxx:8089 so the route is there.Does the WDR3600 have any local DNS resolution? I repeat the BT HomeHub3 CAN do this, so why can't the TP-LINK?
P.S. I have tried :-
Disabling hardware NAT
Turning off UPNP & Port Forwarding
Restoring to factory default
Disabling all ALG's in security

i'm trying to setup a local DNS server to manage small office local-only domain names for our servers. i have the DNS working properly (resolving local machines and using the ISP dns if it can't). so i put the DNS server ip into the "Static DNS 1" field of the router settings. the other 2 static dns fields are empty.the problem is that the router is still using the ISP dns server as the primary and my local dns server as the secondary. i verify this in two places. first, if i go to the "status" tab, DNS 1 shows the ISP server while DNS 2 shows my local DNS server. secondly, if i connect to the wireless device with a linux-based machine, the /etc/resolv.conf file shows the nameserver ips in the same incorrect order.

My Belkin router has an option to set a local domain name, which, I suspect, allows me to address hosts within my own network using this domain. By default, this is set to be "Belkin". Is it possible to call hosts within my network like this, e.g. ping foobar.Belkin instead of ping 192.168.2.4? The thing is, my routers internal page shows all set host names (so dh client seems to work) and the router itself is reachable as router.Belkin, but no other hosts are. My problem here is that the router knows each hosts name, but the hosts don't know each others name. How can I fix that?
Note: Nmap showed that port udp/53 for DNS is open on my router, but I can't find any way to configure it on the Web-interface.
Add:// It's a "Belkin F7D3302 v1"

I have a 2911 router inside our network with both DHCP and DNS enabled. Everything works fine except since we use this router we are not being able to go to the network neighbourhood in Windows and look up machines by name (or typing \diskstation for example). Connecting by IP works fine but not by local machine names.

I ran into a very interesting problem that occurred today and I'm trying to figure out why it happened. If it was one ASA 5505 that just required the reboot, then I'd have just chalked it up to a glitch, but when we built a new AD/ DNS server on the main network at the main site and changed the 3 Remote site ASAs to point to the new DNS server in the DHCPD options, none of them could ping any local host names to the DNS server at the main site they were now pointing too, but external host names { URL} all translated and pinged fine.
From a laptop on one of the remote sites, we could ping the new AD/DNS server(192.168.0.3) and the old AD/DNS server(192.168.0.2) and everything else at the main site, and telnet to port 53 showed successful across the Easy VPN from the Remote site to the new server at the main site. When wire shark was added to the new DNS server at the main site, the DNS request and replies for {URL}, for example, came and worked fine, but any requests for local resources never made it to the server from the remote sites.
A reboot of one of the Remote Site ASA's corrected the issue. Then I rebooted the other two remote site ASAs, and now DNS was working fine for everybody. I had also tried clearing the ARP cache on the ASAs before resorting to rebooting them. I also tried rebooting the laptop thinking the local DNS cache needed cleared before resorting to rebooting the ASAs. I'm struggling to understand why external, public host names made it through and resolved from the remote sites to the new server at the main site, but anything local failed before even reaching the new server(The new DNS server could resolve requests made by computers at the main site, but the remote sites that traverse the Easy VPN from the ASAs failed). The new AD/DNS server is the only server configured for DNS for all remote site computers.
Is any of this making sense? I'm wondering if clearing the x late or local host tables would have corrected it without having to reboot. I'm just trying to grasp the understanding here and figure out what happened.

I have a fixed external ip address.I have port forwarding setup for accessing a NAS inside my LAN, lets say port 12345.Now when I use my laptop outside my own LAN, e.g. 99.99.99.99:12345 resolves nicely to my NAS. But when I use the same 99.99.99.99:12345 inside my LAN, it does not resolve. Instead, it gives me a 'server takes too long to answer' error
I have also setup a virtual host to an ip cam inside my network. That one resolves just fine. I tried enabling remote management on the DIR-655 and also that works fine using 99.99.99.99:8888.When I replace the external ip address with the internal ip address of my NAS, thus bypassing port forwarding, it obviously also works ok.
Why the forwarded ports are not accessible when I use my own external fixed IP address? Does the DIR-655 treat it different than other external IP addresses?

I'm using MAC address filtering on my network, and have no problem adding new devices as and when we purchase them. However, a lot of these items such as smart phones with wi-fi, Kindles etc don't seem to have a name that identifies them on the device info page. All of our laptops and desktops are identified, but none of the phones etc. Is it possible to assign names to MAC addresses at all?

I successfully cascaded a WRT54gs V6 router to a LinksKey wired router LAN to LAN. My concern is I get a warning on my one computer saying it is an unsecured connection. I have not seen a way to go in and make any kind of security settings. Most of the files on my main computer which is connected via the wired router are labeled as private files.

i've connected LAN-to-LAN an E1200 to WRT54G to improve wireless coverage in the basement and, more importantly, in the can. the set up seems to work. i also have an airport express joined to the network. (the slaved router's ip is one more than the master and DHCP is off.)i'm still curious about some details of the setup for the slaved router:
-- should it have the same SSID and the master?
-- on the master router, i have WPA2 Personal and a MAC filter of allowed devices. do i need to duplicate those settings on the slave? will it obey the MAC filter and WPA2?
-- do all the routers need to be on the same channel?
-- do all the routers routers need to use the same broadband? the E1200 has N band i'd like to use with the G, if that's possible.
-- if all the routers are on the same channel and SSID, will their signals interfere with each other if they're too close?

My laptop is connected to a router via wifi but it keeps getting a DNS fault. I have another PC linked to the same router via WiFi and that works perfectly all the time. I have the same problem on both google chrome and IE browsers where I just get the message telling me that the DNS look up failed. My internet is still connected as I can dial into my remote CCTV cameras and I can ping website ip addresses. Most times I can just turn off my wireless adapter and turn it back on and it works for another hour or so. But sometimes it wont work all day, unless I start my laptop in safe mode, when it works everytime! I have flushed the DNS cache several times but to no avail.

My company recently purchased a custom domain name through In Motion Hosting (inmotionhosting.com) which has worked great up until today. As of this morning we are not able to view our webpage online (ronnysinc.com) or any inmotionhosting pages including our email accounts. However, we can view any other website and computers outside of our network seem to be able to view those pages without any problem. [code] As you can see it works fine with any other website such as google. My initial thought was it was being blocked by our firewall but when I log into the router I do not see any firewall settings that would create this block. I also tried resetting the router and flushing the DNS with no success.

I'm setting up a facility with many different computers where I don't have access to their hosts files. How would I map test.com to a local server without using the hosts file? Can this be done using a simple home router?
I'd like to be able to tell guests: "If you're on our wifi, you can just go to test.com to view our local website."I'd prefer to keep answers hardware-agnostic, I'm using a D-link DIR-655.
How can I map a domain name to an IP address and port?

I have been trying to connect to the Internet via a wireless connection but keep receiving the above error. None of the Windows solutions resolve the problem. On Google Chrome I see a screen saying 'This web page is not available', and receive 'Error 105: Unable to resolve the server's DNS address'. I cannot access Internet Explorer either. The strange this is that this problem only seems to occur with some wireless networks, as I can connect fine at home. In certain places, however, I am told that I am connected but that accss is 'Local Only', and I cannot open any browsers. I need the problem resolved as soon as possible as I cannot access the internet where I need it most.

This is Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.2 on Windows 2008 R2
As far as I understand it Fault Manager need to be able to do reverse lookup for ip adresses to show the correct name in the "device name" column. I have double and tripple checked and all devices that only is shown as an ip address do have a reverse in the dns used by the LMS server. The device is correctly registered and inventory have been run. If I hold the mouse pointer over the crosshair on the row of the offending device all info is shown including correct device name and fqdn.
The server is upgraded from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2 and we have the same problem before the upgrade.

I am unfortately the only IT staff now for 100 - 150 users in my organization besides a consultant who doesn't have an answer for this issue even though he sold us the hardware and environment. While I realize that this version of the Cisco VPN doesn't support Windows 7, we do have some Windows 7 PC's that have the software and work perfectly fine upon install. In this case, I am at a remote location with both a Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP1 computer. Both have the same Cisco client installed and connect to our ASA5520. I cannot get DNS resolution out of this computer to any remote network resources or other domains such as cnn.com including localhost. Adding the entries manually in the hosts file does nothing and I even tried removing the VPN client, the network connections and components and even a manual winsock reset. I cannot resolve internet DNS but can ping all internal IP addresses. The Windows XP computer across from me has no issues. I am not going to update any VPN clients as we still don't have computers who are functional so I need to spend money where it counts before I upgrade computers and I cannot perform a downgrade on this model because the previous person who bought it didn't bother to check Windows XP compatibility before they installed them in 10+ communities.
Here's my IP config - FYI all works well when not connected to the VPN for general web domains.

I'm trying to have a website name: remote.test.com route to a local IP address but can't seem to get it working with this router. I don't want to use the windows hosts file as there are different Operating Systems that will connect and so routing though this D-Link is the only option. I have my wireless router connected to a separate network switch though it's WAN port where other computers sit as well as the target machine. I can use the internet as normal like this so things are working fine.

I am setting up a webserver to host our website on our local network. When I'm browsing from an external network, I can pull our website example.com and a sub domain test.example.com. However, when I'm browsing from our internal network, I cannot pull up test.example.com. I am not sure if this is due to propigation issues or what. When I do nslookup from external, it shows my network's main IP address. When I do it from local, it can't find an address and says non-existent domain.Should I have any problems connecting to my website if it is using my external IP address? Will this be a loopback problem? If so, how can I resolve this?

I am using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.06.0160 - and am having an issue connecting to my ASA 5510 via VPN. This issue is happening on 1 of our laptops. All other laptops connect just fine. So the problem is not in the ASA. I have double checked the client setup and config and it too is correct. The interesting thing is, we are connecting to an IP Address and not a host name.

I got a new TP-Link WR740N router and I'm having a problem with it. Everytime I enable security (WEP, WPA etc.) the signal on all notebooks will go "local access only" immediately, even if I use the right password. Router signal is always there, but Internet access will only be available if security is set to "unprotected" on the router setup. Funny thing is that my old router (Linksys WRT54) had WPA2 on and everything was ok.

This router was just purchased this past week. I have 1 laptop, 1 desktop, and 1 netbook that is connecting to this (along with various smartphones). Set it all up according to the booklet, and ran into some trouble. When connecting through wireless, I only have "Local only" on the older laptop and desktop PC, but full internet access through the smartphones and the netbook. But, when I connect through LAN with the laptop, I have internet connection (only through LAN, not wireless). I suspect this also occurs on the PC, but the two are no where near each other to attempt. I installed the latest firmware version to no avail, and had done a full reset on the router and reinstalled it.
