1. I have a DSL modem + wireless + router
2. I have a Vonage phone that taps into one of the LAN ports
3. I have DIR 655 router that taps into one of the LAN ports
4. I have NAS that taps into one of the DIR 655 LAN ports
5. I have Printer that taps into one of the DIR 655 LAN ports
6. I have a BD Player that connects to DIR 655 through wireless.
All my components that are tied to DIR-655 resolve through IP address. I would like to have the resolution through host name as it works with my first router (DSL Modem / Router). Identifying components with IP address is not only inconvinient in terms of reading / recognizing my components but ther could be other issues. I am not very techie on the networking side but I do have some basic knowledge.
How to configure ASA 5520 to resolve names in ASA's. We are currently using ASDM to configure network objects with the hostnames in the internet and then specifying the IP address . But this is done manually. Is there a different way of setting it up on ASA. Also when getting reports from ASA, we see the IP's but is there a way that we could add an identity to the IP's (reverse lookup)

Then the network admin me look up the switch port that the computer is located on and so on. So i find 3 of the computers im looking for and when i get on the computer and look up the name but it does not match the name given to me. So i do an ipconfig /all and see that the computer has the right IP address and MAC address but not the same name. So my main question is, are these computers one in the same or is something messed up?

View 7 Replies View RelatedAnyway, I am looking for a way to discover host names of Apple devices (namely iPods and iPhones) that are on our network. I've tried a number of programs like Nmap, Advanced IP Scanner, and LanSpy to name a few. All of them will report back the MAC address with no problem but no dice on resolving the host name.
My goal is to use the host name to identify the device, and ultimately the person with the device. Any thoughts on how I can go about this? Is there a setting in Nmap I'm missing or perhaps a better program to use?
I'm having with my VPN Server on my Cisco 2621xm.
I started by creating a VPN - everything worked great. I assigned the DNS Servers, Domain name, WINS Server so when I connect I'm able to resolve local hostnames on the network with no problem, however, I had no internet access... I then set up a split tunnel access list. Since I've set that up, I'm now able to ping internet based addresses url... but no longer able to resolve internal host names. I can ping the ip addresses, just name resolution no longer works. [code]
I am able to connect to corporate VPN with no issues when connecting directly to ISP modem. When I try to complete the same VPN connection via a Wireless Router (Linksys WRT160Nv3) i get the following message: "Network error. Unable to look up host names"I have tried connecting and it will initially connect, but 15-30 seconds it will drop and connection can't be re-established.Is there a setting on the Linksys WRT160Nv3 that needs to be changed?
View 3 Replies View Related I ran into a very interesting problem that occurred today and I'm trying to figure out why it happened. If it was one ASA 5505 that just required the reboot, then I'd have just chalked it up to a glitch, but when we built a new AD/ DNS server on the main network at the main site and changed the 3 Remote site ASAs to point to the new DNS server in the DHCPD options, none of them could ping any local host names to the DNS server at the main site they were now pointing too, but external host names { URL} all translated and pinged fine.
From a laptop on one of the remote sites, we could ping the new AD/DNS server(192.168.0.3) and the old AD/DNS server(192.168.0.2) and everything else at the main site, and telnet to port 53 showed successful across the Easy VPN from the Remote site to the new server at the main site. When wire shark was added to the new DNS server at the main site, the DNS request and replies for {URL}, for example, came and worked fine, but any requests for local resources never made it to the server from the remote sites.
A reboot of one of the Remote Site ASA's corrected the issue. Then I rebooted the other two remote site ASAs, and now DNS was working fine for everybody. I had also tried clearing the ARP cache on the ASAs before resorting to rebooting them. I also tried rebooting the laptop thinking the local DNS cache needed cleared before resorting to rebooting the ASAs. I'm struggling to understand why external, public host names made it through and resolved from the remote sites to the new server at the main site, but anything local failed before even reaching the new server(The new DNS server could resolve requests made by computers at the main site, but the remote sites that traverse the Easy VPN from the ASAs failed). The new AD/DNS server is the only server configured for DNS for all remote site computers.
Is any of this making sense? I'm wondering if clearing the x late or local host tables would have corrected it without having to reboot. I'm just trying to grasp the understanding here and figure out what happened.
I have been trying to connect to the Internet via a wireless connection but keep receiving the above error. None of the Windows solutions resolve the problem. On Google Chrome I see a screen saying 'This web page is not available', and receive 'Error 105: Unable to resolve the server's DNS address'. I cannot access Internet Explorer either. The strange this is that this problem only seems to occur with some wireless networks, as I can connect fine at home. In certain places, however, I am told that I am connected but that accss is 'Local Only', and I cannot open any browsers. I need the problem resolved as soon as possible as I cannot access the internet where I need it most.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a fixed external ip address.I have port forwarding setup for accessing a NAS inside my LAN, lets say port 12345.Now when I use my laptop outside my own LAN, e.g. 99.99.99.99:12345 resolves nicely to my NAS. But when I use the same 99.99.99.99:12345 inside my LAN, it does not resolve. Instead, it gives me a 'server takes too long to answer' error
I have also setup a virtual host to an ip cam inside my network. That one resolves just fine. I tried enabling remote management on the DIR-655 and also that works fine using 99.99.99.99:8888.When I replace the external ip address with the internal ip address of my NAS, thus bypassing port forwarding, it obviously also works ok.
Why the forwarded ports are not accessible when I use my own external fixed IP address? Does the DIR-655 treat it different than other external IP addresses?
I am using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.06.0160 - and am having an issue connecting to my ASA 5510 via VPN. This issue is happening on 1 of our laptops. All other laptops connect just fine. So the problem is not in the ASA. I have double checked the client setup and config and it too is correct. The interesting thing is, we are connecting to an IP Address and not a host name.

The device names of the on-line devices revert back to an IP address every day. From device management, I go in and change the display name and the host name from the IP address to an alphabetic host name. When I go back and look at it the next day, it has reverted to the IP address.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI replaced my old wireless router with a Cisco Linksys E4200, running firmware version 1.0.02 build 13 May 24, 2011. About once a minute the router sends an unsolicited DNS message to the IPV4 multicast address 01:00:5e:00:00:fb with a destination IP address of 224.0.0.251. The unsolicited message is a DNS response with source port 32784, transaction ID 0, flags 0x8400 (standard query response, no error), questions 0, answer RRs 2, authority RRs 0 and additional RRs 1. The two answers both relate to the router itself: one has Name Cisco18738.local, type A (host address), class 1 (IN), cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 4, and the address of the router. The other is the reverse of the same address. The additional record is for Cisco18738.local, type NSEC, class IN, cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 5, next domain name Cisco18738.local, RR type A (host address).
When my desktop computer receives these messages it logs an error, for example: "Jun 23 07:39:22 sauterws02 avahi-daemon[1067]: Received response from host 10.146.9.1 with invalid source port 32784 on interface 'eth0.0'" The 10.146.9.1 is the router's IP address. I also see these messages on the wireless link from my laptop.I suppose the E4200 is generating these DNS messages in a misguided attempt to make sure there is no old information about its name. Is there a way to turn them off? If not, is there a way to report this to Cisco as a bug?
The old syntax that I am much more familiar with has been deprecated. On older IOS it would have been something like static (inside, outside) tcp 209.114.146.122 14033 192.168.30.69 1433 netmask 255.255.255.255 Plus an extended ACL to allow the traffic.I am trying to create a Static PAT to allow a host address to access our Network through an ASA. I have external address 209.114.146.122 that I want to hit the external interface on an obscure port (say 14033) and translate that traffic to an internal host address on port 1433.
