D-Link DIR-655 :: Slow Wireless And Wired Speeds - N Devices?
Jan 5, 2013
Just bought a dir-655, set it up (all though the wizard wasn't working, it kept getting stuck on step 5 of 7) so I just configured everything manually.I'm getting 2.4 MB/s speeds wirelessly.I was expecting much better, my wireless g linksys router did just slightly lower than that. My xbox 360 can't even stream HD without buffering every few mins. It also will just stop, and be unable to see the media for a couple minutes (when doing HD).I have wireless setup as WPA2, and the devices I use wirelessly are N devices. I have the router setup to only use wireless N.

Router:Dir-655 (Hardware Ver B1;Firmware Ver 2.01Na)
Modem: Motrola SB6120
Cables: Cat 6
Machines: 1. XP SP3 w/d-link DGE-530T desktop; 2. XP Pro SP3 w/dlink DGE-530T desktop; 3. Win7 64 (Latest Drivers)
Problem is that the XP machines can download 25Mbsp on speedtest.net but the Win 7 only manages 5Mbps through dir-655 -- ALL WIRED CONNECTS!. Connect Win 7 directly to modem and d/l is 30Mbps 2 hour Netflex test of wireless indicates good performance. D-Link support had me going in circles for a while until I finally suggested that a firmware update was in order. They assured me that this had been id'd as a problem and that latest firmwire would certainly solve it. It did not.

I have recently had trouble with my wireless D-link WBR-1310 Router. Two days ago everything was working fine, my wireless connection from the router to my macbook was fine and the wired connection to my desktop pc was also fine. I went to bed and when I woke up the next day everything was still ok. About 3 hours after I had first turned on the PC that next day my wired connection started spiking and dropping connection frequently, maybe every 5-10 minutes or so. I play world of warcraft and I also use Mumble VoiP Program and my pings in both are over 800 constantly now making it impossible to stay connected to either program. Sometimes it will drop down to regular numbers (25-50ms, I play on eastern servers as I am in NY) but then rapidly jumps back up into the 1,000's. My wireless connection is still fine though nothing has happened to that, only my wired connection is messing up.
I've tried changing my speed and duplex settings on my onboard NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet which is what im using but it hasn't worked. When connecting directly through the modem the problem seems to stop so its definitely the router.

I'm having a problem where my connection speeds slow down on my iOS devices. I have a EA2700 router. I have PC hard wired into the router, which maintains steady speed test numbers when other devices slow down.i have another pc that connects wirelessly (2.4 only) that maintained speed white the other devices slowEd down. Both my iphone5 and new iPad would slow down. The quick fix wasto turn the wifi on the device off, then the speed would return when reconnected. Also clicking "renew lease" in the iPhone wireless settings seemed to correct the issue.I'm not sure if there is a setting on the iOS devices or the router I can change to stop this.

Set up my new E4200V2 last night, everything appeared to be working but while streaming videos over wired LAN I get short hiccups over wired. While streaming videos, a few second long pause is really, distracting, this is a deal breaker and my previous router (DIR-655) had no issue streaming any videos. The wiring has not changed, only the router.I set up a ping between two wired linux boxes, and get: [code]
Whoa, 10 ms over gigabit LAN. This is crazy, but doesn't tell us much. The 10 ms was one out of hundreds of pings, so its only intermittent. This might explain the hiccups, but this router doesn't appear to log anything, so its hard to say.Next was scp transfers, which never exceed 15MB/s, in either direction. For gigabit, wired LAN this is awful, with my previous DIR-655 I would get at the very least 40 MB/s, in all situations.Next up, iperf. I set up iperf on the two hosts, and iperf reports reasonable gigabit speeds. [code] Tonight I am thinking of reverting to an old firmware, doing a hard reset and seeing if it persists, and if no ideas come up in this forum, it is getting returned, 15MB/s over gigabit lan is terribly broken.

Why my E3200 is (for lack of a better word) "throttling" my internet speeds.I'm signed up for my ISP's 50Mbps data plan. When I hook up my laptop directly to the cable modem (via LAN cable), I see close to 50Mbps as the internet speed (measure via speedtest.net). When I hook up my router to the cable modem, and connect via LAN cable to the router, the internet speed comes down to around a maximum of 26Mbps. NOTE, that I am still talking about a wired connection and not a wireless access. Speed tests with the wireless access do yield the same results as well. To rule out the obvious, I've confirmed that there aren't any other devices on the network and no other bandwidth hogging applications running while I performed these tests.

Very slow transfer speeds problem with this router. When I put the router in the system, my transfer speeds drop from 12 Mbps to 3 Mbps. I've updated the firmware to the latest version but that doesn't work. The most frequent suggestion is to upgrade the firmware which I have already done.

I have tried 2 DIR-655 routers now, revision B1, firmware versions 2.04, 2.07, 2.08beta and a number of laptops and wireless mini pci-e nics and I simply CAN'T get faster than about 10 megabytes/sec transfer speed from a wireless laptop to a wired gigabit desktop.
Is this just simply a limitation of these routers? Can they simply not transfer data at decent speeds? I've seen real world transfer speeds near 12 megabytes/sec on a DIR-615 and I assumed the limiting factor there was the 100megabit wired connection.
I've spoken to a dozen different D-Link phone support workers

I'm currently subscribed to Comcast's 22/5 Internet service. Internet upload speeds on both wired and wireless are about the same at ~ 5 Mbps. Wireless download speeds range from .5-3 Mbps. Wired or Wireless, I receive LAN speeds of ~32 Mbps or 3-4 MB/s. The noticeable issue is wireless internet download speed. I have tried every configuration possible with my router, updated drivers on devices, firmware and tested everything I could on all PCs, and even used the XBOX 360's media extender network tuning feature as a tool in my investigation to find this bottleneck. All reports point to internet download speed. Again, general LAN and internet upload speeds relatively meet expectations. The wired download speeds are slow at times, but consistently meet expectations.
My current Setup:
Wifi
A4 1.33NA
WPA2 Only - Personal
802.11 Mode : 802.11n only
Channel Width : 40MHz

So I have installed my new E4200 version 1 and I am disappointed with the speeds. My computer has a wireless N card and gigabit Ethernet compatibility. I am currently getting a miserly 54 mbs wireless and 100 mbs on the wire (connected with cat6 all the way)... Anything I should try to get close to advertized speeds?

My Belkin F7D4301 Router has the fastest wireless speed of maybe 2MBps but wired with a cat5e cable to my asus laptop of almost 7MBps. I have a one smart TV, one blue ray, one roku, and a nexus 7 using the 2.4 channel.
My Wireless 2.4 settings are channel 11, Extension channel 7, Wireless mode N (have tried with just g and b, g, and n modes), Bandwidth 20/40, Protected mode on, QOS off.
I've talked to Belkin tech support, they are the ones who had me set up my 2.4 channel this way but my wireless speeds stay just under 2MBps, they just want to keep sending me the same model Router because they think each of the new ones they send me is defective.
Am I doing something wrong or is 2MBps the best wireless speed I'm going to get?

i have had a DIR-655 Rev. A router for years now and had no problems connecting my laptop to it well over 150m, the iproducts never got over 65m, i'm OK with that if they just won't but i would like to get there if possible. i went out and picked up a 2nd 655 (rev B) and flashed the bios up to the newest version 2.03NA and went in and mirrored all of the settings from the original router and then replaced the old router with the new one. the old router is not being used at this time though there are plans to use it as an access point later in another part of the house. i have updated the drivers for the wireless N card on my laptop (i can't remember the name of the adapter or the model, i'll provide that when i go home for lunch today). i've tried various settings for security, (i want to use WPA2 only, personal key, AES cipher, channel width 20/40 auto) i've even tried no security and it still won't connect over 65m.

I'm paying to get Download Speeds of 25Mbps from my cable provider.
If I plug my computer directly into my cable modem, I get 24.98 Mbps every time.
Using the same speed test, if I go through the DIR-655 I get rates from 2.92 to 10 Mbps.
I'm on Firmware 1.32NA. I'm ready to go out and buy a different brand Router.

I'm surprised to see speeds around 11MB on a gigabit LAN and the NAS is also gigabit. I've been reading that when people take the DLink router out of the loop that there speeds get upwards around 48Mb or so. Or if they add in a non DLink switch put the equipment on that leg with the switch.
Are there some tweaks in the 825 that could work for the LAN speed for this NAS? Seems odd to have to buy a new router or add in a switch to do what this should be doing already. This is going to be an issue for streaming movies and especially HD via WiFi across the LAN.
I would also like to do my data backups to the NAS but when they hit around 60Gb it would take a long time to do a backup.

We recently bought a home and just moved in. That being the case, we got a new ISP (Cincinnati Bell DSL). The service is advertised as "Up to 5Mbps."
My current equipment:
PC:
OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600
Other OS Description Not Available
[Code].....
So what can I do to achieve faster speeds? Am I limited by the hardware I have? My Dell is roughly 6 years old. Am I limited by Cincinnati Bell? Is it the location of the wireless router? Are there settings I can adjust to create a faster connection?

I had my Dir-655 router for over a year & this is is a first. My firmware is 1.21 & I only use my router for gaming when I'm not on my PC for home use. I have only one PC in the house that is not shared, I have also not downloaded any virus or maleware. So the past month I decided to buy a wired ethernet cord to connect to my gaming systems rather than using the wireless option to get an extra bit of speed. That has been working fine up till yesterday when all of a sudden my download speeds dropped from around 20Mb down to barely 1Mb down (I can't even get the speed test site to fully load anymore). The upload & ping remains unchanged though. Only my Download speed is being affected. This is both when I'm on the PC & when I'm online gaming.
I unplugged my D-Link router & plugged my modem directly to my PC & I got back the 20+Mb speed, so the modem or cable company are not at fault (I even called them to see if there were any problems on there end).
-I tried turning off my Firewall on my PC.
-Resetting & rebooting both my modem/router/PC.
-using different DNS numbers.
-using /flushdns.
-using /Iprenew.
-Messing around with my router configurations such as:
turning off QoS Engine.
turning off wireless.
turned of MAC filtering.
unchecked "Add DHCP Reservation".
unchecked SIP.
None of it worked. I'm still browsing at around 56k dial up speed for the past day+!I read up on the internet for similar problems, but the only solutions I saw was turning off the firewall on the PC, but that hasn't worked at all.

Ive had this 655 for about a year now and it has been rock solid. But, there has been one slight issue.
And and all wireless devices can see each other and all wired devices can see each other....but the wired cant see the wireless and vis versa.
The wireless devices (W7 and Vista laptops) can see the wired devices when they are plugged in. But my phone and Galaxy Tab can only see whatever wireless devices there are (cant be plugged in). Even my wired Samsung TV cant see the shares on the Tab or wireless laptops (and vis versa). So, its certainly not a firewall or OS config issue.
Now, I made sure they are all connecting via the main SSID and not the "isolated" Guest SSID....but its acting like the main SSID is isolated from the wired LAN somehow.
Firmware 1.34. IPs for the wired and wireless devices are all in the 1.2 - 1.50 range.

I originally installed my DIR-655 as a wireless access point, not using the wired ports at all, and it worked fine like this. Trouble with my trying to set up my Bell router/modem with port forwarding prompted me to change my configuration so my Bell router /modem is now only a modem, and I am using the DIR-655 as a wired as well as wireless router. I have a separate network server and so don't use the DHCP on the DIR-655, and I only use one port to connect to a separate gigabit switch that serves the network.
I am finding that the wireless connection works really well with the few wireless devices I have connected (mainly an apple tv, and a MAC book) but my wired connections to the internet "feel" slow, sometimes with a significant delay before links to sites are established. I click a link, and wait for several seconds before the site shows up in the browser; sometimes after that the same site seems to respond at normal speeds, other times there are added delays.
Is there something in the DIR-655 settings that would cause this? The wireless connections seem fine.
Should I be looking at a new router/modem (rather than separate boxes)? If so what would be the equivalent D-Link model?

Both computers can upload and download as expected from the internet. Transfers between the two computers though are slow. Both computers are loaded with Windows 7. Transferring files to or from the laptop transfers at 1.5MB/sec to 2 MB/sec.

All of a sudden my laptop, android phone and blu ray player (all wireless devices) can't communicate with my wired devices (marantz receiver and samsung tv). Everything still connects to the internet independently but i can't for instance play music from my wireless laptop to my wired marantz receiver. I had no trouble with this last week and didn't change anything (that I'm aware of) I did get Verizon to switch out my router but it didn't solve anything. My wife's computer also cannot connect to wired devices. Lastly, if I connect my laptop with via ethernet cable it sees wired devices fine. I tried shutting off windows firewall but didn't work. I have no other firewall/virus software installed. I can ping to all devices (wired and wireless) from my laptop.

I am currently using a DIR-655 for the home wireless network.DSL into a 2-Wire home portal (not wireless) and ethernet into the DIR-655.I need to connect a number of wired devices in a couple of different rooms. Some streaming HDTV content to other devices in other rooms. I'm thinking of the following:
-DIR-655 routing between the DSL subnet to the internet, the 2.4GHz wireless and a couple of wired devices.
-DAP-1522 routing between the 2.4GHz wireless, 5GHz wireless, and a few wired devices.
-DAP-1522 bridging between the 5GHz wireless and a few wired devices.
All devices will/may need internet access.HDTV content would be between wired devices and only over the 5GHz wireless (no HDTV to/from internet). Is the DAP-1522 the right device(s) for this?

My computer is hooked to a SB5120 cable modem which is also hooked to a wireless router (BEFW11S4). I switched plans not long ago, and I noticed recently that when other known users are using the internet, their wireless download speeds are shockingly low. (I'd download it at ~1MBps, other users will download it at ...~20 KBps alone) My network is secured with a WEP, and I certainly have no giant metal ball on top of my wireless router, what could cause such slow speeds?

I have 3 or 4 devices connected via a wireless connection, 2 of which are in the same room. Roughly a week ago, my desktop (Vista OS) started to suffer from severely reduced download speeds (5-30kb/s), while my laptop (also Vista OS) which is on the same wireless network continues to run at normal speeds (500kb/s-1mb/s).
I have tried a system restore, scanning for viruses, updating/disabling antivirus and firewalls, connecting directly to LAN, changed wireless interface speed from g to b to mixed, changed wireless channels from 1-6-11, nothing seems to work.
I have a Thomson TG782T router with a D-Link wireless card (which is rather old).

I recently moved to a new apartment to be closer to work and this apartment complex is only covered by what I was told is a wireless hotspot.Basically, a wireless devices connects to the SSID, logs in, and then you're set with the most pitiful internet still available. Now I was told I could pay $70 bucks to have these people (Onlyinternet.net by the way) install a device that would allow me to connect my desktop to the internet service. Wasn't thrilled about that. Its $40 a month, for a 1Mb connection so that wasn't going to happen anyway.Looked up internet connection sharing and had setup my laptop to use it with my desktop. My connection on my laptop has always had a very low signal; between one and two bars no matter where I'm at in my apartment. If I go outside it'll get about 4 bars but that is about it. The actual speeds listed on the Wireless Network Connection Status go from 1Mbps, 2Mpbs, 5.5Mpbs and 11Mbps. Never higher.Today I went and picked up a NETGEAR N300 wireless router. My hope was that the router might be able to pick up the wireless connection and I could just connect through my router instead of having to use my laptop. Apparently, this is not the case.I have to use my laptop act as a modem and have it plugged into the Internet port of the router and then my desktop connected to one of the LAN ports on the router. Is this setup better then using the internet connection sharing deal? Is there any other way of increasing my signal strength and network speeds?
