Apr 4, 2012I have 4 computers (3 laptops, 1 desktop) in a shared office. We get internet access using their wireless network. All works fine. However, I need to share a printer amongst all of the computers. The printer is LAN enabled and I would normally just put all the PCs on a hub, together with the printer and share it that way. BUT my question is can we access the internet using the wireless network and the printer using a separate wired network at the same time?

Oct 10, 2011I have been involved in the Networking of a museum with a set of "Show" computers which display video, and for this reason cannot have anti virus installed becuase of the performace hit, and also the risk of pop-ups on the videos. They do however need to be connected to the internet as some are interactive and allow people to send simple emails, and they all need to allow remote support when things go wrong.It seems the networking was not thought out very well initially, and there is a single wireless router which serves the staff and public on a secured wireless network, but also serves the "Show" machines via a wired connection from one of its ports, which then connects to a master switch which serves the show machines.Now the wired and wireless is on the same network, and everything shares the same IP subnet (192.168.1.xxx), and this is not a good situation in terms of the securuty of the show machines on the wired network. So I need to work out a way to totally separate the wireless network (which will be very prone to people opening viruses in their emails etc), from the wired network (which will be the show machines which wont be touched by anyone).
I want to achieve this in the simplest and easiest way, and have been reading about the possibility of setting up a second wired router behind the current wireless one, with a different subnet IP address, to which the "Show" machines could be connected. The WAN port on this second router would connect to a LAN port on the wireless router, and thus the show machines could get their internet, but separated from the dangerous wireless network.Does this sound like a sensible start? Will the fact that the wired router (and show machines) are on a completely different subnet to the wireless router (and wireless devices), mean that the wired network will be protected? Or do I need to do more? And is this likely to work?
Cannot Ping Computer On A Wireless Network From Wired Network
Jan 30, 2012My computer is a 32 bit, Win7 SP1 with Pentium Dual Core 2.6 Ghz and 2Gb of Ram on a wired network. My wife has a similar system using a wireless network. She can ping my IP Address, but I cannot ping hers. We both have full access to the Internet. We are using the same workgroup, and both computers have file and printer sharing enabled and IPv6 addresses and DNS server addresses selected automatically.The problem appears to be with my computer?

I have a router that will be used to allow open access to the internet without allowing direct access to the existing network, There is no ethernet connection in the area and this router was ree with limited features. So no Wifi as WAN I want to use the desktop's ethernet NIC to obtain a WAN connection. For now I can not setup a VLAN and must configure the two networks as poorly described. Sadly I am not familiar with bridging connections in XP and am unsure about specifics. Also, as a quick test, I bridged the connections and lost wireless connectivity.

I have an HP laptop that is running windows 7 that is wireless.When I look at network computers on the dell I get an error message that says that the computer is not accessible. The same thing happens when I try to log onto the desktop from the laptop. When I try to run the network wizard from the desktop, I see see connect to the internet, connect to a wireless router or access point, setup a dialup connection and connect to a workplace.None of them make sense but I tried connect to a wireless router and got a message that said to set it up manually or set up a flash drive, neither of which makes sense. May 23, 2012I have been having a heck of a time getting my gigabit network working off of either my new router, or 2 older ones. Since my house is wired with cat5 cables, I was thinking about putting an 8port router in my networking box that is tucked away in the corner of the house, and then using my new Dlink 857 router as just an access point in a more optimal location in the house.
My questions are as follows:
Would be slower for either the wireless internet speed or the speed of file transfers between the wired computers?
Would I be able to transfer files both ways from the NAS that would be hard wired to the 8-port router? Is there any benefit/disadvantage to my idea that I have not thought of? I know it is possible, but do I want to do it?

Jan 17, 2011I have two computers sharing files connected by a wired lan via an Ethernet card. Both are using XP home sp2 OS and neither of them had any Internet connection. I wanted to make one of them connect to a wireless printer so I added an Asus USB (wireless) dongle to that machine only.When first used the dongle sprang into life, connected to a wireless router in another part of the building (also mine, but nothing to do with this network) and downloaded a load of MS updates. Whilst an Internet connection was not really needed on that machine I thought 'all well and good', and proceeded to download MS Security Essentials onto that machine only. Once the printer software was installed on that computer it connected normally with the wireless printer and printed-out fine.It was only when I attempted to connect to the other computer via the hard-wired lan that I found that the connection between them was broken.

I am pretty sure that the range of the router for wireless will reach to workshop fine for ipad but if not I will need to put a wireless up there tooext kids have a laptop running windows 7 but kids being kids and having had problems with self control on net in past I want to be able to make sure that I can turn them off from net when needed because
1. I do not want them running me past the data limits imposed by cable company and
2. keep them from sites such as those which got them in trouble in the past (kids are older and bought laptop for selves and pop will not go along with me confiscating it if they abuse internet privileges

May 11, 2011I have a laptop running win xp. It was running fine this morning. I then brought it to a Honda dealer. The problem started there ...At first, I got a strong wi-fi signal but not network connection. I tried to repair (by right clicking on wireless network icon on the lower-right corner). The first time it seemed trying to do something but nothing worked. The 2nd time when I tried to run repair, the process hang and the machine could not be rebooted or shut off. I have to hold the power key for a few seconds to turn it off.Now, I am at home using another computer to post this message, which indicates my home lan and my router are working fine. But my laptop still has no connections - neither wired or wireless

Due to the structure itself (near 2 ft thick walls - masonry) the wireless from the base router reaches only a short distance. I would like to "extend" the wireless reach using those 3 existing runs. May 7, 2012I have a wired desktop PC (HP dx2480) running XP SP3 connected to a LinkSys Wireless 4-port router, and a laptop (Lenovo X61) running XP SP3 connected wireless to the same home network (192.168.0.x). The LinkSys connects by cable to a DSL router for internet access. Both PC and laptop get DHCP IPs from the Linksys (which I have hard-coded - mapped MAC to IP). They are on the same Windows Workgroup "HOME". Both Desktop and Laptop have same Windows User Logins. My desktop had a virus attack (trojan), which I removed and re-installed XP SP3 (from HP disks). Since then the PC seems to have "network sharing and discovery issues" on the network.
- The wired PC CAN ping the laptop, but laptop CANNOT ping PC.
- Both laptop and PC CAN access the internet.
- The laptop and PC COULD NOT see each other on Windows Workgroup, or see shares. This got resolved once I added IPX/SPX/NetBios Protocol on both the wired and wireless NICs on both PC/laptop respectively. NOTE: Before adding this protocol, I double-checked that File-Printer Sharing was enabled on both NICs, Windows Firewall had File-Print Sharing as exclusion. I tried everything including disabling firewall on both, disabling McAfee scanning on both, disabling Firewall on Linksys, but nothing worked.
- The laptop CAN see the NAS (Seagate GoFlexHome - connected by cable to LinkSys) using Seagate Dashboard software and direct IP. The PC CANNOT access the NAS using the Dashboard software but CAN access through direct IP. The NAS is named "goflex_home", which both can discover as \goflex_home from explorer.
- The laptop CAN see ITunes Home Share from a NAS, but the PC CANNOT see any home shares on the NAS (or from the laptop). I even added Home Sharing TCP/UDP ports as exceptions on the Firewall on the PC, but it still doesn't work.
- Some blog checking the node type on IP addresses given by DHCP. The laptop has Node Type "Hybrid", and the PC has "Unknown". I even went to PC regedit.exe and modified the and Change EnableProxy to 0 or 1 (instead of 2 that was in the PC as default).
- I have used SG TCPOptimizer on both laptop and PC to revert to Windows default?
D-Link DI-524 - Computer Sees Wireless Network But It Won't Connect Even Wired
Jun 25, 2011I'm desperately trying to set up my old D-Link DI-524 on my parent's Toshiba laptop...I'm visiting and going thru withdrawals! I've installed it, run the wizard etc but it doesn't work...not even wired. I've tried various cable configurations and I get nothing. Both cables are good and work just fine connected to the modem. I've reset it a few times, upgraded the firmware and still nothing...I'd think I'd at least get it to work hard wired. My laptop can see the network I set up even...but no data transmission. I'm not a wireless expert, but I need to become one fast!

My current setup: NetGear Wireless router is connected to my D-Link wired router, and I can access the internet no problem. (10 MBPS down, 5MBPS up)When I try to connect the 360 to the Netgear Wireless router, it connects to the Network, but Internet test it reads "DNS error - The router or modem may mot be automatically providing DNS settings. Try a manual DNS setting instead."(Next suggestion) "DNS Error - If you have a PC that can successfully browse the web, check it's network properties to find the DNS address it uses..."Now, I have XBMC running on my computer, and the 360 can access the network so it shows up under Video Apps so I can see a file list to stream movies. When I try to run a movie, it says I must download an update - so I can't watch the movies at all.I juso set it up so I can access the Network AND Internet.Again, Netgear wireless router (which 360 connects to) connected to D-Link wired router.
