WRT54G2 - Adding Wired Connection To Wireless Network?
Nov 16, 2011
I have a Linksys WRT54G2 router upstairs in my house that wirelessly reaches the entire house. I also just bought a Linksys Valet Plus M20 that will be my router once I get it in the mail. The problem is I want to hook up my downstairs Satellite receiver to the internet but it only has a LAN port. I cannot run a LAN cable downstairs. Is there any way to link these routers up wirelessly and then run a LAN cable to my SAT receiver? Or do I need to buy a different product?

Here's the setup:
DGL-4100 (wired gigabit router)
-> Wii
-> X360
-> PS3
-> DGS-2205 (wired gigabit switch in study)
*-> My PC
*-> Her PC
*-> DAP-1522 (wireless access point/bridge)
Now, we're on the 192.168.1.x domain, and I've already hooked my PC up directly to the DAP-1522 and switched its IP address. So now, I can connect to it through the switch. I've renamed it, set it to WPA2 with a passphrase, and should be set to go. However, I can't get my laptop, IPod touch, or any devices to see it. I tried entering the SSID manually, and nothing can find it.

If you look at my attachment it shows a thousand words; but basically I have a 4 port Thompson ADSL modem/router which handles the DHCP, and plugged into this are my main PC which I use to serve video files and music to my PS3 - which is connected to the same router but via a switch.The WIFI on the Thompson modem is switched off.In this scenario alone (NO Belkin wireless access point) my media plays beautifully via PS3 Media Server.However the moment I connect the Belkin into the switch as well, it plays havoc with the wired connection speed between the PC and PS3, dropping it to near unplayable speeds. Massive video stutters, music stops etc. I measured it using a PC on the end of the cable instead of the PS3 and it came out at about 1.4Mbps using 'LAN Speed Test'[CODE]

I have a very annoying problem with my Linksys WRT54G2.When I connect a wireless device (laptop, phone, TV, Ipad) to my wireless network I only see a Local connection, no connection to internet. After resetting the router (power off for several seconds) the internet-connection is available again.I have to do this every 1 - 2 days.

I currently have a wired network which starts with a cable router downstairs which is a virgin media netgear box with firewall and DHCP turned on. I have a NAS server and a smart tv which run off ethernet connections to this router.then have a cable run upstairs to a TPlink gigabit switch which is connected to a PC and a printer (in my study). All this works just fine, no configuration needed.I have a TPlink wireless router, a TL-WR743ND. I want to use this to connect to the switch upstairs (not downstairs - my stone walls limit any wireless access point) to provide wireless network coverage for my house.So I figured I should configure it with a dynamic IP address (ie it gets it from the netgear DHCP), turn off the TPLink's DHCP and firewall, and then any wireless devices attached to the TPLink by wireless should have access to printer and NAS

I am using the WRT54G2 connected to a cable modem that requires a PPPoE login. I followed the Service Providers instructions and cloned the modems MAC address to the WRT54G and setup the PPPoE user id and password. I can then plug my PC into one of the Ethernet connections on the back of the WRT54G and everything works as expected. First I connect to the WRT54G2 and then I open a PPPoE connection in my network settings and it logs into the service provider and everything works as expected. But when I connect to the WRT5G2 wirelessly I connect to the AP fine. When I open the same PPPoE connection to the service provider it fails, the message says I have the wrong userid or password or that the protocol is not supported. Of course I know the userid and password is correct because it works when connected with Ethernet cable. I have tried disabling the security on the wireless network but that did not seem to work.The modem is a HomePNA HCNA Voice Endpoint.I am at the latest firmware 1.0.04.

My home is CAT-5 ready, so I am using the RSV-4000 firewall router. I just bought a WIFI IPad2, so I need to add wireless. What would be the best CISCO/Linksys solution?I really like the added security of using the wired connection, besides, the PC's in my house do not move around. I just need the WIFI for the IPad.

I am getting ready to move into new digs and wanting to set up my network. Main house cable internet will come in with modum to a dlink router for both wired and wireless. desktop and a magic jack wired into router wireless for ipad and laptop. then run wire to workshop about 100' from house where a second magic jack and desktop will be set up (small biz out of workshop). I am pretty sure that the range of the router for wireless will reach to workshop fine for ipad but if not I will need to put a wireless up there tooext kids have a laptop running windows 7 but kids being kids and having had problems with self control on net in past I want to be able to make sure that I can turn them off from net when needed because
1. I do not want them running me past the data limits imposed by cable company and
2. keep them from sites such as those which got them in trouble in the past (kids are older and bought laptop for selves and pop will not go along with me confiscating it if they abuse internet privileges

I have a laptop running win xp. It was running fine this morning. I then brought it to a Honda dealer. The problem started there ...At first, I got a strong wi-fi signal but not network connection. I tried to repair (by right clicking on wireless network icon on the lower-right corner). The first time it seemed trying to do something but nothing worked. The 2nd time when I tried to run repair, the process hang and the machine could not be rebooted or shut off. I have to hold the power key for a few seconds to turn it off.Now, I am at home using another computer to post this message, which indicates my home lan and my router are working fine. But my laptop still has no connections - neither wired or wireless

I work at a small business that has an exisiting wired network. Our setup is: Internet > ISP Box > DHCP Server > Switch > Users. I have been attempting to add a wireless router to the network to enable our shop techs to wirelessly access our file computer. I have managed to get the wireless working, but the network was not visible, I could not access any network computers from the wireless, and I could not access the wireless router from our main server. After this I screwed up the settings completely and even a wired connection to the router couldn't connect to the internet. Now I have purchased a WAP54G, but I forsee the same problems when I go to config everything tomorrow.

I have a WRT54G2 v1 (no new firmware available) with a cable-modem connection (Motorola Surfboard), every thing works perfect but when my ISP goes down and then back up I cannot get the router work, LAN or Wifi connection. I have ping response to the router and I'm also able to get into the admin page. The only way to recover is restarting the router and sometimes releasing DHCP and then Renewing it, and the Wan connection actually gets the same IP it had before.

I bought a Linksys router last summer for my PC and Xbox. The PC and XBox are hardwired into the router. About two weeks ago, my router began dropping connection throughout the day. Sometimes it happens 3+ times in an hour. Other times it works for several hours before it drops.I upgraded the firmware as one fix and did a hard reset of the router. Still drops connection.I changed the MTU to 1400 and it worked fine for several hours but then dropped again the next morning. Also, like others on the forums, when I changed the MTU and hit Save Changes, it just ran and ran, never timed out...but never showed that it finished the command to save (if you get my meaning).I downloaded the Cisco Wireless Magic program to troubleshoot. It tells the same thing everytime. Unplug your router for 10 seconds and start over...My PC sometimes flashes a warning when I am restarting the router that I am getting Limited or NO Connectivity.

My computers will not connect through to the internet. It's not the modem, because if I connect my desktop directly to the modem, it connects fine (which is how I'm typing this now), but if I plug in the router, my desktop and my laptop (wireless) will show they're connected to the network, but that there is no internet connection available. Support won't troubleshoot because I've had my router 1 year and 10 days (which I think is a crock of **bleep**) and the "Guide Me" thing is just running me around in circles. I'm so pissed off I'm about to throw the router through a window and buy another (*NON*-Linksys) router, rather than pay $30 for one time tech support (which, with my luck, the same thing would happen again in 3 months, and the same directions wouldn't work then). I've done a factory reset, and set up the router from scratch, done a firmware upgrade, everything, but it still won't connect

My router has been dropping the internet connection for years. The ethernet connection to the desktop works fine all the time. The problem is only with the wireless connection. About every 1/2 hour or so the router will drop the wireless connection and neither or my 2 laptops can find the network. Unplugging the router and replugging it in solves the problem temporarily, until it drops it again. I updated the firmware to 1.0.4 and that yielded no changes.
Router: WRT54G2 v.1 Modem: Siemens Speedster 4100 (part #060-D141-A12) My two laptops running wirelessly are Macs. The desktop is PC running Windows Vista.

I need to add a Linksys BEFSR41 4-port wired router to my Linksys WRT160N Wireless 4-port router. The reason is I need more ports for wired equipment, XBOX, Tivo's, Laser printer, TV's, etc. I'm out of ports. I'd rather add the wired to the wireless since I have no problem with my current wireless configuration.

My note is an ACER 5552-5664 running Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7, in Ubuntu I can’t use the wireless. In Windows it works fine.The phone is a Samsung Galaxy and do no connect in the wireless.I had an old notebook running only Windows 7 that works fine too.In my father’s home there is an WRT54G and all my equipment connected there. Other problem is that when I tried to update the firmware, it simple don’t update. I’ve downloaded the last firmware file from Cisco’s page.

To start off with, I own the network, and every system connected to it. I run and admin it, so the chances that anyone else has changed anything is essentially zero.This computer has a wired network connection (The issue) and a wireless one. They are connected to two separate networks. A few days ago the wired card stopped getting an IP address from my router, always ended up with a 169 address. Eventually I just disabled it, and installed a PCI network card.
Now what happens is that all works fine for a while, then stops. Suddenly I am "Not connected to network" despite the fact my ip address hasn't changed. I run the network troubleshooter, it tells me the "Gateway is unreachable" Resets the network card, and all is good. Then after a while the network fails again. I did already scan with malwarebytes, and everything is fine as fat as its concerned.

WRT54G2 router has been working great since I got it a year ago. But recently I'm experiencing really slow wireless speed. My normal speed is around 15 Mbps but now it has dropped to about 0.85 - 1.0 Mbps. At first I thought someone might be using my connection without my knowledge so I changed the password but it was still slow. I then changed my wireless channel (I heard that if too many people are on the same channel it can cause interference) and it worked. However, a little bit later (sometimes a few hours and sometimes a few days) my connection would become slow again. I have also tried upgrading my firmware but no luck.

I'm currently staying at a marriott in NYC and at night after work the wireless access becomes awful. As a work around I've plugged the ethernet into my apple airport express and launched my wireless network as usual.Things are all fine and dandy for the first hour or so of browsing or watching netflix. But then it seems to lock up and I lose connection. I haven't seen any caps on data transfer that would explain it but is there something else I should be looking at? The fact that it works (albeit for a limited time), is a good sign I think. I'm mostly using it for my ipad to watch netflix etc.

I have an Ubuntu box, 11.04 x64, running on a Dual Opteron SFF box (iWill ZMaxDP... pretty old machine). Up until a few weeks ago, it was acting as a Windows 2008 Server, but i moved it to Ubuntu.
Anyway, the machine will not stay on the network for any amount of time, without falling off... I have changed network cards, cables, ports on the switch, etc, and nothing seems to work. I have a Windows 2003 box giving out DHCP addresses, and for a while, i actually tured that off and setup a second Ubuntu box to give IPs... it made no difference. The box gets an IP, and can ping outside for a bit (2 min or so) and then just looses connectivity... ifconfig shows it with an IP (i have tried both Static and DHCP config) and nothing seems to work.Restarting the network stack (/etc/init.d/networking restart) some times gets a connection working for a few min, but then it falls over again..
Just to note, the main onboard network card is not showing up for some reason. I have an Intel Dual GigE PCI card installed. Eth2 is the "Working" interface, an ETH3 is not connected to anything.... Also, this is probably the first time since i installed the machine that the connection is staying up.

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router set up on my home network. When I first got the router, I used the installation disk on my desktop PC to set up my wireless network. I am getting rid of this computer, as I now have a laptop computer. The laptop can already utilize the network, and I can even configure the router using the laptop. Obviously, the old desktop doesn't even have to be turned on for any other laptops or devices to use the network.
If I get rid of the old desktop, will it be necessary to run the installation disk that came with the router on my new primary PC? Or is that a one time process to configure the router with the modem and set up a network?

So I am on my second HDD with Iomega. I am thinking now that this is a router problem rather than a HDD problem. I have a 1TB Iomega home media network drive, eversince I bought my router and began using it I have been unable to use my HDD. It is hard wired to the router via RJ-45 cable and both units have been reset and powered up in about every order you can imagine. I have reset factory defaults on the router and made security changes to ensure there was nothing blocking that port. I am at wits end. I cannot connect to the HDD and the drive flashes yellow and blue indicating it cannot estabilsh or receive an IP address from the router.

I recent bought an Asus G74SX-A1. While the machine runs like an absolute dream, it does seem to have a networking problem that I have been attempting to address for about a week. In my college dorm there is an ethernet port that carries an active internet connection. When my laptop is plugged into the port via ethernet, I receive no connection (well mostly no connection, every now and then I will connect for a split second allowing me to load my homepage, Google). This problem also exists on my dorm's WiFi. My LAN card is a RealTek BGE Family Controller (PCIe)
However, on my netbook (an Asus 1000HE, which I am typing this post on) everything is fine. I am quick to blame the retailer who sold me the G74SX seeing as they replaced the stock WiFi card with a Bigfoot Killer 1102 card, and my first assumption is that something was not installed properly during my laptop's assembly or that I simply messed up a driver update. I became quite frustrated with the whole situation and in order to find a quick solution I formatted the laptop back to factory defaults.
Something magical happened.For about a day and a half, my LAN card worked. I packed up my gear this weekend and headed back home, and at my parents' house my WiFi card worked wonderfully.I thought my networking woes were behind me, but this was not the case. When I returned to my dorm this afternoon, my LAN and WiFi cards began experiencing the same problems they experienced before the reformat. A third variable of some interest is that I brought my wireless router back to my dorm in order to utilize a less-crowded private WiFi spot and discovered that it worked fine and I was able to connect to the internet on my iPad using my router. This evening, however, my router decided to stop carrying an internet connection as well. I can connect to the router itself, but I cannot receive an internet connection, even on the netbook.
I have tried uninstalling/updating drivers for both the Bigfoot card and the RealTek card to no avail. My best hypothesis is that the problem lies in some setting that both the G74SX and the D-Link DIR-655 have in common, seeing as they are the only wired components that aren't receiving a connection.
Equipment: D-Link DIR-655, Asus G74SX, Asus EeePC 1000HE
