Get Hostname / IP Of Each Computer Linked On Port Of Switch?

Jun 21, 2012

I'm trying to use MRTG and SNMP on a Windows Serveur 2008R2.I want to manage my Switch with mrtg, but it don't show me which computers or server are connected to the Switch's ports. All I have, in the .cfg file is the interface name ( like S0/0 ), which are useless for me, I would like to get IP adresses or hostname but mrtg doesn't seems to do it.Any of you know if Mrtg can do that ? or maybe there are some others ways to do that ?

Computers On Home Network Are Not Linked?

Aug 18, 2011

I have a Netgear Router connected by DSL to the Internet (through Roadrunner). I have a AT & T Microcell Tower and 2 computers connected to the Router: a desktop running Windows XP Home Edition wired to the Router and a laptop running Windows 7 connected to the router wirelessly. Both computers connect to the Internet without any problem. However, they do not communicate with each other. The laptop indicates a home network with all 3 devices, but cannot communicate with the desktop. The desktop does not show any network at all. It only indicates a connection through the Router.

Cisco :: STP With Switches Linked By Single Hub?

Sep 28, 2012

Question: how would STP or RSTP behave in a star topology with a hub in the middle?i.e. you have four switches all linked to the same central hub. Single links, no loops. Each switch would then get BPDUs from everybody.Going by theory, it should be OK since it still sees the root's BPDU and will see the link to the hub as the root port, despite presence of other BPDUs from other switches? No different from receiving an inferior BPDU from an upstream switch and a superior BPDU from a further upstream root switch.I guess I could lab it by turning off spanning tree on a switch to simulate a hub? I've never previously had to deal with STP issues where there are hubs that aren't strictly point to point bridging so to speak (ok they're not bridging but you get the drift).I've got a scenario I'm examining at the moment where this is the topology, except all switches have bpdufilter running hence effectively no spanning tree. I'm curious to know what would happen should I remove the bpdufilter.I realise there is zero benefit in spanning tree in this instance as I don't have any redundant loops to fall back on, but I'm reluctant to turn off STP on those vlans (since obviously theres stuff behind those switches). The BPDUfilter method seems like an elegant solution but I wonder if its actually necessary.(the hub is actually a VPLS mesh, most sites terminate PE to CE router but I'm playing around with switches as the termination points – run our own Q in Q, split vlans off before it gets to layer 3 as separation, etc.)

D-Link DIR-655 :: Client Associated Twice Before Being Secured And Linked?

Aug 19, 2011

I'm just wondering why my computer is being associated twice before being secured and linked when it obtains an IP address from the DIR 655 router. I am using the DWA-552 wireless card to connect to it. When I first started using them together, this wasn't happening. Then, all of a sudden, one day it just started showing "above message repeated 1 times" just below the log entry for the client being associated".

D-Link DIR-655 :: No Connectivity On Desktop That Is Directly Linked To Router

Aug 29, 2011

I know there are a lot of threads out there regarding connection issues, both with wireless & LAN connections, after updating firmware to 1.35.  To provide a snapshot of my setup...I have 3 GB switches throughout my home, a couple Ethernet enabled Blu-Ray players, 2 XBOX 360's, multiple satellite receivers with Ethernet, 5 PC's, 3 iphones, etc...you get the picture.  I also have 5 older DLink wi-fi cameras.  So, with this said my setup has been flawless for some time.  However, a week or so ago I upgraded my firmware on my DIR-655 to the latest version...everything still seemed fine at the time.  Yesterday I noticed we had no wireless internet so I went and checked.  Sure enough...no connectivity on my desktop that's directly linked to the router, etc.

I tried rebooting & then resetting the router...got connectivity, but as soon as I plugged my PC into the switch...no IP address.  I played around with settings, wiring configurations, etc...I'm pretty up to speed on this setup so I felt I exhausted every option.  I thought my router went bad...gave me an excuse to go get the latest so I brought home a NetGear N750...hooked it up.  As soon as I changed the LAN IP address range to condense the #of IP addresses I'm giving out again, the LAN connection to the PC was lost...I could not get it restored.  I finally got it working, bypassing the GB switch, but the wireless would lose connection literally after a few seconds.

I ended up taking the NetGear router back and bought the exact same DIR-655, but this time it was HW version B1 instead of A and it was firmware #2.00 or something like that.  I hooked it up when I got home...configured the system to exactly the way I had it before and PRESTO!!!  My system is working like it was before.  I can only think that the firmware upgrade I made on the previous router screwed something up in my system.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3825 ISR - Traffic Route From Switch Port To Router Port

Jun 5, 2013

I'm fairly new to Cisco products am in the process of developing my network knowledge on a deeper level.  I have a 3825 with a HWIC-4ESW and I'm struggling to fully understand how the two "see" each other.  I've setup a V LAN with a layer 3 address on the HWIC and added the switch ports to it.  This seemed to allow devices connected to the switch ports to talk to the built-in router ports.  I thought this was all making sense until i applied an access-list to the router port.  It's a simple ACL i'm just using for testing and the only thing it does is blocks telnet from anywhere.  I know the ACL is setup properly because if I connect a device directly to the router port i cannot telnet to the port.  However, if i connect a device to one of the switch ports, i am able to telnet to the router port successfully.

It seems that I'm missing something with how traffic flows from the switch port to the router ports and how the two "see" each other.

Belkin F7D1301 / Baton IBLR6111A - NAT Capable Modem Linked For Failover

Jan 31, 2013

There are a total of 7 systems on the network. The network has evolved from two small shops (3-4 computers each) to a single one with a sum total of 7 systems. Historically there were two ISP (which the new management would like to continue). Thus there are two NAT enabled devices at the last-mile from each ISP

Belkin F7D1301
Baton iBLR6111A

Networking is almost an unknown to me. An ip config on the computers in the network brought the realization there are 2 sub-nets ... at least it looks like there are 2 sub-nets (192.168.1.x, and 192.168.2.x).

My gut tells me the above mentioned modem/router cannot be connected & configured to be used transparently for the computers connected to the other modem/router without additional hardware. Is this right?

Hostname Entry Against Public IP?

We have one business application, accessed across GCC region by having a single entry with individual computer hosts file, ie123.123.155.116 myappl.mycompany.com and other than Bahrain, all countries are able to successfully resolve the hostname (application only works against hostname (Oracle EBS)) against this entry with the hosts file. Now, prior contacting the ISP in Bahrain (where internet is regulated due to the current political situations) we need to know whether anything could be done from our end to resolve this issue.

Invalid IP Resolving To Hostname

Dec 8, 2012

I have a small workgroup at home of about 4 or 5 computers. All the PC's, notebooks are running W7. I have one PC that I use as my "always on PC", with all my media and resources I use on it. The NetBIOS or computer name assigned to it is mediapc with a static IP of 192.168.254.150. All my other desktop PC's, excluding the notebooks, have a static IP also. The problem is more annoying then anything, and thus I only work on it intermittently. Today I decided to post after wasting much of another day attempting to resolve the issue. The problem is accessing my mediapc from any of my other computers while using the computer name, "mediapc". If I use the static IP assigned above, there is no problems. Everything works, RDP, Dameware, Telnet, SSH, Ping,Tracert, etc. If I use the computer name "mediapc" then it fails with an unreachable host error or similar. The reason it fails is because somewhere in my network or in the mediapc itself, it wants to resolve the "mediapc" name to an unknown IP of 192.168.254.47.

Now with this said, I can still share files and access the mediapc using the name in a UNC syntax, like //mediapc/data works fine or directly clicking on the mediapc share under Network works also. If I Ping mediapc from any other PC than itself, it fails with the 254.47 IP. If I try to use any remote connection software and use the name mediapc, it fails to connect. This is what I know and have tested:

1. Adding a host entry to all the client computers works but does not fix the root of the problem.

2. nslookup mediapc reports the wrong IP of 254.47

3. Remote connections as I mentioned above fail because the name is resolving to an invalid IP.

4. Pinging mediapc from itself, displays the correct IP of 254.150, although I have to use the -4 parameter.

5. Arp -a on all PCs report correct IP of 254.150 with the correct MAC address. (There is no 254.47 listed)

6. NBTstat -a mediapc reports correctly and shows the correct MAC address.

7. Network shares work correctly from and to the mediapc without issue. No access problems.

8. I have deleted all arp entries and flushed the dns with no change.

9. MS mentions to change order of the Bindings of the adapters, yet I only have one Local Area Connection.

Find A Machine By Hostname In Campus LAN?

Dec 12, 2011

I manage the network of a small (120 users) network spread out over 5 sites within a 10 mile radius (for normal ops- extended ops can expand to include other cities).I think I'd call that a Campus LAN, perhaps it's just a really small MAN (for normal ops)...I am starting my CCENT/CCNA track so this may be blazingly obvious to some of you- but I'm sure to learn something either way...Every now and again we have to go find "hostname "X"" for an update that won't roll out by way of our (Server Sr SysAdmin's) tools, so we actually have to put hands on it. Unfortunately the prior admins didn't document the inventory to such a level that we know "laptop_015" is in the building down by the college.

I DO have documentation on my equipment (I'm the Network Sr SysAdmin) that I have rolled together over the last 9 months being here...I have a Cisco 5520 ASA, and use ASDM to manage it. What would be extremely handy would be the ability to put a query in the system to report back what switch a given hostname is plugged intoBetter yet, if it could tell me switch and switchport.I imagine this would be simple if I had the MAC address- there's got to be a way to grep the switches for a given MAC- but not sure if it'll work in a similar fashion for ARP lookups.

Hostname Is Resolving The Wrong IP Address

Aug 31, 2012

I am having trouble with getting a copier that I have networked to stay registered in the system. When connecting all the equipment back for the new year I was having trouble getting this one specific copier back online properly. I used to have it assigned with a static IP because the person that was here before me had all the computers map the printer using the IP instead of Hostname but that was causing IP conflicts so I removed it and mapped the printer through Hostname which is made "MPF-TOSHRM328"So now for the actual problem, after the copier got the new dynamic IP of 10.8.214.151 i thought it would be fine and everything would click in because it was mapped to the host name and not the IP. But when I do a tracert on the hostname it still shows up with the old IP. and now that the old ip has been reassigned it actually points to a physical machine now. Weird. All attempts to flush the DNS have not resolved the issue. I even tried going in and deleting the entries in manually. No luck. As a point of reference here is the result from the tracert.Tracing route to MFP-TOSHRM328.78B450.nycboe.org [10.8.214.126] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms SLS330W09 [10.8.214.126]Trace complete. I should also mention that this server is only here in the sense that it is the DC for the computers on this floor. There is a whole other system that assigns the IP's and handles the DNS. I do not have access to it, it is run by the main network people at the central offices.
