Home Network :: Connecting AirPort Express To Linksys WRT54GL Router?
Jan 17, 2013
I have an AirPort Express set up as my router, and that works fine and is the main network that I use. I also have a Linksys WRT54GL that is wired to a printer.Currently, when I want to print from my computer, I have to manually connect to the Linksys network, which is a pain. I would like to wirelessly connect the Linksys to my main network, so I can print even when connected to my Airport Express.Does that mean that I have to configure the Linksys as an access point? A bridge? Something else? How do I do that?

I added an airport express wirelessly to my E3000 network at home. Other wireless devices (laptop) sometimes have issues seeing it within the network. If these devices are wired in the network they don't have any issues seeing the airport express. Is there any special configuration I need to do to my E3000 so that wireless devices can see each other? I also had the same issue with my ps3 for streaming from wireless laptop to wireless ps3.

I am trying to connect my laptop running windows 7 to an airport express so I can stream music to my hi-fi.I've tried a number of different things, none of which have been successful.I've tried resetting the device before each attempt to connect it and I've also ensured that the driver for my computer's Wi-Fi (Intel (R) Wi-Fi link 5100 AGN) and the firmware for my router (Linksys E2000) are up to date. The apple airport utility program is also up to date. I also saw this webpage:Sharing my Win 7 PC with Apple Airport Extreme and wireless network. - Microsoft Answers And, all these settings were correct already.I also took the device back to the shop where it was tested and found to be working correctly.
Just plugging in my airport express - Opening the airport utility program, my airport express is recognized straight away. It is highlighted in the left-hand pane and I click on continue. I then get a message asking if I want to switch networks and it says that this is required in order to set it up. I click OK to continue. After a window appears saying that it is detecting apple wireless devices, I get error message number 4 saying that an error occurred while trying to access the network. It then asks me to check to make sure my network is valid.Using ‘configure other under the file tab - The airport express is still recognized in the left-hand pane but I click on configure other. A window appears asking for the I.P. address and a password. I enter the default I.P. address (10.0.1.1) and the default password (public) for the airport express. I then get error 6753 (an error occurred while trying to access the apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again)however, my computer still recognizes the airport express in the list of available wireless networks. I therefore click on it and connect to it. I then try to enter the details (under configure other again). I then get through to the configure apple wireless device screen in which I can input the details of my network details, etc. I enter the details and make sure that they match my routers settings (I have even tried this with no security settings on my router). I then click on update. The computer automatically reverts back to my network and it seems like everything is working. The green light even appears on my airport express. However, I then get a message stating: Airport utility was unable to find your wireless Airport device after restarting.Switching off the wireless network and connecting the Airport express to the computer with an Ethernet cable - The device is also recognized here and I can enter all the details. Before updating I turn on my wireless network so it can make a connection. The green light shows on the airport express but i again get the message that: Airport utility was unable to find your wireless Airport device after restarting.

I've got an apple Airport Express and have managed to set it into my network. Airplay works on both Itunes and my phone. However after 10-15minutes the Airplay drops out and the network map shows that the airport express is 'offline'. however the airport express LED remains showing it still have connection to the network. The only way to get it back is to reset the AE. The apple forum has lots of people stating the same problem with WAG120n routers.
-Router Firmware V 1.00.16
-Airport Express firmware version 7.6.1
-windows Vista

I have just recently replaced my Netgear router with an EA3500 and have it bridged t an Airport Express. From there I have an ethernet cable attached to an AV receiver (Pioneer 1021k), but all to often now with this new router to use any of the features of the receiver ie Airplay, iOS app remote, I must restart the router EVERY time. This is frustrating because the these issues were never present with the netgear router.

When it comes to networking and require some advice on setting up my wrt61on router with my airport express. I have managed to get it all connected up and working but am suffering frequent dropouts while streaming music. I have done a little reading and have tried changing a few settings on the router but have found no improvement. My set up is as follows.
-Modem connected to WRT610N Router
-Desktop Computer connected to network via wusb600N dongle
-Airport Express connected via wif
-Using Iphone 4 as remote
Is there a way where i can set up the airport express on a total different frequency to everything else in the house i.e laptops iphones etc to prevent these cutouts.

I have an Airport Express and two wireless routers. The Airport Express is connected to Router 1 via Ethernet. Router 2 is connected to Router 1 via Ethernet. Since I like to know which Wireless Router I'm connected to, Router 1 & 2 use different SSIDs. Router 1 is the DHCP server (DHCP turned off on Router 2). All security settings are turned OFF.Router 1 is a Linksys WRT120N with latest firmware and Router 2 is a Belkin Wireless Router.I can connect via wireless to Router 1 and Router 2 via the seperate SSIDs and have Internet connectivity (Router 1 is connected the the Internet) and print to a wireless printer connecter to the Router 1 wireless network.
Now here is the strange thing. I can see the Airport Express only if I connect to the Router 2 wireless network!!! I cannot see it if I connect to the Router 1 wireless network, yet the Airport Express is connected via Ethernet to ROUTER 1 !So for some reason, the LinkSys WRT120N Wireless Router won't route the Airport Express to a wireless client on it's own wireless network, but it will route it to an Ethernet client which is what any client connected to Router 2 wirelesslessly is seen as. When connected to router 1 wirelessly I can ping the IP of the Airport but something is preventing it from working with iTunes/iPhone/Airport Utility. It is bizarre because these are all devices connected to the same LAN. SInce I can ping it, it tells me that it isn't a routing issue, but there must be some sort of filter between the wireless and ethernet that is preventing the Airport protocol from being transmitted.

I have a new ASUS N53S laptop and cannot get it to connect to an existing Airport Express network. It can connect to other networks.
1. Other machines can connect to the Airport Express network, including a Toshiba Satellite PC, iPhone, and MacBook.
2. The Passkey is valid and works for the devices identified in (2)
3. When entering the valid passkey, the network rejects it and says the passkey is invalid
4. I have opened the Airport Express utility and changed the passkey to a new one, and all of the devices identified in (2) were able to connect -- but the ASUS laptop still cannot connect, the system still rejects it from the ASUS laptop and says "passkey invalid"

I have only windows computers at home, although for some reason i recently bought an Apple Airport express. Probably because its a lot faster than the old router Ive got now. But I have a problem when i try to set it up. When I plug in the Express and the cable from the cable modem then start Airport utility, it cant find the Express. Ive tried using my laptop and connecting it straight into the modem, but that doesn't seem to fix anything.

I've tried changing settings on the 655 but nothing seems to make any difference. I'm able to use an Apple TV/iPhone/iPad with no issues.

Recently we ordered a new Modem from Centurylink to replace an old one we have. (which ironically the old one's wireless is way better) Both modems work perfectly fine, and I've tried the same things with both to figure this out. I ran an ethernet to my gaming room, which is about 150 feet. When I connect my computer directly into the modem, my computer works fine. Initially, the PS3 worked, but when I switched back to the computer with the single Ethernet cable, I was getting an IP error. Every since then, the PS3 will not connect through Ethernet. (Wireless works, but its so far away the signal is weak)
So, I dug up my router, Linksys WRT54GL, plugged it into the ethernet that came from the Modem, (did all the steps in order multiple times), and no internet through wifi or ethernet on it. The lights and everything say there is ethernet and the WIFI/Ethernet are working, but there is no internet. All the wires are confirmed fine. I've tested them on other devices plugged directly into the modem. I tried the PS3 at the modem with 3 Ethernet cords as a test, It says there is an IP Address timeout error. Regardless of what I do, the PS3 won't connect via Ethernet. And without internet working on the Linksys router, Im getting about 15-25% signal from the Modem. (which is also wireless, if that has anything to do with the issue)
I need the router to do at the very least, WIFI. I really want Ethernet though so I don't lose much speed. (We are maxed out here at 1.5mb connection from Centurylink)
When it comes to computers, I'm advanced with them. When it comes to networking, I'm okay. I understand basic things, like accessing the router or modem through the browser. I can do the whole setup for WIFI. But when it comes to how the IP address, Static IP, etc., goes, im confused by them. So forgive me if I sound ignorant. I've looked for over a week on sites, and nothing is working. The router may be broken, im not sure. I bought it a few years ago and then didn't need it till recently. So its been sitting in a box.
All I know is, I have an ethernet from the modem to this room, the PS3 refuses to get an IP, and if I do it too much the PC gets an IP conflict. If I plug the Ethernet into the internet part of the router and do wireless or Ethernet, there is no internet coming out.

My problem is this: Randomly, the DIR-825 will prohibit streaming to my AirPort Express via AirTunes. It'll also disappear from Bonjour Browser and AirPort Utility. I can connect directly to it, if I enter the IP into the AirPort utility directly. The only way to get it to come back is to either reboot the DIR-825, reboot the AE, or unplug the ethernet to the AE.

I've been looking around for quite some time and can't find a complete answer. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router handling my home wireless network located in the living room (let's call it 'Zone A').I have an ethernet cable running from that router to the other end of the house (let's call this one 'Zone B'), where the wi-fi signal is very weak. a. What is the technically correct way to have a strong wi-fi signal at Zone B (with the same SSID, key-phrase, etc.)? b. If I take another WRT54GL router, set the same SSID and key-phrase, disable its DHCP and plug it to the ethernet cable in Zone B - will that do the trick? I've tried the Linksys range extender at a friend's house and it turned out to be a big flop.

I have a network that has an Netgear ADSL 2 wireless router.Everything on this network has run perfectly for long now. In fact everything is still perfect for all the machines except for 1 macbook laptop.I can connect and transfer files between all machines on the network Machines on network:
2 x Windows desktop PC's (hardwired),
1 x MacbookPro (OSX) (Airport)
1 x Macbook (OSX) (Airport) This is the one in question here.
I can browse the internet with all these machines as well.Well to my astonishment after 3 days of non stop trying, the one laptop can only browse sites that are on servers that are physically/geographically in South Africa. It wont connect to .com, .net or .co.za domains that are hosted elsewhere with on the globe. In SA there are some ISP's that give "local surfing" free after the accounts cap has been reached. This is not the case here cause the other machines connect anywhere using the same isp/router settings from the same network.

Currently I have the modem into an apple airport extreme, this provides WiFi to the whole house + has a NAS drive connected to it...I have two x box's on the top floor of the house... One is currently wired to one of the airport extremes LAN ports...Now what I am trying to achieve - the second xbox is an old one so needs to be plugged in by cable too... (and I don't want two cables through the house). I have an old Netgear wpn824v2 router. Now so far I plugged the ethernet cable from airport x into one of the lan ports on the Netgear...Then both xboxs are wired into the netgear... The netgear has basically nothing setup on it - no security etc... ip address is on the same network as DHCP router.Netgear has upnp and dhcp disabled...Now stand alone one xbox at a time, the connection is actually faster than I have ever achieved, the full 50mb - but if i wire up my laptop to the netgear and use the internet at the same time the xbox lags like hell, so obviously not tried both xboxs together yet as it will just cause lag!
*modem* ----- wired to ---------
-----airport extreme(provides WiFi to house)* ----- Wired to --
-----*NAS drive* --- AND---
-----*top floor to the second router - Netgear* ---wired to ---
----*2 Xbox's

My WRT54GL Linksys modem has me stumped, it will not connect no matter what I try. it worked fine until just recently after a power outage; everything seems to be working perfectly fine hardware wise; the router shows a solid power led and network activity on WLAN, Ethernet, and Internet. I've tried soft resets and factory reset, clearing my caches, releasing/renewing IPCONFIG.
The peculiar part is that it is not letting me access the web config at 192.168.1.1 while connected with the modem, however if I plug the router directly to my PC's ethernet port I can access the config; Itried updating the firmware this way but it didn't solve the problem. I have no more ideas.
Below is the IPCONFIG information with the modem and router hooked up:

I have a rather complex situation that requires (I think) a complex solution that I have not yet worked out! I have the following:
- ADSL internet connection
- TP-Link TD-W8960N 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router
- Brand new Airport extreme (n)
- Four brand airport expresses (n)
- 24 port 3com switch.
My requirements are:
- A contained, protected, office network with wi-fi with access, and also access for wired clients via the 24 port switch.
- A "guest" network with only internet access which needs to be spread throughout a large, old building (thick stone walls!), but cabling is not possible.
My inital thought was to use the TP-Link as only a modem and run the network via the extreme. Plug the switch into the extreme which would also run the office wi-fi and then extend the guest network (nice extra option in the extreme!) thoughout the building with the expresses. Problem is that you cannot extend the guest network with either n or g. I cannot just reverse these two networks because I need wired access to the office network. The current system has the extreme running only the office network (wi-fi + wired) as a "double NAT" inside the "mother network" which is DHCPed by the TP-LINK with its wireless on (pretty good range). I set the expresses to extend the TP-Link's wireless by old fashioned WDS which I got working but it was incredibly slow just because that is what g WDS is like. I am not using the n capacity of the expresses.
I thought about using the TP-Link DHCP and wi-fi to run the office network and then I can use the extreme and the "extend my network" n option for better speeds around the building, but then the office network would be open to the guest network.

I've recently purchased an E4200, and while it works great, I'd like to use my Apple Airport Extreme (2nd generation) to extend my network to another part of the house that doesn't get as great of a signal. I've become very frustrated trying to accomplish it, and I'm not sure if the problem is more from the Linksys end, the Airport end, or if it's just me.

I have a newer N Router (Dlink DIR-655) and the wireless signal coming off of it, just isn't strong enough. I was planning on using the WTF54GL to repeat the signal and inturn increase the coverage area. I've installed the latest version of Tomato on there (v1.28) and have gone through setting it up as a wireless client, wireless ethernet bridge (which works for picking up the wireless signal and then plugging something in via ethernet has internet), access point, access point + wds and just wds. None of which I can get to seem to properly repeat the wireless signal with internet connectivity. I have both routers set to G only channel 6, WPA Personal, Is this even possible? Or do I need a router that can run the tomato firmware on the main (host) router that is connected to the net?

Currently, I have 2 Apple Airport Extremes, and 1 Wireless Netgear ADSL Router. The 2 AAEs are connected separately to the router, and this allows us to get coverage in most part of the house (it's a large house with concrete and granite walls). I also have a HP Officejet 8500 'wireless printer' that is wired to the router as you can only print to the printer when it's in standby with a physical connection to the router (that's a different story). So my goal is to replace everything as the router is slowly dying and as a result of this, I want to be able to access the Internet wirelessly throughout the house, and be able to print from any where in the house without anything connected via cables. And as a bonus, I would like the Internet to be accessible 100 yards/metres down the garden (workshop is there). Basically, blanket coverage!

I'm in university halls, using the university wireless network. The network seems to be a large number of routers all with the same SSID on the same network.Usually my connection is great; but sometimes my computer decides to switch to the router from another flat. A few minutes ago my wireless config utility told me I was connected to the flat 24 router. I am now connection to the flat 26 router. It wouldn't be much of a problem, only it's give or take, around 140 times slower because of how far away it is. Heres a quick comparison of the speeds:ad Connection: (The ping here is very mis-leading, it took several minutes to calculate the ping and several more minutes simply to start the download whereas on the previous test it was instant)Here is one I took in December which shows how bad the ping can get:How do I tell my computer to ignore those other routers with the same SSID? They have different MAC addresses, is there something I can do with that? Windows can't tell the difference, I have to do it through the driver software that came with my Edimax wireless card, it recognises each router seperately but ultimately it always recognises it primarily by it's SSID. Sometimes it sticks to the good one, sometimes it changes every few minutes and I have to manually change it back and it is very frustrating, can't it just ignore the bad connection completely?
I can't login to change any of the router settings and the router doesn't have any ethernet ports for students to use, so I need a solution from the PC end (If I could i'd simply change the SSID to something slightly different so it didn't clash, then there would be no problem). The router is literally right outside my door, but my computer insists on switching to the one 50 metres away instead

I have a home network. There are a total of 3 PCs. Each runs Server 2008 32 bit. One PC - Lets say Server A has 2 NICs with Ip addresses, 10.0.0.10/30, 10.0.0.2/30.Other two computers Server B and Server C have single NIC with addresses 10.0.0.1/30 and 10.0.0.9/30 resp. So as you can see that there are two subnets 10.0.0.2 - 1 and 10.0.0.9 - 10. I can ping B and C from A. I want that B and C can also ping each other and if I run tracert on B or C, it should give me the route to the destination via A. All this without any other hardware. Like using route add... etc eg. if I write tracert 10.0.0.9 on B, it should return a route like 10.0.0.1-----10.0.0.10------10.0.0.9. Refer to the image that I have Attached
