Home Network :: ISP Won't Give Static IP?

Jun 23, 2011

What I'm trying to go for is to make a Static IP so that I can forward my ports in order to play certain games. I have had my ports forwarded at one time with a different ISP (in the same area), however they used cable and the company I'm with now uses DSL. The company "Hawaiian Telcom" has provided me with a Motorola 2210 modem/router. I have had trouble trying to create a static IP with this router so (sorry if this was a stupid move) I decided to buy a linksys router to try to port forward with that. When my ports were forwarded with the previous ISP I was using a linksys router then. The now aged linksys router was replaced due to it getting wet, but that's besides the point

Setup Home Network To Run A DLNA Server For Videos / Music?

Dec 23, 2011

I want to setup my home network to run a DLNA server for videos, music, etc. I know that there are many new routers and NAS devices out there that now have the capability to run a DLNA server built-in. My question is, which would provide a better DLNA server: one that is built into the router or one that is built into the NAS device?

Setup Permanent Printer IP Address?

Nov 18, 2011

I have a network printer which is connected to unmanaged switch, then unmanaged switch is then connected to one of the slots on the router (to get internet access). I use the program Free IP Scanner to look for the IP so then I can find the IP address of my printer. Then I would go to Port setting of the printer and change. Every week or month I have to do this. Two things I would like to know:

1. I have a 2003 server which is not connected or active yet. it's just sitting there running but no computers or printers are connected yet. How do I make this to be a printer server and solved my issue of having keep tracing the IP for my printer?

2. If not using the server, how would I setup my printer IP address to be permanent?

Home Network :: Advanced Home Network Setup (3 Subnets) And Port Forwarding?

Feb 24, 2013

I have a Time Warner Cable business class service with no static IP, with a wireless modem which is plugged to a CAT5 distribution panel. On the jacks (2 other rooms on the house) I have a Linksys E3000 and a Linksys Valet router for signal boost and gadgets usage (TV, cameras, etc). The main router (TWC) has it's own external IP which TWC assigns to me and internally distributes via DHCP the range 192.168.0.x. With that said:

- The E3000 has a 192.168.0.6 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The Valet has a 192.168.0.7 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The main router has the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and web-interface

Whenever I connect something to the E3000, it is distributing the 192.168.1.x range and the valet 192.168.2.x range. That works perfectly for my home based business until I decided to use more stuff on the network such as a IP printer, IP cameras, etc.

- The IP cameras are connected to the E3000 due to signal strength and I have manually assigned them the 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 IPs and ports 9001 and 9002.

- The printer is connected to the E3000 and I have manually assigned the IP 192.168.1.30.

Issue 1: Port forwarding On the main router (TWC - UBEE) I have tried to setup a port forwarding by informing the Local IP as 192.168.0.6 (E3000 IP), Internal Port 0, Public Interface IP (0.0.0.0), Ext Start Port 9001, Ext End Port 9001, Protocol - Both, Enabled Yes. On the E3000 I did the same config (screen shot attached e3000.png).This is not working properly. I can't get into the camera.

Issue 2: Printer/ The printer is only accessible if I connect to the E3000 (because it is on the 192.168.1.x network)

Issue 3: How to configure all the devices on the same subnet? If I want everyone to be on the 192.168.0.x network, how to configure properly the E3000 and the Valet? I have tried to force them into the same network but it would not work properly. It would not get an IP from the UBEE router (main).

How To Setup Home Server And Restricting Users

Feb 20, 2013

I am a networking student so have access to a free copy of Windows Server 2012. I want to setup and get experience with AD, DHCP, and DNS, among other services. Right now I have a Netgear router attached to a Cisco switch. (studying for CCENT cert) I have my desktop and server plugged into switch. I want my desktop to connect to the domain for testing and messing aroudn with. My wife has a netboook, smartphone, and wireless ipod. I'd like her 3 devices to get an IP from the DHCP server without having her authenticate to the server. Will the Netgear router allow this since wirless access is on? Or will she need to authenticate with the server to get a DHCP IP? I am gonig to disable the router's DHCP service.

Home Network :: Playing MPEG-2 File In Webpage From Home Server?

Dec 20, 2012

I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

Fast Network Sharing AND Permanent Address?

Jan 12, 2012

I need a place to share files between a few other people that:

1. Is fast and easy, like sharing files on a local network with gigabit hardware. Why not do exactly that? (see next point)

2. Has a permanent address to access the files, as if it were hosted on a website. The reason for this is the software I will be using to point to these files does not use relative paths. If it did use relative paths, I was simply going to setup a shared dropbox with all the files, but alas, that does not work. I want this solution to be future proof, so that no matter how much I change my setup, the file paths that my software is looking at will always remain the same.

3. (optional, but preferred) Ability to automatically backup these files. Like an rsync with amazon S3 or something.I am guessing there is a simple and widely used solution to this, like an ftp setup, just not sure how it all works.

Home Network :: Setup A DC++ HUB For Sharing Data Within The University Local Network?

Feb 13, 2011

I want to setup a DC++ HUB for sharing data within the university local network. We have addresses of the form 172.31.*.*. These addressed are accessible within the university bu non routable outside on the internet. My plan is to setup a local HUB for DC++ for sharing data within the university intranet. So even if internet is unavailable data can be exchanged through LAN. This HUB must not be accessable outsied the university network.how should I do this all..implementing network sharing other than DC++. My basic idea is that everybody can share their data and the data is searchable from one common interface( Web interface is better option, if possible). And data featching should prefferably be from many hosts, using multiple connections so that speed can be improved..

Home Network :: WAN Access With VLAN Setup?

I am extremely new to network but also excited with the things you can achieve with a Cisco switch. For about 3 months I sat down looking at my "Cisco C2950-24 Switch", this surely for such a beastly looking thing it must be able to do something other than just allow you to plug in cables. So with that said I started to do some reading and watched a couple of You Tube Videos.I am on the route to complete my first goal and thats have my own VLAN setup with 1 Server and 6 clients. The Server is running ESXi therefore a few other servers are running inside it too.So my VLAN - VLANID 20 running the network 172.22.22.0. On the physical switch I have the following:Port 1 - WAN incoming connection from my Router on the network 192.168.178.0Port 2 thru 9 all running on VLAN 20.By the way I am using the GUI Cisco Network assistant

It sees the network and attempts to connect, but never successfully connect. I have other laptops at home that are working just fine. The network is setup with WEP security, and I've entered/reentered the password several times.

Note, when I started this, the home network did not appear under the Manage Wireless Networks list in the Network and Sharing Center.

Home Network :: 2 Router Setup / Which Way Is Communication When Transferring

1 Virgin media home home up stairs in the home office. Ether cable running from the home hub, outside the house to the downstairs lounge with an ethernet socket on the end. Cable from the socket into a dlink router (set to operate as a hub).My reason for this setup was due to the rubbish wireless signal from the virgin hub, and the fact that I have various other bits of kit downstairs that I could use an ethernet cable with. The question is, IF my laptops are connected to the router downstairs by an ethernet cable and I want to transfer some files between them, will the data be routed through the virgin media hub upstairs before coming back to the router that both laptops are connected to downstairs? I have just done a test with 30gb worth of files and the transfer speed was 8.7MB/second, is that good for wireless?
