I have a network printer which is connected to unmanaged switch, then unmanaged switch is then connected to one of the slots on the router (to get internet access). I use the program Free IP Scanner to look for the IP so then I can find the IP address of my printer. Then I would go to Port setting of the printer and change. Every week or month I have to do this. Two things I would like to know:
1. I have a 2003 server which is not connected or active yet. it's just sitting there running but no computers or printers are connected yet. How do I make this to be a printer server and solved my issue of having keep tracing the IP for my printer?
2. If not using the server, how would I setup my printer IP address to be permanent?
I need a place to share files between a few other people that:
1. Is fast and easy, like sharing files on a local network with gigabit hardware. Why not do exactly that? (see next point)
2. Has a permanent address to access the files, as if it were hosted on a website. The reason for this is the software I will be using to point to these files does not use relative paths. If it did use relative paths, I was simply going to setup a shared dropbox with all the files, but alas, that does not work. I want this solution to be future proof, so that no matter how much I change my setup, the file paths that my software is looking at will always remain the same.
3. (optional, but preferred) Ability to automatically backup these files. Like an rsync with amazon S3 or something.I am guessing there is a simple and widely used solution to this, like an ftp setup, just not sure how it all works.
I am very newbie to networking. Although I am a newbie I managed to install Windows Server 2003 by following instructions got from Google but have not played around completely. I have 2 PCs with XP, 1 unmanaged switch. If I connect the 3 PCs (2 Xp clients + 1 server) using one unmanaged switch,
1. how do I setup the server to be able to give permanent IP to each PC (clients)?
2 how do I make the 2 PC be able to access the server?
I have a VM (Alice).I want to route ALL its traffic through a server of my own in the UK.It needs to be 'fail-safe' in the sense that the traffic must either be routed through the server, or not at all (EG with windows VPN dialer, if the VPN connection is dropped it will immediately begin routing traffic normally again - that's not acceptable*). I need to run windows on the VM, the server can be anything.The VM is connected to the internet via a linux firewall/router box in my house (set as default gateway for the VM).How can I set this up?
I have had this router for a while now and I have been experiencing these problems for forever. I can't seem to have two Xbox360's stay on OPEN NAT type permanently. I have tried port forwarding both xbox's, just my xbox, just my dad's xbox etc.. I have tried DMZ on one with or without the other on Port Forwarding. I have turned UPNP on I have it so the filtering is set to endpoint independent . I have tried without . I have even tried port triggering today. I understand that most of the cisco switches does not have a battery-supported system clock. The better solution is to setup the NTP server and let the rest of the switches to synchnorise the clock with it. How about cisco switch 4948? Does it have a battery-supported system clock?If the cisco switch 4948 is the NTP master, how I am going to make sure that the clock will not be reset after reload?
I use an online software host. They put print jobs into a queue and send them directly to my printer. I just got a new printer. The software host needs it's "External IP address" I have my internal IP address. I pinged the printer and got my internal IP address instead of the printer's. I am on a home wired network running through a modem and router.
I was previously using SDM for our Cisco 2811, and this past week installed CISCO Configuration Professional so I could have access to a bandwidth/traffic monitor.
I have successfully started the monitoring service and monitored traffic from within CCP, but it appears that if I turn off the computer I am using to monitor the traffic, it stops collecting data until I start CCP and the monitor up again.
Is there a way (maybe with IOS console commands) that I can have the monitor always running, so I can pull up, say, a week's worth of info at any time? Leaving the computer on all the time is not an option, and currently I have only a few days of data, then a big empty chunk, and then what I have collected since I started it back up today.
I want to setup my HP printer to work as wireless peripheral. stand alone. I have my local router working correctly but cannot make HP software to also work by connecting the printer. It seems I need to find WPA security passphrase.

HP wifi printers (I've had 2 over the last several years)eventually have a disconnect with my wifi router and was told (by an experienced IT guy from my last job) I should assign the printer a static address to eliminate the problem. How can I assign a static address to my printer. Here are the models Router: Belkin model F5D9231-4v1(01); Printer HP Officejet 6600. I know how to access the printer and manually enter an IP address and subnet and such, I just don't know which numbers to use where. I'm trying to wirelessly connect my HP Photosmart printer series C4780 to my mac osx even though I have the disc it is now asking me for the ip address, this doesn't seem to be anywhere on the device.

I just got a new-to-me multifunction printer that's "network ready" (ie, has an ethernet cable port.) I also got myself an asus wl-520gu router. For now the router has the factory installed firmware on it, but i could put tomato or ddwrt on it. also in my house I have a linksys router already set up with a WEP encrypted wireless SSID which me and my 5 roommates share. I guess for the purpose of this post we can call that network "Kermit" and pretend it has password "ilovepiggy" This router sits on the second floor landing in our three story house. My printer and this asus is going to be in my room, which is on the first floor. I'd like to
a) get better signal strength/speed in my room
b) network my printer so that I and others can print to it / scan from it wirelessly over the network. Can I do both things? and what would that setup be like? Would it mean making the ASUS a wireless repeater? at what point in the process and how do I add the printer?
