Best Site To Check Connected Speed

Feb 3, 2013

What is the best site or way to check connect speed? I should have a 6mbps connection but it sure doesn't work like 6mbps. When I go to the speed test web sites I get speeds all over the place, some times it's around a mbps or less and sometimes it's 6 to 8 mbps. BUT, when I watch a video often it stops as it plays faster than it downloads, something you would not expect with 6mbps. Download are general around 250kbps to the upper 300's, again not what one would expect with a 6mbps connection. I understand it's not only my connection speed that determines the download speed but the other end as well but when I was getting good speeds (a couple a years ago with Comcast before all the jacked up prices and BS they all play with speed and bandwidth) I would often see download in the mbps range, NEVER see that anymore.

Check Connection From Behind Proxy Server?

Oct 16, 2011

My computer (Win 7) is behind a proxy server at work. They have disabled the ping service. They told me it is disabled for security reasons, and everytime I try to ping a host, the connection times out. However I normally use ping as a good diagnostic to check if I have an internet connection or not. We experience frequent network problems, and I'd like to be able to at least narrow down the problem each time. Are there any other diagnostic tools/utilities I can use to test internet access? When I lose my internet connection, I'd like to be able to test if it is because my computer has lost its connecton to the proxy server, or if the proxy server has lost connection to the outside world.

Netgear DGN2200 Won't Check For Firmware Upgrade - No Connection To Internet?

Dec 20, 2012

My Netgear DGN2200 (Name NetgearCS) won't check for firmware upgrade because it says no connection to internet so unable to connect to the Netgear Servers - Yet this laptop I am currently using (wireless connection is turned off on laptop but not router) is wire connected to this same Netgear router and I have internet connection because I am able to post this enquiry. Note the Netgear DGN2200 router gets its internet connection from my Sky Router and is connected by wire to this Sky Router. FYI my iPhone is connected wirelessly to this Netgear DGN200 router (NetgearCS) and is able to connect to the internet. Do you know why my Netgear DGN2200 cannot check for firmware updates?

Mac Wireless Connection Speed

Oct 19, 2011

I have a home wireless network with a PC and a Mac.The PC surfs the net very nicely. The Mac, however, has trouble. It frequently gets stuck loading web pages and is noticeably slower than the PC. This has never been a problem before on a previous home network. The problem persists with all the types of wireless security (and with none at all) but does not occur when the Mac is attached to the router by cable.I've tried changing the DNS settings on the Mac to match those of the ISP.I disabled WPS. None of this has worked at all.The router and Mac both have the latest software versions.

D-Link DIR-600 :: Only Getting Half Of Connection Speed

Mar 23, 2013

I have been using a D-Link DIR-600 for a couple of years now. And I haven't had any problems until maybe a couple of months ago. It all started with my internet just kind of dying (mostly in the eavnings) and not working until i rebooted the router. So I call my internet provider and they tell me to update firmware and to plug the internet straight into my computer instead to rule out everything at their end. After some time I manage to update firmware. Problem with internet sill remain but is not as frequent. I left it like that for a couple of weeks, but earlier this week i checked my connection speed and it says i have only 50mb/s after the firmware update. Since i had the weekend off I plugged the internet straight into my computer and get my full internet speed at about 90mb/s. After plugging in the router again I only get around 50 again.

Terrible Wireless Network Connection Speed

Oct 28, 2012

I am having issues with the connection speed between my computer and my router. We have an airport (time capsule) router and I have a realtek rtl8192ce wireless N card, running a fresh install of windows 7, all updates up to date. The problem I'm having is that I am only connecting to the network at either 1 or 7mbps. It (very) occasionally connects at 29mbps but this is only for a split second and still nowhere near the 300mbs rated speed. I don't expect it to be at 300, however nice it would be to have that, but I would just like a decent rate as my download speed is maxing out at around 2mbs and my upload speed is twice as fast. Another desktop in the same room, next to my current on which is also connecting wirelessly is downloading around 15mb. That connection is either at 29mbps or 56mbps.It is currently connected on channel 7, there is only one other network on that channel in range. Earlier it was connected on channel 10 and there were no other networks on that channel and the connection speed is no different.

Wireless Connection Speed Reduced By Half?

Aug 3, 2012

I noticed my wireless connection was decently fast for my needs which was 13-15 up /5 down. I am in the next room from my study and around <10 ft away from the modem in the study. However today the internet was extremely slow for everyone in the house so I went to reset the modem. After resetting the modem I noticed that the internet speed went a bit up and so I used speedtest.net to see how fast the connection was in the study. The computer in the study is connected with a ethernet cable to the modem. I was amazed that the speed in the study was nearly double the amount. I understand that wireless connections are undoubtedly slower than a wired connection, but is it normal for the speed to drop by half when I am <10 ft away from the modem?

SW For Performing Scheduled Speed Tests On Internet Connection?

Jul 12, 2011

We're since long having a problem with a DSL internet connection. The connection goes down periodically, for short times, and when performing speed tests, the connection speed varies and is usually lower (0.7 Mbit/s) than what the ISP promises (1.5-2 Mbit/s). Moreover, what modem is being used seems to have an effect. Now, I want to trouble-shoot this and get some hard facts on the behaviour of the connection. I would like to do repeated speed tests over say 24 h or so. They should be done every 3 min or so (to catch short glitches).

My question is: what software tool can I use for this? I have been searching the internet for hours, downloading a handful of applications, without finding anything that I could use. There are loads of applications that log and graph the current upload and download speeds, but that's something else - I need a tool that downloads/uploads files from/to a server, in intervals specified by me (3 min), logging the result and presenting it graphically.

Video Buffering Slowly On High Speed Connection?

Internet Connection Slow Speed / Weak Signal?

Aug 31, 2011

We have cable internet through a wireless router. It seems to be the case that after we have had a router for about a year, my wife begins having trouble with her internet connection; slow speed, no connection, weak signal, etc. Resetting the router and cable modem will fix the problem, but the fix is only for a short time (an hour or a day). We purchase and install a new router, and everything is fine for about a year, then the problems re-emerge.I can't believe that a router "wears out" after a year or so, but that is certainly how it appears. My wife has a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7, I have a Mac, and our son has a Samsung with WIN 7. I don't experience these problems, and my son does not to the extent my wife does. There is obviously something going on with the Toshiba or its interface with the router, but rebooting the computer doesn't have any effect.

When I had DSL at 5Mbps, it went about 600KB/sec (which makes sense), now that I have this cable internet that's faster, the download speed is slower

LAN Connection Speed 100 Mbps - Acquiring Network Address

May 12, 2012

Recently, I am having an issue with my LAN connection. After I boot up, I get the "two computer" icon in my system tray that stays active. When I mouse over it, it says "Local Area Network Speed 100 Mbps Status - Acquiring Network Address"However, I am connected to the internet and there seems to be no connectivity problems. And it has an IP address: 192.168.1.66 This "acquiring network address" will persist forever, (although sometimes it will quit). If I right-click and do repair, the problem disappears immediately.I am running Win XP SP3 and am connected by ethernet cable to an ATT-U-verse Gateway. For what it's worth, Windows takes a very long time to boot up -- it takes a while for the icon to appear, and then the boot process completes.
