In the past couple of years, I've picked up a couple of Linksys WRT54G routers for a buck or two at flea markets. I hadn't thought about the fact that no assigned SSID or Password came with them. I downloaded the Linksys set-up files from their website and recently set up both of them for relatives. They work great but they are "unsecured networks". I'd like to change that.

Must the second wireless be connected to the internet. If yes, how? Must I take the first wireless router off the modem and connect it to the second wireless router for internet connection. (Problem with that is connection from the ISP)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just purchased an E4200 and got it up & running. Everything was fine, until I connected a Wi-Fi DVD player to it. I followed the DVD player procedure, which was to push the WPS button on the router, and then the appropriate button on the DVD player. After a few seconds, the player connected, and I successfully accessed YouTube through it.
So far, so good -- except that it turns out that the router, on its own, changed the SSID and password. When I could not get Wi-Fi access on my iPhone, I checked the Wi-Fi settings, and instead of the original SSID of the E4200 -- let's say ShadeTree -- it was changed to Cisco_WPS_xxxxx (the X's represent numbers). I started Cisco Connect, and a screen came up showing that the password had been changed from the original, and listed both the original and new passwords.
What is going on? Why would the E4200 change the SSID and password all by itself, when I connected a Wi-Fi equipped DVD player with WPS? Is this going to happen when I connect a Wi-Fi equipped TV set, or some other component? What can I do to keep the E4200 from changing the network name and password all by itself? Or am I going to have to re-program every other Wi-Fi device (iPad, iPhone, etc.) every time I add a new component?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe EA4500 web-settings application asks for a username and password. The username is "admin" and the password is my long (60 character) wpa key. I see where I can change the password but it says I'll lose all wireless connections. This doesn't make sense to me. I would think the router administration username and password are completely separate from the ssid and wpa key. This was the case with my earlier LinkSys router. I'd like a router administration username to be something other than the generic "admin" and a password that is easier than my long wpa key. I want a separate ssid and wpa key (what I currently have).
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently, I bought the E3200, and tried to configure its ports for gaming. Yet, whenever I would hit save settings, it would say my settings were saved, then return me to the settings page. But the settings would be blank. I tried downloading firmware from the website (which should say September 28), yet it still says I am running the firmware from September 1st, even after I applied the upgrade and followed through with the 50 second reboot process.
So, I guess my final question for any tech savvy person out there is "What is wrong with my router/firmware?" I am running the browser config in the most recent Firefox on the same MacBook I used to install the router, and haven't changed any settings other than the SSID and password.

However, when I tried to change the SSID to a unique name, I was unable to connect my computer to the wireless network. I have unplugged the router for 5 mins and then let it come back on and still cant get in, pressed the reset button down and let it come back up still nothing, and I have unplugged the cable modem and router for five mins and then plugged them both back up and I still can't get the router to reset to the default admin password. In the past it has worked before but now nothing I try will let me into the router interface to set up anything.

I go through the basic steps, it talkes all my information and tells me everything is good. I try to sign on the internet and it tells me my password is invalid....and YES Im sure its the right password I entered. I went to http://192.168.1.1/wireless.htm and did all the necessary instructions, and still, it doesn't work. I can change my network name and it works. As long as I leave it unprotected, everything works fine, but when I add the password, it tells me its invalid. I even used 123456 so as to make sure it was the right one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was given this router (it's my 3rd one) and cannot get the reset button to reset the password. I have run throught a 30/30/30 reset as well as just holding the button in for the standard 30 seconds.
I know the router works, as in i can ping it. It asks for a password when i go to 192.168.1.1, but *blank* and "admin" do not work. When i click the cancel button it displays a pink(salmon) screen that says "401 Unauthorized Authrization required". (all of this is when i am connected to it with an ethernet cable to #1)

I followed the basic instructions that came with the router and towards the end of the process it says detecting network settings with a % bar. The bar fills to 100% and then asks for a password. I've tried the password my DSL company gave me along with various other things like admin etc. After I enter the password I hit enter and it just asks me for the password over and over again.

I held the reset for 15 sec, 30 sec, 2 min, etc and also tried holding it and then unplugging it and then plugging it back in. I've tried everything that I have seen suggested. My problem is that I don't know what the password is to access my router's web utility thing and I need to change the IP address. With every reset attempt, I hope that the default admin password will work, but sadly no.
