Nov 13, 2012I'm thinking of making a security system for my house (and possibly selling and setting up for others) based off usb 1080p webcams. I read online the max length of a usb cable is 5m before you need a hub to act like a repeater. Could I simply buy a cat6 (or 7) cable, splice the usb into it, and then unsplice at the computer as a workaround?

Long Distance Cable - Signal Dropping?
Oct 29, 2012Our house is located up a hill and a long way (1,400ft) from the main road and we always have problems with the signal dropping on our cable internet connection. According to the line tech's that have been to our house the problem lies with the 20+ year old cable that is being used to get the cable signal from the road box to the house
I am wanting to replace that cable but from what i have read so far is that cat 5/6 cannot go the distance i require
I have looked into going with a long range wi-fi but there is no direct line of site from the road to the house and there are a million tree's in between us and the road so its not really practical .we are not needing any major amount of speed, just enough to do surfing, streaming, and the kids like to do multiplayer gaming. 7-10mbps would be great for us, before we started having problems with the cable we were only getting 4-5mbps and that was enough for what we needed

Jun 30, 2012Just about to run about 30 metres of Ethernet cable underground from one building to another. I know there's quite a few forums like this which suggest to go for cat5 mostly for the price, not sure when these were advised but cat6 doesn't seem to be too much more now...
So just wondering if it will be worth going for cat6 for a future reference if you will, ideally if products ever advance to support it. Just that I don't fancy digging up the cable in a year or so.
Of course I'd rather go for cat5e but wouldn't mind adding a bit to the budget if it's worth it?
Also does anyone know if it's any more difficult to fit the connecters to cat6e? Are they just the same as rj45?

Nov 15, 2011I just bought and received a Cat6 200ft Ethernet cable from Amazon, linkIt is going from a router to my PC and is not working. My old Ethernet cable works just fine from said router to PC. I do not know why this one is not working. I tested the cable out on my laptop and it works fine for that. I am not sure what info to post about my PC, but I am using an Asrock z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard as my lan connector.

I need to use the 5ghz antenna for the bridge i have 2 aironet 1242ag's I have 2 2.4 ghz AIR-ANT3213 antennas (planned for client access) I have 2 2.4 ghz AIR-ANT2506 (maybe useless for this)
My problem is that the range of all the listed 5 ghz antennas. None that i can find will bridge 54mb over the 5ghz radio for greater than 170ft
The closest that i can find is AIR-ANT5195. If i put these on both sides and it is outdoors line of sight, will the best i can hope for is functioning and 6mb
Are there options on 5ghz that i am missing.

I ran a speed test of the wifi on my laptop in the living room, and the internet speeds were great. Here's my problem. I'm in a 2 br condo, not a huge place maybe like 1200 Sq feet, same floor. Wifi is awesome in the living room, but in the bedroom it hangs. I still have a signal, varying for low to good, but it takes forever to open a web page, to the point where you can't use the internet. Bedroom is just down the hall.I called Verizon. They told me they can only guarantee the wifi signal 10 feet from the router, after that no promises. My frustration is that with my previous provider, which was giving me a slower internet connection, my wifi in the bedroom was fine and the router was in the exact same spot. Of course I used my own router? I know there are instructions on connecting my old router to the fios one and using my old router for wifi.
