Long Distance Cable - Signal Dropping?
Oct 29, 2012Our house is located up a hill and a long way (1,400ft) from the main road and we always have problems with the signal dropping on our cable internet connection. According to the line tech's that have been to our house the problem lies with the 20+ year old cable that is being used to get the cable signal from the road box to the house
I am wanting to replace that cable but from what i have read so far is that cat 5/6 cannot go the distance i require
I have looked into going with a long range wi-fi but there is no direct line of site from the road to the house and there are a million tree's in between us and the road so its not really practical .we are not needing any major amount of speed, just enough to do surfing, streaming, and the kids like to do multiplayer gaming. 7-10mbps would be great for us, before we started having problems with the cable we were only getting 4-5mbps and that was enough for what we needed

Feb 1, 2011I had a requirement where I have to send the internet connection over 100m.As Ethernet supports clear transmission only upto 100m, I came up with this new idea (only in papers untill now). I believe RJ11 cables (normal telephone line) would be able to carry signals over longer distance as in ADSL broadband. plug the Ethernet cable which is already connected to internet source into ADSL modem. This ADSL modem will be connected to another ADSL modem which is at a longer distance away(let us say more than 100m or so.) The output of the latter ADSL modem will be connected to a computer/router which requires an internet connection.

I would like to use 2 10 gig ints on each 6704 to form a port channel (LACP) between the 2 environments.
So far I have been unable to get the links up between 6704's.

Jun 12, 2011I use a Linksys WRT54GR router. I recently bought an iPad, and I generally use it in a room that is on the other side of the house and through many walls. When it works, it works nice. But recently, my signal has been weak, and is often dropped. Pages load slowly, or not at all after getting a could not connect to server or whatever message. However, this isnt a huge problem for my laptops when used in this room. I dont believe it is the iPad that is faulty because my iTouch also experiences difficulty sometimes. I need a way to increase the signal strength for a longer distance. I looked at a repeater, but im not quite sure what it is and how to set one up, or where to buy one.

I read that the Nexus 5000 series had a limit of ~3 km for FCOE. Does the same hold true for the 7000 series? I thought I read somehwere that the buffers were larger on the 7000 series and therefore would be able to do ~30 km.

Oct 15, 2012I am designing a network for my client where I have to implement a 10 Gig end to end connectivity. The major factor of concern from my management is about scalability (space to include more 10Gig servers as the nodes grow up). I have suggested Cisco 5596UP with 2232 PP as this gives ample amount of 10Gig ports. The setup has to be implemented across 2 different datacenters located 40 Kms apart, connected with 10Gig DC Interconnect.
I understand that Cisco Nexus 2232 is a Layer 2 Only switch and would need to communicate with parent 5K switch very frequently. Is it necessary to have the 2K and 5K pair in the same datacenter or in proximity? Is it possible to have the SFP uplinks connected to the DC interconnect? Because we have two datacenters located 40 Kms apart and having 1*Layer 3 - 5K switch at DC A with Layer 2 - 2K nexus Switch at DC B will be cost effective. We do require more 10Gig ports and not much requirement on Layer 3 usage. What are the type of communication that would be much frequent between 2K and 5K?
