Distance Between Two Wireless Mobile Nodes?

Oct 13, 2012

I am currently trying to find the method or mechanism for calculating the distance between two wireless mobile nodes.Let's say, there are 2 nodes (node B and C) coming in communication with node A. How can node A knows whether node B or node C is nearer than the other? Is it possible to find it out by using RSSI? or are there any other mechanisms to calculate the distance?

Linksys Wireless Router :: Can't Ping Between Wired Nodes On E2000

Jan 11, 2011

Just replaced my older Cisco router with an E2000 and now none of the connected PCs can ping each other.   I have two wired and two wireless nodes on the 192.168.1.X subnet (defaults) using DHCP.  All nodes can access the Internet with no problems, but none of them can see each other -- no ping, no Network Neighborhood, nothing.   Since this all worked fine before I swapped routers and I've made no changes on any of the nodes, I presume this is something about the router.

I've tried all the usual troubleshooting steps (spent 10 years working as Systems Engineering in IP networking) - no luck.   I've also tried various settings of the router (e.g. turned off SPI) but no luck either.

my new router doesn't block connections between attached PCs on the same subnet ....

P.S.  One strange observation : using Wireshark I can see the pinging node (.137) ARP for the destination IP (.102), and the ARP reply is sent by the destination node (.102) , but it looks like the Echo Request never makes it to the target machine -- i.e. I think the router is blocking it.

When Nodes Send Data Through A Switch Does It Become Encrypted

Dec 1, 2012

Packet Sniffing is mainly used on non-switched networks to display data that was supposed to be sent to nodes other than yourself, allowing you to see information such as usernames and passwords etc.My question is, why can this technology not be used as easily on a switched network? When nodes send data through a switch does it become encrypted?

Does Mixed Powerline AV 500 And 200 Network Slow Down 500 Nodes

Aug 30, 2011

I have two netgear powerline AV 500 ethernet adapters that give me near ideal internet access on my media computer (FIOS 25/25mpbs tests out at 8ms 25.4/24.7) and perhaps 100-140mbps to my router, printer, drive, etc. I now want to add a few wifi points and instead of having the mess of a powerline adapter + a wifi router I think it will be neater to have an all in one solution. Most of the ones that I find are 200mbps, however. I know that 500 is backwards compatible, but will a mixed solution slow everything down like it can for a mixed wireless g/n network?

D-link Dir-655 :: Mac Filtering - Only Want Wifi Filtered / Not Wired Lan Nodes

Mar 19, 2011

All 3 previous wireless routers I've had were all LinkSys routers and I had to overcome a learning curve since configuring this DIR-655 is slightly different..What I want to do is allow only the WiFi MAC addresses that I choose to access the network. It seems to me that in order to accomplish this I have to include all of my wired LAN devices' MAC filters as well. I can see having MAC filtering for WiFi devices, however why do I need to add my wired LAN devices MAC addresses?  I'm not going to allow just anyone to walk into my home off the street and plug a computer into the network via CAT-5 ethernet cable, so isn't there a way to accomplish just the WiFi allow list and the heck with the wired nodes?  The LinkSys routers I used in the past allowed me to allow the MAC filter for WiFi devices only.  Is there a way around having to allow all MAC's and just allowing the wifi's?

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54GL - Handle Far Distance With Fast Speeds And Stability?

Aug 24, 2012

I have a client family who will be moving into a big one floor (but on a giant slope hill as if it had two floors) house. About 88 feet seems to be the longest distance from a small room with the new cable modem. This is based on Google Maps' aerial shot: [URL] Longest Distance FromACableModemRoom.jpg (right side/east is a huge hill with trees). Will an old wireless Linksys WRT54GL router be able to handle this far distance with fast speeds and stability? If not, then which wireless routers can do it? It would be nice to have third party firmware options like Linksys WRT54GL routers. Also, fast speed like gigabits for fast local file transfers between computers in the big house! 100mb/sec is slow these days! Stability and support are important too. The routers doesn't need to be the latest too

BT Router Won't Send Over Long Distance Cable

Feb 27, 2012

I have an old White BT router (from the UK)

Also a 60m ethernet cable. It won't send a signal far enough to be picked up by an ethernet port on another computer at that distance via cable.

However, a modern Zyxel Router will chuck it through that length of cable OK

way to get the BT router (v1 or 1.5) to do this ?

Long Distance Cable - Signal Dropping?

Oct 29, 2012

Our house is located up a hill and a long way (1,400ft) from the main road and we always have problems with the signal dropping on our cable internet connection. According to the line tech's that have been to our house the problem lies with the 20+ year old cable that is being used to get the cable signal from the road box to the house

I am wanting to replace that cable but from what i have read so far is that cat 5/6 cannot go the distance i require

I have looked into going with a long range wi-fi but there is no direct line of site from the road to the house and there are a million tree's in between us and the road so its not really practical .we are not needing any major amount of speed, just enough to do surfing, streaming, and the kids like to do multiplayer gaming. 7-10mbps would be great for us, before we started having problems with the cable we were only getting 4-5mbps and that was enough for what we needed

Using DSL Modem To Transmit Longer Distance Instead Of Ethernet?

Feb 1, 2011

I had a requirement where I have to send the internet connection over 100m.As Ethernet supports clear transmission only upto 100m, I came up with this new idea (only in papers untill now). I believe RJ11 cables (normal telephone line) would be able to carry signals over longer distance as in ADSL broadband. plug the Ethernet cable which is already connected to internet source into ADSL modem. This ADSL modem will be connected to another ADSL modem which is at a longer distance away(let us say more than 100m or so.) The output of the latter ADSL modem will be connected to a computer/router which requires an internet connection.
