Networking :: Software For Quickly Copying Large Amounts Of Data Over Cat5e
Oct 20, 2011
I'm looking for some software for copying large amounts of data from a Mac OS X machine to a Windows 7 machine over a Cat5e cable with IPv4 connectivity?
Another way I could ask this question is what IPv4 protocol will have the lowest overhead so that I may copy large amounts of data the fastest?
Also, would that mean it's a low-level protocol, like transport layer?

We are having issue with all our Cicso wireless devices (AIR-AP1142N-N-K9) when connected to Windows 8 Pro users. When copying large files, the connection changes to limited access. The initial connection to the access points is also slow for both windows 7 and windows 8 pcs.

I transfered both shares to the NAS last weekend, and plan on configuring the shares to be hosted on the NAS this weekend. In order to do this, I need to copy all of the changed files to the NAS in the most efficient way possible. I was thinking of using either xcopy or robocopy. What do you think? Is there a command in either one that would allow me to copy only changed data? I don't want to wait another 18 hours worth of copying to move all the information over AGAIN

For my network the way it is setup is one building has the 2 main servers.simple wireless router and a few laptop that connect to it. a Wii and some other devices, all of them share media etc with no issue. Internet is not a problem either. One of the servers has a PCI wireless card and connects to another network.(network2)network 2 is able to share and play all the media off the service lets say 80% of the time.It also has a different internet provider and internet connection is not a problem but the wireless signal strength is low , (2 bars) or -55 to -82 it seams to jump around at.If you try to stream or play too much media it freezes on you. or if 2 devices on network 2 try to play something it freezes as well sometimes though when the signal is good -55 ish there is no issues. There is alot of wireless traffic in the area, i cant change that.and dont really want to buy a ranger extender or something $20 is what I have for parts if anything. If I were to put a 2nd wireless card in server 2 or Server 1 even. Also both the wireless router on network 2 and the pci card on server 2 are physically as close as hey can get.

My setup is as follows:
Linksys E2500 as DHCP client, all default network settings (MTU auto configured to 1500), connected to:
ZTE 831 II ADSL2+ modem in bridged mode
The issue is that whenever any large file is downloaded over HTTP, the download stops after about 4 minutes and never resumes. This results in:
1) HTTP downloads of anything > ~80 MB failing; tried using several browsers and CURL, all with the same results
2) iOS downloads in iTunes timing out
3) YouTube videos stalling every few minutes
Interestingly, Netflix streaming works OK. Perhaps that's because the protocol for Netflix is not a single large download but a bunch of smaller ones, but that's conjecture.
This all occurs over both wireless and wired connections to the E2500.
If I connect my Mac directly to the ZTE modem, I don't have the problem.

I am attempting to create a mass upgrade server for some of our more standardized equipment since our vender cannot upgrade them pre-shipping for us, we've got to do them on our own. This means using a terribly organized wizard written in what appears to be Java...
I have an aversion to Windows and felt that I could accomplish the same thing using expect scripts and a Gentoo Linux server; now all I need is to set my Cisco 3550 (c3550-ipservicesk9-mz.122-44.SE6.bin) to have each port on it's own VLAN, except for fa0/1 which will be a trunk port to communicate with all ports as well as the server.

I have two ASA 5510 in an Active/Active failover configuration; On the first ASA I have a license for five security contexts, on the second one I have the default two. On the pair I configured seven security contexts and everything works as expected; so far so good. Let's suppose now that the first ASA (the one with the license for 5 contexts) goes up in smoke; all the contexts migrate to the surviving firewall and life is still good. But what happens if, for some reason, I need to reboot the second ASA before the first one is repaired? My guess is that it will come up with just its own license for two contexts and that I will not be able to operate all my virtual firewalls.

I have purchased a new home where cat5e was run from several locations throughout the house to the basement. Unfortunately, the runs were not marked. I know you can short one end of each cable and measure (voltage resistance?) at the other end in the basement to identify it. I need the process and equipment required so I can wire my home. The cables are not terminated.

I'm wiring the house with CAT6 solid cable. Can I use CAT5e wall sockets?
Are there actually any differences between CAT5e rated sockets and CAT6 rated sockets, aside from the latter being vastly overpriced?

I have CAT5e running through out the house. They all start at a 4x10 telecom punchdown module and end with non standard jacks. When I unscrewed a few wallplates, only the orange, white orange, blue, white blue are connected. The greens and browns are snipped off. I don't much care if I have a telephone or not (my cell phone is my only phone), I'm thinking of pulling all the cat5e off the module and attaching RJ45 plugs on them. Seeing that only the wires I mentioned above are connected at the wallplates, do I need to terminate all the wires on the RJ45 plug or only those four?I'm not planning on going up to a 1gb connection right now because I only have 20mb service anyways. Also, will I still received data only using those four wires?

I have a house with a Leviton Enhanced Infraestructure Platform that distributes cat5e wiring to multiple outlets throughout the house. The problem is: Some cables will not transmit the Ethernet (internet) signal, but when I connect a phone line to it, it works. So the cable integrity is fine, but somehow connecting the internet router to it will not make it work.

I just purchased a Belkin prepmium CAT5e networking cable and plugged it into an internet wall jack and hooked it up to my ps3 and the connection won't work. Does it have to be hooked up to a router? Is a CAT5e cable the same as ethernet? or will I need to buy a different cable?

Just about to run about 30 metres of Ethernet cable underground from one building to another. I know there's quite a few forums like this which suggest to go for cat5 mostly for the price, not sure when these were advised but cat6 doesn't seem to be too much more now...
So just wondering if it will be worth going for cat6 for a future reference if you will, ideally if products ever advance to support it. Just that I don't fancy digging up the cable in a year or so.
Of course I'd rather go for cat5e but wouldn't mind adding a bit to the budget if it's worth it?
Also does anyone know if it's any more difficult to fit the connecters to cat6e? Are they just the same as rj45?

I am trying to connect CAT5e riser cable to a GE #76536 network and phone wall plate. The problem I am having is the CAT5e cable has 4 twisted pairs of wires as follows: blue/white, green/white, orange/white and brown/white. The wall plate connection has 8 distinct colors; blue, white, green, orange, yellow, black, red and brown. (or at least that's what they look like to me)None of the white wires from the CAT5e cable have any striping. They are all solid white. I've found color charts for matching striped wires, but I am at a loss to figure out how to connect these white wires to the proper terminals

Currently have wireless router to internet with pc's all connected in home network. Is it possible to put a cat5e/6 cable between two client PC's for a temporary boost in speed for for accessing shared files between these two machines.(i.e. 1Gbit rather than 56Mbit.)Both PC's would still want individual connections to the router and internet, but how do you make sure accessing shared files goe's through the faster ethernet cable rather than the router?

My parents bought a new computer today. My mom called me up today and asked me if I could transfer some stuff from the old computer to the new computer. I do not have a flash drive or an external hard drive, or jump drive.etc. So I was hoping I could just connect the two computers with an ethernet cable, and create a network.
Is this possible, or do you need additional equipment. I do not have a router, so if I create a network it has to be done with wires. So is it possible to create a network with nothing but an ethernet cable? Or is there another way I can get my moms i tunes transferred over?

I can't seem to access the Net when transferring large files between my desktop (WinXP SP3, 100Mbps net card) and my laptop (Win7, 54Mbps WiFi). I have an EDIMAX BR-6228nC 150 Mbps broadband router to which my desktop is wired and the laptop connects through WiFi. The speeds never go above 2.5MBps, so there should be plenty of bandwidth left for Internet use. My router config confirms that there's no Internet connection while transferring the files
