View 2 RepliesWe are using D-Link DSS-16+ Ethernet Hub Switch and the broadband modem (1Mbps) is directly connected to the hub and it's currently working. Now we have a D-Link Ethernet Router DIR-100 (got it free when we bought the PCs) and an extra broadband modem (from the our home) and I was planning to add it in our shop. I will still be using our current network connection, but I was planning to add the router and that extra modem for the server. I want to use the modems separately; the first one for the 14 computers and the extra one for the server. how to config them?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm planning to build a home network total of 11 computers including a server the other 10 units as client..i have a wireless router with 4 ports & a 8 port switch,i have read it before that i can connect my switch to 1 of the ports of my router and it can use my internet connections. anyways i was wondering if i can still use the other ports of my router as i would like to connect my server directly to the router and not on the switch so that i will be able to connect all the 11 units on my network, and also control it through my server using a client software.
View 3 Replies View Relatedon my home network I currently only run an Airlink101 AR675W router. We have a couple issues with this. The router for one is in my basement and there are points in my house that have low signal strength, especially upstairs in the far corners of the home. Second is I am currently running my home PC as a media center but it is set-up wirlessly so streaming is clunky and jittery. Also on this network is 3 X-box's wired, a PS3 running wirless, 2 PC's wired in, 2 wirless laptops and the afore mentioned wirless PC. A lot of weight for the network. What I want to do is move the router upstairs, hardwire it into my wireless PC (the one doing the streaming) and connect a second router (an identical make and model I am buying this weekend) downstairs which will be basically used as an "expansion" of the wirless and a switch for the hardwired devices downstairs. would this be better than simply moving the wirless router upstairs (hardwiring my PC) and putting a 5 or 8 port switch in downstairs for the X-box's and 2 wired PC's there?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, using a standard off the shelf UNMANAGED gigabit switch (just a cheapie), I have a scenario that I need to know about before I go and buy a whole lot of equipment.Ok so let's start off and say it's a perfect world and the workstations connect at a full 100 Mb/s and the server connects at 1000 Mb/s.So I'm looking at having say, four or five workstations connected to the gigabit switch (at 100Mb/s) and also a gigabit connection from the switch to the server. In this scenario, taking into account everything I've said above, would each of the workstations get a full 100 Mb/s to the server, or would everything be limited to 100 Mb/s total? I could see potential for the server to only talk to one of the workstations at a time and only at 100 Mb/s, but hopefully all four could communicate to the server simultaneously.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIts just a basic question, I have a FS726T switch, and wanted to know how the clan thing should work.
Group A are ports 1-8
Group B are ports 9-16
Group C are ports 17-24
Internet is on port 26
I want each group seperate so 3 vlans... but does port 26 need to be in all 3 vlans for.them to receive internet? Is it possible to have 1 port in 3 vlans?
Would that keep them from seeing each other and still access the internet?
I have setup an Asus RT n16 with 3 computers that support gigabit ethernet and a media server on one floor. On the other floor I have set up a fast ethernet switch (connected to my asus router) which is connected to several fast ethernet enabled computers.
Would the fast ethernet devices slow down the entire gigabit networking to 100mbps connections on my floor - similar to how a wireless n network running at 300mpbs must slow down to 54mbps when a wireless g device is connected to it?
8 Port Gigabit Switch, HP 1810-8G, Netgear GS108Tv2 and Dell PowerConnect 2808, which one is better for LACP Link Aggregation?
The Netgear GS108Tv2 has more function than the other two, but I don't know the Netgear is stable or not?
I got a retired Zyxel Zywall USG200 from work. Its working just subs ran out. Was thinking of putting it on my home network, any reason not to? I'm a sys admin, not network engineer, so while I'm capable I'm not an ace with this type of equipment.. Which is why I want to mess with it. I'm currently RTFM and it seems pretty straight forward. If it seems like a viable piece of equipment I'd like to use it full time.
How bad can I break the internets and subject myself to the wrath of my wife's downed internet connection =D if I plug it in between modem and the switch?

If I have two servers, one running Windows Server 2003, and one running Ubuntu 10, what would be the best way to 'map' one's drive to another? Either way is fine. They are each in a different state, and each have an external IP. I just need to do some processing on the Ubuntu server, then write the file either to its own drive, and have the web server (Windows) read it, or, have it write to the Windows HDD, and have Windows read it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedClient has a Dell T310 SBS 2008 box with 3 workstations running Windows 7 Professional.
Network is currently like this
Westell DSL Modem > Belkin Router (consumer crap) > Dell Powerconnect 2816 > server > workstations
I used the wizards on SBS to configure the internet, add the users, connect the computers, etc.
We are having intermittent internet problems. The only problem in the server SYSTEM eventlog is "Cannot connect to DNS server". At first I thought it was a server DNS issue so I changed the maxcacheTTL to 3 days. However, I noticed that I couldn't get into the Belkin configuration so I had to manually reset the router and everything worked fine. One thing to note is that the SBS server is handling DHCP and DNS, and in the router configuration there isn't an option to not use an alternate config or the ISP. Could this be causing the problem?
I don't do this as my day job, so I need some good fixes or things to look for. The fix right now is to power cycle the router.
I have just had my broadband upgraded to FTTC which means my router has had to change. Previously I was using a Thomson TG585v7 ADSL thingy provided by my ISP. One nice thing about that router was that it would act as a local DNS and allow me to find my other machines on the network by using <hostname>.lan instead of IP addresses.
I've now switched to a Linksys WRT320N ethernet router which connects to my fibre modem, and which I've updated to the latest firmware (1.0.04). I have 2 machines on the network which I regularly want to connect to each other; one is running Windows 7 and the other is running OS X Lion.
The problem I'm having is that I'm unable to connect to my Win7 machine from the OS X machine using the Win7 machine's name. However, I'm able to ping the OS X machine from my Win7 machine using the hostname.
I have two Dell latitude xpi computers that I am trying to get to the internet. Both work well except for making the connection to the internet. The w95 computer is using version 4.0a. I am using a Netgear ma401 pcmcia card. When looking at the the signal strenght it says excellent and everything seems go until you click IE icon (5.5). I comes back stating that it could not connect. The same is true for the w98SE machine. Same wifi card and same results. The card is good and the computer is good, but I have not set something correctly.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a question regarding the network setup. I have 3 pieces of network hardware and a fast dsl connection. The hardware is:
- DSL Modem from my provider with static IP connection (CISCO - don't know the symbol)
- DSL Router (edimax ar-7084a)
- Switch (Hewlett-Packard JD871A)
Now the task is to create a LAN network so all my computers can talk together and have a internet connection shared between them. When I connect Modem to Router and then 4 CPUs to router, it is working fine. The problem is that the router has only 4 ports and that it is 100Mbit slow. I would like to use the HP switch for the LAN setup (1Gbit) and then connect the switch to router and router to modem. But it doesn't work I cannot establish internet connection this way. I'm setting all the settings in my router but it doesn't work as it was in simple setup modem->router->cpu. when I add switch to this, the setup is going berserk.Problem is that I would like to create a LAN only between computers using switch. I have other computers that I want to conect to the router directly and don't see the computers using switch.
Can we connect different networks using switch without a router
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a very basic version of XP on my old laptop (Gateway MT3707).After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I found them, and installed them. After installing the correct drivers for wireless internet I was able to pull up the list and find my network on it.When double clicking on our wireless network it asks for a network key (also called WEP key or WPA key). Now we have a password for our network, but after an exhausting amount of tries that won't work. I not sure if that is what its looking for. In our apartment we run mac OSX, windows vista, etc., but usually the password for the network is satisfactory. I have never ran into this problem.I hate to be a noob, but I don't know where to go from here.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy goal is to have my modem in the basement connect to a switch (D-Link 10/100/1000 8 port) so it can split wired connections to 6 different computers. One of those wired connections will be connected to a wireless router (D-link DIR655) on the 2nd floor.
How would I connect all this up? How would I set this up for each router?
Can a router connect to a switch to gain additional ports (to both access the internet AND to maintain an internal / home network)?IP line to house, connected to modem, connected to 4-port router, connected to 8-port switch. Now, each of six rooms in my house has one Cat-5e (RJ-45) jack whose run terminates to the switch. In some of these rooms, I need two wired devices (wireless isn't an option for the devices). Can I use the LAN port of a spare, wireless router (to also use as an access point for cell phones, etc) to plug into the jack and increase the number of ports in that room to have a functional LAN and WAN? I have read tons of info on plugging switches into routers to increase the number of ports, but not the other way around. Plus, ripping open walls to expand the network isn't feasible either. My other thought, would be to replace the switch with another (2nd) router, by connecting the 1st and 2nd routers together, and have the runs terminate to the open LAN ports of both routers --= and then expand the ports in those rooms by also using additional, spare wireless routers.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn my main office, I have a cable modem which is connected to my main E4200 router. All of my equipment (except my Ooma) is served by the E4200. The E4200 broadcasts a wireless network. In my basement, I have a Wii / entertainment center. The E4200 signal from upstairs isn't strong enough to stream video.
I bought the WET610N and have successfully set it up to interact with the E4200 wirelss network. I can hardwire my laptop to the WET610N and verify the internet works greatHowever, the Wii must connect over wireless. I have other equipment in the basement which would benefit from an internet connection. So, I want to A) connect the ESXS88W 10/100 8-port workgroup switch I have to the WET610N *AND* also broadcast a wireless signal in my basement (assuming the wireless network I see in the basement is the same "old" one from upstairs which has not benefited from the WET610N).
How can I set up my WRT54G2 to broadcast a wireless signal in the basement so that it leverages the E4200 signal served by the WET610N, while also having the workgroup switch offer hardwired connections to my other equipment (like Dish Network receiver)? It doesn't seem to work by just plugging the WRT54G2 into the workgroup switch.
I am having my internet connection in my living room as my co ax is not in any other room. (timewarner internet). So since i cant have all servers and all in living room (wired machines), i want to move the whole setup to my lab room. I want to buy a wds supported wireless router in the bedroom and join it to my wifi of the home - the router will then output to the wired machines.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHaving some serious problems on the networking front here at home. I have 3 PC's and 2 Xbox's that run constantly. Our Internet bandwidth is Insight's 50.0 which is 50Mb download speed 5Mb upload speed. The problem we're having is this. Ever since we upgraded from dual 20Mb lines on a Cisco RV042 to a 50Mb on a DIR-655 we've been having latency issues. I have everything turned off in the router. It's basically there to give out IP numbers and thats it. All security is handled from the PC's themselves. Bandwidth tests are fine, I sustain download speeds above 7MB/s using download managers. But pings are terrible. Xbox live is terrible, PC online gaming is terrible. Pingtest.com is terrible. Only when behind routers. I've tried it behind 3 seperate routers. The DIR-655, the Belkin f5d8236 that insight provided me, and the cisco rv042 originally used for dual wan routing. all of which are met with serious failure.
If I plug directly in to the modem pings are fine. Add a router and pings go to shit.
I`m trying to set up a relative`s Internet up so that it is wireless; currently the router takes signal from cable, not phone, is wired only, and has just one ethernet port. I know the number of ports can easily be expanded using a switch, but is it possible to buy a piece of hardware which could be plugged into the router to broadcast a wireless signal as well? I have looked quite thoroughly for anything that could do this but I`m pretty new to networking
