Networking Router To Switch Connections?

Feb 21, 2011

I'm planning to build a home network total of 11 computers including a server the other 10 units as client..i have a wireless router with 4 ports & a 8 port switch,i have read it before that i can connect my switch to 1 of the ports of my router and it can use my internet connections. anyways i was wondering if i can still use the other ports of my router as i would like to connect my server directly to the router and not on the switch so that i will be able to connect all the 11 units on my network, and also control it through my server using a client software.

Hub Switch And Router Networking?

Feb 25, 2011

We are using D-Link DSS-16+ Ethernet Hub Switch and the broadband modem (1Mbps) is directly connected to the hub and it's currently working. Now we have a D-Link Ethernet Router DIR-100 (got it free when we bought the PCs) and an extra broadband modem (from the our home) and I was planning to add it in our shop. I will still be using our current network connection, but I was planning to add the router and that extra modem for the server. I want to use the modems separately; the first one for the 14 computers and the extra one for the server. how to config them?

D-Link DIR-601 / Multiple Connections With Wireless LAN Without Networking?

Nov 9, 2011

what I want to do is setup a Tablet for use and share my one Internet connection with it and my desktop. I do not want the desktop and the Tablet networked with each other. there is a Tablet on Newegg: Velocity Micro Cruz Reader R103. the details say it's communication is 802.11b/g Wireless LAN. so I copy and paste that on Newegg and get: D-Link DIR-601 Wireless Broadband Router. not sure if that's what i need or what the configuration would be but I kind of know how to set it up.my question is can I connect a Desktop and a Tablet or any PC device to a router like this with out networking the individual units with each other? just to where it serves as more a splitter. is there any wireless alternatives to only "split" the Internet connection and not network the desktop and Tablet?

Home Network :: Multiple Router Networking Versus Adding A Switch?

Apr 22, 2011

on my home network I currently only run an Airlink101 AR675W router. We have a couple issues with this. The router for one is in my basement and there are points in my house that have low signal strength, especially upstairs in the far corners of the home. Second is I am currently running my home PC as a media center but it is set-up wirlessly so streaming is clunky and jittery. Also on this network is 3 X-box's wired, a PS3 running wirless, 2 PC's wired in, 2 wirless laptops and the afore mentioned wirless PC. A lot of weight for the network. What I want to do is move the router upstairs, hardwire it into my wireless PC (the one doing the streaming) and connect a second router (an identical make and model I am buying this weekend) downstairs which will be basically used as an "expansion" of the wirless and a switch for the hardwired devices downstairs. would this be better than simply moving the wirless router upstairs (hardwiring my PC) and putting a 5 or 8 port switch in downstairs for the X-box's and 2 wired PC's there?

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G2 - Connect Ethernet Switch (for Hardwired Connections)?

Dec 29, 2011

In my main office, I have a cable modem which is connected to my main E4200 router. All of my equipment (except my Ooma) is served by the E4200. The E4200 broadcasts a wireless network. In my basement, I have a Wii / entertainment center. The E4200 signal from upstairs isn't strong enough to stream video.

I bought the WET610N and have successfully set it up to interact with the E4200 wirelss network. I can hardwire my laptop to the WET610N and verify the internet works greatHowever, the Wii must connect over wireless. I have other equipment in the basement which would benefit from an internet connection. So, I want to A) connect the ESXS88W 10/100 8-port workgroup switch I have to the WET610N *AND* also broadcast a wireless signal in my basement (assuming the wireless network I see in the basement is the same "old" one from upstairs which has not benefited from the WET610N).

How can I set up my WRT54G2 to broadcast a wireless signal in the basement so that it leverages the E4200 signal served by the WET610N, while also having the workgroup switch offer hardwired connections to my other equipment (like Dish Network receiver)? It doesn't seem to work by just plugging the WRT54G2 into the workgroup switch.

Networking Limitations Of A Consumer-Grade Switch

Dec 24, 2011

So, using a standard off the shelf UNMANAGED gigabit switch (just a cheapie), I have a scenario that I need to know about before I go and buy a whole lot of equipment.Ok so let's start off and say it's a perfect world and the workstations connect at a full 100 Mb/s and the server connects at 1000 Mb/s.So I'm looking at having say, four or five workstations connected to the gigabit switch (at 100Mb/s) and also a gigabit connection from the switch to the server. In this scenario, taking into account everything I've said above, would each of the workstations get a full 100 Mb/s to the server, or would everything be limited to 100 Mb/s total? I could see potential for the server to only talk to one of the workstations at a time and only at 100 Mb/s, but hopefully all four could communicate to the server simultaneously.

I'm a sys admin, not network engineer, so while I'm capable I'm not an ace with this type of equipment.. Which is why I want to mess with it. I'm currently RTFM and it seems pretty straight forward. If it seems like a viable piece of equipment I'd like to use it full time.
How bad can I break the internets and subject myself to the wrath of my wife's downed internet connection =D if I plug it in between modem and the switch?

Networking :: Wireless Networking On MT3707

Oct 23, 2011

I recently installed a very basic version of XP on my old laptop (Gateway MT3707).After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I found them, and installed them. After installing the correct drivers for wireless internet I was able to pull up the list and find my network on it.When double clicking on our wireless network it asks for a network key (also called WEP key or WPA key). Now we have a password for our network, but after an exhausting amount of tries that won't work. I not sure if that is what its looking for. In our apartment we run mac OSX, windows vista, etc., but usually the password for the network is satisfactory. I have never ran into this problem.I hate to be a noob, but I don't know where to go from here.

Networking :: Fixing Networking With DIR-655

Mar 2, 2011

Having some serious problems on the networking front here at home. I have 3 PC's and 2 Xbox's that run constantly. Our Internet bandwidth is Insight's 50.0 which is 50Mb download speed 5Mb upload speed. The problem we're having is this. Ever since we upgraded from dual 20Mb lines on a Cisco RV042 to a 50Mb on a DIR-655 we've been having latency issues. I have everything turned off in the router. It's basically there to give out IP numbers and thats it. All security is handled from the PC's themselves. Bandwidth tests are fine, I sustain download speeds above 7MB/s using download managers. But pings are terrible. Xbox live is terrible, PC online gaming is terrible. Pingtest.com is terrible. Only when behind routers. I've tried it behind 3 seperate routers. The DIR-655, the Belkin f5d8236 that insight provided me, and the cisco rv042 originally used for dual wan routing. all of which are met with serious failure.

If I plug directly in to the modem pings are fine. Add a router and pings go to shit.

Wifi (wrt54gs) Router Woes In Office Networking?

Sep 21, 2012

I have a small office with a Desktop PC onvereted into a File server which has licenses for couple of multi user softwares residing. Further I have about 10 Laptops and 3 Desktops. My server has two NIC's. A linksys wireless (wrt54gs) router is connected to one NIC and a Netgear WL router is connected to another NIC. I have enabled MAC Address access restriction on both the routers.5 laptops get connected to the Wifi Linksys router. And to the Negear Router 5 more laptops + a Netwrok printer with static IP and a switch (unmanaged) is conneted. 3 desktops (all with static IP) in turn get connected to this switch.Iam not able to give print from a Laptop connected to the Linksys router. However the print comes out if I give a print out from a laptop connected to the negear router. The Linksys Router assigns IP starting from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.25 and the netgear assigns IP from 192.168.0.101 to 192.168.0.125. Further at times the laptops connected to the Netgear routers are not able to obtain the license for the softwares from the server (in variably Iam forced to work in Educational mode on those laptops)(I created a netwrok bridge in the server between the two NICs)But by enabling a bridge there is one more problem I notice..... When I type IPCONFIG /all on a laptop connected to the Netgear ruter (having gateway 192.168.0.100), I notice that the IP number assigned is that of the one from Linksys, and the Gateway is shown as (192.168.0.75 - the Linksys router gateway)....

Networking :: 2640 Router Stops Responding Intermittently After A While With ADSL

Aug 18, 2012

I am trying to set up ADSL and WiFi in a country home. I have bought a DLink DSL-2640 modem-router for this. The device is connected to the ADSL, everything works fine. The device has a WiFi AP capability - I have set up the WiFi and I am accessing the network from 2 different iPads, 2 PCs and an Android phone. After a few hours of work I begin to notice that one of the iPads is taking to long to load pages - it even can't load the router's web interface. This goes on for 5-10 minutes or so, then it passes away. Same stuff happens to Android, but rarer. PC has this problem occasionally also, but rarest of all.

I am assuming that this is a problem of the device - ADSL and WiFi might be too much for it. I got a dedicated WiFi router (TP-Link WR740N), connected it to the DLink and turned off WiFi on the D-Link.

Same stuff happens. After a while the Internet stops responding - I can't load the router's web interface. Goes on for 2-10 minutes and passes. WiFi is functional, I can disconnect and connect a device, device obtains an address through DHCP.

I updated both devices to the latest official firmware. I tried switching WiFi channels, switched the router to g-only mode. EM interference is very unlikely since it's a country home and there are no wifi networks around.
