Pinging Non-existent Devices On Subnet?
Mar 7, 2013
I'm currently taking a networking course and was having some difficulty answering the following questions and could use a little clarification.Question: When pinging a non-existent device on your subnet, why doesn't the source node issue a ICMP echo request. My thoughts on this was because there was not a receiving node therefore any ICMP packets were not issued.Question 2: when pinging another non-existent device but not on your subnet, why doesn't the source node issue a ICMP echo request.

We had a problem where a 4500 would not ping directly connected devices dispite being able to telnet to them and also view them in CDP. It was mostly forwarding packets between devices but some hosts could not connect to others.

One is my HOME the other is my CARAVAN SITE. both networks are working fine independently, the problem occurs when i join the networks togetherI need to connect the said networks together in order to view my IP cameras which are dotted all around the campsite, i need to be able to view these from HOME.The problems i am having is DHCP servers are stealing clients from the other sides and directing them to the wrong gateway.please see below network map (these routers are all running DDWRT)Below is another network map which someone on another forum told me to do but its still not working. (DHCP servers are still clashing and still stealing clients)by the way, on both of the network maps all routers are connected with the LAN interface. someone told me to connect certain routers with WAN and it didn't work, or it was not explained correctly. Also please note that assigning clients with Static IP's is completely out of the question due to most of the clients being campers who come and go.

I have a Netgear modem/router [DGN1000] (192.168.0.x) that serves as a the router for network 1 and also as the internet gateway. I have a Cisco [E4200] (192.168.1.x) router connected to the Netgear modem via the WAN port on the Cisco. This serves as the router for network 2.
DHCP is turned on for both routers. I can access all devices on network 1 using any device o network 2 including the Netgear modem configuration page, but I cant access any device on network 2 from network 1. Is it possible to have access to devices from both networks? [URL]

I have a Linksys WAG120N Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router. The firmware version is V1.00.12.I run a Windows machine attached to the router which has a certain sub network address. On that same machine I run a Virtual Machine with Linux which has its own address, 192.168.1.102. I've been noticing that whenever I shut down either machine and then turn them back on later, they acquire another address, which makes it annoying for me to make them communicate between each other (by, for example, trying to load a webpage hosted on the VM from the physical machine) without knowing the actual address, which, as I said earlier, seems to change every time.
I'd like to know if there's a way (with my router model) to configure it so that the sub network address of both machines remains the same, no matter whether or not they've been shut down and restarted.

I have 4 x 2960 switches in a remote site. These are managed by an NMS in our DC, the NMS IP ends in 35.100 with a /23 mask.
When they are first booted, the switches are visable to the NMS, but after a week or 2, 3 of them drop connection to it. If you reboot them again they are fine. You are able to log onto them form thier local router and use a Radius server which is in the same subnet as the NMS.
The odd thing is, whilst they can not ping the NMS, they are able to ping any other addresses in the 34.0/23 range.
The config on the one that does not lose connection is the same as the other 3 and I have also rebooted the NMS.

An 1841 is conencted to the internet by DSL, it works fine. I have added it to the 10.98.8.x subnet off a 3750 switch. When I connect other devices to the same switch port, I can ping/browse to them fine, but when I connect the 1841 I can only ping it from the 3750, not another subnet connected to the same router. I've got an issue with one of the businesses I work with. Just yesterday a PC had this problem, and this morning one more followed suit. These PC's were given a 192.168.35.x IP address when configured to take whatever the router gives them, however our Sonicwall TZ190 is configured to hand out a 192.168.20.x IP address over DHCP. There were no secondary IP configurations on the client workstation, no virii, nothing out of the ordinary. When I set a static IP on the client it works fine, but when I put it back to automatic it will once again give itself a 192.168.35.x IP (and subsequently have a gateway of .35.1, somehow). I've checked the router, there's nothing on the LAN side of the network interfaces besides 192.168.20.x.

This wasn't the case on the previously use ACE software. To my recollection the command show script code has worked successfully before on the same ACE software. Not 100% sure though, but it definitely worked on the previous software we ran on the ACE.

What I am trying to do is I have one switch with say a 10.1.9.1 sub-net I need to have one of the ports to be trucked with two vlans one for DSL and the other for a local connection with the sub-net of 10.1.5.1 both of the sub-nets are configured in the core as 9 and 5 so I have port 0 set up as a trunk and it is set up as ge-0/0/0.0 vlan_5, vlan_192 on the 10.1.9.1 subnet switch. The DSL is working but the local is not pulling a 10.1.5.1 IP and has no connectivity. Everything looks as if it is configured correctly but still the DSl is working but not the Local connection.

I've attached my ASA's config. I can't bring the VPN up by pinging from the ASA but the VPN will come up when someone pings from behind the ISA server. So the problem seems to be routing/NAT on my ASA because my pings aren't being directed out the tunnel. The VPN in question has 64.106.x.x as the peer and AES 256/SHA for phase 1 and 2.

I will be moving away from my home computer but will still want access to it so I am trying to set up a VPN between it (home computer is windows 7) and my fedora 15 machine. They are currently on the same 192.168.1.0/24 network so I'm wondering if that may be the cause for my troubles.
Here's my setup:
Fedora 15 (192.168.1.3) is running the PPTP server with pptpd and gives 192.168.1.66 to any vpn client that connects to it./etc/pptpd.conf only has "localip 192.168.1.3" and "remoteip 192.168.1.66" options in it /etc/ppp/options.pptpd has "refuse-pap, refuse-chap, refuse-mschap, require-mschap-v2, require-mppe-128, proxyarp, lock, nobsdcomp, novj, novjccomp, nologfd, debug, dump" options Windows 7 (192.168.1.6, 192.168.1.66) is the client and I have it set to use connect to the public IP address of my router, PPTP, require encryption, only allow mschap-v2, don't use gateway in ipv4 properties. Both machines are connected to the same Belkin router (192.168.1.254) and I can ping locally to and from each computer no problem. The problem is my VPN connection is very inconsistent. I will open a ftp connection to 192.168.1.66 from 192.168.1.3, login, start uploading a file, get about 10MB uploaded, and then the VPN connection will die and the upload will fail. But, when I have "ping 192.168.1.66" running while uploading, the connection stays alive.

Lately I've noticed that my internet connection has been less than stellar. I will be playing an online game or surfing the web, and every so often I'll freeze up or things just won't run smoothly. My network consists of the following...All of my computers and devices connect to a Cisco 16 port gigabit switchThe switch then connects to a Peplink 20 Dual WAN routerThe router connects to a cable modem as well as a DSL modemThe other day I was trying to diagnose the problem, as well as update the firmware of the router. While I was on the main "status" page, I noticed an error saying that I couldn't connect to the router. It quickly cleared and everything was working fine. This of course made me think that my issues have to do with my connection to the router, and not with the internet service itself. I then tried ping -t to two other computers on the network, as well as the router. After 5 minutes of pinging, the connections to the two computers had zero fails, while the router connection failed about 5% of the time. I ran the same check from the other computers on the network, with similar results. So, I know that the issue lies with the router (I think), but that's where my brainstorm ends.

The issue happens intermittenly and makes network not reahable.Status of the links are UP/UP - No traffic forwarded through the link (Ser 0/0/0:1 and Ser 0/0/0:2) and at the same time not able to ping the local IP Address as well - 10.5.10.1/10.7.10.1.No issue on the Ser 0/0/0:0 link - Working fine.If you replace the new router with the old one all are working fine.

Here's my basic setup:
Computer A:
IP- 192.168.0.3
Mask- 255.255.252.0
Gateway- 192.168.0.2
[Code]....
Computer A can ping Firewall 1 and Firewall 2, but not Computer B. Computer B can ping Firewall 1 and Firewall 2, but not Computer A. Firewall 1 can ping Firewall 2, Computer A, and Computer B. Firewall 2 can ping Firewall 1, Computer A, and Computer B.
Why can't the computers ping each other, but their default gateways can? I've specifically allowed ICMP any any on all the affected interfaces.

I've had some issues with my internet connection lately. Occasionally I would have connection interruptions even when I am just browsing the web with no downloads in the background or anything like that. The strange thing is that connection fails right at the vey beginning - if I constanly ping the gateway, I will see that among the continous pings of 1ms or less, every once in a while I would have several "request time out" messages. My laptop is connected directly to the router with a 6 feet cable. I replaced the cable and it still happens. What I also noticed is that if I am online in the MMORG I am playing, I can stay online for long hours, however when I start browsing the web, I would get disconnected pretty soon. So I think somehow browsing (and downloading at high speeds, which is understandable) somehow triggers these timeouts. I dont know what to make out of it.

Lost Internet connectivity at home. connected via dsl line to my isp.when i issued ipconfig /all command i noticed that default gateway IP addr was a global ip addr. (77.36.x.x) instead of the usual private address 192.168.1.1. DHCP server had IP address 58.206.x.x when i issued ping 192.168.1.1 command, i got this output: "reply from 77.36.x.x: destination host unreachable" i couldn't access my router's configuration menu by typing 192.168.1.1 in web browser's address field.it's very interesting, because i had network issues before but could access my router's config menu and ping it. but now, i cannot reach my local router but receive reply from ISP's router.
