Sharing :: Setup A Home Network For Primarily Sharing Music / Pictures And Videos?

Jun 22, 2011

I wanted to setup a home network for primarily sharing my music, pictures and videos.I have a PS3 which can stream the video/music and display the pictures from a media server to my TV.I was wondering between NAS and a desktop computer? and wanted to know which was the better or cheaper solution? (2 much 2 ask for both)

Main Issues

--Will NAS work with PS3?

--Incase of a computer, i know i will be able to use logmein or gotomypc to Download files directly to that machine even when im not home and when i do get home its ready to go. Can the same be achieved with a NAS?What else should i consider? i.e. pros and cons of both.

Home Network :: Ethernet In - Wall Updated With Setup Pictures

Mar 16, 2011

My internet (via wifi) works just fine. But here is the situation that has me baffled-I have a house that has ethernet wired ports in each room, then there is a central hub in my closet. In the hub, I have a grey ethernet cord that is labeled 'service'. This service wire connects to a board that features 12 ethernet ports, 1 of which says 'in', 1 says 'security interface' and has a little nub in it, and the other 10 are not labeled. The grey wire is in the 'in' port.So I am left with 10 ports- port 3 of 10 has a (phone cord size) cord in it, connecting into the 'line' port on my Qwest modem/router. (Qwest set this all up for me, by the way). The modem/router is obviously plugged into the wall. Now- remaining loose in the hub are 9 ethernet cords- 5 blue, 4 green. Each one of these is written on in sharpie, and has a room label on it. 'Family, living room, kitchen, etc...'. So, pretty obvious, I simply found which cord corresponds to the room I am trying to use (family GREEN is one, family BLUE is another). These 2 wires correspond to the top port, and bottom port of a switch plate that is in my family room. Now- inside the closet hub I plugged family GREEN and family BLUE into the back of the ROUTER, ports 1 and 2 (of 4 available). Now- I went back to the wall- connected ethernet wires into the wall plate and then into the ethernet devices I am trying to use (slingbox and directv dvr). Neither are working.

If I go to setup menu on dvr it says it cannot find a network, not getting an ip address. is that the slingbox red lights are both solid (which means there is a connection), and if I go back to the router ETH1 and ETH2 are lit up on the front, again implying that I have a valid connection. This isn't rocket science, but I must be doing something wrong. Are the family GREEN and family BLUE supposed to go into any of the 9 remaining ports that are open inside the closet hub? Because my thought was- let's say hypothetically I wanted to use every available wall jack in my house. There are 9 wall jacks total, but there are only 4 ports on the router. So this would not work. But, there are 9 ethernet ports open on the board in the closet. So I must need to use the ports in the closet, NOT on the router? If so, are these closet ports specific? Because (remember I have a phone like cord coming out of port 3, going into the 'line' port on my router/modem) I took this phone like cord out of port 3, plugged into port 4. and 5, and 6, 7, etc... and none of them would allow my wifi to work- the INT light goes off on the modem/router at that point. But when I plugged back into port 3 (where Qwest originally put it), INT lit back up and wifi worked again. So this makes me think that these 10 (9 remaining) ports are specific somehow? I know this was a lot to read. End result I am looking for- continue to use my wifi on the computer (the ONE place in my house there is no wall jack lol), and connect my slingbox and my directv dvr to the wall jack in my family room so I can (have slingbox) and get On-Demand content for directv.

Setup Home Network To Run A DLNA Server For Videos / Music?

Dec 23, 2011

I want to setup my home network to run a DLNA server for videos, music, etc. I know that there are many new routers and NAS devices out there that now have the capability to run a DLNA server built-in. My question is, which would provide a better DLNA server: one that is built into the router or one that is built into the NAS device?

Connecting CCTV To A Network (home Group)?

Jul 16, 2012

Unlike most DVR's, this particular model has a 4-Channel RJ-45 input (others normally have analog BNC video inputs) this is achieved since the cameras come with video baluns which make use of ethernet (RJ-45) wire.can I have such a set-up without using a DVR, instead I would channel 4 cameras to a wireless router with 4 RJ-45 inputs? From there maybe I could connect it to the internet for remote viewing or to a home network for better streaming / saving video recorded into hard disk?

Home-group Enter Network Password?

Feb 17, 2012

I've been through pages and pages of Google and Bing searches, and I've found plenty who have this issue, but none who seem to get it solved. Three computers, all running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, are members of a Homegroup that functioned perfectly for more than a year until Tuesday of this week. On Tuesday, I installed Windows updates and also updated from Norton 360 v5 to v6.Computer A and B don't have password protected logins to Windows; Computer C is password protected. Until Tuesday, A and B have never been required to enter a password to access shared files and folders on C. Computer A still communicates fine in both directions with B and C, without having to enter C's Windows login credentials. B can be accessed by C, but when B attempts to access the C libraries that are shared by C to the Homegroup, the appropriate shared folders are shown (Documents, Pictures, etc.), but instead of their usual icons, the icons look like this: url... and if I try to click on them, I am prompted for a Network Password like this: url... The name following "Enter your network password to connect to:" is the name of C, and the "Domain" shown below the password block is the name of B. (Domains aren't even possible with Home Premium, are they?)

If I enter C's username and password I can access C from B, but upon rebooting B it starts all over again, even if I click "Remember my credentials." Sometimes I don't get the prompt and instead am told that I don't have permission to view

Preventing File Sharing On A Home Group?

Oct 8, 2012

Home Group on Windows 7. I have added a room mate to my home group (just two of us in group). I don't want either of us to be able to view or share files, folders, etc. I think I've done everything on my end: turned off Network Discovery; turned off file and printer sharing; turned off Public Folder sharing. Also turned off automatic file/printer sharing in Norton firewall.

1) do I need to do anything else, and;

2) what does room mate have to do on his computer (if anything)?

I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out on my own but somehow I don't feel quite sure that all my files/folders are not viewable by anyone else.

Computers Randomly Dropping Home-group Connection

Mar 26, 2012

I am working on a business network that was setup by another tech. Basically the connection comes from the modem to a 16 port switch (13 being used), and is going to each computer.. I'm thinking of tossing a router between the modem and switch to see if this works. Basically what it is doing is each computer accesses a database on the server, and occasionally they are losing connection to the database.. I did change all of the stations to static IP as they were all dynamic.

Home Network :: Setting Up A Wireless User Group In Town

Aug 29, 2011

We want to set up a wireless user group in our town between a few friends and new people who are interested to join. As far as I heard I don't need a ICASA License for the 5.8GHz Frequency if we are using it for a non profit orginization, so we may use that.

1 x Routerboard
3 x Radio Plugin Boards
3 x 120degree Antennas

to set up a 360degree HS (Highsite). Then at each person's house we will need:

1 x Routerboard
1 x Radio Plugin Board
1 x Whichever Antenna

Is that correct? Then also if we wanto run VoIP on our network, how do I do that? Basicly we want to use it for gaming, file sharing and VoIP. No Internet of anything else.

Home Network ::how To Share The Wifi

Dec 3, 2011

Neighbor agreed to let me use his WiFi connection only if it requires no changes or disruptions on his side. His signal is broadcast with a wireless router. I can currently see his signal broadcast on my laptop, but it's very weak.I have a omnidirectional antennae already mounted outside my house with a clear sight of view. It has a cable attached to it that terminates with a N connector inside my building.I need to connect to his signal (there are several being broadcast in the area) and then forward it to my router. My router will then provide connectivity to my home network. What hardware do I need between the outdoor omnidirectional antennae (that terminates with a N connector) and the wireless router inside my building?

Home Network Share Not Accessible But Other One Is

Mar 26, 2011

I have a fairly simple wireless home network. My main desktop machine is running XP Pro, and our family laptop is running XP Home. The laptop shares the My Documents folder for 2 of the 3 profiles. One of them works as it should. It is visible and accessible on the main desktop machine, but the other share is visible but NOT accessible. I get the following error message when I try to explore it from the main desktop machine:

<the share name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied.

I'm not sure when this started, but remember that the other folder being shared is working just fine. I've double and triple checked the settings, share names, and basically anything I could possibly mistype. I've restarted both PCs, and refreshed the network explorer via both the file explorer and My Computer dialog. The My Computer dialog refresh the shares for some reason that the explorer wouldn't, but I'm still denied access to that one share on the laptop.

Home Network :: How Best To Share A CAT5 Connection

Dec 30, 2011

I have a Linksys/Cisco wireless router. For the purposes of a high def throughput, I have a wired connection from the router to a Windows Media Center appliance in a separate room. However, now I have a second media appliance (Roku device) that I want to run in a wired fashion as well. Here is the thing, I don't want to run a second Ethernet line from the router to new roku device. Is there some way I can share the existing ethernet line between the roku device and the media center appliance? Ideally, since the two devices would never be used at the same time, I was hoping some other network device (another router?) could be hooked up to split the line between the devices. Worst case, is there some simple splitter I can use? Obviously I am trying to avoid the worst case scenario: switching the ethernet connection manually between the two devices every time I want to go from one to the other.

Home Network :: WRT160v3 - Cannot Share Internet Using PPPoE

Mar 1, 2011

I have been using DD-WRT firmware on my Linksys WRT160v3 for more than a year. I never used a PPPoE internet connection on my router. So, I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong which causes me "NO INTERNET CONNECTION". It seems to me that the router itself can connect to the internet. But, I cannot get any internet on my pc or wirless device (neither on LAN or WiFi). I tried sharing the internet through my laptop using connectify-me. And, I was able to share my internet to my mobile devices (WiFi) without any problem.

Do I need to put DNS or change any setting?

D-Link DIR-655 :: Setting Up AppleTV Or ITunes Home Share

Mar 2, 2011

If you can't home share on iTunes between Computers or AppleTV, try turning multicast on

1) login to router
2) Go to Advanced tab
3) Select Advanced Networking on Left hand column
4) Select checkbox to enable multicast streams
5) Save the changes

In order to get all my machines working, I also had to enable multicast streams on my network extender as well.  The IP address for the network extender is 192.168.0.50 or type in DLINKAP in the URL bar and follow the relevant instructions for your model number.

Please note if you use a software firewall on your PC or Mac, you may need to also free up TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353.  However there are plenty of support articles at Apple / Norton / Microsoft / etc... on how to do this for your relevant firewall..

Home Network :: Get Windows 7 Laptop To File Share With XP Desktops?

Sep 26, 2011

I've recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 and would like to be able to connect to my existing home network which comprises 2 desktop PCs connected via a Dlink wireless N router which is acting as a WAP to my Billion non-wireless router (which the two desktop PCs are connected). ie the two desktops are connected via wire to the Billion. The DLink is just there to provide wireless for my laptop (and Ipod)

The first day I setup the new laptop it seemed to recognise the C drive and G drive on my desktop (which I had set to 'share'). i was able to do file transfers.

However, the next day, and since then, the C and G drives don't show up on when I click 'network' on my Laptop's Win Explorer... They did reappear once after I refreshed the Win Explorer several times, but that trick didn't work again

Internet is working fine on all computers. Just would like to be able to share files across the 3 machines...

I've experimented on the laptop with setting as 'public', 'home' and 'work' but didn't have any luck.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E900 - Share Internet Connection With Rest Of Home Network

Mar 10, 2013

I am currently connecting my PC to a mobile phone as a Wireless Access Point to give that PC access the internet. I also have a small home network, with one other PC and a Game Console. I own a Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router. My problem is this. How do I share that internet connection with the rest of the home network? To the best of my knowledge its not possible to connect my mobile phone directly to my Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router.

So my alternative idea is to connect to the internet via one PC, set up that internet connection as "Shared." and then allow the other devices on the home network to connect thru this. My question is how do I set up my  Linksys E900 Wireless-N300 Router to allow my other PC and game console connect to the internet? Bridge Mode? PPPoE?
